Most of the marinas are located in Fethiye, Gocek, Bodrum and Marmaris, which are located on the Aegean coast. Any of the resorts can be the starting point of the route, regardless of its duration. Marmaris, which offers the most comfortable sailing conditions, is located between Fethiye and Bodrum. This bay can be an optimal starting point for traveling in any direction and visiting various Turkish harbors. The city is in close proximity to Dalaman International Airport.

Bodrum is famous for its comfortable and modern marina, where about four thousand yachts stop. Marina is a small town where all the necessary services are available to tourists . There are various travel agency offices, post offices, supermarkets and shops, restaurants and bars.

The village of Gocek is located in the vicinity of Dalaman. The marina is located in the bay of Fethiye and has a large number of anchorages. You will get to Gocek from the international airport in half an hour.

Which routes are popular

Various routes are available for experienced and novice yachtsmen. Most often, ships run between Fethiye and Marmaris, Bodrum and Marmaris. Mostly yachts from Fethiye sail in the direction of Kekova and Antalya.

At least one person from the group must have an international level certificate allowing to operate a yacht in order to charter a yacht without a crew. The Turkish authorities are loyal to the organizations that issue the appropriate certificates. Most often, any certificate is enough, even if it's issued by a Russian yachting school without a license.

It will be easy for you to choose the most suitable option among a large number of yachts. You just need to book the desired ship at least 2-3 months before the date of arrival in the country.

The yacht can be rented for a different period depending on your wishes. Sometimes shipowners offer a customized schedule. As a rule, in the low season, more loyal charter conditions are provided, but with a fixed starting and ending points of the route. The airports of Istanbul, Bodrum, Dalaman, Antalya, and Izmir carry out daily international flights, so getting to any resort will not be problematic.

Sailing in Turkey - Geography

Turkey, the size of France and Germany together, is located between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It’s coastline runs 5,176 miles (8,330 km) with the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Mediterranean to the west, plus the Bosphorus, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The capital of Turkey, Istanbul (or known as Constantinople before), located right on the spot – dividing or connecting Europe and Asia, is a true wealth of the Byzantine Christian and Muslim (Ottoman) Turkish heritage. It is a delightful conglomerate of numerous tourist attraction: mosques and churches, palaces and castles, Turkish bathes and bazaars. Istanbul is a pure reflection of fast-changing nation. Contrasts between old and new, high-rise modernisation and lack of adequate essentials are merely shocking. But surprisingly this striking feature enchants even more travellers to this region. Origins of the Turks The Turkish people are descendants from the tribes of Central Asian nomads or the Turkmen.

The history of Turkey is as long as that of mankind. Known as Anatolia, or as Asia Minor before, this land has seen so many ups and downs of many great civilisations ( the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines an Ottomans) that it is hard to squeeze it in any narration. In the middle of the 11th century, the tribe invaded Persia, and when Baghdad fell in 1055, the powerful Great Seljuk Sultanate was declared as the centre of the Islamic world. But in 1243 it was defeated by the Mongols. During 13 and 14th centuries many Christians converted to Islam, because the Mongols offered reduced taxation for Muslims. The Mongols ruled Anatolia till 1335, then Osman founded a dynasty known as the Ottomans and created one of the most powerful empires. By the mid of 1500s, the Ottoman sultan was the central figure of Muslim world. In the 1870s, reformist movement known as the Young Ottomans began to push for a constitutional monarchy. In 1912 and 1913 the empire lost most of its remaining European possessions in the Balkan War. By 1918 only the heartland of Anatolia remained of the Ottoman Empire. In 1923 the Turkish Republic was proclaimed with the First Constitution implemented. During World War II, Turkey pursued peaceful policy and remained neutral.

Most of Turkey’s population (76 million people) follows Islam. The most devoted pray 5 times a day in mosques, while some Turkish do not go to mosques at all. Approximately 130,000 are non-Muslims, including Greek and Armenian Orthodox.

The Turkish language uses the Latin alphabet. But their greatly animated body language can deliver as much a message as a speech itself. The traditional segregation of the sexes is very noticeable. You may often come across groups of men sitting around smoking, drinking endless cups of tea, playing cards or dominos. Numerous festivals, where food and drinks play a central role, demonstrate sincere hospitality and generosity. The age-old Turkish traditions demand absolute respect of elders and cherish their children as national treasures.

