Sparta wins at the 2023 World Yachts Trophies

We are delighted to announce that Sparta won Best Exterior Design, 50-82m at the 2023 World Yachts Trophies. The awards ceremony took place on Saturday 16 th September at Carlton Beach during the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Sparta is the largest steel-hull displacement yacht ever built at Heesen and features both exterior and interior design by Winch Design. Sparta stems from a concept design, Project Avanti, which we presented with Heesen at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show. The clients were immediately impressed by the yacht's athletic-looking lines, and the design remained true to the original concept, with only minor adjustments made to the swimming pool. Winch Design expertly incorporated Heesen's DNA to create a unique, low-profile, sporty, and elegant yacht that sits beautifully on the water.

Sparta sports a classic livery in Snow White with a contemporary touch: metallic Venetian red and metallic anthracite grey details give her a modern appearance. The yacht's profile is characterised by a reverse bow, augmenting her apparent length and emphasising her slender form, which is complimented by a bold and assertive sweep of thermobonded tinted glass from bow to stern.

The yacht boasts a generous interior volume of 1,200 GT. The general arrangement features two separate owner's suites on a private deck and four guest suites on the main deck forward, with the forward suites featuring a movable partition to create a full beam VIP or a large playroom for the younger family members. An elegant oval staircase and a glass elevator serve all three decks. The lower deck is home to a 65sqm Japanese inspired wellness area featuring an oval whirlpool, steam room, sauna, gym, and beauty area.

The lifestyle on board Sparta revolves around family. The centre of the social activities is on the main deck aft, which features a full beam main saloon perfectly connected with the low transom open-air beach terrace perfect for enjoying life in and next to the sea. A transformer passerelle platform grants easy access to the water. The 6.5m infinity pool is a breath-taking sight, drawing the eye from onboard to the vastness of the ocean.

The Winch Design interior is based around three different elements, with each deck representing a different component: the lower deck is themed around water, the main deck around earth and the upper deck around air. The journey through the elements is centralised through a fully carved oak staircase by Alex Hull, using staggered panelling and vertical lighting to bring the intricate carving to life.

The earth themed main saloon features dining chairs with seat backs upholstered in real palm leaf. A large coffee table takes centre stage in the relaxed seating area, made from two parts of a large dark brushed oak tree trunk, it features a forest green marble with a leathered finish, providing a tactile and 3D effect to the leaf like tabletop. The décor of the master suite on the upper deck aft beautifully captures the lightness of air, using soft fabrics, sky blues, mother-of-pearl inlays and an abstract patterned Tai Ping carpet. In contrast, the forward section is centred around the theme of space, with a large constellation wall artwork as the focal point.

The yacht's outdoor spaces feature custom-designed furniture by Winch Design, beautifully crafted by Siebensee and Leerdam. Sparta's matching custom limo tender, a mini version of the mothership, is conveniently stored, along with the water toys, behind the gullwing doors of the forward garage.

SUNSEEKER TRIUMPHANT AT THE 2023 WORLD YACHTS TROPHIES

Sunseeker received two awards at the 2023 World Yachts Trophies for its exceptional design innovation. The Superhawk 55 won ‘Best Exterior Design’ in the 45’ to 64’ category for its dynamic exterior profile and innovative lifestyle features. For its outstanding interior design, the Ocean 182 won the ‘Best Layout’ award in the 80′ to 98′ category. The Ocean 182 launched at Newport International Boat Show last week and has already received industry-leading recognition for the new floating penthouse concept and intelligent use of interior space.

The World Yachts Trophies recognises the best motor yachts launched this year. Sunseeker is a proud winner, receiving recognition from the prestigious jury panel. Sunseeker, alongside Sunseeker London Group, were presented with the trophies during a spectacular awards ceremony that welcomed the world’s leading industry professionals to the bay of Cannes.

Andrea Frabetti, Chief Executive Officer at Sunseeker International, commented: “Taking home two awards at this year’s World Yachts Trophies signifies the strength of Sunseeker’s approach to innovative design. We are thrilled to win awards for the latest product launches that have made waves worldwide. The World Yachts Trophies is one of the most prestigious international awards in the yachting industry. Receiving these awards is a great testament to our design, manufacturing and engineering teams for continuing to push the boundaries and deliver a world class product.”

