BUCHAREST – A court in Romania’s capital on Thursday rejected an appeal by prosecutors to jail divisive internet influencer Andrew Tate, who will remain under house arrest amid a second human trafficking investigation against him that allegedly involves minors.

The Bucharest Court of Appeal also ruled to keep Tate’s brother, Tristan Tate, under judicial control, which typically involves restricting communication with certain people and reporting periodically to the police. The brothers’ spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, said that the judge also lifted certain restrictions regarding the brothers’ communication with alleged victims in the new case.

“They are free to meet and communicate with these alleged victims based on the close relationships they share and the children they have together,” she said, adding they “vehemently deny all allegations” against them.

After the court’s decision, Andrew Tate posted on X that the prosecutors had made a “desperate attempt to put us in jail with no evidence."

The ruling comes weeks after Romania’s anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, launched raids on four homes , including the Tates’ in Bucharest and nearby Ilfov county. After being briefly detained, prosecutors lost a request to keep the brothers in custody for 30 days, but appealed the decision.

Andrew Tate, 37, and brother Tristan Tate, 36, both former kickboxers and dual British-U.S. citizens, are already awaiting trial in Romania in a separate human trafficking case along with two Romanian women. Romanian prosecutors formally indicted all four last year.

In the new case, DIICOT said that it was investigating allegations of human trafficking, including the trafficking of minors, sexual intercourse with a minor, forming an organized criminal group, money laundering and influencing statements. The alleged crimes date between 2014 and 2024.

The agency said the defendants used the coercive “loverboy” method to exploit 34 vulnerable victims who were forced to produce pornographic materials for a fee online, and that more than $2.8 million (2.5 million euros) it generated was kept by the defendants.

An unnamed foreign man also sexually exploited a 17-year-old foreigner, DIICOT alleges, and said he kept all of the $1.5 million (1.3 million euros) made from the criminal activity. The same man “repeatedly had sexual relations and acts” with a 15-year-old, the agency alleges.

After the court’s decision, Andrew Tate wrote in a post on the social media platform X that the prosecutors had made a “desperate attempt to put us in jail with no evidence."

Andrew Tate, who has 10 million followers on the social media platform X, is known for expressing misogynistic views online and has repeatedly said that prosecutors have no evidence against him and that there is a political conspiracy to silence him. He was previously banned from various social media platforms for misogynistic views and hate speech.

One of the brothers’ lawyers, Eugen Vidineac, responded to the court's decision Thursday by saying that it shows that Romania “is a country where the judicial system is diligent and impartial and does not succumb to sensationalism."

“We are looking forward to clearing my clients’ names and proving their innocence," he added.

After the Tate brothers’ arrest in December 2022, they were held for three months in police detention before being moved to house arrest. They were later restricted to the Bucharest municipality and nearby Ilfov county, and then to Romania.

In April, the Bucharest Tribunal ruled in that case that prosecutors’ case file against them met the legal criteria and that a trial could start but didn't set a date for it to begin.

In July, a court overturned an earlier decision that allowed the Tate brothers to leave Romania as they await trial.

The Andrew Tate Case in Romania: Here’s What to Know

The online influencer and his brother, Tristan Tate, face a variety of charges including human trafficking. They were released from house arrest while they await trial.

By Isabella Kwai

Andrew Tate, a wealth-flaunting online influencer known for his male chauvinism and misogynistic views, has been indicted in Romania for human trafficking and forming an organized criminal group.

Prosecutors formally filed an indictment against Mr. Tate and his younger brother, Tristan, in a Bucharest court in June. That means they will likely face a trial in Romania, although the timing is unclear, and the indictment still needs to be examined by a judge.

Mr. Tate won at least a temporary victory on Friday when a court ordered his release, along with his brother, from house arrest while they await trial, although the brothers said in a statement that their movements would still be subject to limitations.

After a court hearing in June, Mr. Tate thanked his supporters and accused the news media of lying. They were not the first wealthy men who had been “unfairly attacked,” he said, adding that, “I look forward to being found innocent,” Mr. Tate said.

Here’s what to know about the case.

Who is Andrew Tate?

Mr. Tate, 36, is a British American former competitive kickboxer who won greater fame after appearing as a contestant on the British reality television show “Big Brother” in 2016. He was ejected from the show, according to The Sun tabloid, after a video surfaced of him hitting a woman with a belt, which they both said was consensual.

