Yacht Fashion Is The Classic, Preppy Look Taking Quiet Luxury To The Next Level

Friends on a yacht

There's absolutely no doubt that Princess Diana was the ultimate fashion icon of the 20th century. From her iconic little black dress — the original revenge dress — to her upscale gowns and spectacular wedding dress, the beloved late royal is still a style role model for fashion novices and avid trendsetters alike. When not attending official events and donning glamorous outfits, Princess Diana looked especially stunning in breezy yacht fashion, from swim sets with matching sarongs and casual polo shirts to seersucker button-down overlays and a captain's hat.

Effortlessly preppy and elegant yacht style, indeed, pulls its inspiration from Princess Diana. Though the royal yacht Britannia, which she was frequently photographed on, is out of commission now, yacht style is as relevant as ever, with its unyielding preppy vibe symbolizing quiet grandeur throughout the decades. You, too, can get in on the style even if you don't plan to board a yacht any time soon.

Dress for a day on the water

Preppy polo outfit

The best way to incorporate indulgences of yacht styling is to imagine that you're dressing for a day on the water, the namesake of the fashion trend. Don preppy polos, flowing skirts, and timeless tote bags. Avoid form-fitting styles, but do accentuate your waist with belts and ties for a tailored look, and add classic accouterments like bows and pearls.  Since yacht style doesn't require an actual boat, you can ditch sea-inspired boat shoes for classic pumps and sunglasses à la Audrey Hepburn.

Shoulder sweaters are signature staples

Man wearing polo shirt and sweater tied around shoulders

When you wear a polo, don't forget to add a sweater on top, even if the weather is balmy. A sweater casually draped over the shoulders and tied loosely below the collar of your shirt is the ultimate staple of preppy yacht style, and quickly escalates the elegance of your appearance. To nail the vibe, evoke the spirit of "Gossip Girl" characters, casually lounging in their penthouses in the city with their loosely draped shoulder sweaters subtly signaling opulence.

Loose-fitting linen and breezy button-downs nail the look

Preppy button-down shirt and shorts

A loose-fitting button-down shirt with high-waisted linen shorts that are belted or tied at the waist is a pairing that gives vibes of effortlessly upscale couture to make you look like you're about to spend a relaxing day out on the water aboard an expensive yacht. Accessorized with open-toed sandals or heels and a large, casual tote bag, the look will transition seamlessly from running errands or laughing with friends over lunch al fresco to sipping lavender lemonade and leaning into the sweet coastal breeze with a slice of key lime pie.

Seersucker is seriously comfortable and fashionably fancy

Woman in seersucker outfit

In the wardrobe of anyone with a preppy, understated, affluent style is at least one garment made from seersucker fabric. Puckered cotton fabric that's thinly crafted, the lightweight material of seersucker originated in India prior to attaining global popularity, particularly in the southern U.S. during days predating air conditioning. Since the fabric, hallmarked by its pastel stripes, is a no-sweat choice (literally) for summer months, the billowing garments are particularly favored for sunny, breezy yacht fashion. Swimwear, dresses, bow ties, Bermuda shorts, skirts, and suits of seersucker symbolically signal luxurious comfort.

Preppy accessories instantly elevate your ensemble

For an immediate boost to any outfit, the smallest of preppy accessories can go a long way toward elevating your look with subtle elements of affluent taste. In fact, the foundation of quiet luxury is to allow your attire to speak for you through silent gestures indicating a luxurious lifestyle. Take the trademark yacht-style seersucker fabric and use it for a complementary bow on your bag, or be even more elusive with monogrammed  accessories on your key fob. Less is definitely more when it comes to being luxuriously preppy.

Comfortable flowing pieces are critical

Woman on sailboat

Yacht style promotes ease of prep and laidback vibes. Comfort is critical and form-fitting garments, scratchy fabrics, and apparel that inhibits dexterity won't do. Instead, flowing, summery staples are must-have pieces. Try pairing classic boating trends with sarongs. The fun, flowy fabric can be worn in an array of styles. Go barefoot with your sarong attire for quintessential subtle opulence, as the fabric whimsically waves in the wind.

Building a Classic Preppy Wardrobe

timeless elegance never fades

You can't dress like you own a yacht without first building a classic preppy wardrobe that exudes timeless sophistication and effortless elegance . Think of it as laying the foundation for a stylish life.

To start, focus on a core color palette that's both versatile and visually appealing. Stick to a mix of crisp whites, navy blues, and earthy tones like olive green and terracotta. These hues will provide a solid base for your preppy wardrobe and can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.

For preppy inspiration, look to the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Audrey Hepburn , who epitomized effortless elegance with their classic style. Take note of their penchant for simple, high-quality pieces like tailored blazers, fitted dresses, and statement accessories .

Don't be afraid to add a touch of personality to your outfits with bold stripes , bright colors, or playful patterns. Remember, the key to pulling off a preppy look is to look polished without looking like you're trying too hard. With a solid foundation in place, you'll be well on your way to dressing like you own a yacht – even if you don't.

The Importance of Quality Denim

When it comes to quality denim , you're not just buying a pair of jeans – you're investing in a wardrobe staple that can make or break your preppy style.

To get it right, you'll want to focus on three key areas: a flawless fit that skims your body in all the right places, a denim fabric that's as comfortable as it's durable, and a style that's versatile enough to take you from yacht to dinner party.

Fitting Is Key

A well-fitted pair of jeans is the anchor of any stylish wardrobe, and investing in quality denim is essential to pulling off that effortless, yacht-owner vibe. You can't just throw on any old pair of jeans and expect to look like a million bucks. Tailoring matters , and perfect proportions are key to creating a polished, put-together look.

When it comes to fitting, it's all about balance . You want your jeans to skim your body in all the right places, without being too tight or too loose. A good pair of jeans should make you feel confident and comfortable, like you're wearing a second skin.

And let's be real, there's nothing worse than a pair of jeans that's too long or too short. It's all about finding that perfect length, and having them tailored to fit your body like a glove.

Denim Fabric Matters

Quality denim is the unsung hero of a stylish wardrobe, elevating even the most basic pair of jeans into a chic, yacht-owner-worthy staple. You see, not all denim is created equal. The right fabric can make all the difference in how your jeans fit, feel, and look.

When it comes to denim weaving techniques , you want to look for brands that use high-quality methods like selvedge or shuttle loom weaving. These techniques create a denser, more durable fabric that will only get better with time.

But quality denim isn't just about aesthetics; it's also about sustainability. Sustainable denim production is a must in today's eco-conscious world. Look for brands that use environmentally-friendly practices like organic cotton , recycled water , and reduced waste .

Not only will you be doing your part for the planet, but you'll also be investing in a pair of jeans that will last for years to come. So, don't settle for cheap, flimsy denim. Invest in quality, and your wardrobe (and the planet) will thank you.

Style Versatility Counts

With a solid foundation of high-quality denim in your wardrobe, you're now poised to reap the benefits of style versatility , where one great pair of jeans can effortlessly anchor a multitude of outfits. Think of it: with adaptable attire like a well-fitting pair of jeans , you can easily mix and match to create a variety of looks.

Want to dress up for a night out? Swap your graphic tee for a crisp white button-down and add a blazer. Want to keep things casual for a weekend brunch ? Pair your jeans with a comfy sweater and sneakers.

The beauty of quality denim lies in its ability to blend seamlessly into any eclectic ensemble. Whether you're pairing your jeans with a flowy sundress or a tailored leather jacket, the right pair of jeans will always be the anchor that ties the look together.

Dress Shirts for Every Occasion

formal and casual options

As you upgrade your wardrobe to yacht-worthy status, a versatile collection of dress shirts is essential.

You'll want to consider a range of classic fit options to suit different body types and occasions, from tailored slim-fits for formal events to relaxed fits for casual gatherings.

Classic Fit Options

A classic fit dress shirt is the ultimate wardrobe staple , capable of effortlessly elevating your style for everything from a casual day out to a black-tie event.

When it comes to preppy trends , a classic fit is the way to go – it's timeless fashion that never goes out of style. A well-fitted classic dress shirt will skim your body in all the right places, creating a streamlined look that's both polished and put-together.

For a more relaxed look, try pairing a classic fit dress shirt with a pair of dark wash jeans and loafers.

Or, dress it up with a navy blazer and trousers for a sharp, sophisticated look.

The beauty of a classic fit dress shirt lies in its versatility – it can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion.