Best Exterior Design – Superhawk 55

The sensational Sunseeker Superhawk 55 sets a new standard for style, practicality and the ultimate boat owner experience. A sculptured full-beam aft cockpit makes full use of the yacht’s incredible width, benefitting from generous configurable seating and concealed appliances integrated into the feature wet bar and optional rise and fall TV. The central helm transports the occupant of the driver’s seat to new heights. Experience the feel of weightlessness with uncompromised panoramic views while helming. Practicality is integral to every Sunseeker. Innovative pantograph doors on the port and starboard side offer protection from the elements, allowing the driver to focus on the horizon ahead. The foredeck is ready to host sunbathers and sundowners with day-to-night usability. A spacious large sun pad slides forward to reveal a table for even more seating, delivering versatility and flexible use of the space.

Best Layout – Ocean 182

The Ocean 182 epitomises the floating penthouse concept. Those who step on board are immediately met with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors on the starboard side and matching windows on the port side to provide uninterrupted views from bow to stern, connecting guests to the marine environment while enjoying the comforts of the interior. The main deck is a dedicated space for socialising and entertaining, offering 671 square feet of living space with a stunning collection of contemporary loose furniture to fill the space. There is flexibility to choose freestanding furniture that suits the owner’s requirements, from large U-shaped sofas to comfortable lounge seating.

The unique spiral staircase with minimalist stair treads contributes to an unimpeded view from the inside. Forward of the staircase resides the semi-open galley with a pantograph door to the port side deck. Comprehensively equipped with Miele appliances and an option to include additional refrigeration and a 34-bottle wine cooler, the galley offers incredible space and storage. On the starboard side, a generous dining table for eight guests and a bar forward becomes an ideal space for serviced or informal dining.

The fluidity between outdoor and indoor living spaces is unmatched in this yacht class. With retractable sliding doors, the upper deck can fully close to create a third indoor living space or left open to form an al-fresco balcony, offering the owner ultimate flexibility. The sole helm console on this yacht, situated on the upper deck, has not been seen on a Sunseeker before. Next to the helm, an L-shaped bar is conveniently located for service with crew or for owner use. The bar is well-equipped with refrigeration, ice maker and wash basin for convenience, servicing the indoor and outdoor upper deck spaces. Further aft, on the starboard side, there is an extension of the saloon with U-shaped seating and a fixed TV unit with storage on the port side. Beyond the upper saloon lies an outside space on the upper deck with loose lounge seating and expansive panoramic glazing offering far reaching views out to the horizon.

Below deck, the light and elegant accommodation comprises three well-appointed double cabins and a twin, all with en suite in a standard configuration. The full-beam owner’s cabin positioned amidships is an indulgent escape for the owner, whilst the forward VIP provides an equally luxurious experience for guests.

Offering a contemporary yet timeless interior, the Ocean 182 benefits from a highly customisable interior to suit the owner’s style and taste. The interior, curated in collaboration with Design Unlimited, is characterised by soft neutral tones and a sumptuous blend of textured materials. Every inch of this yacht is finished to an immaculate standard, showcasing recessed ambient mood lighting, stainless steel trim detailing, and specially designed feature bulkheads.

By Editorial Team   20 November 2013

At the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show, the iconic Perini Navi sailing yacht ‘Maltese Falcon’ was awarded the very first Baccarat SuperYacht World Trophy after topping the magazine's poll for the ‘Finest Superyacht Ever’.

Built in 2006, the 88m/289’ ‘Maltese Falcon’ boasts the title of the world’s largest and most advanced sailing yacht and is equipped with the latest technologies throughout as well as the revolutionary DynaRig. Although accustomed to receiving a variety of industry accolades, this latest addition to her trophy cabinet certainly represents one of the most important due to it being chosen by superyacht owners and industry experts from around the globe.

Appearing in the July/August issue of SuperYacht World, the magazine compiled a comprehensive ‘Top 50 Finest Superyachts’ list from their readers in order to find out which luxury yachts ranked amongst the top 10. The prestigious Monaco Yacht Show 2013 provided the perfect setting for editor Paul Ashton to present the Baccarat Trophy to ‘Maltese Falcon’s’ Owner the Elena Ambrosiadou in front of a gathering of some of the yachting industry’s biggest players.

