Yacht Crew Salaries: Complete Guide to What Yacht Crew Earn

It’s no secret that the impressive yacht crew salaries attract most people into the exclusive yachting world.

Junior deckhands or stewardesses can earn starting salaries of $3000 per month. With a few years of experience and some courses to back you up, this amount moves up towards $4000-$4500 per month!

In order to compile this superyacht crew salary guideline, I have taken 10 of the top yachting platforms and used all of their data, combined with my personal experience, to reach an average salary expectation for each position.

The Captain has the highest level of responsibility onboard the yacht and hence they earn the most out of all the yacht crew salaries.

Captains are accountable for the overall safety of the yacht, crew members and guests.

They also handle daily operations of the yacht, guests, and owner liaison. They deal with management companies, port control, budgets, human resources, and many more tasks and logistics that make the job demanding and stressful.

On top of this, Captains are required to hold high levels of certifications depending on the size of the yacht they are driving.

Yacht Captain salaries can sky rocket with higher levels of qualifications.

If you are looking to become a Yacht Captain one day I recommend looking into the courses required so you can get started with licenses and sea time. It takes time to get there, but when you do it will be worth it.

Yacht Crew Salaries for Private vs Charter Yachts

There are two types of super yachts that require crew: Private and Charter yachts. The salaries for yacht crew differ slightly between the two.

Private Yacht

A private boat is owned by a single person or family who uses the yacht for their own purposes. They don’t charter it out and you can expect to have the same guests onboard for the duration of your contract.

The benefit of these programs is that you get to know your guests well so you may find it easier to manage their wants and needs.

You may also benefit from traveling to off-the-beaten-track locations as I have!

For yacht crew working on these private boats, you will usually not receive charter tips.

Charter Yacht

A charter boat is one that gets chartered out by guests. This operates as a business and also means you will have different guests for every trip.

If you work on a charter boat you can expect to receive charter tips at the end of each charter. These are usually 10%-20% of the charter fee!

Considering these tips can be anywhere from $2000-$5000 per week depending on the size of the yacht, charter boats offer great earning potential and can skyrocket your salary as a yachtie.

Yacht Crew Positions and Salaries

The organisational structure onboard a superyacht follows a strong hierarchy based upon a military model. Exact job duties and lines of authority are set and strictly adhered to. This hierarchy is followed on the vast majority of yachts; however, responsibilities of the crew on smaller yachts are often merged.

There are four departments on yachts with clear organisational structure:

  • Deck (including Bridge) – Safety, passage delivery, maintenance of the yacht's exterior, guest outdoor activities
  • Engineering – Safety and smooth operational running of the yacht
  • Interior – Housekeeping, guest wellbeing, activities, accounting
  • Galley – Food preparation, stock control, hygiene, galley maintenance

The top of the hierarchy on each yacht is the Captain , who reports to the yacht owner either directly, or through a representative or a yacht management company.

Salaries vary and depend on the yacht size, use, type and location, as well as the experience and qualification of the crew member. We included typical salaries of crew based on the data available from reputable industry sources, as well as our research of over 60,000 crew registered with us.

Deck Positions

The primary duty of the Captain is the overall safe manning and operation of the yacht. Salary is generally one of the top motivators when choosing a job onboard a yacht, yet it is usually one of the best-kept secrets within the industry.

When negotiating the final salary, it's important that both the employer and employee have an idea of what the standard is for that particular position. This will help keep the transparency and build trust.

To keep their finger on the pulse of the industry and understand the changes that are happening within, YPI CREW set off to launch the yachtingsalaries. com website in 2016. There, every crew member in the industry is welcome to enter their yacht crew salaries along with the position they serve on a yacht. The process is completely anonymous and serves as a way of monitoring the industry's yacht crew salary movements. Yacht crew can also visit the site to check the anonymous data their peers have entered for reference.

The Importance of Yacht Crew Salaries Reports

Informed employers recognise that in order to attract the top level of talent and experience for a particular role, one of the strongest influences they have is the salary they can offer. To stay competitive within the yachting industry you have to offer competitive yacht crew salaries that reflect the current marketplace. And in order to do this, you have to know what the current market rate is.

Equally, employees can use a yacht crew salary report such as this as a guide point to get an idea if a job offer is reflective of the industry and the role they serve.

The Crew Salaries Data and How We Collect It

In 2016, YPI CREW launched a peer-to-peer salary comparison website for the yachting industry. Here, anyone working in the industry is welcome to anonymously enter their yacht crew salary along with their rank.

has so far attracted over 5.655 entries since its launch in 2016, providing an informative yacht crew salary guide for employers and employees. Best of all, the salary data is free for anyone to access.

The figures shown here are median values of the real salaries entered by yacht crew. They can be used as orientational figures but the real salary offered during the recruitment process will vary depending on the candidate's experience, training, certificates, and additional skills. This is why, when looking for work, it's important to have someone guiding you and championing your skills and experience.

All yacht crew salaries are expressed in euros. Please note that the blanks in the graphs are due to either lack of entries for that particular category or the nonexistence of a role in a specific segment. For example, there are generally no third officers on yachts smaller than 50 meters.

