Unleash Your Inner Sailor on a Windjammer Adventure in Maine!

Sail aboard the newest and largest vessel in the fleet!

Welcome Aboard!

Join us aboard the Heritage this season for an unforgettable Maine windjammer cruise. Every trip is special. Capts. Sean and Ben are your hosts aboard every trip. In addition to sailing the vessel, they enjoy entertaining their guests by playing live music in the evenings. The food is delicious with restaurant quality dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Daily breads, cookies, and desserts are all freshly baked aboard.

Each trip we enjoy an all-you-can-eat lobster cookout on a pristine island beach. Hear about the islands, vessels and people of Mid-Coast Maine as well as the many lighthouses we see. Wildlife abounds with birds both ashore and at sea as well as marine mammals. Best of all you can enjoy sailing aboard a schooner built with your comfort in mind.

Heritage Sailing

Enjoyed the trip of a lifetime with my daughter (age 29)! The Captains and crew were kind and engaging and the food was incredible! The main coast is full of beautiful little islands and sailing felt like such an adventure! The captains entertained us one evening and surprised us with their notable talents!

Romantic getaways in Maine Schooner Heritage

We have a trip for everyone aboard the Schooner Heritage. Whether you want to sail with the fleet, explore in search of lighthouses, tour Acadia, bond with family, gaze at shooting stars, or just relax and sail the Maine coast with no itinerary. We can always promise stunning views, delicious food, and an unforgettable experience. Summers in Maine are a time for growth and rejuvenation. The season is short so as Mainers we celebrate and make the most of it. Join us in this celebration as we explore hidden places not accessible to most and with 3,478 miles of tidal coastline, see Maine the way it was meant to be seen.

Coasting schooners, like the Heritage, were designed for accessing shallow passages and ports allowing us to travel to more secluded places where comparable sized vessels can’t access. This makes Heritage the perfect choice when choosing a windjammer to sail on.

Live music night in the Heritage galley

Enjoy an evening beverage and sing along with Captains Sean and Ben during lively music nights.  Whether up on deck, or down in the galley, music nights aboard the Schooner Heritage are the best on the bay!

Performing different genres of music, and the songs you know and love, as well as songs you may have never heard before that will surely be added to your playlist after you get home.

We look forward to you joining us!

Relax  & Unwind

You'll feel like you've stepped into another time and place aboard Heritage. Each day is filled with a little adventure and plenty of relaxation. We leave Rockland headed for parts unknown; wherever the wind, weather, and tides take us. The coast of Maine is spotted with over 3,000 islands topped with lush evergreen forests and lined with rugged granite shores. Row ashore and stretch your legs in local fishing villages and towns rich with art and culture. In the evenings we will anchor in hidden coves where you’ll enjoy coastal wildlife, spectacular sunsets, and endless stars.

After a few years of engaging work in farms and restaurants across Maine and New Orleans, she found herself back in Penobscot Bay as galley hand on a Windjammer and fell in love with the maritime industry. With some valuable crewing time under her belt, she moved to a permanent shoreside position with the historic Windjammer, Victory Chimes and quickly gained responsibility. Today, she is thrilled to be a co-owner and manager of the Grace Bailey.

Considering sailing on a Maine windjammer cruise? There is absolutely no better way to experience the coast of Maine .

In this guide, we’re going to tell you all about what to expect on this fabulous Maine sailing trip.

The best Maine windjammer cruises involve sailing on a traditional schooner out of Rockland, Maine. My first trip was with a friend, Nicki. I had little idea what to expect; I only knew I was anxious to spend a few days “at sea” on a totally different kind of journey.

When Nicki offered to bring me with her on a “Lobsters and Lighthouses” cruise, I agreed immediately. Would I like to go sailing on an authentic schooner off the coast of Maine? Absolutely.

And in 2019, I went sailing again, this time with my best first mate, Nathan!

Table of Contents

All about the Best Maine Windjammer Cruise: The Schooner J&E Riggin

We sailed on the J&E Riggin , a 3-masted schooner built in 1927. The excitement begins even as you board the boat, because it’s unlike anything you’ve traveled on before.

You immediately get a sense of luxury-meets-antique; while the boat is nearly a century old and boasts many original features, it’s sparkling and modernized in all the right ways. The decks, especially where passengers gather, are made of a gleaming, vibrant wood.