The outcome of this country’s long and sometimes violent past reflects itself in its art and architecture and also alters or introduces its traditions and customs. Many peoples, among them Jews, Russians, Armenians, Greek and others have played an important part in Turkey ‘s complex history. It can be seen in mosaics and frescoes, colourful tile work, city walls, fortress and biblical sights.

Customs and traditions.

The Turkish customs, passed from generation to generation, are well-preserved in contemporary life. The Islamic tradition to circumcise boys from the ages of seven and ten is a very lavish occasion. All men over the age of 20 are required to serve in the military forces, which is considered to be a crucial step to manhood. Wedding festivities, which take a lot of preparations of cooking, dressing and dancing are one of the most impressive rituals. Traditional dress as a colourful designed costume, always goes with decorative scarves (both for men and women), dyed with a plant extracts. The traditional crafts are mostly man-made: copper and brass ware; woodwork; hand-printed textiles; quilts, etc. For example, needle lace is an intricate floral design crocheted in silk.

Turkey is a large territory for variety of landscapes and geographical diversity: seascapes, soft beaches and rolling mountains along the Mediterranean coast and deep lush forests of the Black Sea, with vast bare areas in the eastern part. About one quarter of Turkey is covered with forest: pine, spruce and cedar, as well as deciduous trees. 80 % of the country is in active tectonic zone, and earthquakes are frequent. Cappadocia is a must see geological miracle. The hardened volcanic ash (the tuff) was weathered away, creating some majestic formations. Earlier in age even cities were constructed underground, because the softness of the tuff made it easy to build different dwellings underground.

Flora and Fauna

Turkey can surprise any naturalist with abundance of bird life (more than 440 species), larger mammals and diversity of plants. Some of this unspoiled countryside zones are declared as national parks. Each area presents different flora and fauna. The forests of the eastern provinces are habitat for bears, wolves or jackals. The Mediterranean coast grows roses, orchids, lilies, daffodils, etc. Wetlands are famous for water lilies and irises; while woodlands – peonies and jasmine.

Various range of mountains and coastal line of seaside correspondently influence climatic regions in Turkey. The Aegean and the Mediterranean will produce 84F (29C) in July and 48F (9C) in January. Winter is mostly a rainy season here. Annual precipitation in Antalya is 39 in, while the rainfall along the Black Sea is much heavier – 96 inches a year. The northeast has warm summers, but colder winters with temperatures of 16F (-9C). The central plateau has hot dry summers of 73F (23C) and chilly moist winters of 32F (0 C). The coastline of Turkey predictably delivers warm summers and mild winters, with mostly sunny days throughout the year. From May till the end of August it may be windy, but it never reaches its 25 Knots Mark. When going east the winds become weaker, thus more comfortable for sailing.

All national and regional holidays can be divided into 3 categories: Religious feasts celebrated by the Islamic people; festivities associated with events or people of historic significance; traditional festivals, usually tied with a seasonal theme. Turkey has four distinct seasons and different types of celebrations are spread accordingly. In spring there are Tulip Festival in April, Yunus Emre Culture and Art week in May, and Marmaris Race week or International Yachting Festival the 2nd week of May. In summer because of the high temperatures, there is nothing better than to be closer to the seaside. International swimming race is held near the Greek island of Meis. Kirkpinar Festival and Grease wrestling Championship is usually in the last week of June. Istanbul Music Festival is a well known event for opera, theatre and ballet lovers. Autumn is a harvesting season, no wonder there are so many festivals based on the crops: watermelon, grapes, etc. The still warm sea welcomes water sports enthusiasts. International Bodrum Cup Regatta is held in the third week of October, and limited only to few categories of wooden yachts. Race week (last week of October to first of Nov.) takes place in Marmaris and is supervised by the Turkish Sailing Federation. Second week of September will attract dance couples to six-day Tango Festival, also held in Marmaris. In winter the local museums and art galleries will give you a shelter from rain and snow. Although Christmas is ignored by the Turks, New Year’s Day is widely celebrated throughout Turkey. In the mid of January, it is worth visiting the ruined Roman theatre of Ephesus, where the Camel Wrestling Championship is held.