To visit the site to contribute your salary or conduct a free search of the salary database, visit

Data presented here is collected from anonymous yacht crew members. It should not be seen as a definite portrayal of the current market but merely an informal indication.

As salary data is entered by members of the community the site works on an honesty system. There is really no incentive for contributors to mislead people about what they earn. Any inflated or inconsistent salary entries can be 'flagged' as suspicious by other members of the community or by YPI CREW and quickly removed from the system to ensure the accuracy of data is maintained.

Yacht Captain Salaries

347 captains have contributed their salaries. Of those, 287 (82%) are working on motor yachts and 60 (18%) on sailing yachts. This is coherent with the ratio of the global world yacht fleet. 83% of which are motor yachts and 17% are sailing yachts. Overall, only 33% of captains who contributed are on rotation. Rotation usually, if and when available, starts on yachts over 50m. When talking about sailing yachts, we didn't receive any entries for sailing yachts above the 51-65m segment. Also, salaries were on average slightly lower on sailing yachts compared to same-sized motor yachts.

Yacht Captains present the most senior management of a yacht, which is obviously reflected in the salary they command. Expectedly, with the size of the yacht increasing, so do salaries.

Experienced recruiters are invaluable at this level as they can definitely add value in the salary negotiation stage; it is their role to act as a middle person to ensure that, when a job offer is made, it is to all parties' satisfaction and is therefore accepted. They not only know how best to champion captains, their skills and experience at interview stage; they help craft and finesse a deal.

Deck Crew Salaries

214 Deck Crew have contributed their salaries, broken down as 116 Chief Officers, 16 Second Officers, 12 Third Officers, and 64 Deckhands.

From the data, we see that fewer Chief Officers (43%) reported having a rotational position compared to Second Engineers (57%). However, they reportedly benefit more from rotation than Captains who are at 33%.

Engineer Salaries

279 technical crew have contributed; 162 Chief Engineers, 60 Second Engineers, 16 Third Engineers, and 25 ETO/AVIT.

Overall, many more Engineers reported being on rotation than Captains. We see that 72% of Chief Engineers, 57% of Second Engineers and 56% of Third Engineers are rotational, along with 88% of ETO/AVIT Engineers.

For Chief Engineers we note that beyond the 66 – 80m segment, there is no data for permanent salaries. This reflects the engineering recruitment market where in fact, from +65m upwards, the market is rotation only, apart from a few exceptions. The same goes for Second Engineers and ETOs where permanent contracts on +65m yachts are for build contracts only. It is our experience that the market is rotation-only for Engineers on operational yachts over 65m.

Chef Salaries

65 yacht Chefs contributed with their salaries, of which 50 were Head Chefs and 15 Sous Chefs.

It is our experience that at the point of recruitment on yachts +50m, most yacht Chef jobs offer some sort of rotation, so it surprising that only 26 % of Chefs who contributed are on rotation.

Pursers & Stews

34 Pursers, 61 Chief Stews, and 22 Second Stews contributed their salaries.

Pursers, after Engineers, are the category who most have access to rotation. 59% of Pursers reported having rotation whilst only 18% of Chief Stews said they benefit from that perk.

Our experience is that in the past year, perhaps due to Covid-19, salaries offered to Stews were somewhat lower than the year before.

This underlines again the added value of registering and teaming up with recruiters who have their fingers on the pulse and are able to assist in negotiating the best conditions for job offers. Each situation is unique. Likewise, the same recruiters will advise Captains on the state of the crew market and how to position themselves in terms of conditions and salary to attract the best suitable, interested and available candidates

How Much Does a Yacht Captain Earn?

captain epaulette

Lauren Beck is the former editor of Dockwalk and was with the publication from 2006 to 2023. At 13, she left South Africa aboard a 34-foot sailing boat with her family and ended up in St. Maarten for six years. Before college, she worked as crew for a year, and then cut her journalistic teeth at Better Homes and Gardens and Ladies’ Home Journal online. She loves traveling, reading, tennis, and rooting for the Boston Red Sox.

Whether you are a captain on the lookout for new opportunities or a deckhand working your way up the career ladder, the Dockwalk Salary Survey is a helpful tool for knowing where you stand on pay. With the 2021 results now in, we find out how much yacht captains are earning around the world…

The Dockwalk Salary Survey

Our annual survey usually attracts the most responses from captains, and this year was no different with a total of 476 responses. Out of those, 336 shared their salary information. The average length of time those 476 captains have worked as captains was 14 years, with an average of 19 years spent in the industry. Most of the respondents — 89.3 percent to be precise — work on motor yachts and the vast majority — 76 percent — were based on private yachts.

It used to be that captains could count on approximately $1,000 per foot per year. But in reality, it's not so straightforward. As larger boats grow increasingly more complex, the requirements for a captain are generally much higher in terms of experience and licenses, and so captains on bigger vessels will naturally yield higher salaries.

But, as they say, size isn’t everything and the same applies when it comes to compensation. Other factors such as time in the industry, whether the boat is chartered, and if the position is rotational, are also considered. Longevity, for example, is another important factor that is likely to determine pay; some experienced captains on relatively small vessels can earn excellent money. Plus, captains are often entitled to added extras such as bonuses, health insurance, travel expenses, paid vacation, training and certification, uniform, and tips.