The boat itself is dressed in red and blue—a truly classic Maine sailing vessel. And there are plenty of comforts of home, including insanely delicious meals.

On the first night, we stowed our luggage in our cabins below decks and met the captain and crew. We were briefed on our daily schedule and learned what our week aboard the Riggin would look like. We also learned a few essentials, including how to flush the toilets (very important!)

That initial evening, I felt a little nervous. I didn’t know how I would feel during the trip. I’d never spent that many days on a boat. Would I be seasick? What if I didn’t like the other passengers? Would my cabin feel claustrophobic?

I’ll admit, the unknown can be daunting, and I’m a person who gets a little anxious. As it turns out, my fears were unfounded and my nerves quickly calmed.

A historic lantern sits on wood surrounded by other small artifacts, like journals and phones.

By trip’s end, I could say without a doubt that the experience was fabulous, and above all, it was something really special and memorable.

But I can also surmise that all cruises offered are likely vastly different. No two journeys are the same, and that’s part of what makes this so amazing. So, while your experience will doubtless be its own magical time, if you’re thinking of going on a sailing cruise in Maine, I’d love to tell you just a bit of what you can expect on this adventure.

Maine is Gorgeous

First of all, if you’re going on a schooner cruise in Maine, you probably already know that the Maine coast has some of the most spectacular scenery. With that, you will not be disappointed.

The Penobscot Bay, where the J&E Riggin sails, is breathtaking. During the trip we were constantly passing islands of all sizes and descriptions. Rocky coasts, pine-covered hills, and even treeless islands where the seabirds gather.

Our cruise took us past a half dozen or more lighthouses, which is definitely a highlight of traveling in Maine.

White and black lighthouse sits on the coast in the distance; the foreground features a serene body of water under a grey sky.

As you sail on your Maine schooner, you’ll spend a lot of time gazing out at the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Luckily, it’s incredibly beautiful. The meeting of the sea and sky, interrupted only by the gentle waves and the occasional porpoise or seal surfacing, is a hypnotic and peaceful sight.

Large body of water under a blue sky with a white boat floating on it in the distance.

You’ll Get Used to Everything Very Quickly

I have mentioned that I was slightly nervous my first night aboard the boat. My primary misgiving was the cabin. They are admittedly….a bit snug. I was sharing with Nicki and I took the top bunk. Our beds were wedged into the wall, and though we had plenty of storage space for our things, my initial reaction was that I was not looking forward to sleeping there.

But my worries quickly evaporated. It’s amazing how quickly a person can adjust to a new environment and a new routine. The cabins were ultimately extremely cozy.  With a comfortable bed, a warm light to keep you company while you read under the covers, and the sound of the sea outside your window, you sleep like a baby.

And you don’t spend much time in your cabin anyway. Nearly all your time awake is spent up on deck relaxing, chatting, dining, and sailing.

Aside from the accommodations, there are a few other unique features of schooner life to adapt to. But again, you adjust so quickly. The bathrooms on the ship are known as “heads” and they require a system of pumping to flush them. This must be done every time you use the head.

Don’t worry. It soon becomes second nature. (Now that I’m home, I find a self-flushing toilet to be a thing of WONDER).

A vase of flowers on a table in the foreground. The distance shows a person peering out to the water.

You’ll also have to share a single shower with all other passengers aboard. But again, this is no problem. When you want to rinse off, the crew can turn on the hot water and you can enjoy a pleasant shower in one of the heads. Most passengers are happy to shower just once while onboard (which is what I did).

The remainder of the time, let the sea be your natural cleanser! Hop in for a refreshing swim in the saltwater. You can also pack some essentials like dry shampoo and baby wipes—more on that later.

You Can Sail a Boat

While I still think sailing seems incredibly complicated, this Maine sailing trip taught me that—if you work as a team—anyone can help sail a vessel!

A wooden boat in a body of water.

Each day, when the crew of the Riggin raised the sails or heaved the anchor, they asked for volunteers. I never volunteered for the anchor raising…grown men seemed to quiver in their boots after that arduous task. But I did help out with raising the mainsail a few times.

