Hallmark Channel’s Christmas Sail: Synopsis, cast, how to watch
By sarabeth pollock | oct 31, 2021.
The 2021 Countdown to Christmas celebration on the Hallmark Channel continues with a brand-new original movie, Christmas Sail , starring Katee Sackhoff, Patrick Sabongui and Terry O’Quinn.
Christmas Sail synopsis
Liz (Sackhoff) is a single mom who hasn’t been home for Christmas in years, not since her mother died. She has an estranged relationship with her father, Dennis (O’Quinn), but when she learns that he was hurt in an accident she goes home to Portside.
It has been a long time since she’s been home, and oddly enough not much has changed except for her best friend Luke (Sabongui), who has grown up a lot. Luke is dealing with some problems of his own, and when the town’s annual Christmas Eve Sailboat Parade of Lights rolls around Liz thinks it might be the perfect solution.
Christmas Sail cast
Katee Sackhoff has been in numerous TV shows and movies, and she’s best known for her role as Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica . She’s also appeared in The Mandalorian, 24, Halloween: Resurrection, Longmire and The Flash , and she also lent her voice to Star Wars: The Clone Wars . This is her first Hallmark Channel movie.
Patrick Sabongui recently starred in Firefly Lane on Netflix and is currently shooting the final season of Shameless . He also appeared on The CW’s The Flash , Homeland and The Good Doctor , and some of his movie appearances include Zack Snyder’s 300 and Watchmen .
Terry O’Quinn has been a familiar face around television for years. Perhaps known best for his role on ABC’s Lost , he recently appeared in Amazon’s Patriot and FBI: Most Wanted , and soon he’ll star in Netflix’s Pieces of Her with Toni Collette.
Christmas Sail was directed by Stacey N. Harding from a script by Robin Gadsby.

Hallmark’s ‘Christmas Sail’ Stars Katee Sackhoff, Patrick Sabongui, Terry O’Quinn
Hallmark’s Countdown To Christmas movies doesn’t always have to include snow. What if it includes sailboats with festive holiday lights and decorations? This is Hallmark’s Christmas Sail.
This movie stars a lot of familiar faces. They include Katee Sackhoff ( Battlestar Galactica , The Mandalorian ), Patrick Sabongui ( Firefly Lane , The Flash ), Terry O’Quinn ( Lost , Hawaii Five-O ), and Emma Oliver ( Snowpiercer , For The Love Of Chocolate ).
What Is Hallmark’s Christmas Sail About?
Ready to learn more about Hallmark’s Christmas Sail ? According to the official synopsis , single mom Liz Darling (Sackhoff) returns to her hometown of Portside. This is her first hometown Christmas in years.
Liz is returning home because her estranged father, Dennis (O’Quinn) has been injured in a minor accident. Not much has changed except for Luke (Sabongui), her childhood best friend, who’s not the boy she remembers.
While this might not have been the holiday she’d imagined, Liz sees this as an opportunity to show her daughter Hannah (Oliver) the kind of magical Christmas she’d once shared with her mother.
One of their favorite traditions was participating in the town’s annual Christmas Eve Sailboat Parade of Lights. However, after her mother passed away, the family boat was docked for good, along with her father’s Christmas spirit.
When Liz discovers he may lose their family home, she comes up with a plan: enlist Luke’s help to fix up the boat and create a floating light display spectacular enough to win the parade’s $25,000 grand prize.
Unbeknownst to her, Luke has a plan of his own that may finally win her heart.
When Can You Watch Hallmark’s Christmas Sail ?
Christmas Sail premieres on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, October 31, at 8 p.m. Eastern. There is now one encore showing. That is on Friday, November 5, at 6 p.m. Eastern. Check the schedule for future showings.
Katee Sackhoff Is New Bride!