Yachts Between 60ft and 99ft

According to data from the 2021 Salary Survey, captains working on vessels between 60- and 99-feet were earning an average of $8,002.01 per month, with a range of $3,105 to $20,000 per month. The average monthly tips earned by captains on yachts available for charter in this range was $1,374.

Yachts Between 100ft and 139ft

Captains working aboard vessels from 100- to 139-feet may expect to earn an average of $10,108.18 per month, with a range of $$1,725 to $20,000 per month, according to Salary Survey data. The average monthly tips earned by captains on yachts available for charter in this range was $1,612.

Yachts Between 140ft and 179ft

Numbers from this year's salary survey reported that captains on yachts 140- to 179-feet could expect to earn an average of $14,166.31 per month, with a range of $5,750 to $34,500 per month. The average monthly tips earned by captains on charter yachts in this range was $2,988.

Yachts Between 180ft and 239ft

Captains on yachts in the 180- to 239-foot size category may expect to earn $16,147.26 on average per month, with a range of $9,200 to $23,250 per month. The average monthly tips earned by captains on charter yachts within this range was $3,653.

Yachts Between 240ft and 279ft

Captains working in the 240- to 279-foot size category might expect to receive an average of $15,473.58, with a range of $7,475 to $20,125 per month. The average monthly tips earned by captains on charter yachts in this range was $1,718.

Yachts Above 280ft

In our largest size category, captains on vessels 280 feet and larger could expect to earn an average of $20,540.91 per month, with a range of $9,200 to $32,000 per month. As there are not as many large vessels of this size, these jobs are usually reserved for highly skilled and experienced captains — and their pay reflects that. The average monthly tips earned by captains on charter yachts in this range was $5,600.

Captains on Rotation

Within our survey, out of all 476 captains who responded, 20.59 percent were on rotation. Rotation schedules ran the gamut from 1:1 to 4:4, and various other arrangements. Of those captains on rotation, 70 said that they were paid monthly, regardless of their rotation schedule, while 12 said they were paid for the months they worked.

Freelance Captains

Out of all the captains who responded, 58 (or 12.61 percent) were freelance when they took the survey. When we asked them to include their rates, some provided their data while others preferred not to.

According to our survey, hourly, daily, and monthly freelance rates were provided. Just one hourly rate was provided — $38 per hour. Day rates ranged from $350 to $1,680. One captain included a monthly rate of $14,560, while another specified $8,960 per month plus tax. Others included holiday day rates of $800; hourly charter rates of $75 to $100, or holiday charter rates of $100 to $150 per hour, plus gratuity.

The Female Perspective

Out of all 336 captain’s responses on vessels ranging from 10 to 150 meters, just three female respondents shared their salary figures. It shouldn’t be a surprise as female captains are a minority but are growing in number. Out of those who responded, none were freelance or on rotation.

The female captain who earns the most has been a captain for three years and has been in the industry for nine. She works on a 148-foot private motor yacht and takes home $14,000 each month.

The second female captain has held the position for 10 years and has been in the industry for 19. She works on a 17-meter private sailing yacht and takes home $3,360 each month.

The third female captain has held the position for 20 years and has been in the industry for 24. She works on a 24-meter private motor yacht and takes home $5,600 each month.

While people may look askance at talk of money and pay, it’s an important discussion to have when you’re looking to find a new job or to see how your compensation stacks up to the industry norm. In 2021, our data is surveyed from both crew and yacht agents for their salaries or their recent placement figures. In total, we had 1,060 respondents share their salary figures, plus figures from 10 crew agencies.

Different Salaries of Yacht Crew Jobs

People working on a yacht can earn extras.

Tips are another big financial reward for the team of the superyacht to be rewarded. Specially operating on a charter yacht gives crew a great chance to earn extra money, but how much is expected? It is up to it. Common tips vary from 5% to 20% of the charter cost, sharing about 10% and split by all crewmembers.

Living on a private yacht cannot provide all such advice, but it has its own crew benefits, including greater rest, longer vacations, rewards and also the prospect of the owner’s unexpected donations. Such proprietors are often considered to tip.

Different Position in a Yacht Crew, Different Salary

Without a doubt, each position has a different monthly income. So the higher position you will get the higher salary you will get. Here are an overview about some positions on a yacht.

The Captain must be skilled and trained in maritime affairs, outstanding navigational knowledge, exceptional administration, coordination, strategy and diplomacy. Captain salaries on the rise

Quay crew’s most detailed salary report to date reveals a rise in captains’ wages following a slight decline in recent years, amongst other findings….

superyacht job salaries

After a slight decline in recent years, Captain salaries are back on the rise according to findings in Quay Crew ’s Captain Salary Report 2023 . The detailed report also highlights how the growth of the industry is affecting Captaincy appointments, an increase in competition for placements, and a need for a more structured pay rise structure to foster longevity.

Around 300 Captains responded to the survey across a range of yacht sizes from sub-30 metres to 100 metres plus. In addition to average pay and leave, pay rise and bonus activity, the 21-page report also compares Captain and Chief Officer experience, ticket level, longevity onboard, and comparisons to Quay Crew’s 2020 and 2022 survey findings.