On presenting the award, Ashton commented:  “It gives me immense pleasure to give this award to such an iconic yacht that has captured the imagination of so many superyacht owners and designers since her launch in 2006.”

Sophie Cotelle, Lighting and Furniture Business Unit Vice-President, said: “Baccarat is very proud to have partnered with the SuperYacht World magazine to create this trophy. This collaboration demonstrates both the innovation in the ever-creative yachting industry and in the excellence of the Baccarat’s craftsmanship.”

The designer of the Maltese Falcon yacht, Ken Freivokh, was also there in Monaco and was very pleased with the new award.

World Yacht Trophy 2013 for 60m CRN mega yacht J’ADE

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

The prestigious Italian builder CRN , part of the Ferretti Group , specialising in the building and marketing of fully-customized displacement mega yachts, made of steel and aluminium, varying in size from 40 to 90 metres, is proud to announce that its 60-metre mega yacht J’Ade has been honoured with the “ World Yacht Trophy 2013”. This is an initiative organised by the French editorial group Luxmedia Group to recognize the best yachts displayed by the most important shipyards from all over the world, in the “Over 50 meter – Most Innovative Trophy” category. The ceremony took place in Cannes last Saturday, during the 2013 Cannes International Boat Show .

From left: Luca Boldrini (CRN sales manager), Lamberto Tacoli (CRN Chairman & CEO), Giovanni Zuccon (Studio Zuccon International Project)

“This prestigious prize” – declares Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN – “ is to be shared with the Owner, who believed in this ambuitious project, with the designers of Studio Zuccon International Project and, above all, with all the CRN employees, who built it with great skill and professionalism”.

The experts of the international jury recognized the innovative contents of J’Ade yacht and above all her garage, which for the first time onboard a CRN megayacht, is floodable and allows the tender (a 27foot Riva Iseo) to enter inside without using a crane.

The side hatch of the garage is operated hydraulically and the internal basin fills with water to allow the tender to go in and out easily: the border of the basin has protections to avoid damage and it also has underwater lights to create a dramatic effect in what, without a tender, becomes a pleasant on-board swimming pool. The tender bay requires very little time to empty, in fact the 18,000 litres of water which it can hold can be emptied in just three minutes. The project was studied and designed such as to create a combined area with the beach club, forming a single open lounge area, a very elegant and refined space with close contact to the sea. An integrated beach club which can be enjoyed by the Owner’s family and friends who can quickly make use of a tender to have a swim closer to the beach.

Superyacht J’ade will be presented for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Show , which opens in Monaco on Wednesday 25th September.

CRN J’ade Hull number 125 of the Shipyard, luxury yacht J’ade , made of steel and aluminium, has an overall length of 60 metres and a 10.20 metre beam. The megayacht has four decks and a sub lower deck, which comfortably accommodates 10 guests – in four cabins and the Owner’s suite – and 13 crew members. The megayacht, which has a sharp and streamlined external profile, has a strong and distinguishing identity, thanks to the special full length windows from which a panoramic view can be enjoyed from the upper saloon. Also in the Owner’s suite, it is possible to stay in contact with the sea from the balcony, an outdoor space which can also be enjoyed while sailing and which has become a CRN Owner’s must-have.

The latest innovation of the Shipyard, designed for this beautiful vessel, is the beach club, where the stern hatch transforms into a large beach by the sea integrated with an innovativetender bay. The internal layout was designed by Studio Zuccon International Project in collaboration with the CRN Engineering, while Studio Zuccon worked together with the CRN interior design office, in close collaboration with the Owner.

Making top headlines in 2024 is the Esports World Cup trophy designed by Thomas Lyte. Standing at 60cm tall, and handcrafted from 9kg of sterling silver bullion with 24-carat gold plate, the trophy is a beacon of prestige, and represents the highest honour for the world’s best esports organisations.

A British luxury goods and trophy manufacturer known for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs, this is not their first rodeo in the competition world. Crafting trophies for major sports leagues, corporate awards, and charitable organizations, Thomas Lyte have extended their expertise to create bespoke trophies that capture the essence of competitive gaming.