He amassed a following of millions, many of them young men, across social media and appeared on podcasts boasting of get-rich-quick schemes and making demeaning comments about women. Mr. Tate has claimed that men are victims of feminism and that women “belong” to men and need men’s guidance. He has also described ways in which he would physically attack women and called them partly responsible if they were raped.

He has used ostentatious displays of wealth, such as a fleet of luxury cars, to signal his masculinity, and has promised to teach his followers through an online “academy” how to have the same lifestyle, charging them $49.99 a month.

He has also said that he is a victim of “the matrix” — an umbrella term for what he views as a conspiracy by corporate elites, feminists and mainstream politicians to target men.

Educators have raised concerns that Mr. Tate’s messaging is finding traction among young boys wrestling with their own ideas of masculinity in an era of changing gender roles. He and his followers say that his arrest has only fed into a narrative that men are being victimized.

Many social media sites have barred Mr. Tate, but he still has a presence on Twitter, where he has almost seven million followers.

What is Andrew Tate accused of?

The influencer, his brother and two Romanian women have been charged with forming an organized criminal group in 2021 and engaging in human trafficking across Romania, Britain and the United States. Prosecutors have kept some details of the charges against them confidential, but an official in the prosecutor’s office in Romania confirmed that the former kickboxer was also facing accusations of rape.

Investigators have identified seven women who say they were exploited by the group and forced into performing sexual acts on camera, which were then disseminated for financial gain. The brothers first misled the women, prosecutors said, by seducing them and promising them a relationship, a method known as “the lover boy,” and housing them in a compound outside the Romanian capital of Bucharest.

One of the women accused a defendant of raping her on two occasions in March 2022 by using violence and psychological pressure, the prosecutors said. On another occasion, when a woman refused to make more pornographic videos and asked to leave, one of the group used violence against her, they said.

The brothers have denied the accusations against them and maintain their innocence. Mr. Tate has called the case a conspiracy against him and framed himself as a martyr to his Twitter followers.

“Today it’s me. Tomorrow it’s you. Nobody is safe from these lies,” he posted on Twitter in June .

What led to the indictment?

Mr. Tate has been using Romania as a base since about 2016 and has not disguised his reasons for doing so to his fans.

“I like living in a society where my money, my influence and my power mean that I’m not below or beholden” to any laws, he told them.

He began drawing increased attention last December after he clashed online with the climate activist Greta Thunberg, asking for her email in a tweet so he could boast about his collection of cars and their “enormous emissions.”

Ms. Thunberg’s response, mocking Mr. Tate’s masculinity and suggesting that he needed to get a life, went viral.

There was also widespread speculation online about whether a distinctive pizza box featured in one of Mr. Tate’s tweets to Ms. Thunberg had alerted Romanian authorities to his presence in the country, but a Romanian official said that was not the case .

Mr. Tate, his brother and two others were arrested soon after and investigated for human trafficking, rape and forming an organized criminal group. Initially held in a Bucharest prison, the two were moved to house arrest three months later.

Mr. Tate has since framed himself as a philanthropist, promising to donate money to charity and “save the world.”

What happens next?

With the indictment submitted to the Bucharest court, prosecutors say the trial process will begin, though it will not be immediate. A judge in a preliminary chamber will first look at the case and determine the conditions the accused must adhere to before a date is set.

As part of the indictment, the authorities have requested the confiscation of the brothers’ assets, which they said included more than $100,000 in various currencies, cryptocurrencies valued at about $380,000, land and property in Romania and luxury goods. The defendants will also have to pay the legal costs of the case of about $60,000.

Andrew Tate's trial on charges of rape and human trafficking can start, a Romanian court rules

Andrew Tate

BUCHAREST, Romania — A court in Romania’s capital on Friday ruled that a trial can start in the case of influencer Andrew Tate, who is charged with human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women.

The Bucharest Tribunal ruled that prosecutors’ case file against Tate met the legal criteria but did not set a date for the trial to begin. Tate’s spokesperson, Mateea Petrescu, said the ruling has been appealed.

Tate, 37, was arrested in December 2022 near Bucharest along with his brother, Tristan Tate, and two Romanian women. Romanian prosecutors  formally indicted  all four in June last year. They have denied the allegations.