“In our most detailed salary report to date, we have gained an insight into the real-time compensation Captains receive, broken down by yacht size and with several other comparables too,” says Simon Ladbrooke, Captain Consultant at Quay Crew. “A key takeaway this year is that, despite a slight decline in salaries between 2020 and 2022, the average monthly pay is now higher across all size brackets, representing a median 6.75% increase.”

The exact figures, as per the survey findings, illustrate an average monthly salary of €16,243, with €17,105 and €15,518 accounting for the salary of private and charter Captains respectively. In the 100-metre-plus segment, salaries stand at around €20,000 for both private and charter, a €3,500 jump from the 90-99 metre category. At the other end of the scale, wages range between €14,251 to €12,399, which is around €3,000 more than on board sub-39 metre yachts

Time for time rotation has also grown in popularity on all-sized yachts, with the exception of yachts under 39 metres, which are all full-time at present. Full rotation is also increasing and becoming more prevalent on sub-50 metres yachts, with an 11% decline overall in Captains with less than 59 days leave.

In terms of raises, Two-fifths of Captains receive an annual pay rise, although this is not part of their contract. A further 38% receive a 13th-month bonus, but random and unpredictable bonuses appear to be more commonplace across all segments.

Around 70% of Captains have a Master 3000 ticket but are operating on much smaller yachts. “We are increasingly seeing Captains with their Master 3000 taking time out to get their Marshall Islands Unlimited ticket,” adds Ladbrooke. “The most common reason for this is likely to be able to remain with their current employer who is going bigger.”

The survey data reveals the rapid growth of the superyacht sector as one of its primary observations. The average age at which individuals attain Captaincy for the first time has also increased to 32.5 years old and Chief Officers now accumulate more years of experience, indicating a prolonged transition.

“By gathering Chief Officer experience as well as longevity on their current yacht, we can surmise that onboard promotion is on the rise. The average age that someone becomes Captain is now older and the number of years of experience as Chief Officer is higher, suggesting the transition is also taking longer,” says Ladbrooke. This delay is likely influenced by heightened competition in the industry and increased difficulty in making the initial advancement.

Despite these challenges, nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents claim it took them less than six months to secure their first Captain role, which is possibly attributed to onboard promotions and the substantial Chief Officer experience showcased in the survey. “We were very surprised at this statistic as it doesn’t match at all with our experience. Often, Chief Officers are looking for several years before they finally get their opportunity. It’s something we definitely want to explore further in another survey,” says Ladbrooke.

Additionally, more than half of respondents now receive business or first-class flights, dependent on flight duration, indicating a notable increase in this aspect. Flight allowance improves with yacht size, with 49% of Captains receiving Business Class flights as part of their package.

Looking at the overall average salary, Ladbrooke determines that they appear to be reasonable, though a smaller gap between private and private/charter incomes is anticipated. Being a charter Captain is acknowledged as very demanding, with the added complexity of handling various responsibilities, and fostering creativity and adaptability, all while maintaining crew motivation, despite the benefit of tips.

While positive, the frequency of pay raises and bonuses could benefit from a less arbitrary and discretionary approach to enhance Captain longevity. Exactly half of the Captains who responded have more than 10 years’ experience in the role and 32% were Chief Officers for three to five years prior. A third have been Captains on their current yacht for more than three years.

“The key takeaway for us is that, despite many of the respondents being experienced Captains, longevity does need to improve,” says Ladbrooke. “I’d expect at least three years on 60 metres plus yachts, while slightly less is acceptable on 40-59 metre boats as they are usually stepping stones to larger yachts.”

Ladbrooke adds that whilst every size bracket has great things going for it, more often than not, there is some kind of trade-off required. “This is not always a bad thing, and the fact that the market is moving in the right direction in almost every area, from leave and salary to bonuses and retention, sets a good precedent for the future of the sector.”

Working on a superyacht - a complete guide.

Patrick Maflin

Working on a superyacht is an exciting prospect if you’re trying to find a job which offers something very different from your typical 9 to 5 grind.

There are numerous roles you may wish to consider on board a superyacht.

What you choose will depend on your personality, interests, skills and background.

In this complete guide to working on a superyacht we hope that you will gain a better understanding of how to best go about getting a job aboard a superyacht, to hopefully embark on the career of your dreams at sea.

What is a Superyacht?

What does working on a superyacht have to offer, what is the work ethic like, chief engineer, second & third engineer, technical officer, first & second officer, chief steward/stewardess, steward/stewardess, how much are yacht crew paid, what skills & experience are required, do i need any qualifications, how do i find a superyacht job, when are the yachting seasons.

A superyacht is the term used to describe any leisure yacht which is over 24 metres in length.

Nowadays the superyacht industry has become a very popular and lucrative one.

Many people are considering taking up a job on board a superyacht, especially since the hit reality TV series Below Deck gained worldwide popularity.

Yacht crew serving guests

Nowadays there are several superyachts sailing the seas, including motor and sail.

Between them, thousands of crew members are employed to ensure the superyacht is kept in top shape and that the owners and any guests on board are served to the highest standards.

Working within the superyacht industry can prove to be a very rewarding and enticing career for the right types of personality.

