We decided to host a "sprinkle" to celebrate our second baby. Given that we were having a different gender, we wanted our closest family and friends to share in celebrating our news. We chose Corinthian Yacht Club based on a few factors, such as being close to our home, but also for the fact that there was an outdoor tent that overlooked the water. Our brunch party of approximately 40 people was held outside on the chilliest day so far (60 degrees) this fall and they closed up the tent so we could still see the water but it was much warmer. They also allowed one of our relatives who uses a wheelchair to drive right up to the side of the tent and enter without a second thought. I cannot say enough good things about Greg and the staff at CYC. From my first call, Greg explained everything and quickly invited us over to tour the facility in preparation for a shower. He was super friendly and accommodating and worked with us. Everything was set up with ease. He contacted us the week of to confirm our headcount and everything went off without a hitch! On the day of, the entire staff was so friendly and accommodating, checking in with our guests, moving things along (without rushing anyone) and truly going above and beyond our expectations. The food was really tasty (we chose a true brunch and there was wayyy more food than I'd imagined). Everything was set up as described. T I would wholeheartedly recommend CYC for any event. They are really caring and friendly people and we enjoyed our experience so much! Thank you to Greg and the entire staff!!! We wouldn't hesitate to book another event :)
I was at a friend's wedding recently and was highly surprised at the food quality. Overall it was definitely a notch above what you get in other banquet halls in this part of Delco. Combine it with the antique feel of the inside, and a good river view, and you have a worthy choice for your function.
This is a nice club on the river. It's primarily geared to the sailing crowd (duh) but I am not a member and have only gone for events with other groups as a guest of the club. I've eaten dinner here at least 6 times, almost every time we've had lobster and steak, and it has always been very good. The bar is a great place to hang out with a view of the water and interesting yet understated nautical theme. The club also sports a single trap station and they do a nice job hosting a trap event. I've always found it amusing to shoot trap over the water as commercial airlines are coming up the river on approach to PHL. One obviously can't actually hit them with a shotgun round, they are not that close, but it just seems odd to point a shotgun at a US Airways 757, although for other reasons I've considered it.
My friends had their wedding reception here. The view of the Delaware River is amazing, it's almost breathtaking. The service and food was great. The only negative as a reception site is that the table area is long and narrow. So when people were making speeches at one end, the tables all the way at the other end couldn't see or hear and therefore people were talking over the bridal party. The docks will make for some amazing photos though, and at least they have those for years. The food was ok, they started off with a spinach salad that people seemed to either like or not. For dinner I got their salmon dish and thought it was good. My boyfriend got a steak and he said it was good but it was cold. Since it was a wedding and they were bringing out food as it was ready it seemed a little weird that he would get cold meat. My two vegetarian friends didn't really seem to enjoy their stuffed pepper. But for a venue, it was really nice and the staff was friendly.
My daughter fell in love with the Corinthian Yacht Club because of the incredible river view, the sunset and evening skyline and the classic club feel inside this beautiful building. The perfect backdrop to her wedding day. But she got so much more than that! The incredible food - everyone enjoyed the wonderful selections for both the rehearsal dinner and the reception. Phil and Danielle made sure the rehearsal dinner wasn't anything like the reception with a fun menu that helped everyone relax and mingle. The incredible service - Danielle went above and beyond making sure every detail (and there were so many little details) was exactly as the bride wanted while keeping the nervous mother of the bride calm. She did not miss a beat. She was hands on from beginning to end working side by side with her staff the entire night. And the staff - especially Donna - worked tirelessly. They could not have been more efficient, friendly or professional. My daughter had the wedding of her dreams thanks to everyone at the Corinthian. If you want a unique wedding, this is the place!