Katee Sackhoff just got married in early October. The new Hallmark star shared on Instagram , a photo of her dress hanging, a huge corked bottle, and some strappy, silver sandals. She wrote, “Tell me you had an amazing wedding without telling me you had an amazing wedding 🥰 #MrsGadsby @robin_gadsby That 17 yr old magnum bottle of Insignia was my father’s contribution ❤️.”
Sackhoff married Robin Gadsby. According to an interview she made on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Robin worked on the production team of her Netflix series Another Life .
As for her character, Elizabeth, in Christmas Sail , Katee Sackhoff explained that this is the character that is closest to herself. But, she also explained that all of her characters have the same basic thread running through them. “They are strong, independent women that are complicated.”
Surprisingly, she believes that they are “all the same, but with a different backdrop.” She thinks being in a Hallmark movie is no different from playing Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian . She laughed as she explained, “You’re either fighting the Empire or finding Christmas Spirit.”
Be sure to catch the premiere of Christmas Sail on Sunday, October 31, at 8 p.m. Eastern, on the Hallmark Channel.

Hallmark’s Christmas Sail takes all the cozy holiday traditions that these movies usually pair with small towns in Middle America and relocates them to the Pacific Northwest. Katee Sackhoff tries to get her mom’s old boat in shipshape in time for a holly jolly boat parade. Will she reconnect with her estranged father, played by Terry O’Quinn? And will she find the time to find love along the way? You know she will—but will it be worth watching?
CHRISTMAS SAIL : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
The Gist: Katee Sackhoff plays Liz Darling, a luxury hotel manager in Seattle who also has Hallmark’s favorite surname . Since a fire destroyed her home (an incident we thankfully only hear about because a home fire is too scary for a Hallmark Christmas movie!), Liz plans on spending the holidays at her hotel with her daughter Hannah (Emma Oliver). Then her dad ( Terry O’Quinn ) breaks his arm saving a teeny child from a falling Christmas tree—which actually looks like it was shoved over, which begs a question that goes unanswered: who is Portside’s terrible tree toppler ? Anyway—with her dad injured, Liz and Hannah decide to spend Christmas with grandpa, even if Liz has been estranged from her father since her mom passed away a few years prior.
While she’s in town, she reconnects with Luke (Patrick Sabongui), her BFF growing up who also helped her family out with boat… stuff? Boat duties? Boat maintenance and excursions. Luke’s affable, low-key hunky, and has become buds with her dad. Is he one-true-love material? That’s something Liz has gotta figure out! She also has to figure out how to save the bank from taking away her dad’s home at Christmas—and she can think of no better way to do that than to win the grand prize at the annual holiday boat parade.
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: I’m gonna say this with every one of these movies, but, every other Hallmark movie! We’ve got Hallmark’s favorite stakes (foreclosure!), favorite will-they/won’t-they dynamic (childhood besties turned adulthood hotties), and favorite plot device (an annual contest). Still, Christmas Sail has its own Pacific Northwest flair to it. This movie feels cold, crisp, and a little damp—but, uh, in a cozy, seasonal way.
Performance Worth Watching: Give it up for Patrick Sabongui! I really enjoyed seeing a romantic lead who—and I write this with general affection for all the men who step into these roles!—doesn’t look like a store brand Chris Evans. You don’t have to have perfectly gelled hair to be an expert at the art of wooing! Sabongui’s Luke is chill, funny, and an all around catch. Give him a Hallmark movie every year.
Memorable Dialogue: “You’ll come around, Luke Fletcher. It’s only a matter of time before you get on board with my plan.” “You know I hate nautical puns.” “You ‘shore’ about that?”
A Holiday Tradition: There’s the annual Christmas boat parade, which is part of Portside’s Annual Festival of Lights. There’s also the annual Winter Ball—seriously, if you’re looking for a Hallmark drinking game, take a drink every time someone in one of these movies says the word “annual.” There’s also a rather unusual new tradition wherein some local Portside actors pose as elves (sorry to ruin the illusion, movie!) and recruit children to help save Christmas by collecting nonperishable food items. It also gives us the gift of Terry O’Quinn in an elf hat.