Conveniently surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Aegean Sea in the west and the Black Sea up north, it is no wonder that water sports, and especially sailing, are prevailing in this area. Besides, Turkey provides the longest sailing season in the Mediterranean. There are indeed a lot of advantages for sailors in this area. Secluded sandy bays and coves, lush forested hills, ruins of ancient dwellings – sometimes are hidden from explorers and can be discovered only by water. One of the main yacht centres, located on the Bodrum peninsula, is a perfect spot for sailing or dinghy racing. The 15 century Castle, well visible from the harbour, houses a Museum of Underwater Archeology these days. Yalikavak, used to be a sponge-fishing port, is a good place to try local delicacies: sea beans and stuffed marrow flowers.

Marmaris, which used to be a quaint fishing village, set in a sheltered bay, is now a vibrant resort and can be easily compared to the Spanish Ibiza. Marmaris is another popular sailing and diving centre with Netsel Marina, as Turkey ‘s largest and most luxurious marinas, and several smaller ones as well. There is berthing for over 750 yachts up to 130 ft (40m) long. Marmaris is a safe anchorage with no underwater currents, sandbanks or rocks.

On the way from Bodrum to Marmaris you’ll come across Gocek, a small village with 5 well- equipped marinas. With a beam of 6.5 meters and three decks, the yacht's voluminous, open-plan layout boasts 20% more internal volume than other comparable-sized boats. She can accommodate eight guests and four crew in a volume of 150GT. On the main deck, full-height windows give amazing uninterrupted views onto the water. This space has a lounge area with adjustable seating and a fully equipped minibar, while the dining area, which can seat up to 12, features one of the largest glass panels found on a yacht this size. A migrant has died off a Greek island after smugglers ditched 31 people in the sea to avoid patrols

Greek authorities say one migrant has died after smugglers piloting a speedboat from Turkey to an Aegean Sea island forced their passengers into the sea to avoid detection by marine patrols

ATHENS, Greece -- One migrant died after smugglers piloting a speedboat from Turkey to an Aegean Sea island forced their passengers into the sea on Tuesday to avoid detection by marine patrols, Greek authorities said.

The remaining 30 migrants on the vessel were unhurt, a coast guard statement said.

The statement said the incident occurred off the eastern island of Samos, which is close to the Turkish coast. It said the speedboat was detected after the migrants — including eight children — had been forced overboard. It was stopped following a chase in which coast guard fired warning gunshots that caused no injury.

Two Turkish men on the vessel that had been heading back to Turkey were arrested and charged with migrant smuggling and actions that led to the loss of life.

The statement said 27 people managed to swim ashore to Samos. A search and rescue operation later located three migrants alive in the water and the body of a man. Nobody else was reported missing.

Greece is a major entry point for people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia seeking a better life in Europe. Most enter by sea from nearby Turkey, with the help of smuggling gangs that charge thousands of dollars per person for the passage.

Following increased policing of Greece's eastern Aegean waters, smugglers have for months been using high-powered speedboats to try to dodge patrols. This has led to a series of confrontations in which speedboats rammed coast guard vessels, and in one case a migrant was fatally shot as coast guards opened fire on a smuggling boat.

Alternatively, smugglers cram dozens of migrants into sailing yachts that try to circumvent patrols by heading through the central Aegean Sea toward Italy.

There’s something about sleeping on a boat. It’s the rocking, of course, and the sound of the water. It’s also the cocoon effect of containment in a small space tucked away from the world. I’m not talking about cruise ships and luxury yachts here. I’m talking about a vessel that gently rocks, just enough to let a person know she’s not on dry land. If you suffer from seasickness, this could be an issue. As for me, I never sleep better than I do on a boat.

Now imagine this boat is docked in Paris. You wake up to a view straight out of a French movie from the 1950s and finish your day under a full moon.

In June I got to experience that (all but the full moon, but more on that later).

My fixation was not a recent one. I’d been eyeing boats — specifically péniches, riverboats used originally for commercial purposes — for more than 30 years, as long as I’d been visiting Paris. Then, at a party in Paris last fall, my last night in the city before heading home to the United States, I met a Dutch couple — Jan and Lydia — who invited me to their péniche for a drink.

Docked along the Right Bank — midway between the Pont de la Concorde and the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor — my new friends’ péniche sat in the middle of my favorite city, but in a world of its own, away from traffic and crowds. As perfect a combination as I could dream up.

The evening was warm. We sat on the deck as Jan set out wine glasses and a bottle of Champagne. Across the water, the Eiffel Tower sparkled.

“If you ever hear of someone who might like to rent their péniche for a week or two,” I said, “let me know.”