When choosing a classic fit dress shirt, look for a slim collar and French cuffs to add a touch of elegance.

With a classic fit dress shirt in your wardrobe, you'll be well on your way to creating a preppy-inspired style that's both effortless and enviable.

Pattern and Texture

Dive into the world of pattern and texture , where a simple dress shirt can be transformed into a statement piece that elevates your entire outfit and makes you look like a million bucks. You don't need a yacht to rock a prep-inspired look , but you do need to know how to mix and match patterns and textures like a pro.

Pay attention to stripe direction – horizontal stripes can add width, while vertical stripes can create a lengthening effect. Experiment with different directions to find what works best for your body type.

Mix and match textures to add depth to your outfit. Try pairing a smooth cotton dress shirt with a rougher-textured blazer or trousers.

Geometric motifs like checks and plaids can add a touch of sophistication to your look. Try pairing a subtle geometric pattern with a solid-colored pant or skirt.

Don't be afraid to play with scale – a bold, oversized pattern can be just as stylish as a tiny, intricate one.

Collar Style Variations

With a dizzying array of collar styles to choose from, it's easy to get lost at sea – but don't worry, we're about to chart a course through the choppiest of dress shirt waters, so you can find the perfect collar to match your unique sense of style.

Let's dive into the wonderful world of collar style variations. From the sleek, modern lines of a Point Collar to the timeless charm of a Spread Collar , each style has its own distinct personality.

But if you want to add a touch of preppy flair to your wardrobe, consider opting for a Sport Collar or Wing Tips .

A Sport Collar is perfect for more casual, outdoor occasions, such as sailing or tennis matches. It's a great choice for showcasing bold, bright colors and fun patterns.

Wing Tips, on the other hand, exude a more refined, elegant air. These stylish collars are ideal for black-tie events or formal dinners .

Whichever collar style you choose, remember to pair it with a matching or complementary cuff style to create a cohesive, polished look that's sure to make you feel like a million bucks.

Blazer Essentials for Men and Women

A well-tailored blazer is the ultimate power player in any wardrobe, elevating even the most basic of outfits into a chic, yacht-worthy ensemble that's sure to turn heads.

When it comes to blazer essentials, you'll want to focus on finding the perfect combination of fabric, style, and fit.

For both men and women, the key to pulling off a blazer is to choose a style that complements your body type and personal taste.

  • Navy and charcoal are neutrals : These classic colors are versatile and easy to pair with other pieces in your wardrobe.
  • Wool and cotton are must-haves : Look for blazers made from high-quality wool or cotton fabrics that will keep you warm and stylish.
  • Fit is everything : Make sure your blazer fits well and isn't too tight or too loose. You want to be able to move freely and feel confident.

Accessories That Make or Break

small details big impact

Now that you've nailed the perfect blazer, it's time to focus on the accessories that can either elevate or sink your entire outfit – think of them as the anchors that keep your look grounded or the rudders that steer it off course.

As a prep enthusiast, you know that accessorizing is all about striking the right balance. When it comes to topping off your look, Preppy hats are a must-try. From fedoras to boater hats, a classic Preppy hat adds a touch of sophistication and whimsy to your outfit.

Statement jewelry is another essential in the preppy playbook. Whether it's a chunky anchor-shaped necklace or a bold stripe-print cuff, statement jewelry has the power to make your outfit pop.

When incorporating statement pieces, remember less is often more – choose one bold accessory and keep the rest of your look understated to avoid visual overload. Trust us , it's better to make a splash with one fabulous piece than to get lost in a sea of baubles and beads .

Putting It All Together With Confidence

You've curated the perfect blazer, added a dash of prep flair with accessories, and now it's time to tie everything together with confidence – think of it as setting sail on a stylish voyage where you're the captain of your own fashion ship.

Your personal style isn't just about the clothes you wear, but how you wear them. It's time to own that preppy look and make it shine with confidence.

To pull off the preppy look with confidence, keep the following tips in mind:

Walk the walk : Maintain good posture, keep your head held high, and own that catwalk (or sidewalk).

Make eye contact : Connect with others through confident eye contact, it shows you're engaged and interested.

Smize : A smile is the best accessory, and a confident one can make all the difference in your body language.

Be authentic : Don't try to be someone you're not, your personal style should reflect your personality and make you feel confident and comfortable.

You've got the preppy handbook down pat, but you're thinking, 'Isn't this style just for the privileged few?' Not necessarily.

Preppy is a mindset, not a bank account . It's about confidence, quality, and timeless style.

You don't need to own a yacht to rock a crisp white shirt or a pair of well-fitted chinos. Own the look , and you'll own the room.

So go ahead, dress like you're sailing the high seas – even if you're just sailing through your daily routine.

Yachty by Nature

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

hefner yacht rock outfits attire clothes fashion yachty by nature

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

yachty hawaiian shirt attire clothing clothes wear suit uniform costume

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Happy to be your guide here.  Feel free to comment and add some great ideas on this post or on social media. #yachtrock #yachtrockoutfits #yachtybynature #yachtattire #yachtrockfashion

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

THIS is everything!!! I love it Carl!!!

Ahoy Jenny! THanks so much for the kind compliment 🙂 As you know, we’re super inspired and love switching up the outfits, attire, clothing, and costumes. Yacht Rock rules!

11 men's yachting wardrobe essentials

Yves Salomon tracksuit

A perfectly tailored suit, a cashmere sweater, leather loafers: there are certain pieces no man's wardrobe would be complete without. Featuring iconic items by designers including Larusmiani, Gucci and Ralph Lauren, we uncover the heritage, history and design features that make these items indispensable to the modern  superyacht owner .

Athleisure has been fashion’s favourite buzzword for (too) many seasons – and often used to mask sartorial laziness. Not the case with this leather tracksuit by Yves Salomon: with buttery soft leather and a slimming cut in a chic mustard shade, it screams private jet, not grocery run. For extra style points, wear it with an untucked shirt and white trainers.

Leather jacket in mustard brown, £1,310; trouser, £950, yves-salomon.com

Larusmiani swim shorts

After more than a decade in the fashion wilderness, the camouflage print re-emerged in 2017, when it was spotted everywhere on the runway – from street-style favourites Off-White and Vetements to sartorial powerhouses Bottega Veneta and Cerruti. Since then, it has shown no sign of disappearing from the world’s wardrobes – you’ll find it on jackets, shirts, trousers, backpacks and more. That’s hardly surprising, since the camo pattern acts like a neutral and goes with pretty much everything. Wear it on deck this Caribbean season with these Larusmiani swimming shorts.

Ecoalf jacket

Spanish brand Ecoalf was founded by Javier Goyeneche to create clothes from recycled material and today it collects hundreds of tonnes of discarded plastic from the bottom of the Mediterranean to create cool outerwear – so far, it has recycled 70 million plastic bottles. This Tucson waterproof jacket is made with 100 per cent recycled nylon fashioned from discarded fishing nets.

Stefano Ricci trainers

Photographer: Josh Hight; Stylist: Sam Smith

Perfect for pairing with everything from summer shorts to a modern slim-cut suit, dress trainers are the new men’s wardrobe must-have and few do them better than Stefano Ricci. Founded on a 100 per cent made in Italy ethos, each pair is handcrafted in fine leather or crocodile skin, with inspiration taken from the eponymous designer’s Florentine heritage. Choose a bold blue hue for spring or, for something truly special, make use of the brand’s bespoke accessory service.

Loro Piana bomber

Photographer: Josh Hight, Stylist: Sam Smith

For most yacht owners and guests the Loro Piana brand needs no introduction. Whether it’s the Storm System gear for regatta-goers, highly sought after Vicuna wool knits, or breezy linen shirts, the chances are there’s something with a Loro Piana label on board wherever you’re sailing. And now you can add to your collection with this super soft cashmere and jersey hooded bomber – ideal for braving the worst of the winter elements.

J. M. Weston loafers

Founded in 1891 by Édouard Blanchard, JM Weston’s elegant loafers have been a staple of Parisian style for more than a century. Still handmade in the Limoges factory from which they originated, Weston’s ‘mocs’ became a cult hit in the 1960s when worn by rebel French Mods known as the “Bande du Drugstore”. New interpretations under current creative director Michel Perry remain primed for the modern wardrobe. This turmeric-hued pair is a case in point.