“The ruling issued by the preliminary chamber judge lacks legal basis and reasoning,” Eugen Vidineac, one of the brothers’ lawyers, said after the decision. “We have filed a strong appeal as we believe the ruling to be unlawful.”

Ahead of the court’s decision Friday, the legal case had been discussed for months in the preliminary chamber stages, a process in which the defendants can challenge prosecutors’ evidence and case file.

“We reassert our belief in the fairness of the arguments we presented during the preliminary hearing and in the memoranda concerning the legality of the criminal investigation,” said Ioan Gliga, another lawyer for the Tates. “Although they did not receive the necessary attention in the preliminary hearing, we are confident that the appeal court judge panel will support us.”

Andrew Tate, who has amassed 9.1 million followers on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has repeatedly claimed that prosecutors in Romania have no evidence against him and that there is a political conspiracy to silence him.

Tate was previously banned from various prominent social media platforms for expressing misogynistic views and for hate speech. Both Tates are dual British-U.S. citizens.

Last month, the Bucharest Tribunal  extended geographical restrictions against Tate , a former professional kickboxer, stipulating he cannot leave the country. Tate had requested that he be able to travel within the European Union with the prior approval of a judge.

After the Tate brothers’ arrest, they were held for three months in police detention before being moved to house arrest. They were later restricted to Bucharest Municipality and nearby Ilfov County, but can now travel freely around Romania.

Also last month, the Tate brothers appeared at the Bucharest Court of Appeal in a separate case, after  British authorities issued arrest warrants  over allegations of sexual aggression in a U.K. case dating back to 2012-2015.

The appeals court granted the British request to extradite the the Tates to the U.K., but only after legal proceedings in Romania have concluded.

Andrew Tate to regain access to supercars and properties after court overturns decision to seize his assets

Tate will now have access to his assets, which includes designer watches and ingots, while he awaits trial on rape and human trafficking charges.

Controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate will regain access to his supercars, properties and designer watches after a court overturned a decision to seize his assets.

Tate and his brother Tristan are facing rape and human trafficking charges in Romania, where they live, and had previously been in jail and later under house arrest since they were detained in December 2022.

In January 2023, prosecutors said they had seized 15 luxury vehicles and more than 10 properties and homes belonging to the suspects to prevent the assets from being sold or hidden.

Fourteen designers watches, two ingots - blocks of usually precious metal - and cash, were also confiscated, with authorities saying at the time the seized property was worth €3.6m (£3.12m).

It was reported the money could be used for compensation for his victims and to pay for the investigation if the allegations against him are proven.

Tate, a social media influencer known for his misogynistic videos, told reporters afterwards: "They took a lot of stuff... 15 cars, and they took a lot of things of a lot of value.

"It'd be nice to get my things back."

Tate will now have access to his assets after the Bucharest Court of Appeal overturned the decision which allowed them to be confiscated.

Eugen Vidineac, lead counsel for Tate, said after the appeal court's ruling: "We salute the decision today and applaud the judge for what we consider to be a legally correct and justified ruling. We will continue to explore all legal avenues to redeem the reputation of my clients."

It comes after Tate won an appeal in August 2023 to be released from house arrest as he awaits trial on a date which is yet to be decided.

Tate and his brother are now able to travel anywhere within Romania but cannot go abroad.

Romanian authorities descended on a compound near Bucharest on Saturday to tow away a fleet of luxury cars and other assets worth an estimated $3.9 million in the case investigating Andrew Tate, the divisive social media personality who is detained in the country on charges of human trafficking.

Romania's National Agency for the Administration of Unavailable Assets said in a statement that it removed a total of 15 luxury cars, 14 designer watches and cash in several currencies. The total value of the goods, the agency said, is estimated at 3.6 million euros ($3.9 million).

Tate, 36, a British-U.S. citizen who has 4.5 million followers on Twitter, was arrested on Dec. 29 in Bucharest along with his brother Tristan and two Romanian women on charges of being part of an organized crime group, human trafficking and rape.

On Tuesday, all four lost an appeal after a court upheld a judge’s Dec. 30 move to extend their arrest from 24 hours to 30 days. A day later, Tate lost another appeal that challenged assets seized by prosecutors in the case so far.

Romania's anti-organized crime agency, DIICOT, said it had seized 15 luxury vehicles in the case, and identified more than 10 properties and land owned by companies registered to the Tate brothers.