Together, we all stood on the port and starboard sides of the deck and pulled the ropes hand-over-hand to lift those incredible, huge sails. It was rewarding work and it really makes you appreciate just how many “hands on deck” are necessary to help keep a boat afloat.

A person in a boat on a body of water.

Each Day is an Adventure

Because sailing relies so much on the wind, each day dawns with a somewhat unexpected itinerary. Though Captain Jon has a plan in mind, the Riggin often ends up “where the wind takes it.”

This is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the windjammer cruise. Every day will include some sailing as you make your way to your next stop.

Nearly every day gives you a chance to walk ashore, too. On our cruise, we stopped at Warren Island State Park, where we had our traditional lobster bake, as well as the town of Castine, which we were able to explore for a few hours.

You can expect to see a lot of the Maine coast and the Penobscot Bay on a schooner trip on the J&E Riggin. Wake up each day ready and hoping for an adventure and I’m pretty sure you’ll get your wish.

A sunset over a body of water.

The weather can be unexpected, too. But even rainy days can turn into beautiful nights, and in any situation, the crew works hard to keep you comfortable. Honestly, having a bit of a storm at sea can be kind of fun.

Wildlife is Everywhere, Keep Your Eye Out for It

Maine is a great place to spot some of God’s most amazing creatures (moose, to name just one), and the coast is no different. We saw porpoises, eagles, osprey, and my personal favorite, seals.

Blue lake by the rocky shore with trees.

Wildlife can appear at any time, and it’s usually when you least expect it. I found that just looking out at the water was the best method. Seals and porpoises are constantly popping up, sometimes fairly close to the boat. If you stay patient and keep your eyes open, you’ll almost certainly be rewarded with some Maine wildlife sightings.

You Will Be Eating Like a King (or Queen)

Before departing on our Maine windjammer cruise, we heard multiple times how fantastic the food was going to be. Those were words of truth! My goodness, we ate like royalty on the J&E Riggin. Every breakfast, lunch, and dinner was out of this world.

Foot sitting on a wooden table, featuring bread, potatoes, and salad. Boats floating on the water can be seen in the distance.

We had pastries for breakfast, homemade pancakes with a choice of three flavorful syrups (Maine blueberry available of course) and a hearty vanilla oatmeal one morning. There was fresh coffee every day. Home baked bread. Dinners ranged from Asian inspired rice bowls to hearty beef rubbed with herbs de Provence. Incredible deserts every evening, including peach cobbler, creme brulee, and a chocolate tart.

Aerial view of desserts in a bowl on a wooden table.

One of the highlights is the traditional lobster bake. The whole group heads ashore to cook up some fresh-as-can-be Maine lobster. The result is both delicious and visually beautiful! Along with corn on the cob, paella, fresh fruit, and s’mores for dessert, it’s the perfect summer meal.

Person shucking corn on a wooden table.

The cruise is BYOB, so bring along your favorite beverages to enjoy while onboard. There are lots of great Maine beers, ciders, and wines you could choose from if you want something local.

Your Shipmates Become a Bit Like Family

I think one of the most special things about a schooner cruise is the people you meet. There were passengers from all over the US, and it was a joy to chat with each of them.

I also really enjoyed interacting with the crew, and most of all with Captains Jon & Annie. These two are the owners of the vessel and the creators of the wonderful schooner experience aboard the Riggin. Jon is the ship’s captain while his wife Annie prepares the gourmet meals down in the galley. They are both aided by a crew of young, energetic people who were such fun and kind souls.

A group of people in a boat on a body of water

The J&E Riggin truly is a family affair. On the last night, Annie, Jon, and their daughter Ella, who was a crew member, entertained us with music and singing.

As we swayed in the falling darkness, the light of the lanterns gently illuminating our faces, we listened to the clear sounds of their voices bringing us traditional seafaring tunes. It was beautiful and sort of haunting, but I could see that every passenger relished the moment.

I can honestly say that this is one talented family, between sailing, building, cooking, music, writing, and even art.  It’s really special to get to know Annie, Jon, and the rest during those few days aboard the schooner. You can’t help but bond with one another through the experience.

A group of people on a boat with water in the distance.

Maine Windjammer Cruise Packing List

If you’re sailing in Maine, there are a few things you’ll want to be sure to bring. Summer in Maine can be warm, but out on the boat, the temperatures are often 20 degrees colder than onshore. Combine that with brisk winds and nighttime temps and you’re basically going to 100% need a jacket!