Brioni shirt

Founded in Rome in 1945, Brioni has been a trailblazer since it staged the first ever men’s fashion show, at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence in 1952. Now helmed by Australian creative director Justin O’Shea, the house’s booming bespoke and ready-to-wear lines are a perfect example of prized Italian craftsmanship. A case in point is this classically elegant fitted shirt – add a simple Brioni gold pin for unexpected edge at your next formal yacht dinner. Zoe Dickens

Tod's loafers

Todd Marchard

Diego Della Valle, the chairman and CEO of Tod’s, is a man who loves the sea. He also loves the mythology of American casualwear and sees this epitomised in the enduring style of one John Fitzgerald Kennedy. These two passions combine happily in the fact that since 1998 Della Valle has been the owner of Marlin , a boat that was for many years in the Kennedy family.

Della Valle’s forebears were shoemakers in the Marche region of Italy, where Tod’s is still based, and the company has been built on a combination of Italian craftsmanship and the relaxed weekend style of the US, which the young Della Valle saw while working there for his father’s shoe business. It struck him that, while Italians oozed style, it was based around formal wear, while the Americans dressed down to relax. Della Valle recognised in the humble driving shoe a perfect opportunity to express his new vision for an Italian casual lifestyle and created the now famous Tod’s moccasin, the Gommino. It has a sole covered with 133 rubber pebbles, or gommini. Since its launch in the 1970s, the model has been rendered in a multitude of versions in a variety of materials and colours, featuring various details.  Peter Howarth

Tod’s Leo Clamp Gommino, £380, tods.com

Ralph Lauren shirt

Sean Gleason

There are few better suited to dress the aspirational world of yachting than Ralph Lauren. His curated mix of preppy youth, classic cuts and all-American appeal make his designs favourites for life at sea.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the brand’s signature chino. With a broad following, these trousers have cemented their place as the stylish choice for the wealthy at play. How to wear yours this summer? Keep things simple with a tailored white shirt and rolled cuff. Zoe Dickens

Persol sunglasses

Like many of the best designs, Persol sunglasses (from the Italian per il sole, meaning “for the sun”) were born out of necessity. In 1917, Turin photographer and optician Giuseppe Ratti began making eyewear for Italian air force pilots and Alpini soldiers fighting in the snowy Dolomites.

After the war, these goggles and later, sunglasses, with the famous Silver Arrow hinge, caught on among yachtsmen and petrolheads alike. By the 1960s, Jack Kennedy was wearing them and Marcello Mastroianni donned the classic Persol 649 in the 1961 comedy Divorce Italian Style . Seven years later, Steve McQueen ensured continued “cool factor”, when he wore the folding version of the 649, the 714, with striking cobalt-blue lenses, in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). The 714 was (and is) made with natural cotton acetate, photopolarising lenses and flexing cylinders in the arm to create a more personalised fit. Chris Madigan

September 16, 2024

Preppy style, oh how you make my heart flutter! It’s like stepping into a world where everyone’s always ready for a garden party or a yacht excursion. But let’s be real, most of us are just trying to look put-together while juggling a million things. Fear not, my fellow fashion enthusiasts! I’ve scoured the runways, raided the closets of the chicest preps I know, and even channeled my inner Blair Waldorf to bring you 25 preppy outfits that’ll have you looking like you’ve got your life together (even if you’re secretly binge-watching Gossip Girl for the fifth time).

1. The Classic Blazer and Jeans Combo

Woman in preppy blazer and jeans outfit

Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? Throw on a tailored blazer over your favorite jeans, and voila! You’re ready to conquer the world (or at least look like you are).

2. Pleated Skirt and Sweater Set

Woman in preppy pleated skirt and sweater outfit

Channel your inner schoolgirl (minus the homework) with this timeless combo. Just don’t forget to practice your hair flip for maximum effect.

3. The Polo Dress

It’s like wearing a giant polo shirt, but make it fashion. Perfect for those “I woke up like this” days when you still want to look put-together.

4. Cropped Trousers and Loafers

Woman in preppy cropped trousers and loafers outfit

Show off those ankles, darling! This look screams “I summer in the Hamptons” (even if you’ve never been).

5. The Tennis Skirt Ensemble

Who says you need to know how to play tennis to rock this look? Just practice your “I totally meant to do that” face for when you inevitably trip over nothing.

6. Chino Shorts and Button-Down

Woman in preppy chino shorts and button-down outfit

Perfect for those “Is it too hot for pants?” days. Bonus points if you can keep the shorts wrinkle-free for more than five minutes.

7. The Sweater Vest Look

Woman in preppy sweater vest outfit

Embrace your inner grandpa, but make it chic. It’s like a hug for your torso, but make it fashion.

8. Nautical Stripes and White Pants

Woman in preppy nautical stripes outfit

Ahoy, fashion! This look says “I’m ready for a yacht party” (even if you’re just headed to the grocery store).

9. The Shirtdress

Woman in preppy shirtdress outfit

It’s like wearing your favorite button-down, but longer. Perfect for those days when you can’t be bothered with pants.

10. Madras Plaid Pants

Woman in preppy Madras plaid pants outfit

Who needs a personality when you have pants this loud? Just kidding, you’re fabulous AND your pants are fun.

Woman in preppy cardigan and pearls outfit

Channel your inner First Lady (minus the political drama) with this classic look. Tea and tiny sandwiches not included.

12. Seersucker Suit

Woman in preppy seersucker suit outfit

Nothing says “I’m ready for summer” quite like seersucker. Just try not to look like a walking ice cream parlor.

13. The Turtleneck and Trousers Look

Woman in preppy turtleneck and trousers outfit

For when you want to look intellectual, but also like you could attend a yacht club meeting at a moment’s notice.

14. Monogrammed Everything

Woman in preppy monogrammed outfit

Because nothing says “I have my life together” quite like having your initials on everything you own.

15. The Polo and Khaki Skirt Combo

Woman in preppy polo and khaki skirt outfit

16. Pastel Colored Pants

Who says preppy can’t be colorful? These pants say “I’m fun, but I also have a 401k.”

17. The Embroidered Shirt

Woman in preppy embroidered shirt outfit

It’s like your grandmother’s tablecloth, but make it wearable. And chic. And not at all like actual upholstery.

18. Croquet Chic

Woman in preppy croquet-inspired outfit

You don’t need to know how to play croquet to rock this look. Just practice your “I’m concentrating” face for maximum effect.

19. The Oxford Shirt Dress

It’s like wearing your favorite button-down, but socially acceptable as a full outfit. Win-win!

20. Bermuda Shorts and Blazer

Woman in preppy cable knit sweater outfit

It’s like wearing a hug. A very stylish, socially acceptable hug that says “I’m ready for fall, and possibly a sailing excursion.”

22. Gingham Everything

Woman in preppy gingham dress outfit

Because nothing says “I’m ready for a picnic” quite like looking like the picnic blanket itself. Embrace it!

23. The Penny Loafer Look

Woman in preppy penny loafer outfit

Slip into these bad boys and instantly feel like you’ve got your life together. Even if you’re just faking it ’til you make it.

24. Critter Pants

Woman in preppy critter pants outfit

Because nothing says “I’m quirky but in a socially acceptable way” quite like pants covered in tiny animals or objects.

25. The Tennis Sweater

Woman in preppy tennis sweater outfit

You don’t need to know your backhand from your forehand to rock this look. Just practice looking pensively into the distance while holding a tennis racket.

And there you have it, folks! 25 preppy outfits that’ll have you looking like you’ve got your life together, even if you’re secretly stress-eating caviar (is that a thing prep people do?). Remember, the key to pulling off preppy style is confidence. So straighten that posture, pop that collar, and strut your stuff like you’re walking onto a yacht named after your great-grandmother. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a croquet match to pretend to understand.

Yacht Outfit Guide: Classy and Chic Maritime Adventure

What To Wear On A Yacht featured image by the supermelon

Attending a yacht party calls for a blend of sophisticated style and relaxed elegance, capturing the essence of the nautical setting while ensuring your comfort and confidence.

Whether envisioning a glamorous sunset cocktail party, a leisurely sunbathing session, or a serene exploration of hidden coves, curating the perfect yacht ensemble becomes an art.

This guide navigates the realm of yacht fashion, offering insights and inspiration to ensure you’re impeccably dressed for every moment of your nautical experience.