Does the Title Make Any Sense?: Is there a sail that is flown at Christmas? Yes, yes there is. But for a movie that makes nautical puns a running gag, there are surely better titles for this movie. Like, Jingle Sails is right there! Or Hark How the Sails ! Carol of the Sails ! Wait—I’m now realizing… is the title a pun on Christmas sale? Come on, the assignment was nautical puns!
Our Take: As with all Hallmark Christmas movies, you don’t tune in for originality. To be fair, Christmas Sail has some unique stuff going on since I can’t recall the last time a Hallmark movie had so many scenes on a boat or ended with a boat parade. But the script itself is nothing much to get excited about. There’s a lot of exposition, especially in the first scene when the film sets up Liz, her job, her love of Christmas, her house fire, her daughter, and her family tension. Christmas Sail is just one of those holiday movies where every character greets each other by recalling the last time they interacted. And as I went through above, the plot is the standard issue “gotta win a contest so we can keep from losing a building that is important to our family” one.
But—and this but is as big as a barge—it all works because how in the world did they get Katee Sackhoff and Terry O’Quinn together onscreen ? In a Hallmark movie? About a boat parade ?! These are the two biggest stars from two of the first pop culture-defining TV shows of the 21st century. If you spent the ’00s watching Lost and Battlestar Galactica —I don’t care if you’re a Grinch 365 days a year, make the time to watch this movie just to see Starbuck ask John Locke why he stopped loving Christmas after mom died.
As I know I will write a dozen more times this year, the success of a Hallmark movie lies with the performances. Sackhoff and O’Quinn are absolutely fantastic together, bringing real emotional depth and a whole lot of unspoken backstory to every scene (which is saying something because this movie loves backstories). When O’Quinn and Sackhoff look at a Christmas tree, lights twinkling in their incredibly emotive eyes, I feel the Christmas spirit.
Our Call: STREAM IT if you love Christmas, or if you just want to feel like it’s 2004 again.

‘Christmas Sail’ Hallmark Movie Premiere: Cast, Trailer, Synopsis
Hallmark Channel’s merry holiday season continues with the newest “Countdown to Christmas” holiday premiere, “Christmas Sail.” The film, starring Katee Sackhoff and Patrick Sabongui, premieres Sunday night.
The film will be a treat for Hallmark fans who aren’t familiar with Sackhoff, who is making her debut on Hallmark in this film. Previous roles include Niko Breckenridge on “Another Life,” Bo-Katan on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and Victoria Moretti on “Longmire.”
Sabongui, who also starred as David Singh on “The Flash” and Chad Wiley on “Firefly Lane,” is someone Hallmark fans may recognize, as previous roles for the network included “Love on the Sidelines,” “All of My Heart: Inn Love” and “All of My Heart: The Wedding.”
Terry O’Quinn (“Lost”) also stars.
So what will happen in this film? Let’s find out.
“When single mom Liz Darling (Sackhoff) finds out her estranged father, Dennis (O’Quinn) has been injured in a minor accident, she returns to her hometown of Portside for her first Christmas in years,” a synopsis reads. “Not much has changed except for Luke (Sabongui), her childhood best friend, who’s definitely not the same boy she remembers.”
As Liz sets out to take her unexpected trip home and share the magical Christmas celebrations of her past with her own daughter, she is also confronted with reminders of the past and the town’s Christmas Eve Sailboat Parade of Lights that her family stopped participating in after her mother died. However, when she learns of a new tragedy that could be facing her father, Liz decides to bring the tradition back into their family’s lives.
“When Liz discovers he may lose their family home, she comes up with a plan: enlist Luke’s help to fix up the boat and create a floating light display spectacular enough to win the parade’s $25,000 grand prize,” the synopsis reads. “Unbeknownst to her, Luke has a plan of his own that may finally win her heart.”
“Christmas Sail” airs Sunday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. EDT on Hallmark Channel.