It’s certainly a different kind of career than most other traditional jobs.

There’s always a great deal going on on board, and travel and adventure will be an integral part of your life.

As most yachts head to the Mediterranean in the summer months, and the Caribbean in the winter, you will get to experience the sunniest places at the best times of the year.

Moreover, yacht crew are very well paid.

Salaries will vary considerably from one yacht to another, depending on its size and type.

It’s important however to bear in mind that working on a superyacht also means having to work long hours.

But the end result can be rewarding, especially if you spent over 183 days at sea.

This essentially means any income earned should qualify for the seafarers earning deduction , which means you pay zero income tax!

A traditional job will often have a set start and end time every day.

You head off home after a long day, and see your family and unwind for the rest of the evening.

This is certainly not the case with a job in the superyacht industry.

At the end of a long day, you will most likely spend the evening having dinner with the rest of the crew.

And you will generally share a cabin with another crew member, so essentially, you live and work in one place around the clock.

It’s therefore important to keep this in mind, along with your openness to this kind of lifestyle.

You need to have the right personality to be able to live in these conditions, and be very personable to get along well with others.

Thus, a friendly and outgoing personality is a must for a crew member.

You would need to also be a grafter with a great work ethic.

What are the Job Roles Aboard a Superyacht?

Yachts Moored in Marina

The Captain is the person responsible for the safe navigation and operation of the yacht.

The Captain will have full responsibility for the crew members, guests, tenders and toys.

Other responsibilities include money management and budgeting, overseeing the upkeep of the yacht, and managing refitting projects.

The role of the captain will vary depending on the size of the vessel.

The smaller the yacht, the more hands-on the captain will be.

Whereas with bigger yachts, the more the captain’s responsibilities become administrative in nature.

However, this job can be very lucrative and Captains tend to be very well paid .

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the engineering department, and for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

The Chief Engineer will manage engineers, electricians and electronic technical officers, while reporting directly to the Captain.

The Chief Engineer tends to get involved in the daily work revolving around the mechanical and electrical operations of the ship.

They will also ensure that any planned maintenance takes place on time, and that should anything need fixing it is seen to as efficiently as possible.

This is another important role which involves maintaining the mechanical and electrical operations under control.

The second or third engineer will be responsible for small tasks as well as more complex ones, as they will need to see to anything that requires fixing, be it the main engine, an air conditioner or a jet ski.

They will also need to maintain an inventory of important parts required for possible breakages or replacements.

A Technical Officer or Electronic Technical Officer (ETO), as they are sometimes referred to, will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of equipment, including computers, communication equipment, electronic equipment, and audiovisual equipment.

Such equipment will be more advanced and more commonplace the larger the yacht.

The Technical Officer will need to see to the planned maintenance of the various systems.

Practically all superyachts will have a First Officer on board, but bigger vessels will typically employ a Second Officer as well.

The roles of such officers are very similar, and they revolve around the safety of the yacht and the people on board.

Hence their duties will include various safety and administrative tasks, overseeing all deck operations, supervising toys, undertaking bridge watches and keeping charts updated.

The second officer will act as an understudy to the first officer.

The Chief Steward/Stewardess is a high ranking role which involves being responsible for the interior of the yacht, as well as managing the interior staff members.

They will report directly to the Captain.

Some of the tasks that a Chief Steward will need to oversee include cabin preparation, food service, drink service, silver service, flower arranging, organising events and arranging trips.

It’s a very varied and demanding role, but a yacht stewardess earns a good salary .

This is one of the most common entry level jobs in the yacht industry.

The primary role of a steward or stewardess is to ensure that the interior of the yacht is as clean and organised as possible.

This includes cabin preparation and cleaning, maintaining drinks stock, drink preparation and serving, laundry, ironing, plant care and flower arranging, among others.

The Chef will be responsible for everything relating to food - from the purchase of food items and its transportation to the yacht, to its preparation and presentation to the guests on the table.

The chef will also be responsible for the galley, including its organisation and clean-up.

The chef will need to be creative and inventive, to ensure varied and balanced menus.

Only experienced chefs tend to work aboard superyachts, with an impressive CV of having worked in commercial kitchens for several years prior.

So it’s understandable that a yacht chef makes a very good income .

On larger yachts there will also be a sous chef or second chef alongside the head chef.

They will be responsible for culinary duties as well as assisting the chef in various ways.

The sous chef will typically take care of the cooking for the crew members along with any side work required for meal preparations for the yacht owner and their guests.

The Bosun, or as sometimes referred to, the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand will be responsible for maintaining the yacht’s exterior in tip top shape.

They will also be in charge of all the deckhands.

The Bosun’s role includes organising deck operations such as the maintenance of toys and tenders as well as their proper storage, deck maintenance and storage of any supplies required for deck operations.

The Bosun may also undertake bridge watch duties at sea as well as be the main tender driver.

The Deckhand position comprises numerous roles which revolve around cleaning and maintenance.

The deckhands will be responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht in good condition, and this will include tasks such as painting, polishing, varnishing, sanding, finishing and carpentry jobs too.

Deckhands will also drive tenders and toys.

A deckhand will often need to escort guests who will be using toys.