From chic essentials that capture the essence of oceanic elegance to tips on selecting attire that harmonizes with both sea and sky, the following are the style essentials to elevate your yacht experience to unparalleled heights.

preppy yacht attire

Yacht settings generally adhere to a semi-formal dress code, implying that items like shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts are best avoided. Instead, consider selecting slacks or khakis for men; sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirts are excellent choices for women.

When in doubt about your attire, it’s preferable to lean towards a more polished appearance rather than a casual one.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When dressing for a yacht outing, opt for a nautical-inspired ensemble. Consider wearing a crisp white shirt paired with tailored shorts, boat shoes or espadrilles, and a sun hat.

This classic look combines comfort and style, suitable for both genders, while capturing the essence of a yacht setting.

Before finalizing your outfit for the boat party, there are a couple of factors to consider, with the first being the prevailing weather conditions. If the temperature is soaring, opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics is paramount.

Donning stylish swimsuits is integral to yacht party attire, accompanied by chic cover-ups and delicate, breezy dresses or shorts. By skillfully coordinating these elements, you can effortlessly master the art of yacht-worthy fashion.

preppy yacht attire

However, in the event of cooler temperatures, ensuring you’re well-insulated is imperative. Being caught unprepared amidst the vast ocean during fall or winter could prove quite uncomfortable.

Moreover, regardless of the schedule, having a sweatshirt or a light denim jacket at the ready is prudent, particularly when the night descends.

The maritime environment can turn quite chilly after sunset, especially during the colder months.

Furthermore, your outfit choice should be tailored to the specific activities planned aboard the yacht. If your plan revolves around leisurely moments on the boat’s deck, a combination of shorts and a T-shirt layered over a stylish bikini is likely suitable.

However, should water sports be part of the agenda, selecting attire that remains relatively dry and light prevents any undue discomfort caused by excess moisture.

Lastly, take into consideration the overarching ambiance of the yacht setting. For a laid-back gathering, opting for a more relaxed outfit is acceptable.

However, if the occasion leans towards a more refined tone, it’s essential to align your attire accordingly.

Midi or maxi dresses and stylish rompers and jumpsuits are excellent choices that seamlessly blend sophistication with style.

Essential attire for women at a yachting event includes cover-ups, tunics, kaftans, and dresses with a fluid, breezy quality. These pieces harmonize seamlessly with swimwear, offering both a stylish layer and a means of keeping cool and comfortable.

Yacht SettingOutfit Ideas for Women
Sunset EleganceFlowy maxi dress, espadrille wedges
Glamorous NightsWrap-style jumpsuit, statement earrings
Resort GlamOff-the-shoulder romper, wedges
Sophisticated CharmWhite wide-leg pants, silk blouse

Opting for a maxi or lace cover-up exudes an elevated charm, while selecting a sundress cover-up or a romper lends a more relaxed aura. For everyday yacht wear, consider the practicality of linen dresses and side tie skirts, both of which effortlessly complement the maritime experience.

preppy yacht attire

No looks exudes the maritime quite like a cover-up, and these lightweight garments serve as a stylish and functional layering option when transitioning between water-based activities and lounging on the beach or on a yacht. Cover-ups are typically made from materials like chiffon, cotton, linen, or lightweight knits, which make them breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Moreover, cover-ups offer protection from the sun’s rays while maintaining an air of sophistication. The following are common cover-ups for women:

preppy yacht attire

With their loose and flowing silhouettes, tunics further amplify a great seaside look. They often feature intricate designs, embroidery, or patterns and can be made from lightweight materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics.

Tunics provide coverage for the upper body while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cool. Their effortless charm pairs well with the nautical backdrop, allowing women to exude both comfort and elegance.

preppy yacht attire

Kaftans are loose-fitting, maxi-length dresses with wide sleeves, often made from flowing fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lightweight cotton. Kaftans can be quite elegant and are popular for their bohemian vibe. They offer women full coverage and the ultimate in  comfort during warm weather.

preppy yacht attire

Slay it with a sarong!

Typically made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like rayon or silk, sarongs are versatile pieces of fabric that can be wrapped around the waist like a skirt, tied as a halter dress, or used as a shawl. Sarongs are easy to pack and provide coverage while allowing flexibility in styling.

preppy yacht attire

Inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, kimonos are open-front, flowing garments that often feature vibrant prints and patterns and are made from lightweight materials.

Kimonos are distinctive, add a touch of elegance, and can be worn over swimsuits or paired with shorts and tops.

Oversized Shirts

preppy yacht attire

For a more casual approach, an oversized button-up shirt can be worn as a cover-up. It’s a versatile option that can be worn open or buttoned up, offering coverage and protection from the sun.

Play up the look with vibrant colors or intricate patterns for an engaging yacht style.

Is a cocktail dress a suitable choice for women?

For occasions leaning towards the more refined end of the spectrum, a sophisticated yacht party might very well warrant the selection of a cocktail dress, or in rarer instances, an elegant gown. The cocktail dress code, being slightly less formal than full evening wear, aligns well with such gatherings’ relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.

Ideally, the event’s formality level will be communicated beforehand, but exceptions do exist.

When the ambiance is less formal than a boat wedding, alternative options like wide-legged pants, rompers, or wrap skirts can be considered. Attire resembling what you would choose for a beach or poolside gathering would also be fitting.

An essential consideration when attending any yacht event is the choice of footwear. It’s advisable to steer clear of heels – opting for flat shoes is a safer and wiser choice to ensure a comfortable and accident-free experience.

Accessorizing

Donning both hats and sunglasses is entirely fitting aboard a yacht, and they provide an added shield against the sun’s rays, which is undoubtedly beneficial.

Not only will you seamlessly blend in, but you’ll also be safeguarding your eyes and skin from potentially harmful UV exposure. Including sunscreen in your essentials is equally crucial to ensure comprehensive protection.

preppy yacht attire

Amongst men, the favored ensemble for yacht journeys in motion often comprises a breezy, lightweight linen shirt, offering both comfort and composure throughout the excursion. Naturally, a pair of swim shorts is indispensable, ensuring you’re perpetually prepared for impromptu dips.

Completing the ensemble, opt for casual boat shoes that complement your yacht attire seamlessly.

Stylish sunglasses are essential to the maritime look as a vital accessory, effectively shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare.

Yacht SettingOutfit Ideas for Men

Nautical VibesNavy blazer, white pants
Sporty EleganceTailored swim trunks, boat shoes
Relaxed ChicLinen shirt, chino shorts

While specific occasions may necessitate more refined apparel, such as dinner parties, these suggestions primarily focus on curating a laidback, relaxed aesthetic.

preppy yacht attire

Linen button-downs stand as the preferred choice for men while onboard due to their lightweight and breathable nature.

They have long been associated with boating, ensuring a harmonious fit within a yacht environment. Light cotton options also offer similar advantages, with items like polo shirts seamlessly blending into a crowd.

Even a well-chosen t-shirt can find its place, though appropriateness should be tailored to the context. However, a slightly elevated appearance may be preferable for slightly more formal outings or celebratory gatherings.

A great pair of tailored pants are a definite option for a day or night out on a yacht. Linen pants , chinos, or loose slacks are all versatile enough for any event.

Yet, a reliable pair of shorts proves invaluable if the yacht’s purpose involves active endeavors like fishing or sailing.

These offer comfort and freedom and ensure readiness for any unforeseen water-related situations.

In the realm of yacht wear, swim shorts emerge as a particularly pertinent item, given the likelihood of aquatic escapades. Whether you find yourself plunging into the Mediterranean or relaxing a jacuzzi, shorts are a pragmatic must-have.

Be it for leisure or the potential of an emergency scenario requiring a swift swim, swim shorts serve both purposes seamlessly.

Ensuring both security and comfort, boat shoes are an indispensable inclusion for any yacht experience as they prevent unwanted slipping on the deck. Sometimes referred to as deck shoes, they closely resemble loafers but include laces for added practicality.

For more relaxed outings, some opt for flip flops, which can be suitable for casual days spent with friends.

Accessories

Wearing sunglasses aboard a yacht transcends mere fashion, assuming the role of a vital shield against the sun’s unyielding glare and potentially harmful UV rays. As you sail on a maritime journey, these shades emerge as a reliable companion, diligently safeguarding your eyes from discomfort and potential long-term harm.

Yacht SettingAccessories and Essentials for Men

Whether you’re leisurely absorbing the sun’s warmth or actively engaging in water-based thrills, sunglasses exude an undeniable air of refined elegance, effortlessly elevating your yacht ensemble.