Two weeks before my wedding, I found out that Greg, the venue's built in coordinator, had quit. I thought the wedding was doomed! Danielle to the rescue!! Danielle is Greg's replacement, and although not as laid back as Greg, she was 1000% as competent. She was completely on top of things, down to the smallest detail that I thought only the bride would notice or care about. Danielle cared just as much as I did which was wonderful! I felt so reassured having somebody listen and take notes so that she could be sure the event would carry out as I envisioned. The night couldn't have been more beautiful. I posted a pic but it does zero justice. The venue is a hidden gem, and unlike SO many other venues in this area, you don't have to pre-select a cookie cutter wedding. In fact that's why I chose Corinthian! The wedding is all your own, you choose your vendors, you choose how and where and in what order things are done, the menu is completely flexible, etc. Plus open bar. Huge plus. I can't recommend this place highly enough and am so fortunate that I happened upon it!!
On the dock at CYCOP.
My mom surprised me with a baby shower here, this afternoon! With a nautical theme for the baby's nursery, this was by far the most perfect location for my nautical themed shower - as we entered, family and friends yelled "ahoy, it's a boy!" Being completely and totally overwhelmed by the events of the day, I honestly only picked at my food. However, they served a wedge salad for course 1 and beef, chicken and crab cakes for the main. I had the beef, which was tasty (nothing to necessarily write home about), my husband had the chicken (cleared his plate), but the clear winner of the day was the jumbo lump crab cake (everyone who had it, even the pickiest of eaters, raved and raved about them). The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating throughout the event and treated all of our guests with kindness. They were also extremely accommodating given the last minutes changes in head count, associated with a week of constant snowing and changes in RSVPs. Although, I'm a Delco native, I currently live in Philadelphia. And this place, like so many other Delco staples reminds me of the simple, kindness from Delco people and their establishments. This venue is certainly off of the beaten path, but I certainly hope to return one day ... Maybe even for a birthday party for our little boy (that is, if he isn't completely over the nautical theme - by the time he gets old enough to have a say)! Thanks CYC for a great day and a fabulous shower, despite the crazy freezing rain and snow storm!
CYC is awesome! I will be coming back! Phil and staff are great to work with! They are very accommodating. I was just at a shower, and everything was perfect! Food was fantastic!
Hi this is a hidden gem. We had our daughter's bridal shower there on 4/30/17. Awesome, beautiful setting, excellent food and the staff, super friendly and helpful. We will have more affairs there, for sure it was incredible. Our guest comments ranged from beautiful venue, excellent food, top notch, first class and the best shower every. Loved it.
We had a wedding celebration at the club this past Saturday evening. When arranged we were happy that it met our needs and likes; but at the finish, it turned into amazingly awesome! Still reeling on how grand the event turned out and the guests continue to comment about their enjoyable time. The food was fresh, delicious and artfully presented and the serving staff attentive ~ all in a beautifully unique, historic atmosphere. If you think outside the box (we had a 1930's theme and arrived by vintage car) or even if desires are more traditional, this could easily be your venue! The staff is accommodating to YOUR wishes and extremely nice to work with. Kudos to General Manager, George, and catering coordinator, Danielle!

Breaking News
In upper darby, 16-year old shot in a foot, the corinthian yacht club marks its 100th anniversary.
Founded in 1892, the sailing club’s members originally included the cream of Philadelphia society, but the CYC is now becoming a family fun spot. The ongoing changes include a membership drive and over $2 million worth of upgrades to the facilities and grounds.
Past and Present
Initially, the CYC property included what is now Governor Printz Park. CYC donated the land to Essington to create the public park. It was a fitting gesture, considering Governor Printz’ estate and the parliament building of New Sweden once stood on the clubhouse grounds.
The CYC originally owned property opposite its Second Street entrance, but sold the land to a developer to raise funds in the 1950s. The property to the south that is now the West End Yacht Club was also once CYC-owned.
The main CYC building served as a tavern and inn before it was converted to a clubhouse for yachtsmen. The club’s first commodore – a position that equates to chairman of the board – was Edward R. Coleman (an Andrew Carnegie business partner), who was elected by his peers in 1892.
The current holder of the two-year title is Commodore Jack Gregg, who has been preceded by 48 other CYC commodores, all of whom can be seen in a one-room display of their portraits.