We went out on some super hot days and I still had to don my sweatshirt several times. I highly recommend bringing items of varying thickness so that you can layer (and un-layer) as need be. Aside from that, pack for practicality and comfort. Here’s what I suggest you pack:

  • Functional clothes you can layer
  • Dramamine or other anti-seasickness medication
  • Cleansing wipes
  • Dry shampoo ( this one’s my fave)
  • Hair elastics
  • Binoculars (so you can spot all the wildlife)
  • Sweater or sweatshirt ( this one is appropriate)
  • Waterproof jacket or windbreaker ( this jacket is currently the #1 bestseller for men)
  • Comfortable shorts/pants
  • Sandals with backs or boat shoes
  • Personal flashlight
  • Portable charger (you probably won’t use a phone much on the trip, but if you’re taking a lot of photos, bring a battery backup . This will come in handy on other trips, too). A solar one is a great idea!
  • A book to read
  • Small container for jewelry

It’s also wise to bring sunscreen and other toiletry items, but the boat also has plenty of these on board, so if you forget about an item, don’t worry.

WINDJAMMER CRUISES

4-day explorer.

September 10-14 & 17-21: Immerse yourself in the rhythm of shipboard life. Relax, read a book, engage in the lost art of conversation with your new shipmates, or hop in and help with the working of the ship. Like our 5-Day Explorer, these cruises give you a lightly structured opportunity to unplug and tune into the shipboard world around you, but with less of a time commitment.

2-Day Explorer

The schooner.

Manitou is one of the largest sailing ships on the Great Lakes, constructed with modern materials but similar in design to vessels that sailed one hundred years ago. She was built specifically for passenger service, making her one of the most comfortable Windjammers afloat.

sailboat cruise windjammer

Our licensed captain has many years of experience, and with the professional crew, you can rest assured you’re in good hands. Manitou meets or exceeds all U.S. Coast Guard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment and electronics for vessels in passenger service. If the wind should fail, the sturdy diesel engine powers her swiftly to the next destination. Because of her size and design, she ensures a comfortable relaxing sail for all. Manitou is two-masted, gaff rigged, topsail schooner, 114 feet in length with over 3,000 square feet of sail, and displaces (weighs) over one hundred tons. Up to twenty-four passengers can enjoy the pleasure and thrill of sailing aboard Manitou .

DESTINATIONS

Located at the base of beautiful West Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City, MI is the vibrant homeport for Manitou . Traverse City’s unique shops and galleries, as well as its many high-quality restaurants, are sure to enhance your sailing adventure.

Remove yourself from the trappings of modern life while aboard Manitou : no TV, phone (cell phones are discouraged), or email, and definitely no itinerary. The wind and weather conditions help determine our course, and after a good day of sailing we drop anchor at one of a variety of possible destinations. We may take in a little local color at a historic fishing village such as St. James on Beaver Island, or visit one of Michigan ‘s oldest general stores (est. 1839) while at Old Mission Harbor. The storekeeper will recount its fascinating history while serving up a genuine fountain soda or ice cream. Enjoy a little wine tasting in Omena Bay, or hunt for an ancient Petoskey Stone while beachcombing in Cathead Bay. A wealth of islands, bays, anchorages and coastal villages are within our reach.

ABOARD SHIP

Life aboard the Manitou is fun and informal. The object here is to slow down and take things as they come. Discover the lost art of conversation with newfound friends, read a good book, marvel at the breathtaking array of stars, get back in touch with yourself. Many folks have told us that this is the best stress reliever they have ever found. While underway, you are free to leave the sailing to our experienced crew or lend a hand and learn the arts of the sailor. After Manitou tucks into a snug anchorage for the evening, take out our sea kayaks or rowing dinghy for a little exploration. Beachcombing is special fun for those who would like to further enjoy the beauty of many of our destinations.