In an exclusive interview with ONE Esports, the design team at Thomas Lyte that was involved in the creation of the Esports World Cup trophy from start to finish shares more about the significance behind one of the most unique esports trophies ever made.

How the Esports World Cup trophy was designed — Thomas Lyte gives a closer look

Thomas Lyte believes that symbols of achievement are universal in design, whether in sports or in esports. To the company, esports is unique due to it’s limitless imagination and the deep lore that surrounds the game in question.

“We’ve had some highly creative briefs across so many games titles and genres. The ambition of esports organisations to connect with their fans is unmatched, and the projects are some of the most challenging,” the design team said. “However, we’re always so interested to see the fan reactions in real time online when an esports trophy is revealed.”

League of Legends, Summoner's Cup, Worlds 2019

Over the years, esports trophies have evolved to reflect the unique culture and intensity of individual titles, capturing the high-stakes spectacle in a one of a kind laurel. Thomas Lyte had handcrafted the LEC trophy , FIFAe World Cup trophy , eChampions League trophy , and the most iconic Summoner’s Cup for the League of Legends World Championship that debuted in season two.

This makes designing the Esports World Cup trophy a little different because it crowns the best esports club in the world across different titles as the tournament saw more than 20 video games played accompanied by massive prize pools.

“We knew that the Esports World Cup will include many of the biggest gaming titles across multiple genres, so we did not want to lean on any genre too heavily,” the Thomas Lyte design team told ONE Esports. “We wanted to produce a design inspired by the landscapes of Saudi Arabia, the host country, that carried symbols of esports culture and the spirit of competition.”

Esports World Cup trophy triangle detailing on the body

The team originally came up with 10 concept ideas that were “quite varied in shape and in inspiration.” Oftentimes, the first designs are unrecognisable to the final design as they work with the tournament organizer’s creative teams and leadership to ensure that they match their ambitions for the tournament.

The most noticeable highlighting feature of the Esports World Cup trophy is its body that’s constructed with interweaving triangles. Inspired by game controller buttons that “have become such an important part of the esports athlete’s experience across the Esports World Cup,” the Thomas Lyte design team also wanted the stem to resemble the trunk of a palm tree, a well-known symbol of Saudi Arabia.

The second most disinctive feature is the crown atop a globe, which “symbolises champions as the Kings of Esports,” while the handles were fashioned to resemble compacted computer wiring.

Esports World Cup trophy crown on top of the trophy

“Casting metal is often overlooked as a skill in silversmithing. It is a skill that has been practiced for thousands of years, which is why casting such a complex shape for such a large trophy required all of our team’s expertise to produce something beautiful,” the Thomas Lyte design team shared.

“For this striking Esports World Cup trophy, our crafting team in London had cast the stem from a 3D printed model, which allowed us to tweak and prototype until we had perfected the process,” they added.

The amount of expertise, creativity, and craftsmanship that went into this large trophy was tremendous, and the team is especially proud of the interweaving triangles on the body because “it really highlights the way that the design of a tournaments trophy can inspire the branding across the tournament.”

Team Falcons winning the Call of Duty Warzone championship at Esports World Cup 2024

After all, it’s these same triangles that inspired the triangular “keys” that have become such an important part of the esports athlete’s experience across the Esports World Cup where a distinct triangular key was crafted for each team. The winning team selects three keys from the teams they have defeated, gets them crushed, then mounts them under the honor board.

“It really highlights the way that the design of a tournaments trophy can inspire the branding across the tournament, something which we are always so proud to see,” said the Thomas Lyte design team.

Team Falcons, who won Call of Duty Warzone and Free Fire, and participated in other titles, accumulated the most Club Championship points, have been officially crowned the inaugural winners of the Esports World Cup.

Dylan Fletcher

INEOS Britannia, the Challenger of Record racing for the Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd in the 37th America’s Cup, announced its race crew that will challenge to create history by becoming the first British team to win sport’s oldest international trophy.

Joining Sir Ben Ainslie as co-helm aboard its AC75 Britannia for the America’s Cup will be Olympic gold medalist Dylan Fletcher MBE, who won the 49er class at Tokyo 2020 and is also the reigning Moth World Champion. The two trimmers will be Leigh McMillan and Bleddyn Mon, who are both on their third America’s Cup campaign with the British Team. The four Cyclors on-board will come from a pool of nine athletes, who will rotate on and off the boat between races to ensure optimum performance.