At times deckhands will also help out interior staff in cleaning cabins, serve meals or to provide assistance in the galley.

Whilst this is considered a low level position aboard yachts, many deckhands gain certification before embarking on a yachting career to ensure they are fully skilled to do the job.

Competition for yacht deckhand roles is fierce, so before applying for a deckhand job , it’s best to be prepared first.

The salaries of the various yacht crew members vary from one yacht to another, depending on the type of yacht, and its size.

However, to give you an idea, the average superyacht salary for an entry level job, such as a steward or a deckhand, will typically range between £1,700 to £3,000 per month.

There’s also the addition of tips to consider.

Sometimes during charter season you can earn a substantial amount from tips, which could even end up doubling your salary.

Another thing to consider is that if you are a UK resident, you would benefit from a tax-free salary if you pass your residency test .

You also need to bear in mind that your day-to-day costs would be taken care of if you work on a yacht, as you would also be living on it.

Hence you will not have to pay for water or electricity bills, rent or meals.

Doctor signing ENG1 Medical

As with any job, the more experience and relevant skills you have, the better.

For example, gaining an ENG1 Medical Certificate and the STCW Basic Safety Training certificate are a must.

You may need to also beef up your CV by demonstrating that you have various other skills or training which will come in useful.

You should try dockwalking to get some experience on board a yacht, even if for just a short period of time.

This will help to show that you are willing to work and learn, while also giving you some experience to include in your CV.

You will need to get an ENG1 medical to certify that you are fit to work at sea.

The STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory qualification for a seafarer.

There are numerous other courses which you may opt to follow to be better qualified and improve your chances of getting a job on a superyacht.

For instance, courses about hospitality, flower arranging, food and drink service are ideal for someone who aspires to work as a steward.

Courses on carpentry, powerboats and diving are ideal for anyone wishing to get a job as a deckhand.

The more relevant skills you have, the better your chances are of getting a job as a crew member more quickly and easily.

To get a job on a superyacht, it’s important to start off by preparing yourself well to be a good prospective applicant.

Complete the STCW Basic Safety Training course and get as many relevant qualifications as you can.

You will also need to hold an ENG 1 medical which proves that you are fit to work on board a sea vessel.

Make sure to prepare a good CV to delineate your qualifications and experience to prospective employers.

You may wish to check for jobs through yachting agencies and online job platforms.

It’s also important to understand how the superyacht charter season works to know when is the best time to look for such job openings.

Dockwalking is a great way to find a job as a crew member, or to gain some experience which will improve your chances of getting an even better job in the future.

The superyacht season in the Mediterranean starts off in March and goes on until May.

The winter season in the Caribbean ranges from October to May the following year.

During these periods the demand for new crew increases greatly.

Hence this is the best time to look for a job on a yacht.

By now you should have a good idea of the various careers available on board a superyacht, along with the various responsibilities of the different roles.

We also gave you some tips to help you to get started and how to best go about finding and applying for such a post.

If you’re fortunate enough to land yourself a job working on a superyacht and start earning a salary, speak to us for help in preparing your self-assessment tax returns to ensure you pay the correct amount of income tax.

  • Responsible for the everyday smooth operation of the boat’s interior department, which means being adept in the arts of housekeeping services, laundry procedures and wardrobe management, food and beverage service and cleanup, and entertaining (while maintaining proper etiquette and a high-energy, can-do attitude at all times)
  • Responsible for directing, motivating, and training the lower-ranked stews (2nd, 3rd, and so on)—if any are onboard—which includes the assignment and scheduling of rotational duties and implementing Human Resources (HR) procedures and guidelines
  • Providing valet services and overall guest care. Note: In the hospitality industry, “valet” refers to any employee who performs personal services for guests (and refers to more than just parking cars, which is what we normally associate it with). With regard to yacht stews, valet services include tasks such as packing and unpacking guests’ luggage, caring for their personal items and specialty garments, and even making daily activity arrangements for them.
  • Protecting, maintaining, and caring for valuable interior items and surfaces, such as artwork, silks, china, crystal, linens, fine woodwork, and marbles
  • Creating, implementing, and monitoring a financial planning system that includes accounting and budgeting for interior department needs
  • Creating, implementing, and maintaining an informational management system of interior inventories and maintenance procedures
  • Provisioning to maintain inventory supplies and cover guest usage
  • Collaborating with the executive chef regarding meal service for the guests
  • Creative planning and quality service of theme dinners and occasional guest parties
  • Keeping all interior storage areas organized, orderly, and maintained
  • Crew uniform purchasing
  • Writing and updating all interior manuals and guest-information documents
  • Maintaining and displaying knowledge of international etiquette and protocol
  • Watchkeeping in accordance with the list of responsibilities in the crew mess
  • Exterior-crew support as needed (requiring proficiency with exterior lines and fenders)
  • Selecting, purchasing, and serving fine wines, specialty teas, and cigars, which may require advanced training
  • Planning and managing destination experiences proficiently
  • Assuming full responsibility for certain onboard safety tasks (as assigned by the first mate) in an emergency