sailboat cruise windjammer

You’ll love the food on Manitou . Our healthy menus will satisfy the heartiest of seagoing appetites, with emphasis on Manitou specialties, fresh fruits, and produce of the region. Our galley staff will delight you with bountiful home cooked meals turned out of the ship’s galley. All of the cooking is done on our wood-fired stove, and is served either family style in the main cabin or as a wonderful buffet on deck. Beverages such as juice, tea, and coffee are provided during meals. Soft drinks may be brought on board and stored in your cabin or in ice chests provided on deck.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Manitou accommodates twenty-four passengers in twelve double cabins. Each is nicely appointed but simple and rustic with two sturdy built-in bunks and electric lighting. They are clean, cozy, comfortable, and supplied with fresh linens, towels and warm blankets. All of the cabins and entries have plenty of headroom and windows which can be opened for ventilation. Passengers look after their own cabins and keep them “shipshape.” Skylights and seating areas around the ship’s various cabin sections add to the overall comfort for conversation or an intimate encounter with a good book. The ship’s marine heads (toilets) and hot showers are conveniently located on deck.

WHAT TO BRING

Pack comfortable, casual clothes in soft luggage instead of suitcases for easy stowing. Bring layers of clothing so you can be prepared for cool and cold nights as well as warm or hot sunny days. Rubber-soled shoes, bathing suits, sunglasses, rain gear, cameras, and musical instruments are items to be remembered. For those who might like to sleep on deck during nights with bright stars and the Northern Lights, a sleeping bag and cushioned pad should be packed as well. For the comfort of all on board:

  • Bring headphones for everyone’s comfort
  • Smoking is permitted on deck only
  • Excessive drinking is prohibited
  • Minimum passenger age is 12

sailboat cruise windjammer

Cancellation Policy

Passengers may cancel their trip up until 30 days before the boarding day and still receive a refund of their deposit, minus a $25 per person processing fee. Cancellations within 30 days of departure are non-refundable.

Windjammer trips may be canceled by Traverse Tall Ship Company if the minimum number of bookings is not met. We will evaluate this 30 days before boarding day, and if the minimum number of bookings is not met, the windjammer will be cancelled, passengers will be notified, and refunds will be issued.

Utah Man’s Cruise Ship, Bought on Craigslist, Now Sinking After He Spent Over $1 Million Restoring It

The 'Aurora' began to "sink in 13 feet of water and discharge pollution," the U.S. Coast Guard announced in May

United States Coast Guard

A man from Utah spent over $1 million restoring a cruise ship he bought on Craiglist that has begun sinking.

Technology entrepreneur Chris Willson revealed in an interview with  CNN Travel that he and his long-term partner, Jin Li, spent 15 years restoring the Aurora — a 293-foot vessel — after purchasing it online in 2008. The ship also features 85 cabins, a swimming pool and a theater.

While Willson didn't disclose the original cost of the vessel, he said in the interview published on Wednesday, Sept. 18, that he was able to "work out a really good deal with the owner."

Willson recalled immediately falling in love with Aurora after discovering a few facts about it. The boat was originally named the Wappen von Hamburg,  built by Germany after World War II, inspired  The Love Boat and was featured in the 1963 film  From Russia with Love.

CDFW Spill Prevention/Response

He told CNN Travel that Aurora spent a year docked at Rio Vista, Calif., around three years at San Francisco’s Pier 38, and was docked at Herman & Helen’s Marina, around 24 kilometers from Stockton, Calif., in 2012.

"I’d gotten quite a ways. I think we had 10 areas solidly restored and refurnished meticulously," he said about his work on the vessel. He ended up selling the boat in October 2023 after locals took issue with the dormant ship, reports CNN Travel.

"These were kind of major areas. So we were pretty proud of that. So we were doing a pretty good job. We had marine engineers involved," continued Willson. "(There was) no lack of people coming out to loan a hand."

While the identity of the individual who brought the Aurora has not been publicly shared, the U.S. Coast Guard announced on Wednesday, May 22 , that it had begun to "sink in 13 feet of water and discharge pollution."

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

"It has been determined the ship has suffered a hole and is taking on water and is currently leaking diesel fuel and oil into the Delta Waterway," added the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in a post on X .

The U.S. Coast Guard announced in late June that contractors hired by a Unified Command tried to refloat the Aurora and remove "an estimated 21,675 gallons of oily water, 3,193 gallons of hazardous waste, and five 25-yard bins of debris."