The break from Philadelphia
The Greek word corinthian refers to person who lives in the lap of luxury. In nautical terms, a corinthian is an amateur yachtsman – a yacht owner who prefers to sail his own boat, as opposed to hiring a captain. Original CYC members represented both definitions of the word.
The CYC was founded by members of the Quaker City Yacht Club. The Philadelphia-based club was “a bit too frisky” for the refined gentlemen that would become CYC charter members, according to former commodore and Corinthian Historical Foundation President Norm Robinson.
“Traditionally, yachtsmen are heavy drinkers – history records that they like their rum,” Robinson notes.
The membership roles of the CYC once included Philadelphia’s industrial giants — familiar names such as Wanamaker, Thayer, Lippincott, du Pont, Drexel, Longstreth, Pew, and Scott.
The annual July Fourth party and fireworks display was a renowned CYC event in the early days of the exclusive club. Well-heeled members traveling from the city often arrived by rail, and routinely sipped mint juleps in the spring and summer and hot apple toddies in the fall.
History on display
Many of the historical treasures that are now on display inside the clubhouse have been donated by CYC members.
The non-profit Corinthian Historical Foundation was founded in 1982 with the mission to “collect, care for and maintain the artifacts, and make them available to the public,” according to Robinson.
Currently, tours are given by appointment only, but the goal is to set up regular hours for visitors to view over 100 pieces of maritime art. The artifacts include historic photos, nautical paintings, yacht models, a collection of chromolithographic prints, and one of the largest custom-made wooden half-model collections in existence.
Scale half-models were originally made by ship designers to market their vessels to potential buyers. The board-mounted hull prototypes emphasized innovative underwater keel designs, and featured intricate planking along the length of the vessel. The details could even include miniature cannon placements on military models.
Half-models on display at CYC vary from one foot in length to three 5-foot-long nineteenth-century US Navy gunships.
Two naval cannons (one full-size, one less than three-feet-long) mounted on deck carriages are on display, as is a ship’s clock.
A century-old painting of the Philadelphia-built frigate South Carolina – one of the original six sailing vessels that made up the fledgling American Navy – hangs above the hearth in the new pub room.
A framed CYC burgee hangs on the main dining room wall. The CYC burgee – the triangular flag that flies from atop the main mast to identify an owner’s club affiliation – features a horizontal red cross on a white background, with a 13-star ring encircling an anchor on a blue field in the upper left quadrant of the cross.
A proud tradition
CYC is home to both Drexel University and University of Pennsylvania sailing teams.
CYC members have captained and crewed sailboats in America’s Cup and other international races, including cup-winners Courageous and Freedom.
Among the many racing trophies and uniquely-shaped cups on display at CYC is the Eddystone Trophy (appropriately lighthouse-shaped) and the impressive Alexander Van Rensselaer Cup – a 16-inch silver cup topped with a wave, a mermaid, and a helmsman’s wheel – that was bestowed on its namesake to honor the former commodore.
“We are a recognized club up and down the east coast, and we’ve had members participate in the America’s Cup and offshore races. We’ve had club members in the Olympics and boats that went to the Arctic Circle. You wouldn’t think that a club on an inland waterway would have reached so far in the boating world,” says Gregg.
Looking Forward
Today’s yachts range in size from 35- to 55-feet in length, while the sail- and steam-driven yachts of CYC founders were up to 155 feet long. The inlet just north of the clubhouse could once accommodate several 100-footers docked in a row during the Roaring Twenties, but the inlet has now filled in with silt and is not navigable at low tide.
The extension of the Philadelphia airport’s runway and dredging of the shipping channel less than a mile distant have both contributed to the shifting currents. Dredging the inlet to restore it to its former grandeur is a planned upgrade, but the project is currently mired in governmental red tape.
The removal of a hurricane-ravaged pier on the north side of the inlet has also been identified as a long-term goal. The overgrown concrete pier will be replaced by a modern pier with boat lifts and a launch ramp.