If prosecutors can prove they gained money through illicit activities including human trafficking, the assets could be used to cover the expenses of the investigation and compensation for victims, said Ramona Bolla, a DIICOT spokesperson.

Exclusive: Andrew Tate's Alleged Victim Speaks Out After 'Silly' Lawsuit

Andrew Tate's "audacity" to sue one of his alleged trafficking victims "strains the imagination," her lawyer has told Newsweek .

The notorious British-American YouTube personality is seeking $5 million from a group of defendants he says caused his arrest in Bucharest in December 2022. Tate and his brother, Tristan, were held by the Romanian organized crime squad, DIICOT, on charges of forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, human trafficking and evidence tampering. They have said they are innocent.

In July, the Tate brothers filed a lawsuit in Florida against five people, two of whom were women found at the compound by the authorities when DIICOT raided. The other defendants include a parent of a defendant and a male friend. That woman, named as Jane Doe, and her parents are American citizens and residents of Florida.

The second woman, whom Newsweek is naming as Mary Doe, was allegedly wooed to Romania by Tate under the belief she was in "a romantic relationship" with him.

Now, the Tates are suing her for defamation and claiming she "somehow caused their imprisonment," which caused them "emotional damages," according to Mary's attorney, Jill Roth.

"She was very young and fell in love with him by meeting him online and having a lot of really deep, emotional, spiritual conversations," Roth told Newsweek in an exclusive interview.

According to Roth, that all turned out to be a lie. She said the Romanian-Moldovan national was convinced to move from her home in the U.K. to be with Tate.

"So now we find ourselves having to defend a woman who is a human trafficking and sexual assault victim because her perpetrators accusing her for being the reason he was ever in jail," Roth said.

She added that Tate and his legal team must have done "logistical gymnastics" to come up with the reasoning for the lawsuit, especially to file it in Palm Beach, Florida.

Roth said they filed in Florida because Jane called her parents to tell them about what was happening to her on the phone from Romania.

"So their argument, which I disagree with, is that the cause of the harm and the action that caused them harm happened in Florida and the United States."

Roth added: "It feels almost silly to say it out loud. It's wild. It strains the imagination of the audacity of anyone taking this type of action against someone who they have perpetrated sexual crimes against."

But the Tate brothers defended their decision to pursue legal action in a statement to Newsweek.

"The U.S. constitution grants the right of every individual to seek justice in a court of law. The brothers are simply pursuing their constitutional right. The recent Eleanor Williams case in the U.K. is a relevant precedent that explains why such legal actions are sometimes necessary," a spokesperson for the brothers said.

Williams was 22 when she was convicted in January for perverting the course of justice after claiming she had been groomed and trafficked by an Asian gang, and for accusing other men of rape. She had posted photos of herself looking bruised to Facebook in 2020 where she fabricated the allegations, which sparked a worldwide solidarity campaign called "Justice for Ellie."

The judge in the English court sentenced Williams to eight and a half years in jail, saying her actions posed "a risk that genuine victims will be reluctant as a result of this to come forward," per The Guardian.

However, research has found that false allegations of sexual assault and rape are very low , and may even be inflated due to fallacies within the police procedures and the legal process.

"Research shows that rates of false reporting are frequently inflated, in part because of inconsistent definitions and protocols, or a weak understanding of sexual assault," according to one study by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

"Misconceptions about false reporting rates have direct, negative consequences and can contribute to why many victims don't report sexual assaults."

Roth describes Mary as a strong young woman who would stand firm in the face of the lawsuit and recovery from the alleged abuse at the hands of Tate but can't deny the ordeal has "taken a toll on her life."

According to Roth, an unredacted copy version of Tate's Romanian criminal indictment leaked online which revealed her identity and led to months of doxxing and threats. One person found all of her family's addresses and threatened to go to their homes and send them inappropriate photos of her.

Another allegedly copied all of her LinkedIn contacts and warned her to redact her statement against Tate otherwise he would email her professional contacts with "lies and terrible accusations." Mary even had to take time away from work after someone learned the address and threatened to come down to hurt her.

"Imagine being a young professional out of school starting out in your career. It's hard enough as it is... but now you're having someone that you don't know from somewhere else in the world, contacting people that you work with and telling them the most vile lies about you," Roth says.