The on-board crew will be bolstered by a stellar line-up of support crew, including double Olympic gold medalist Giles Scott MBE as Head of Sailing [and previously expected to be the starting helmsman], Olympic gold and silver medalist Iain Jensen as Trimmer Support, Emirates GBR SailGP Team Coach Rob Wilson, gold and silver Olympic medalist Xabi Fernandez and seven-time World Match Racing Champion Ian Williams as Coaches, as well as Pete Cunningham as Head of Human Performance.

“The process of developing the sailing squad and defining what that race line-up looks like has taken some time,” Ainslie said. “We have 15 sailors in our squad but eight sailors on the yacht at one time, so clearly we are going to have rotations. We have a bunch of really talented sailors, so in a way we are spoilt for choice. It’s a very difficult decision to define who you’re going to select in these roles, particularly when you have two such talented sailors in Dylan and Giles. It’s obviously going to be tough for the one that misses out but that said Giles has the key role of Head of Sailing in this campaign and is pivotal to the team’s progression.”

INEOS Britannia’s Cyclor crew includes returning America’s Cup athletes: Freddie Carr, Ben Cornish, Matt Gotrel MBE, Neil Hunter and Luke Parkinson. The further four Cyclors are America’s Cup rookies, with some never having sailed before joining INEOS Britannia. They include Olympic silver medallist Harry Leask, Matt Rossiter and Ryan Todhunter, who have all moved over from the world of rowing and were selected for their power potential. The 2019 Finn National Champion James Skulczuk completes the Cyclor line-up, having moved his attention to cycling to stay fit while the Covid-19 pandemic halted his sailing career.

Sicily Yacht Sinking: 4 Bodies Recovered From the Wreckage By Divers

Two days after a superyacht was sunk by a storm off the coast of sicily, four bodies have been recovered from the wreckage. .

There’s been a heartbreaking update in the Sicily yacht tragedy.

After a superyacht sank off the coast of Palermo, Italy, during a violent storm Aug. 19, divers have discovered four bodies among the ship’s wreckage, a source familiar with the rescue operations told NBC News .

The identities of the recovered bodies have not yet been determined, but the discovery comes shortly after the names of the six missing passengers were shared .

British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife have yet to be accounted for, the Director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency Salvatore Cocina told NBC News.

Per the outlet, Morvillo and Bloomer’s employers later identified their missing wives as Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo .

It is believed the passengers were located in the ship’s hull, which remains over 150 feet underwater. Divers continue to search among the wreckage, but the depth, along with other obstructions and narrow passageways have made it an ordeal.

While the aforementioned six people remain unaccounted for, Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares , the ship’s cook Ricardo Thomas as well as nine other crew members and two other passengers were recovered from the shipwreck . Eight of those rescued were brought to a hospital, while the rest were brought to a nearby hotel. Despite being rescued, Thomas later died, NBC News reported.

Among the other extricated passengers, Charlotte Golunski Emsley recounted her and husband James Emsley ’s saga of survival, along with their 12-month-old Sophie after they were woken up by the storm—which could have included a waterborne tornado known as a waterspout, meteorologists told NBC News.

Golunski described the family’s search for a lifeboat, which later safely stowed themselves and 11 other passengers, as “the end of the world.”

“It was all dark,” she recalled to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica , per the BBC . “In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

UK's vessel Bayesian

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters, near Palermo

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Yacht that sank off Sicily was carrying people celebrating tech magnate's acquittal; 6 missing

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello, southern Italy.

Police divers resumed searching Tuesday for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in deep seas off Sicily, including a British tech magnate who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who had defended him at trial.

The resting place of their sailboat is some 50 meters (164 feet) underwater off Porticello — a depth that required special precautions that complicated the work: Recovery crews said they were working in 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed down their efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, was moored about a half-mile offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the majestic, illuminated 246-foot mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappearing over the course of a minute.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body has been recovered, identified by officials as the Antiguan-born on-board chef. The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

“It's a great, great tragedy,” said Britain's ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn, who visited Porticello on Tuesday. Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship and British citizens were among the missing.