Major renovations started two years ago with the enclosure of an open-air porch to create waterfront dining in air-conditioned comfort. The porch had started to sag and required repair. Faced with a capital expense anyway, the CYC board opted to expand the project and refurbish the entire first floor of the building.
Other recent renovations include a new locker room facility in the clubhouse basement; adding a new bar area to the west end of the building; a $50,000 swimming pool makeover (swimming in the river is only done on an “inadvertent” basis by boaters, Gregg notes); a new driveway loop and brick front walkway, and the creation of a ‘green’ parking area to augment the existing paved lot.
The next major undertaking will be the restoration of the 100-year-old bulkhead that prevents erosion of the river embankment.
“Although we have great traditions and history, we are now focusing on our future as a viable and thriving club,” says Gregg.
Looking for members
“Growing our membership is a primary need,” Robinson notes.
Members can own a sailboat, a motor boat, or no boat at all.
“It’s for anyone who likes the water and the marine environment,” Gregg suggests.
CYC membership peaked in 1931, and currently stands at about 200 resident members, plus over 100 non-resident members who live more than 50 miles away.
“It’s always been a low-key kind of club, but I think we’re getting more into the mainstream now,” states Gregg. “We encourage families to join, because it’s kind of like an oasis here.”
Lunch and dinner are available to members, Wednesday through Sunday.
In addition to Wednesday evening sailboat races during the spring and summer, the club offers its members trap shooting every Sunday morning from October to April. The shooters, often in competition with other clubs in junior, women, and men’s categories, take up position at a row of stands and aim at clay pigeons launched over the river.
Monthly lectures are also offered during the winter. Topics are maritime-related, such as a recent presentation made by a CYC member who spent his first 13 years of retirement sailing around the world with this wife.
“There was a stigma about the CYC that it was a pretty snooty group – big Philadelphia names that didn’t want to socialize with anybody else,” Robinson recalls. “But now, the members here are just everyday guys.”
Membership fees include $1,500 per year as annual dues and a one-time initiation fee of $3,000. All equity members are part owner of the CYC. New members must be referred by a current member. Membership inquiries can be directed to Seigfried Boettjer at 610-644-8423.
Party, party, party …
An outdoor tent between the clubhouse and main pier hosts dinner and drinks for Wednesday evening race participants and spectators.
Groups as small as 25 (non-members included) can reserve the tent for outdoor events. Interested parties should call for details during renovations.
The CYC can seat 125-150 for sit-down banquets and 150-200 indoors for cocktail receptions. Catered wedding receptions are popular events, so weekend dates should be booked one year in advance. For more information, contact manager Terry Cullinan at 610-521-4705; by fax at 610-521-6037; or write to 300 W. Second Street, Essington, PA 19029.
“There’s nothing more beautiful than on a clear night to see the sun set down the river,” Robinson says of CYC ambience.

Optimist/Opti Our club Optimists can be sailed either single or double-handed. The quick response of the “Opti” offers immediate feedback on your sailing technique and is great for honing single-handed sailing skills for junior sailors. “Opti’s” are found all over the world, learn more here: http://www.optiworld.org/ Flying Scot Our Flying Scots have been especially rigged for ease of use and have a variable sail plan to allow for comfortable sailing in a wide range of conditions. Campers have fun learning the positions on the 19-foot boat at a speed that is easy to handle. They are excellent boats for some of the participants’ favorite activities like "fire drills" and "alligator fishing" that teach boat handling and safety skills within a game format. Click HERE for more information about the Flying Scot. For more information check out http://www.fssa.com/ C420 Our C420 sailboats are a stable boat chosen by many junior programs and they offer an ideal transition to a performance boat. They react more quickly than our Flying Scots and can be sailed easily by two or three junior sailors. While a simple and forgiving boat to operate, they offer our campers a more active and challenging sail. C420s are raced in junior programs and are the boat we use in our junior and scholastic programs. Learn more here: http://www.420sailing.org/ We hope you will choose to get involved!