Roth also suggests Tate filed the lawsuit as a means to intimidate Mary or at least embarrass her publicly.

"What they're really doing is saying, if you keep speaking out about me, I'm going to make you pay," she explains.

"Also one of the intentions is really an opportunity to air everything out in a public document. Anything that they want about to say about their victim they can now do legally... you can put anything you want on a piece of paper and upload it to the docket as long as you pay the couple $100 fee to do that in United States, and it becomes public."

In fact, two out of every three sexual assaults in the U.S. are not reported to police, with one of the major reason given as the fear of retaliation, according to anti-sexual violence organization RAINN.

Roth and her team, including lawyers from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, are working to have the lawsuit dismissed.

Tate was a professional mixed martial artist before he joined the reality series Big Brother U.K. in 2016, gaining notoriety for his misogynistic comments. A series of tweets also emerged while he was in the Big Brother house that included racist and homophobic comments.

He was eventually removed from the house because of what he claimed was a video leaked showed him whipping a woman with a belt in what appeared to be a sex act. Tate said the act was consensual.

But the production company that made Big Brother told Newsweek that it learned while the show was running that Tate was the subject of a police investigation.

"Extensive background checks are made on all potential housemates including criminal record checks and self-declaration of any criminal matters. Given that no charges had been made against Andrew Tate at the time, the criminal record checks available to us were clear," a spokesperson Banijay UK told Newsweek . Banijay purchased Endemol, which previously produced Big Brother in 2020.

"However as soon as we were made aware by Hertfordshire Police on 8th June 2016 that Andrew Tate was being investigated by the police, we began a process of extensive consultation with Channel 5, and legal teams, including the lawyers representing Andrew Tate.

"During this period, and whilst we sought to clarify the detail required by Channel 5, Andrew was closely monitored at all times. He was removed from the house on 13th June."

In 2013, an unnamed woman accused Tate of rape in the U.K, but police never charged him with a crime. Two other women reportedly accused Tate of similar treatment but prosecutors decided in 2019 not to pursue charges.

Following his arrest in Romania, where he awaiting trial, four women in the U.K. filed a civil suit against him and accused him of multiple crimes against them between 2013 and 2016, including rape, physical violence and coercive control. He has also denied these claims.

Describing himself as the "king of toxic masculinity," Tate was temporarily barred from a number of social media platforms including Twitter and Instagram due to his derogatory remarks about women and LGBTQ people, and domestic violence organizations accused Tate of radicalizing boys and men.

Tate offered courses in cryptocurrency and also for men to teach them how to lead an "ultra-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle."

Before his arrest in Romania, he split his time between Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and his "Hustler's University" compound in Bucharest.

Specialists from the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) sexual assault hotline are available 24/7 via phone (1 (800) 656-4673) and online chat . Additional support from the group is also accessible via the mobile app .

Update 12/15/23, 10:42 a.m.: This story was updated to include comment from Banijay U.K.

Andrew Tate, known for his extravagant lifestyle and controversial statements, made headlines in 2022 when he purchased a private yacht worth an astounding $100 million.

Christened “The Freedom,” this super yacht is as much a symbol of luxury as it is of Tate’s defiance against conventional norms.

The Freedom Yacht

“The Freedom” is one of the most expensive yachts in the world, offering a glimpse into Tate’s luxurious lifestyle.

Not just a vessel, this super yacht is a floating palace equipped with all the amenities one could imagine.

Escape After Social Media Ban

Interestingly, Tate embarked on a trip aboard his super yacht shortly after being banned from several major social media platforms.

This voyage was seen as a form of escapism, a way for him to enjoy his freedom and live life on his terms, away from the constraints of the digital world.

Specifications and Features

The specifications of “The Freedom” are truly impressive. Built by the renowned Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co, the yacht measures a staggering 142 meters (465 feet) in length.

It boasts a range of luxury features, including spacious living quarters, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and even a gym with the heaviest weights Tate could find, as he mentioned in a tweet.

Why the Yacht is Famous

“The Freedom” has gained fame not just because of its owner but also due to its sheer size, luxury, and the circumstances surrounding its purchase. The fact that Tate bought it after being canceled and banned from social media has only added to its allure.

Despite the controversies surrounding him, he continues to make literally and figuratively waves with “The Freedom”.