‘Christmas Sail’: Katee Sackhoff on Joining the Hallmark Family With a Missed Opportunity Story
You may know Katee Sackhoff because of her trips through space on both Battlestar Galactica and Another Life , but she’s recently taken on a more down-to-earth role: a member of the Hallmark family. Sackhoff makes her debut in one of Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” films, and what makes this one “pretty special,” she notes, is that Christmas Sail was written by her husband, Robin Gadsby. (Both also serve as executive producers.)
Sackhoff stars as single mother Liz who returns home to help after her estranged father, Dennis ( Lost ‘s Terry O’Quinn ), is injured. There, she reconnects with her childhood best friend, Luke ( The Flash ‘s Patrick Sabongui).
“I don’t remember a Christmas in my life without Hallmark Christmas movies. I absolutely adore them, and it’s just been a matter of finding the right one — and in this case, creating the right one,” Sackhoff tells TV Insider. “My husband and I went in and we pitched the stories together and we’re hoping that this is the start of a very long and beautiful relationship with Hallmark because it was such a wonderful experience and it is such a family atmosphere over there. And he’s more than happy to keep writing [movies].”
The star tells us more.
Introduce Liz. How’s her life going when we meet her?
Katee Sackhoff: Liz’s life is going great. She absolutely loves her life. She’s living in the city, she has a great job, she’s got a wonderful daughter and a good group of friends and she is truly happy. I don’t think that she would tell you that anything is missing from her life. She’s experienced loss in her life, of course. But she’s definitely not looking for anything.
Talk about her and her father’s relationship and how her being back for the holidays might fix things.
It’s interesting. I don’t think that Liz would have gone back home had her father not needed help. And so she finds herself back in the place where she has incredibly fond memories of childhood and spending time with her family and her mom and her dad. I think that sometimes you have to go home in order to right the ship, so to speak. Liz and her father’s relationship has been estranged because they both chose to mourn the loss of her mother in a very different way and individually. They couldn’t hold space for the other one at the time. The fact that she’s going home for Christmas gives her the opportunity to open her heart and speak her mind, which I think is required for the relationship.
Kailey Schwerman/Crown Media
Speaking of her heart, there is, of course, a romance, with Liz reuniting with her best friend. What was the relationship like before? And what’s it like now?
The relationship before was very close. It’s very much a missed opportunity story. She and Luke were inseparable when they were children. They went away to college together and because of Luke’s own loss in his life, he ended up going home after his freshman year of school and didn’t go back. There may or may not be a misunderstanding there, which caused them to drift apart, and they may find their way back to each other at Christmas time. At its heart, this story about Liz and Dennis and Luke is truly just a story about missed opportunities and things left unsaid. That’s a very important lesson in this very heartwarming story: We need to make sure the people that we love know we love them.
And Liz is fixing up the family’s boat for the town’s annual Christmas Eve Sailboat Parade of Lights.
Part of the reason why Liz takes on the project of the boat is twofold. She wants to give her daughter Hannah [Emma Oliver] a phenomenal Christmas. Christmas is important to Liz, and she really wants to make sure that Hannah has a special Christmas, and what better way than to experience the thing that Liz has such fond memories of from her own childhood at Christmastime? But I also think another reason she takes on the boat is a distraction. She’s not very comfortable being around her dad. A lot of time has passed and they’re not really connecting anymore. It’s easier potentially for Liz to just continue to do what she’s been doing over the years, which is just ignore the problem.
Hallmark Channel's 'Countdown to Christmas' 2021 Movies: What You Need to Know (PHOTOS)
Especially since her dad and Luke are getting along. They’re closer than she may be to her dad.
Yes, absolutely. I spoke about Luke’s loss as a child. His own father passed away when he was in school, and he ended up coming home to take care of his family. I think that Dennis became a surrogate father for him during that time, and he might be looking out for Dennis a little bit as well. But they’ve definitely formed a friendship which may or may not make Liz a little uncomfortable.