What Is Suitable to Wear to a Yacht Party?

Crafting the perfect attire for a yacht party involves a skillful equilibrium among comfort, style, and functionality, seamlessly embracing the maritime setting.

Embracing an effortlessly chic and laid-back approach, the careful curation of your outfit can significantly enrich your voyage across the waves.

Deciding on fabrics that prioritize breathability and lightness, such as linen or cotton, ensures your ease amidst the sea breeze. In the backdrop of daytime gatherings, a palette of soft and pastel hues, including serene blues and delicate pastels, imparts an invigorating and lively ambiance.

Opting for a versatile piece like a fashionable sundress, coupled with boat shoes that perfectly balance comfort and trendiness, encapsulates the essence of casual sophistication.

As twilight descends and the festivities extend into the evening, embracing darker shades introduces an element of refinement, harmonizing with the fading sunlight.

The thoughtful inclusion of tasteful accessories, like a wide-brimmed hat for enhanced sun protection and stylish sunglasses that shield your eyes and accentuate your maritime charisma, further elevate your ensemble.

Ultimately, the crux lies in aligning your attire with the occasion’s level of formality, while never compromising on comfort, and embodying an aesthetic that mirrors the serene allure of open waters.

Final Considerations

Embracing a fusion of refinement and casual ease emerges as a simple and effective strategy when considering yacht attire. While certain occasions might warrant a subtle refinement, the extent of this shift hinges upon the unique event and the preferences of the hosts.

Give precedence to fabrics like linen and other lightweight options to optimize comfort. An indispensable element to include is a pair of boat shoes, guaranteeing stability on the deck. Additionally, ensure you don’t neglect key essentials such as swimsuits and vital sun protection gear, which notably includes sunglasses.

His unwavering determination and relentless pursuit of his dreams taught me the importance of resilience. He showed me that life’s adversities are not roadblocks but stepping stones towards success.

My Father, the Beacon of Wisdom

My father’s wisdom, gleaned from years of experience and a ceaseless quest for knowledge, has been my compass in the journey of life. He taught me to question, to seek, and to never settle for the ordinary. His wisdom transcends bookish knowledge, delving into the realm of life’s deeper truths. Through his guidance, I learned to appreciate the beauty of questioning, the thrill of discovery, and the joy of learning.

My Father, the Embodiment of Love

My father, my hero.

A hero is someone who inspires through their actions, someone who leads by example, and someone who makes a difference. My father, with his strength, wisdom, and love, fits this definition perfectly. He is my hero, not because he is infallible, but because he taught me that it is our imperfections that make us human. He is my hero, not because he never fell, but because he always got back up. He is my hero, not because he achieved great things, but because he showed me that the journey is more important than the destination.

In the grand narrative of my life, my father is the hero who continues to inspire and guide me. His life, a symphony of strength, wisdom, and love, resonates within me, shaping my thoughts, my actions, and my dreams. As I navigate the labyrinth of life, I am grateful for the beacon that is my father, my hero.

Father's hard work gives his family a better life

By Kristin Parker Contributing writer My dad is my hero because he does what he has to do to support his family. My dad grew up with 11 brothers and sisters in a two-bedroom trailer. His father left when he was young and never helped to support his family. His mother had to work three jobs to support them. To this day my father refuses to let my mom work, he feels that it is not right for the women to work because his mother was the only one to bring in money for his family and he feels it is his responsibility to support his family. My dad has worked in the construction field since he was 17 years old and has never taken a vacation. Sometimes, I am afraid that he's going to work himself to death, but I know he is doing it for my mom, my sister and I, so we do not have the life he did growing up. The most memorable lesson my dad has ever taught me is that to get what you want, you'd better be willing to work hard for it. Do not expect for it to just land into your lap because you know it will not.

I love my father very much, he has always been there for me and I know he always will be. I love you dad!

My Dad Turns 100: 13 Critical Life Lessons I Learned From My Father

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” – Mark Twain

I celebrated my father’s 100th birthday recently with a prayer. It is so hard to believe he has been gone for 14 years already. The son of Slovak immigrants, he survived the Great Depression, served in World War II, went to college on the GI Bill, and managed to raise eight kids on a very modest income. And yet my dad was able to later leave his kids a seven-figure stock portfolio. When I asked him how he did it, he smiled and said, “Nickels and dimes, Aug. Nickels and dimes and a million dollars’ worth of consistency and compound interest.”

I owe so much to my dad. Here are a few examples:

  • The Value of Education . My dad was fanatically committed to education. He earned a master’s degree and the course work for his PhD by going to the University of Pittsburgh at night. His children never questioned for a single second whether we would go to college. It was just assumed. I owe my own commitment to lifelong learning to my father.
  • The Value of Hard Work . Like his father before him, my dad believed that dedication and hard work could overcome just about any genetic or societal disadvantage life could throw at him. I have found this to be true. I was delivering papers, mowing lawns and shoveling snow as a 9-year-old, and I finagled my first full time summer job at the ripe old age of 12. I often met people smarter than me. Few could outwork me.
  • Be Your Best . My dad always expected my best. As a fifth grader, I managed to make the football team. One day I came home almost in tears because the coach had “hollered at me.” My dad smiled and said, “He hollered at you because he cares. He wants you to be your best. When he stops hollering is when we start to worry!”
  • The Value of Sacrifice . Look up deferred gratification in your dictionary and if my dad's picture isn’t there it should be. My dad cheerfully worked two and sometimes three jobs for his family. He expected very little for himself except for that jar of cold water he kept in the "icebox" that his feckless kids kept drinking and returning empty!
  • Be a Saver and Investor . My dad got me saving and investing in stocks as a 9-year-old newspaper boy. Like him, I have been a saver rather than a spender ever since. As a corollary, my dad didn't borrow money and neither do I.
  • Don't Cut Corners . My dad never cut corners. He taught us to go the extra mile instead. "Be the first in and the last out because there is always someone watching. Successful people look around for more work rather than trying to shirk it. ‘That’s not my job!’ is not in their vocabulary.”
  • Never Worry About "The Other Guy." My dad was not envious. He didn't slack off because “the other guy" was, and he didn't worry about how much "the other guy" was making. "Don't worry about what the other guy is doing," he always said. "Make the other guy worry about what you are doing."
  • Be Bold! My dad taught me audacity. Whether it was landing front row Rolling Stones' tickets, a prep school scholarship, a handwritten letter from J.D Salinger, a job at MTV, starting my own company on $2500, or winning $100,000 in an essay contest on my first try at writing, most of my success just came from audaciously "going for it." Most folks think, "That could never happen for me." My dad taught me to think, "Why not me?"
  • Always Have a Guy . I can still see my dad calling up the owner of the best bakery in Pittsburgh. “Reg,” he would invariably say, “It’s Augie, Reg.” Soon, we would be on our way to buy bake goods for $.50 cents on the dollar. My father “had a guy” for everything. He never paid retail, and cash rarely changed hands. How did he do it? First, my father genuinely liked people. He made friends everywhere. Secondly, he was always looking for opportunities to do favors for others. “Never wait till you need something,” he often told me, “if you want people to help you offer to help them first.” I took his “pay it forward” advice to heart. Whenever I need something, my first question is, “Who do I know?” And whenever I have something, my first question is “Who can I share this with?” Whether it is bake goods or billion-dollar enterprises, the best people always “have a guy.”
  • Be a Fighter . My dad was neither violent nor physically aggressive, but he taught me to never walk away from a fight that needed fighting. When I complained of bullying as a kid, he suggested a timely sock in the kisser. I followed his advice, and I have never looked back. Fear is the single greatest obstacle on the path to success. Never let fear hold you back.
  • The Value of Struggle. Helping your kids succeed is relatively easy. Knowing when to let them struggle is hard. I was my father’s oldest son, and he desperately wanted me to succeed. But he also understood how important it was to resist the temptation to intervene. At 14, I won a scholarship to the Hotchkiss School, an exclusive boarding school in Connecticut. For the first two years I was way over my head, miserable, and failing miserably. Though sympathetic, my father wouldn’t let me quit, and in my senior year I turned it all around. Looking back, this was a crucial turning point in my life, and I owe it to my father’s ability to sit on his hands. As a leader, knowing when to intervene and when to let someone struggle is a critical skill as well.
  • Don’t Neglect Your Soul . My father was a deeply religious man. We often prayed together as a family in the car, and I can still remember him dragging my reluctant and semi somnolent body out of bed at 6 a.m. every day during Lent so we could go to Mass.  My own spirituality has always been my number one priority, and I trace every inch of success I’ve ever had back to this commitment.
  • Family is Everything . My dad was the consummate “Family Man.” He was so dedicated to his kids that when he joined a golf league at work, he took me and my brother along as 10 and 8-year-old "caddies." My mother would laugh and say, “Your father can’t even go to the grocery store without three or four of you kids for company!” My dad didn't drink, smoke, or "hang with the guys." All he wanted was to be with his family.