A pleasant level of funkiness

It turns out that you can, in fact, book a Parisian péniche on Airbnb and Vrbo (prices range from under $100 a night for houseboats a few miles outside Paris, in locations like Neuilly-sur-Seine, to $500 a night or more for a luxury péniche in central Paris), as well as through various rental agencies in the city, including Paris Attitude and Bookahouseboat.com . But before I had time to research these, my new friends made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

“When you come back you can stay with us,” Jan said.

In June I returned to Paris. In the months since that fall evening on Jan and Lydia’s boat, I’d had plenty of opportunities to imagine the scenes of warm nights on the deck, Champagne in hand.

But on this June day, it was raining hard when I arrived, the wind whipping off the water.

My Uber dropped me off on the busy thoroughfare directly above the quay where Jan and Lydia’s péniche was moored, which required me to haul my suitcase down a set of steps to the water. A small price to pay.

The péniche was one of a dozen or so lining the riverbank — most roughly the same size, a little over 100 feet, some appointed with cafe seating and planters, children’s playthings (deck space sufficiently open to allow for a tricycle or two), pergolas, and in one case, an amphibious car.

But though a few of the boats appeared to have been elaborately renovated, most conveyed a pleasant level of funkiness.

Watch your footing

My dream of staying on a péniche is not one shared with everyone who visits Paris, or lives there. Even though it costs less to live on a péniche than it would to occupy a space of comparable square footage in one of the better arrondissements in Paris, many Parisians view the vessels as more trouble than they’re worth. And it’s true: All that character and romance requires a certain level of open-mindedness, possession of a baseline level of handy skills, a willingness to come face to face with the elements and sufficient agility that navigating the deck on a windy day won’t put you off.

In most areas where péniche s are docked (including my hosts’), they’re lined up in rows two boats deep, which means that to step onto the vessel on the outside edge, a person has to walk across the deck of the boat pulled up alongside the quay, and then it’s a quick hop across a wooden platform. If you don’t feel like taking a dip in the Seine, it’s a good idea to watch one’s footing. For me, all of that was part of the adventure.

A person unfamiliar with péniche life might imagine small, cramped spaces inside, but the boat belonging to my Dutch friends felt nearly as expansive as a New York City loft — with a kitchen large enough to accommodate a couple of cooks at once, extending out to a dining and living room area, bedrooms at either end, two bathrooms and an area where a captain might sit, if the boat were actually traversing the river, as this one no longer did.

In the old days, when péniches and barges were used to transport goods up and down the river, smaller boats often pulled them — or animals did from the riverbanks. These days, most péniches stay docked, though sometimes their owners haul them away in the off-season for repairs.

A different aspect

In addition to the built-in bed, my room housed a drum set and a couple of guitars (owing to my friends’ participation in a rock band), along with a desk. From the bed, I could look out across the water to the Assemblée Nationale and a row of other buildings along the Left Bank. But the best view was from above.

We’re speaking of the deck, the most important element of a péniche experience. Some péniche owners cultivate elaborate gardens — lemon trees, roses, planters of vegetables — but the main attraction of a péniche deck is how it opens up onto the city’s skyline. Over my many trips to Paris, I’d never beheld what I did from the deck of that boat: an utterly unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower.

The morning after my arrival, I woke to rain, and drank my coffee from the enclosure of the small captain’s cabin. Next morning, more rain. I ventured out anyway, crossing one of the many bridges spanning the Seine for croissants and a baguette.

Back on the boat, there was a little gas stove in the living room. My hosts and I turned it on.

As things worked out, the rain held for the entire week of my stay. But once I let go of my romantic dream of clear and balmy evenings looking out over the water, I was able to embrace a different picture of my time on the péniche. As much as my little cocoon bed sheltered me from the weather, something compelled me to venture out on the deck every night, even when the rain was pelting down its hardest, and the water was dark and choppy. This, too, was Paris. Just a different aspect.

I made it my tradition every evening of my stay to close out each day on the boat by looking out to the Eiffel Tower — one rare constant in this turbulent and shifting world.

One night the fog was so thick it even obscured the lights from the tower, but I could still make out its presence, along with that of the last bateau mouche (each one named for a French movie star from times gone by) transporting passengers from one end of the city to the other.

Bundled up in my friend’s rain jacket, I considered what a gift it was that I could stand under the night sky, rather than staring up at a hotel room ceiling. Somewhere up there, under the clouds, there were stars.