Qualifications —A chief stewardess should possess some type of training and experience in the areas of bartending, silver service, cigar service, and wine presentation and service. (The more extensive a stew’s wine knowledge, the better.) STCW BST certification is now mandatory for a chief-stew position, and previous yachting experience on either charter or private vessels is most always required. It is also recommended that you obtain an ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate, or its equivalent. Floral arranging and table decorating skills prove to be an advantage, while an Advanced/Medical First Aid Certificate or a higher degree of medical training is also a major bonus. In fact, many chief stews are now taking courses to become certified as a yacht’s Medical Person-in-Charge. This requires a seven-day course that will satisfy the standards set forth by the STCW Code A-VI/4, 4.4-4.6, offered at many of the marine training schools. While the new PYA Interior-Crew G.U.E.S.T certification is not mandatory (as of July 2013), it is wise to follow the courses outlined and seek out equivalent intermediate and/or advanced interior-crew training classes, if not sign up for the full PYA G.U.E.S.T course modules.

A chief yacht stewardess pays for a floral display delivery.

A Chief Superyacht Stewardess handles the ordering of provisions and other guest amenities for the yacht, which might include things like floral displays that the interior crew is too overwhelmed to handle on its own. While that may sound like an easy task, consider that no matter how many years a yacht stew has been doing this job, he or she will always end up in a new port (sometimes half-way around the world). First, he or she must find a reputable vendor. And not only do fresh flower arrangements need to be ordered, but they must be paid for as well. A chief stew must keep thorough accounting throughout a trip and make sure all vendors and provisioners are paid from the right accounts. Photo Credit: Suki Finnerty of YachtingToday.TV.

STEWARDESS—2nd and 3rd Stews; sometimes referred to as Senior and Junior Stews (Annual Salary Range: $30,000–$54,000+)

Job Function —A 2nd or 3rd stew will carry out his or her duties and responsibilities under the direction and authority of the chief stew and the captain. Individuals holding these positions are responsible for assisting with the maintenance of the interior of the vessel and providing superior hospitable service, in line with the owner’s and guest’s expectations. Hostess skills should be well developed to fully accommodate the owners and their guests while onboard.

  • Maintaining interior housekeeping during a trip (detail cleaning) while also being held largely responsible for guest-cabin care
  • Laundry, ironing, and other wardrobe maintenance tasks for guests and sometimes crew (when guests are onboard)
  • Applying excellent guest service (including silver service) and expert bartending skills when called upon
  • Guest care and valet services
  • Assisting in the creative planning and quality service of theme dinners
  • Assisting with physical product inventories, provisioning, writing and updating checklists, and all other applicable tasks within interior
  • Exterior-crew support as needed

Qualifications —This is an entry-level position; while previous yachting experience is not required, it does bring added salary benefits. STCW BST certification is now mandatory for obtaining even entry-level work on a megayacht. It is also recommended that you obtain an ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate, or its equivalent. Table service, bartending, and cocktail-service experience or equivalent qualification are crucial to landing a job—training and certification recommendations for these can be found in Chapter 7 of The Insiders’ Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess. While the new PYA Interior-Crew G.U.E.S.T certification is not mandatory (as of July 2013), it is wise to follow the courses outlined and seek out equivalent introductory interior-crew training classes, if not sign up for the full PYA G.U.E.S.T introduction modules.

Dual Positions

On smaller and midsize vessels, where not as many crewmembers are needed (nor is there room for them), the core crew positions listed in the last section are often fused into what I call “dual positions.” An individual hired into such a position will assume a dual role and be expected to wear more than one “hat” during the course of a day.

Here are some examples:

  • Deckhand-Stew
  • 2nd Engineer-Deckhand
  • Captain-Engineer
  • Stew-Purser

Steward/ess Salaries

According to Dockwalk’s annual Crew Salary Survey in September 2013 , steward/esses are making a wide variety of salaries these days, and the amount of experience and training they have makes a difference. Of course, the size of the yachts will also be a factor. Compensation for chief stews runs anywhere from $3,450 to $5,650 a month on smaller yachts (80 to 140 feet) to $5,200 to $8,000 a month on yachts over 140 feet. It is very common now to see $65K and $70K salaries, or even $90K+ on the much larger vessels. Salaries for entry-level yacht stewardesses start out between $30K–$43K a year, or $2,500–$3,600 a month.

Base salaries for stewardesses, when compared with those of food and beverage servers, cabin stews, and laundry staff on cruise ships, are slightly higher. But where the potential income differences become dramatic is when you consider the tips one can earn working on luxury charter yachts, or the bonuses and perks afforded the crew on solely private yachts.

Here is a table that sums up salary ranges for the various stew roles within the interior department on a megayacht / superyacht:

Crew salary information taken from various online and agency sources and cross-checked against Dockwalk’s annual Crew Salary Survey, September 2012.

While annual salary guidelines are given above, again, keep in mind that the ranges are wide because salaries will depend on a variety of factors, including the size of the yacht, the use of the yacht (private or charter), the style of boat (power or sail), and what other benefits are available to the crew, such as insurance packages or education reimbursement. Salaries may also vary depending on the specific qualifications of a crewmember, the amount of time the owner and guests use the vessel, and what itinerary will be traveled. Furthermore (and I cannot emphasize this enough), the compensation ranges listed are base salaries and do not reflect tips, if those are applicable.