Shortly before he died, my dad was visited by a priest. When he left, my brother asked what they had spoken about.

"I asked Father if it was OK to pray for myself," he said.

"Of course, it is!"

"Yes, that's what Father said. But I am just so grateful for my family that I can't bring myself to ask God for anything else."

College Essay: My Parents’ Sacrifice Makes Me Strong

Rosemary Santos

After living in Texas briefly, my mom moved in with my aunt in Minnesota, where she helped raise my cousins while my aunt and uncle worked. My mom still glances to the building where she first lived. I think it’s amazing how she first moved here, she lived in a small apartment and now owns a house.

My dad’s family was poor. He dropped out of elementary school to work. My dad was the only son my grandpa had. My dad thought he was responsible to help his family out, so he decided to leave for Minnesota   because  of  many  work opportunities .

My parents met working in cleaning at the IDS  C enter during night shifts. I am their only child, and their main priority was not leaving me alone while they worked. My mom left her cleaning job to work mornings at a warehouse. My dad continued his job in cleaning at night.

My dad would get me ready for school and walked me to the bus stop while waiting in the cold. When I arrived home from school, my dad had dinner prepared and the house cleaned. I would eat with him at the table while watching TV, but he left after to pick up my mom from work.

My mom would get home in the afternoon. Most memories of my mom are watching her lying down on the couch watching her  n ovelas  –  S panish soap operas  – a nd falling asleep in the living room. I knew her job was physically tiring, so I didn’t bother her.

Seeing my parents work hard and challenge Mexican customs influence my values today as a person. As a child, my dad cooked and cleaned, to help out my mom, which is rare in Mexican culture. Conservative Mexicans believe men are superior to women; women are seen as housewives who cook, clean and obey their husbands. My parents constantly tell me I should get an education to never depend on a man. My family challenged  machismo , Mexican sexism, by creating their own values and future.

My parents encouraged me to, “ ponte  las  pilas ” in school, which translates to “put on your batteries” in English. It means that I should put in effort and work into achieving my goal. I was taught that school is the key object in life. I stay up late to complete all my homework assignments, because of this I miss a good amount of sleep, but I’m willing to put in effort to have good grades that will benefit me. I have softball practice right after school, so I try to do nearly all of my homework ahead of time, so I won’t end up behind.

My parents taught me to set high standards for myself. My school operates on a 4.0-scale. During lunch, my friends talked joyfully about earning a 3.25 on a test. When I earn less than a 4.25, I feel disappointed. My friends reacted with, “You should be happy. You’re extra . ” Hearing that phrase flashbacks to my parents seeing my grades. My mom would pressure me to do better when I don’t earn all 4.0s

Every once in  awhile , I struggled with following their value of education. It can be difficult to balance school, sports and life. My parents think I’m too young to complain about life. They don’t think I’m tired, because I don’t physically work, but don’t understand that I’m mentally tired and stressed out. It’s hard for them to understand this because they didn’t have the experience of going to school.

The way I could thank my parents for their sacrifice is accomplishing their American dream by going to college and graduating to have a professional career. I visualize the day I graduate college with my degree, so my  family  celebrates by having a carne  asada (BBQ) in the yard. All my friends, relatives, and family friends would be there to congratulate me on my accomplishments.

As teenagers, my parents worked hard manual labor jobs to be able to provide for themselves and their family. Both of them woke up early in the morning to head to work. Staying up late to earn extra cash. As teenagers, my parents tried going to school here in the U.S .  but weren’t able to, so they continued to work. Early in the morning now, my dad arrives home from work at 2:30 a.m .,  wakes up to drop me off at school around 7:30 a.m . , so I can focus on studying hard to earn good grades. My parents want me to stay in school and not prefer work to  head on their  same path as them. Their struggle influences me to have a good work ethic in school and go against the odds.

How to be a Happy Working Dad, Part One

When the Pew Research Center released its new report on modern parenthood last week, the Southern California Public Radio show “Take Two” called to see if I’d like to comment on it .

“The report finds that dads are spending more time than ever with kids,” the producer told me over the phone. “But they still feel like they aren’t spending enough.”

I had just picked up my eight year old from school and we were both in my office. As I talked on the phone, my son jumped into my lap and said, loudly enough for the producer to hear: “I’m bored! Can we go home yet?”

essay about hard working father

To test this assertion, Google “how to be a happy working parent ,” as I did a minute ago—the first 100 hits were targeted at moms. This suggests we as a culture haven’t given a lot of thought to the happiness of working fathers—and there are consequences to seeing work-life issues through a maternal lens, including a sense that a man’s individual problems represent personal, not societal, failures. When it comes to work-life fit, this is the message we hear as men: Suck it up .

But after I hung up the phone, I looked at my son and realized something important: After parenting for eight years and reading every peer-reviewed study I could find about work and family, I’ve gradually arrived at a place of equilibrium. Here are my 10 tips—drawn from a combination of scientific research and personal experience—for how to be a happy working dad. (This is part one, with five tips; here’s part two with five more.)

1. Find yourself a family-friendly workplace—and decide how much money that’s worth to you.

My employer, UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, doesn’t pay me a whole lot , but it’s an ideal workplace for parents.

Formal policies permit a lot of flexibility, and our offices are adjacent to one of the university’s preschools, both of which contribute to a profoundly child-friendly atmosphere. My co-worker Emiliana breastfeeds her new baby during staff meetings; my son does his homework in the lobby.

When I was weighing this job against another that paid more money, I actually monetized that flexibility. How much was I willing to pay for the ability to pick up my son from school, take him to the dentist, bring him by the office? My answer was $5,000 a year. In other words, that’s the amount I was willing and able to sacrifice to be the working father I wanted to be.

Your answer will not be the same as mine, of course; different families have different values and needs. And in fact, your values and needs will change over time. What you need in one stage of parenthood might become less important as time goes on. If you find yourself feeling dissatisfied, ask yourself what you need right now —and then come up with a plan to get those needs met.

2. Advocate for family-friendly policies.

I recognize that I am extremely fortunate to work at an institution that offers, for example, paid leave and telecommuting options to parents.

In fact, only one out of 10 American men have access to paid paternity leave, and it’s perfectly legal for employers to fire a man for taking a day off to care for a sick child. Even when companies offer flextime, men (and women) can be informally penalized for taking advantage of it.

Sure, I have it good now—but I might not be so lucky at my next job. That’s why it’s in my long-term interest as a working father to advocate for family-friendly workplace policies. When I vote for a politician, I look at their record on family issues. I routinely sign petitions and speak out on behalf of policies like paid leave. This week, for example, Sen. Tom Harkin and Rep. Rosa DeLauro reintroduced the Healthy Families Act , “which would enable workers to earn up to seven paid sick days a year to take care of themselves or sick family members.”

Tellingly, advocates suggested supporters tweet about the act using the #StandUpForWomen hashtag, as if paid sick days were exclusively a mother’s concern. Yes, it is insulting to dads who take sick days for our kids. And yes, these are typically framed as “women’s issues”—but guys, that won’t change until we speak up.

Will doing so make you a happier working dad? Actually, the evidence says yes —volunteering and activism bring substantial mental and physical health benefits .

3. Kill your commute.

I know… cutting commute times is easier said than done.

My family recently moved from San Francisco to Berkeley—which gave me two extra hours a day with my son and vastly reduced my daily stress. Unfortunately, just as we were moving, my wife got a new job in San Francisco. Now she’s the one who commutes, for two to three hours a day on public transit.

I tell this story to acknowledge that these days, commutes are hard to eliminate. But it’s a goal worth striving for: A 2011 study by researchers at Umea University in Sweden found that couples with long commutes are 40 percent likelier to divorce, largely because of the stress a commute causes.