Fire rescue officials have said the six other passengers will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage. They include the tycoon Mike Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology and was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

Also unaccounted for are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s lawyers, and Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch’s defense.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the 15 survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, said he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

“A moment later, she was gone,” he said. “They said they went flat on the water and were sunk in two minutes," Borner added, quoting the survivors.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialized cave divers, worked Tuesday to open up access points to get inside the wreck, which lies at a depth far beyond what most recreational divers are certified to reach. They were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search.

The divers have not yet been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven't verified their presence there through portholes.

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany's coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space divers have to maneuver.

“That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight," he said.

The outing was intended at least in part as a celebration of Lynch's acquittal and a “looking forward to what was coming next,” said Reid Weingarten, a Washington attorney and a member of Lynch’s defense team who was not on the yacht.

“A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then of course this happened,” Weingarten said.

Some of the people who stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal were on board, including Morvillo, the lawyer, who Weingarten worked with and said “was like a brother.”

Morvillo's wife, Neda, is also missing, according to his law firm Clifford Chance.

Aki Hussain, CEO of international insurer Hiscox Group, where Bloomer, the witness, was chairman, said the company was "deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event."

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” he added.

Charlotte Golunski, who survived the disaster, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, as did Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares. Hannah Lynch, reportedly the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, is among the missing.

The yacht’s registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., according to online maritime database Equasis. Bacares is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

Its name, Bayesian, may be a reference to “Bayesian Inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Lynch’s company.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it had been available for charter for about $215,000 a week and was notable for its massive 246-foot-tall aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The coast guard said to date there was no trace of fuel leaks from the wreckage.

In an unrelated event, Lynch's co-defendant in the Autonomy trial who was also cleared, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, said Chamberlain's lawyer, Gary Lincenberg.

We're pausing our coverage for tonight but here is a recap of what we know:

  • Five bodies have been found in the wreckage of the sunken Bayesian;
  • Four of the bodies have been retrieved and recovered to shore. Efforts to recover the fifth will resume tomorrow;
  • One person is still unaccounted for;
  • Divers employed the use of an upgraded remote-controlled underwater vehicle to help with the search;
  • Emergency service staff and others involved in the search and rescue operations formed a "guard of honour" as bodies were brought ashore;
  • The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) confirmed it is investigating the sinking;
  • The Bayesian's captain, James Cutfield, was questioned for more than two hours by Italian prosecutors;
  • An investigation might result in changes to how masts are constructed, according to a professor of transport law;
  • Two crew members who survived the disaster reportedly said it is a "miracle" they are still alive;
  • Another crew member who survived the disaster was confirmed as Dutch national Tjis Koopmans.

It's been a busy day for search and rescue teams as they continued their quest to find people unaccounted for from the Bayesian's sinking.

Divers found five bodies, leaving just one person still unaccounted for when the search resumes tomorrow.

Below, we have a look at some images of the day as it unfolded:

Karsten Borner, the captain of a boat that came to the Bayesian's aide, has described the moment he came across the life raft containing survivors.

The 69-year-old told Sky News he had been busy trying to secure his own vessel when the violent storm hit when he noticed the Bayesian had disappeared behind him.

"We saw a flickering light and it turned out to be the life raft, a 12-person life raft with 15 people inside including one baby," he said.

The people "stepped on" to his vessel, where he "took care of them".

He added: "We gave them dry clothes, towels, blankets, tea and coffee and so on.

"I was busy talking to the coastguard to get them an ambulance and to send a message to search and rescue."

Those involved in the search and rescue operation looking for bodies should receive mental health support, an expert has told Sky News.

Divers have been working tirelessly since Monday morning to find the passengers unaccounted for following the sinking of the Bayesian.

Since then, six bodies have been found, with one person still missing.

"There's been a lot of focus on the physical risks involved with diving for the vessel," says Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

"We've talked about debris and we've talked about the complex layout, but the lasting impacts on everybody involved is going to be on the mental health and we hope that the support is going to be there.

"And I'm sure it will be for the emergency responders and also for the people who have survived and what is obviously been a very, very traumatic experience."

Searches have finished for the day and will resume tomorrow, the head of Sicily's civil protection agency has told the PA news agency.

Salvatore Cocina confirmed earlier that five bodies have been found today, but only four recovered.

One person remains missing.

