Motor yacht TRUE NORTH has a country feel to its interior décor, boasting a very social atmosphere with plenty of areas to relax. True North’s interior layout sleeps up to 36 guests in 18 rooms, 10 double cabins and 8 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 20 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Her leisure and entertainment facilities make her perfect for entertaining friends and family on your charter vacation. My life in boats: Dick Schmidt, owner of 36m True North

I started sailing when I was eight years old, but I was 26 before I bought my first sailboat, a 9.4 metre ketch. During the 1970s and 80s I did a lot of ocean racing; my favourite event was the Solo Offshore Racing Club. I did well, won a lot of races – the most memorable was beating Ted Turner in the Lipton Cup in 1973.

During my racing career, I had three boats, the most famous was Red Jacket , a 12 metre custom sloop, and my last racing boat in the mid 1980s was a Farr 40 called American Pie . Now I have two Lasers on board my 35.9 metre Broward True North ; that’s how I get my fix.

I designed and built powerboats as a hobby, so it was an easy transition from sail to power. I built a monster boat, an expedition yacht called True North from 2004 to 2007. My intention was to circumnavigate the world north to south, but all I knew after five months was there was no place I wanted to go to that wasn’t within 1,000 miles of my Florida home. I turned the boat around, sold it and made a lot of money.

My favourite cruising ground is the Bahamas – particularly the Abacos and the Exumas for their beautiful beaches – but you have to bring your own entertainment. You won’t find it there.

I do everything with a passion; my current boat I completely refurbished and made it personal. I’ve had about 12 boats and 21 planes. I co-pilot my current plane, a 10 seat Challenger. As a member of the Red Stars, I flew Soviet light attack fighter jets at air shows but these days I spend a lot of time running the Schmidt Family Foundation and I’ve started writing fiction.

My wife, Barbara, is the author of an international bestseller about meditation and being present called The Practice ; it’s good to have her close by. My first book was about the relationship between a boy and a dolphin; the second was inspired by the television show Homeland – I wondered what they did with retired heads of the CIA – and now I am on my third, a thriller involving a Cuban immigrant.

I have a sense of adventure and love being on the water, diving, all of that stuff, but I loved it more in the 80s when we didn’t have cell phones. If I wanted to call the office, I had to find a phone booth on some island and I only had to check in once a week. Now everyone wants you right away.

Captain: Glen Smith

Glen Smith - Captain Raised just outside of Southampton on the South Coast of England, Glen has always loved yachting and the ocean. Educated as an electrician, he began his career in the yachting industry as a Deckhand/2nd Engineer in Turkey 27 years ago. Glen advanced to Mate/Engineer on sport fishing yachts travelling extensively throughout the Bahamas and the Caribbean then became Chief Engineer on mega yachts cruising the same waters. He went on to earn his 200-ton MCA approved Captain’s license and has since captained charter as well as private use yachts in the Bahamas and Caribbean. Glen is passionate about motorcycles, is an avid sport fisherman and loves to snorkel. Claire Dodd - Chef Born in Bournemouth on the south coast of England, Claire was raised bilingual, in English and German. Having family throughout Europe, she began her love of travel and meeting people from an early age. Claire graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in languages and went on to gain employment in customer relations within the banking sector. Wanting a change, Claire took on the management of a B&B overlooking the historic town and castle of Corfe, situated on the English Jurassic coast. Here she also started a restaurant, catering lunches and evening meals for guests. Claire spent a few years traveling and working in a variety of hotels, bars, and restaurants in different countries around the globe before beginning her yachting career 10 years ago. Claire’s interests include art, music, and the outdoors. Erica Medhurst – Stewardess From the sun-kissed shores of California's Central Coast, Erica's heart has always been drawn to the ocean's embrace. In her earlier days, she lent her skills to the hospitality industry, mastering the art of serving and bartending. Even as she pursued her degree in chemistry, her passion for the ocean and its wonders never faded. And so, when the winds of fate carried her towards the enchanting world of yachting, she knew she had found her calling. Beyond the waves, she delights in exploring new horizons and indulging in outdoor pursuits. On land, she seeks solace in the grace of softball and the tranquility of yoga. Cam Cresswell - Mate Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Cam grew up with a passion for surfing and fishing. After deciding to join the yachting industry he helped deliver a catamaran from Cape Town to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After five amazing years in the yachting industry and lots of traveling, Cam took a hiatus to California and got into the real estate industry. The call of the ocean drew Cam back and he obtained his 200 ton captain’s license with an engineering certificate. Cam’s interests include traveling, hiking, golfing and spending time with family in Reno. Ben Davis – Deckhand Born in Alabama, into a Military family, Ben has already traveled much of the world. At an early age he took up sailing. With a new-found love and enthusiasm, he convinced his local Sailing Centre to take him on as their youngest dock hand, paying him in experience and sailing lessons. Ben also discovered he had a passion for Airsoft which led him to full time employment after high school, where he quickly progresses to a senior member of the team, training others and refereeing games. His sense of adventure and love of the outdoors, coupled with his former aquatic adventures drew him to try a career in yachting. Ben was noticed and quickly picked up during his yacht training and then joined “True North” as a permanent crew member. Ben’s other interests include: Rock climbing, water sports, fitness, strategy games and reading.