So the more you can close the distances between your workplace, your partner’s workplace, and your kids’ school, the happier you’re all likely to be. This is another thing I monetized—I rated a commute as being worth $1,500 per year for every 30 minutes per day. So reducing my commute from 90 to 30 minutes is worth about $3,000 a year in pay, if given a choice.

Again, your exact number will be different—my colleague Elise puts it at $5,000—but try thinking about how much you’d pay to kill your commute. At minimum, you might find the exercise cathartic!

4. Get your team in place—and on the same page.

We don’t raise kids alone, and that’s especially true when both parents work.

As a working father, you need to see yourself as a senior manager in a department whose personnel will change over the years, but whose goal remains the same: to raise healthy, happy kids.

Who is on that team? There’s the other parent, to whom you might or might not be married. They share authority with you, and you’ll need their buy-in on major decisions. To get that, you’ll need to cultivate skills like listening, empathy, negotiation, and compromise.

With the other parent, you’ll manage a progression of nannies, preschools, schools, afterschools, and summer camps. Budget permitting, you may also need to outsource certain functions, like housework and dog walking. Don’t leave all the details to your co-parent; instead, divide up responsibilities according to your complementary skills and interests, so that you feel involved and challenged.

5. Embrace flexible gender roles and the resiliency that comes with it.

When I was interviewing couples for my book The Daddy Shift , I found the happiest ones were those who weren’t hung up on ideas about what a man should do and what a woman should do. Mom didn’t look down on Dad if she made more money than him, and Dad didn’t waste time resenting the burdens of child care.

In fact, embracing flexible gender roles can make couples extremely happy—largely, I’d argue, because those beliefs are more adaptive to our 21st-century economic reality. “Given today’s precarious economic situation, the ‘happy working parent’ needs to be able to adapt and adjust,” said Baruch College sociologist Caryn Medved in an email, referring to a series of studies she conducted of two-income and reverse-traditional couples. “Gender flexibility allows, we argue, greater ability to successfully and dynamically balance work and family.”

And as the Pew study reveals, the roles and attitudes of men and women are indeed converging—men are developing more emotional and interpersonal skills; more women are going to school and to work. There’s a good reason why that’s happening. When layoffs can come at any moment, both partners need to be capable of making money and making dinner.

In other words, this flexibility and redundancy add up to greater resilience in the face of economic shocks—and it has the happy side effect of enriching men’s emotional lives and freeing both sexes from the prison of gender expectations. The point, guys, is that it doesn’t help to yearn for the good old days. We’ll all be happier when we can appreciate the positive changes and new possibilities that have emerged since our grandparents’ day.

This is part one. Here is part two , which looks more deeply at how to manage stress and your relationships.

An open letter to my hard-working father, not only do you have one job, but you fill the role of both a husband and a father as well..

An Open Letter To My Hard-Working Father

First of all, you're one of the most hard-working people I know. Not only do you have one job, but you fill the role of both a husband and a father as well. Those are full-time jobs to begin with, let alone your money-making job. You consume your days with working so we can have the life that we do. Thank you for your sacrifice.

Dad, you're a giver and you struggle saying no when it comes to helping others out. Sometimes, that overwhelms your plate, but you make the world better by doing that. You spread kindness and love through your efforts.

You give it your all at your job. I know that for a fact. And sometimes, you come home drained and completely exhausted. That also means you miss out on some of our events and you're not around a whole lot, but you try your absolute best. I appreciate your dedication to us, despite what you lose. You make the biggest sacrifice of all, time, by working to provide for our family.

Dad, you set an example for us and a standard for work ethic. I watch you and hope that the man I marry will work as hard as you do to give our children the life you gave us.

Thank you for everything. You're a great man, father, and worker. You do it all. I love you.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Little darling, it's been long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it' s been here. Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it's alright

Here Comes The Sun- Abbey Road, 1969

Blackbird- The White Album, 1968

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

SEE MORE: A Letter To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Reflections on my father: hard work and honesty.

Hi, I'm John Stonestreet. As we get ready to buy our dads a tie for Father's Day, let's hear from our old friend Chuck Colson, who in this 2008 broadcast reflected on his dad.

As this Father's Day approaches, I've been thinking a lot about my own dad, and how blessed I was to have him in my life. I was born during the Depression; by today's standards, I guess you'd say we grew up in fairly deprived circumstances. I just didn't know it.

I remember that Dad wasn't around much when I was growing up. He had to drop out of high school when he was a young man to support his family after his father died. So by the time I arrived, he was working full-time at a job, and going to accounting school-and later law school-at night-12 years in total.

One of my earliest childhood memories was my parents taking food to neighbors who had less than we did; and my mother taking me on the subway to meet my dad coming out of law school at nine o'clock at night. Then we'd accompany him home, but not before stopping for an ice cream.

As I reflect on it, I think I developed my work ethic during those days. When I got out of the Marine Corps, I thought nothing about working full-time and going to school four years at night to get my law degree. After all, my dad had set the example. Maybe one of the best days for my dad, and for me, was when I was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts and made a copy of the certificate, mailing it to my dad with a note on it saying, "Without you I could never have done this."

My dad worked so hard that I was accustomed to only spending time with him on Sunday afternoons. We'd sit on the back porch, and there was never any wasted time. My dad would drill lessons into my head: Always do an honest day's work for an honest day's pay; be willing to do anything you're required to do (that came in handy, by the way, when I had to clean toilets in Marine training); and always tell the truth. Well, I testified 44 times under oath during Watergate, and was never once accused of perjury.

But if anybody accused me of self-righteousness, I would have to stand convicted. When I got to the White House, I was meticulous about avoiding conflicts of interest: I'd put everything I owned in trusts. I wouldn't see former clients. But I ended up in prison. Self-righteousness is a form of pride.

One of the toughest things I ever experienced was stopping by my dad's hospital room on my way to prison. It was an emotional time, but at least I was able to witness to him about Christ. I won't know until I get to heaven what came of it. And my worst day followed that, when I learned, in prison, that my dad had died. I had to attend the funeral under armed guard.

But one thing I knew for sure-and I knew it even as I grieved at my father's funeral: Dad had poured everything he had into me-and into his grandkids, who became the joy of his life. And he lived his life with great honor and dignity.

All I can hope is that the same will be said of me some day by my children and grandchildren. I knew every minute my dad was proud of me-and I was proud of him.

I told him how I felt many times when he was alive. But on reflection, I wish I'd told him more often. So, don't miss the opportunity this Father's Day to tell your father how much you love him and appreciate him. Or, if he's gone, as my father is, at least give a prayer of thanks to God that you had the dad you did.

What Working Dads Can Do When a High-Pressure Job Asks Too Much

essay about hard working father

Advice to help you adapt your career to fit your life priorities.

Many working fathers find that their career success cuts both ways. They discover that they are enmeshed in a career that, while it has many merits, may no longer fit their full range of life priorities, especially as fathers, and keeps them from feeling fully successful at work and home. If you find yourself in this situation, you may not need to change as much as you think to have a big impact on your work and life. Sometimes a mindset change is enough. Look for opportunities to change within your current role first, and if bigger changes are needed, expand outward from there. The author recommends five steps to take to better align your career choices with your priorities: get over yourself; explore flexible and remote work; prioritize father-friendly employers; consider different industry sectors; and recognize and adjust to financial trade-offs.

Today’s working fathers care about success both in their careers and at home. They take pride in being good providers for their families and dedicating the time and effort necessary to be loving fathers, partners, and spouses. But many find that their career success cuts both ways. Some find themselves enmeshed in a career that, while it has many merits, may no longer fit their full range of life priorities, especially as fathers, and keeps them from feeling fully successful at work and home. As one dad I worked with told me :

My hardworking dad

Do you know what a hero is? Well, what I think is that a hero is someone you admire, and I admire my dad a lot. He is always there. I remember the words he told me, "I look at life as a gift of God. Now that he wants it back I have no right to complain." When I look at my dad, it’s like he is living happily and free on his own and doing anything he wants to do instead. My dad is a hard working father. Even though you think he is dumb because he doesn't speak a lot of English, he is still an understandable person. At work, he is really tired but he still does his job correctly. He never gives up. He is like that because when he was young, he had a very hard life. He was a banded by my grandma and grandpa in 1974 that is why I never talk about them. My dad and my uncle traveled all the way to Thailand from Laos. On the way my dad got hit by a bomb. He still survived because it was only lose. He has a hole on his head but it grew out already. He was still young back then. My uncle sold my dad to a new family. The new family treated my dad so bad, that my dad had to wake up at 3 o'clock a.m. He brings a big basket, even bigger then him and he had to go to the garden and plants rice and corn. When he comes back he has to at least bring cucumbers for the family to eat and he couldn't even bring it. He was a bused by his new family. When I listen to this story it’s like I was there watching him getting abuse and so tired from all those chores. I never knew how my dad was so poor and at an age so young. My father had been abused and careless when he was young he went to school at the age of 16. When he turned about 18, the people from the United States came to help Hmong people; they came and took my dad. My dad was saved. He stayed with my aunt from the abusive family. He graduated at Oshkosh North High School. He made a lot of Hmong friends in Wisconsin. He met a lot of relatives that is related to him. My dad played soccer in a Hmong team. While there was a soccer tournament in Sheboygan, he met my mom and they got married in 1995. Then my dad started with his new life. Now that I’m here, I am pretty happy that my father had change from years ago. He is still afraid of his past so never talk about it. I just hope my dad will be my hero and my role model forever. I wish my dad’s life is forever special.