A shipbuilding expert has said the Bayesian superyacht which sunk on Monday is among the "safest" available.

Giovanni Costantino is the chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which now owns the firm that previously built the yacht.

He told Sky News this week's disaster off the coast of Sicily has put him "in a state of sadness on the one hand and of disbelief on the other".

He said: "Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats] I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built."

"The sailing ships, it is well known, are the safest in the most absolute sense," Mr Constantino added.

"First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing the wind. Second, with the structure, the drift keel... they become unsinkable bodies."

The Bayesian sunk in the early hours of Monday morning off Palermo following a violent storm.

Investigators looking into the sinking of the Bayesian must work through evidence "methodically and meticulously", says the managing director of a maritime consulting group.

The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has already confirmed it is investigating the incident.

James Wilkes, a maritime investigator, told Sky News the investigation into the deaths of passengers will take time.

"The key thing for the investigators is to work methodically and meticulously through the evidence that they are able to get and make sure they're not missing something or not over interpreting something," he said.

Five bodies have been found today, bringing the number of confirmed deaths to six.

"They'll want to expedite it because if bodies are being recovered of British nationals, then it is very likely that an inquest will be opened into their deaths in the UK," added Mr Wilkes.

"There is no benefit to anybody rushing it. We need to arrive at the right conclusions with as little supposition and ambiguity as possible so that we actually make yachts safer in the future and actually understand what happened in detail."

Search and rescue teams have been working hard since Monday morning to find those unaccounted after the sinking of the Bayesian.

Specialists divers and experts have been called in, with coastguard helicopters and underwater remotely operated vehicles deployed to help.

Sky News correspondent Laura Bundock has been taking a closer look at the how the recovery operation unfolded...

A fifth body has been found today in the search for survivors of the sunken superyacht

The head of Sicily's civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina said four bodies have been recovered and that efforts to bring a fifth to shore are "ongoing".

It brings the number of confirmed deaths to six, after the body of the yacht's on-board chef was recovered shortly after the incident on Monday.

By  Ashna Hurynag , news correspondent

The crowd on the harbourside has been growing since lunchtime.

News that cave divers from Naples and Rome had joined the search came with more attention and interest.

The search had entered its third day, and conservations were turning to fear about a lack of oxygen for those on board the sunken yacht.

Radios were heard crackling across the water where a makeshift temporary search and rescue "centre" has been constructed.

The white coastguard vessel and the search and rescue cream and red boat were coming in from the search site.

As they docked, two divers dressed in orange wetsuits on the back of the boat lifted the first body bag.

The sight causing the crowd opposite to fall silent. The poignancy of the sombre moment bringing some watching on to tears.

Some looked away, whilst others filmed on their phones.

The moment many had feared was unfolding before their eyes as the rescue mission only minutes ago quickly turned to recovery.

The crowd watched on as another body was brought ashore too.

A spontaneous guard of honour seemed to form as each body was brought to the harbourside - police officers, firefighters and search and rescue officials side by side, some with bowed heads - a moment of silence and respect.

After hours of searching, this operation is coming to a close.

Twin of missing banker jonathan bloomer hopeful ‘air pockets’ are keeping bayesian yacht passengers alive.

The twin brother of the Morgan Stanley chairman missing after the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Italy said there may be air pockets in the sunken vessel keeping those yet to be found alive.

Morgan Stanley Bank International chair Jonathan Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, said their family is anxiously awaiting news on his sibling’s condition after the banker and his wife, Judy, went missing when the superyacht capsized and sank during a violent storm Monday.

“They’re still going down to the wreck, they can’t get through at the moment because of the debris in the way,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC.

“It’s a slow process, and it will take time. There might be air pockets but we don’t know,” he added.

Jeremy said the only news the family had received was confirmation that his brother was on the yacht, but that the family is doing the best they can to support each other.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed,” he said.

In addition to the Bloomers, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, top New York City  lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda, a jewelry designer, are also still missing.

One person, the ship’s on-board chef, was killed when the yacht capsized off the coast of Sicily early Monday.

Captain James Catfield, who piloted the 184-foot, British-flagged ship, was among the 15 crew members and passengers to survive.

While authorities have said the chances of passengers surviving the disaster were very small, they did not rule out the possibility.