Glen advanced to Mate/Engineer on sport fishing yachts travelling extensively throughout the Bahamas and the Caribbean then became Chief Engineer on mega yachts cruising the same waters. He went on to earn his 200-ton MCA approved Captain’s license and has since captained charter as well as private use yachts in the Bahamas and Caribbean. Glen is passionate about motorcycles, is an avid sport fisherman and loves to snorkel. <br /> <br /> Claire Dodd - Chef <br /> Born in Bournemouth on the south coast of England, Claire was raised bilingual, in English and German. Having family throughout Europe, she began her love of travel and meeting people from an early age. Claire graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in languages and went on to gain employment in customer relations within the banking sector. Wanting a change, Claire took on the management of a B&B overlooking the historic town and castle of Corfe, situated on the English Jurassic coast. Here she also started a restaurant, catering lunches and evening meals for guests. Claire spent a few years traveling and working in a variety of hotels, bars, and restaurants in different countries around the globe before beginning her yachting career 10 years ago. Claire’s interests include art, music, and the outdoors. <br /> <br /> Erica Medhurst – Stewardess<br /> From the sun-kissed shores of California's Central Coast, Erica's heart has always been drawn to the ocean's embrace. In her earlier days, she lent her skills to the hospitality industry, mastering the art of serving and bartending. Even as she pursued her degree in chemistry, her passion for the ocean and its wonders never faded. And so, when the winds of fate carried her towards the enchanting world of yachting, she knew she had found her calling. Beyond the waves, she delights in exploring new horizons and indulging in outdoor pursuits. On land, she seeks solace in the grace of softball and the tranquility of yoga.<br /> <br /> Cam Cresswell - Mate<br /> Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Cam grew up with a passion for surfing and fishing. After deciding to join the yachting industry he helped deliver a catamaran from Cape Town to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After five amazing years in the yachting industry and lots of traveling, Cam took a hiatus to California and got into the real estate industry. The call of the ocean drew Cam back and he obtained his 200 ton captain’s license with an engineering certificate. Cam’s interests include traveling, hiking, golfing and spending time with family in Reno. <br /> <br /> Ben Davis – Deckhand<br /> Born in Alabama, into a Military family, Ben has already traveled much of the world. At an early age he took up sailing. With a new-found love and enthusiasm, he convinced his local Sailing Centre to take him on as their youngest dock hand, paying him in experience and sailing lessons. Ben also discovered he had a passion for Airsoft which led him to full time employment after high school, where he quickly progresses to a senior member of the team, training others and refereeing games. His sense of adventure and love of the outdoors, coupled with his former aquatic adventures drew him to try a career in yachting.