What is the purpose of a eulogy for a father?

A eulogy for a father is a tribute that celebrates and honors his life, achievements, and the impact he's had on others. It is an opportunity to express respect, love, and appreciation for the deceased in front of family and friends gathered in remembrance.

How do I start writing a eulogy for my hardworking father?

To start, reflect on your father's life, his characteristics, notable stories, and his work ethic. Begin with a fond memory or a defining quality, such as his dedication to providing for the family, which can set the tone for your eulogy.

Can I include a poem in my father's eulogy?

Absolutely. Including a poem that resonates with your father's life or his approach to work can add emotional depth and artistic nuance to the eulogy.

What are some tips for delivering a eulogy without becoming too emotional?

Practice the eulogy multiple times, take deep breaths, and pause as needed when speaking. If possible, have a backup person ready to continue reading if it becomes too challenging to proceed.

How can I best capture my father's hardworking spirit in his eulogy?

Share specific anecdotes illustrating his strong work ethic and the values he lived by. Discuss how he approached challenges, and his commitment to completing tasks, no matter how difficult they were.

Is it appropriate to discuss my father's challenges as a hard worker?

Yes, addressing the challenges he faced can make the eulogy more relatable and highlight his perseverance. However, ensure the challenges are presented respectfully and thoughtfully.

Should I write the eulogy in first person or third person?

Eulogies are typically written in first person, as they are personal tributes reflecting a direct relationship with the deceased. But it can vary based on the speaker and their connection to the person being honored.

How can I incorporate humor into my eulogy?

Use light-hearted anecdotes or quirks related to your father's work habits. Balanced humor can bring warmth and help celebrate his life, but always be sensitive to the audience and setting.

Is it okay to mention that my father's work sometimes came before family?

Such aspects can be incorporated if approached with understanding and the intent to depict your father's character complexities sincerely and compassionately.

What length should the eulogy be?

A eulogy is typically between 5 and 10 minutes long. Aim for brevity while ensuring you encapsulate your father's essence and the message you wish to communicate.

How can I end my father's eulogy on a fitting note?

Conclude with a heartfelt statement that reflects on his legacy, such as the lessons he imparted, or a goodbye that captures the love and respect you have for him.

Can I use quotes about hardworking individuals in the eulogy?

Incorporating quotes can be powerful, particularly if they align with your father's philosophy towards work and life. Choose quotes that embody his spirit or work ethic.

How do I handle my own grief while writing and delivering the eulogy?

Give yourself permission to feel and express your emotions. Writing can be therapeutic, and it's okay to show vulnerability. Sharing your grief can also help others in their mourning process.

Should I invite others to share their stories about my father?

You can either incorporate their anecdotes into your eulogy or invite them to speak separately, allowing for a richer, multi-faceted tribute.

Is it important to mention my father's professional achievements?

Professional achievements can be mentioned to acknowledge his success and dedication, as long as they are balanced with personal attributes that capture the essence of his character.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing a eulogy for a father who was a hard worker?

Avoid focusing excessively on work to the detriment of personal stories, steer clear of controversial topics, and refrain from using clichés that may not truly reflect your father's unique personality.

How do I address my father's work colleagues in the eulogy?

Speak respectfully and gratefully about how they played a role in your father's work life, possibly sharing stories of their partnership or friendship.

What if I become too overwhelmed to finish the eulogy during the service?

Prepare by having an understanding family member or friend who could offer support or take over reading if necessary. Remember that those present will understand the difficulty of the moment.

How can I ensure that my father is remembered as more than just a hard worker?

Emphasize the multi-dimensional aspects of his life by including stories about his personal interests, his role in the family, and the values he stood for outside of work.

Is it acceptable to have a written copy of the eulogy with me when I deliver it?

Having a written copy is not only acceptable but advised. It can help keep your thoughts organized and provide support if you lose your place or become emotional.

Can the eulogy serve as a way to offer comfort to others who are grieving?

Indeed, the eulogy can provide solace by emphasizing shared experiences, the love and respect attendees had for your father, and by celebrating his life's achievements and impact on others.

How should I handle diverse reactions to the eulogy?

Be prepared for various emotional responses and respect individual grieving processes. Your words might evoke a range of feelings, and being empathetic towards the audience's reactions is important.

In conclusion, crafting a heartfelt eulogy for a father who was a hard worker is a way to express your love, admiration, and gratitude for the life he lived. By sharing memories and anecdotes about his dedication to work, family, and the community, you create a tribute that honours his memory and provides comfort to those attending the funeral service. What the Lobstermen of Maine Tell Us About the Election

A photo of a lobster and seaweed in shallow water.

By Scott Ellsworth

Mr. Ellsworth, a historian, traveled to Maine for this essay.

Mid-July is peak season on the central Maine coast. The blueberries — the small, low-bush kind long prized by the state’s jam makers and pie bakers — had started to appear in the farmers markets, along with the first of the tomatoes. Bright orange tiger lilies burst from front yards, while Queen Anne’s lace and goldenrod line the two-lane roads. The summer light dazzles, falling in soft waves upon the spruce and cedar, and brightening the paint on both midcentury saltboxes and grander Victorian homes. It’s no wonder that people want to come here.

Stonington is, without a doubt, one of the prettiest towns on the Maine coast. Over breakfast one morning at Stonecutters Kitchen, I asked Linda Nelson, the town’s economic and community development director, how many Hallmark movies had been filmed there.

“Not enough,” she replied.

Stonington also happens to be the largest lobster port in America. Dozens of fishing boats are anchored in the harbor, while lobsters caught in nearby Blue Hill, Jericho and Isle au Haut Bays are exported across the country and, more recently, across the globe. I was told by locals that not one of the beautiful wooden homes that form Stonington’s classic picture postcard view is owned by a fishing family, who now live elsewhere on Deer Isle or over the bridge on the mainland. From the perspective of a lobsterman, many of whom have deep Maine roots, the P.F.A.s — People From Away, as locals call them — are a presence to be tolerated. The lobster fishermen and the tourists and part-time residents coexist in two separate worlds, one that is changing beneath the surface.

In a significant political year, when a small group of voters in a few places will most likely shape the answers to pivotal questions about our government, how does a community living out climate change feel to its residents? This part of Maine is represented by a Democrat in Congress, but the district, Maine’s second, has voted for Donald Trump twice by decent margins; this is one of those places where every vote can matter. Here, the punishing demands of the present, how hard everyday work is, how important costs and prices are, make the pivotal nature of this time feel very distant from politics.

During much of the past two decades, record numbers of lobsters have been caught off the Maine coast, providing a steady living for scores of lobster fishermen and their families. But a host of recent pressures has been building up that may upend a way of life that, for some, stretches back for generations. Indeed, as far as climate change goes, Maine’s lobster fishing community may well be America’s own canary in the coal mine.

“Everything has changed. Everything is changing,” said Dana Black, age 50, who is a fourth-generation fisherman and lives with his wife and two daughters over the bridge in Brooksville. “That’s all I’ve done,” he said. Mr. Black got his first job, on a lobster boat, when he was 12. By the time he was in high school he had gotten a taste of what kind of money could sometimes be made on the water. He skipped school one Friday to work as a sternman on an offshore boat, hauling lobster traps. By the time he got back on dry land on Monday, he recalled, “I had made 2,700 bucks.” Like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him, Mr. Black had found his calling.