"Extensive surveys suggest that no recoverable oil remains onboard. There were no observations of oiled wildlife throughout the response," the U.S. Coast Guard's press release said, noting that the City of Stockton had "hired contractors to maintain pumps within the vessel to address potential water ingress and monitor the vessel."

The city's community relations officer, Connie Cochran, told CNN Travel that when the Aurora sank, it had "no clear ownership."

In an interview with PEOPLE, she added that the city is working with a contractor who has done a condition assessment of the vessel to determine if it is "structurally sound enough to withstand a dead ship tow to a place where it could be salvaged" since it is a "public hazard."

In a recent post on a Facebook group page chronicling the restoration of the Aurora, Willson said that the "new owner has consistently reached out to every pertinent agency, fervently proclaiming his ownership status, and has provided unequivocal legal documentation confirming his ownership."

SUNSHINY DAYS

How’s the weather.

The weather is wonderful. Year round temperatures are typically in the mid 80’s, with fresh breezes during the day, and mid 70’s at night. Occasional rain showers are typical, but then the sun shines more brightly afterwards, as if to apologize!

If you're sailing the Greek Isles, prepare for cooler temperatures in May and October. A jacket and slacks are recommended.

WILL I GET SEASICK?

If you've experienced motion sickness in the past, or aren't sure how you'll adjust, please bring your preferred remedy with you. Most motion sickness medications aren't effective if taken after you start feeling sick. Play it safe if you're not sure, and take your medication before you set sail!

Most cell phone carriers provide international roaming service on Caribbean networks. Call your provider to ensure you have coverage, and ask about cost-saving international service plans.

DO THE SHIPS HAVE WIFI?

WIFI is available on board Lyra. There are Internet cafés on some of the islands.

SIPS ON THE SHIP

Is there a bar on board.

You may help yourself to the included beverages at any time. You're welcome to bring your own spirits on board to mix your favorite drinks. Pick it up at the duty free on your way down, or at a local market before you board.

DO YOU PROVIDE MIXERS?

Depending upon availability, we provide Cola, Diet Cola, Sprite, Ginger Ale and Tonic Water.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS… AND OURS TOO

Can you play the kazoo? Have you mastered the art of strumming the guitar on your front porch swing? If you’re wildly entertaining, or mildly talented, bring your instrument along for the ride. Some guests enjoy center stage, while others just like to watch.

While we’re on the subject, bring your playlist, and take your turn at the dock. See what we did there? He-he.

DO YOU OFFER TOURS?

Greek Isles Your crew will explain the wonders of each island prior to your arrival, and may be able to assist if you wish to plan a special activity.

Windwards and Turks & Caicos These islands are small, beautiful, and far from the crowds. Island tours in some ports of call can be arranged with local taxi drivers, or your crew. The main activities are swimming, snorkeling, strolling around local villages, and....relaxing!

The British Virgins | Leewards | French West Indies These Islands are larger, more populated, and have a wide variety of activities and things to do. The Operations Manager will review things to do on your own, as well as a variety of optional extra excursions (not included in your cruise fare).

OF BEACH DAYS AND BEACH SIPS Please do not bring beverages ashore from the ship, as local vendors earn their livelihood selling drinks and renting chairs in some ports of call. When permissible, the crew will bring a beverage cooler to the beach for your enjoyment.

HOW ABOUT SNORKELING AND SCUBA? Snorkel gear is available onboard at no cost. If you are interested in scuba diving, research diving opportunities prior to sailing, and make arrangements while on board.

LOOK SUNSATIONAL The sun can be your best friend and give you a big dose of vitamin D — or your worst enemy. We strongly suggest using a high SPF sunscreen, and applying it often. We want you to look like you’ve been frolicking in paradise, not bathing in a cauldron of hot water. While we’re on the subject of encouraging… avoid insect bites by using insect repellent anytime you are outside. Apply after sunscreen.

THE ESSENTIALS

Island style.

Dress on board is casual. Ladies and gents planning to dine ashore may want to pack a sundress or a pair of trousers. Bath towels are provided, as are hair dryers, shampoo, and body wash.

Cabins have A/C and 110V electric outlets. There are 220V electric outlets aboard Lyra. CPAP machines are okay to bring if you require one. Pack light. Cabin storage space is limited. Did we say pack light? Why yes, yes we did.
