Review of O'Day 26

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

CentreBoard

The O'Day 26 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.76 - 0.86 meter (2.49 - 2.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for O'Day 26 is about 99 kg/cm, alternatively 558 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 99 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 558 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Soliciting 26ft O'Day Opinion

James Brown

Hi, I'm considering an 1985 26ft O'Day. Any words of wisdom or caution. There doesn't appear to be much info available about this boat, nor many boats for sale, all which leaves me with a feeling of buyer's remorse before I have even bought it. Thanks.

Jim MacTaggart

Love my O-26 Hi Jim, I own a 1984 O'Day 26. I just bought it in February. It is a great roomy, comfortable, easy handling boat. I don't think you would be sorry for buying one. I recommend having it surveyed. As with any boat, you can always be taken if you don't knkow what you are looking for. Pay close attention to the chainplates and tabernacle as a possible leak area. I did have mine sealed prior to this year's use. I got one with an excellent bottom on it. (No blistering) Other than some minor maintenance items, everything is in great shape for its age. After a good compounding and waxing, it looks like new. If you check the unoffical O'Day web page http://home.att.net/~oday you will find not many were made so not many will be on the market. Also, check out www.boattalk.com and you will find how other owners rated their boats. I checked this out before buying and felt very comfortable in my purchase. Hope you get it and enjoy sailing it. Ben Allen - O'Day 26

Execllent Purchase James, The O'Day 26 is an execllent boat. It was only produced for three years and only about 85 were made. Looking at the production run numbers, I can only assume that the 26 was dropped to concentrate on the 280. As was mentioned before, check the chainplate area, also check the turnbuckles. Being the size that they are, they are easy to bend if they get out of line when stepping the mast. One other area that I have found on my boat that will be changed soon is the the ice box draines into the bilge, not overboard. I plan on connecting it to the galley sink drain this fall. The 26 is quick and responsive to the tiller, feels very solid with the stub keel. If the boat that you are looking at get a clean survey, you will be very pleased with it. Ben Allen Montgomery, AL "Wahoo" 1985 O'Day 26

Justin - O'day Owner's Web

I've never heard a bad resonse for an o'day James, I haven't sailed an O26, but I have never heard of someone not liking the O'day line unless they were hard core racers in the J-boat vein. I would also encourage that survey, however. Once you determine a class of boat for your purchase, the condition of the one you pick is paramount, but difficult to determine for the untrained eye. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

o'day 26 If you are looking for a boat that is both fast and handles nice. then the 26 is for you. I've owned mine (1985) for 7 years with no regrets.. Personally I have looked at bigger boats but always come up with the end decision that I do not want to sell mine...

Love my O'Day 26 I trade my O'Day 25 for an '84 O'Day26 this year and really have enjoyed it tremendously. The boat sails to weather very well and will do 5 1/2 - 6 knots with about a 15 knot wind - even with the smallish genoa that mine is fitted with. I alsohave a Yanmar diesel inboard which is a huge improvement over the 25's OB. I've had no problems yet aside from some cracked fiberglass where the tiller fitting is secured to the rudder-it seems the original design of this element could stand some beefing up. Other than that I am very satisfied with my purchase - it seems a lot of boat for the money. Regards, Greg Jones

Good choice I have had a 1985 26ft for 6 years and it is a fun boat. I keep it on a trailer in the winter and the shallow draft is a nice feature. As others have mentioned, I had a leak around the chainplates and the plywood bulkhead deteriorated so I had to extend the chainplate attachment to find good wood. No other problems. I have the Yanmar diesel and it is a sweet treat. I moved up from a 22 Catalina. Enjoy, Herb <[email protected]>