Yacht Crew Have Got 99 Problems, But Living Expenses Ain’t One of Them

The first thing people always say after I give them the above salary figures: “Gee, is that all? I thought you said it paid well?” And someone will always add, “Oh, well I can get paid that same amount to take an entry-level office job.”

But here’s the kicker: no expenses.

Most all positions on luxury yachts require you to live aboard and travel with the vessel, and therefore, your room and board are completely covered. It is customary and expected that everything you need on a daily basis is provided by the yacht owner—your meals, your uniforms, laundry detergent, linens, and on most boats, even your personal hygiene products, such as soap and toothpaste. Meanwhile, your earnings automatically go into your bank account.

What other job can you take where, at the end of the year, you have nearly your entire salary sitting in your bank account, relatively untouched? Most people in other industries are lucky if they save 1/10 of the amount they earn in a year. Why? Because they are paying rent and utilities, buying and maintaining cars, and purchasing all the clothes they wear to work each day. And let’s not forget groceries.

How much do Stewardesses and Deckhands get paid?

  • How much do Stewardesses and Deckhands g...

This is perhaps one of the most common questions we’re asked here at Flying Fish about Superyacht jobs in Europe!

We’ve mentioned it on several occasions, but aside from getting the chance to travel the world and make amazing friends for life, the pay is perhaps one of the best parts about working on a Superyacht.

In short, a Superyacht Deckhand or Stewardess can expect to be paid between €2,000 to €3,500 per month (or £1650.23 to £2887.90 at the time of writing), though typically, this will be around €2,500.

However, this is not always the case on every Superyacht, and your salary will usually depend on a variety of different factors. Read on to find out more…

How much you get paid as a Stewardess or Deckhand depends on:

1. the yacht’s crew budget.

Every yacht will belong to a sole owner, or a management company. Whoever is in charge will agree on a specific budget for the Captain to use when hiring a crew.

As a result, depending on that budget and the size and calibre of crew that is needed to run the Superyacht successfully, there might be some small variations in your pay as a Stewardess or Deckhand.

2. The size of the yacht you’re working on

There are lots of different types and sizes of Superyacht , and this will ultimately affect how much you get paid.

If you’re working on a Superyacht that’s between 20m and 60m, you can probably expect to receive the standard salary outlined above (€2,000 to €3,500 per month).

However, on a larger yacht (between 60m and 80m+), there’ll be a lot more work to do; for a Deckhand, for example, more water sports toys to wash down and larger windows to clean, and for a Stewardess, more guests to take care of.

This means you can expect to be paid a greater amount; more specifically, around €3,000+.

3. Whether you work on a Charter or Private yacht.

In the Superyacht world, it’s actually customary for charter guests to tip the crew! This tip is normally around 10% of the charter fee, so you can expect a reasonable jump in your pay packet at the end of the month.

Private Superyacht jobs in Europe don’t guarantee these kinds of tips, however; so, you’ll need to up your game and go the extra mile in your day-to-say work for that bit of extra cash!

4. Your level of experience

Understandably, more experienced Superyacht Stewardesses and Deckhands will get paid more for their work than junior Stewardesses and Deckhands.

As an experienced Stewardess or Deckhand, you can expect to earn a salary of €2,800-€3,000 (£2310.32-£2475.34 at the time of writing), plus tips.

This will also scale up and down depending on the size of the yacht; for example, an experienced Stewardess or Deckhand will earn €3,500 to €4,500+ (£2887.90-£3713.02) on a 60m-80m Superyacht.

There are additional monetary benefits to working on a Superyacht, too…

Primarily, that your food and accommodation will all be included within your contract, as you’ll be living on board the Superyacht.

Plus, as working Superyacht jobs in Europe means it’s very likely that you’ll be out of the UK for a significant amount of time; so, you won’t need to pay income tax for this wage.

This means that all your hard-earned money can be spent on whatever you like; whether that’s exploring the parts of the world you’re visiting on your days off, or investing in further Superyacht training to propel your wages and career even further!

One of the best ways to get your Superyacht salary off to a good start by completing a relevant Superyacht training course.

This is because, while you can be hired for Superyacht jobs in Europe without experience, training will give you the extra knowledge, qualifications and practical skills you need to start earning more money more quickly.

It also means you’ll be more likely to get work faster, and therefore start earning sooner!

Here at Flying Fish, we run a dedicated Superyacht Deckhand course and Superyacht Stewardess course for this very reason. Get in touch with us to find out more and book your place on our next available course dates!

Chief Officer salary survey 2023 26 September 2023

chief officer chief officer salary survey crew salary survey superyacht salaries

A survey of over 100 Chief Officers has uncovered the latest trends in salary, leave and bonus packages for Chief Officers working onboard 40m to 100m+ superyachts.

The analysis, carried out by crew recruitment agency, Quay Crew, contains detailed comparisons between yacht size and usage and also explores whether length of time in the role and ticket level has an impact.

The key findings are:

  • The current average salary across all yacht sizes for a Chief Officer is €8,475, with solely private yachts paying 11% more than private/charter yachts.
  • 72.5% are time for time rotational roles.
  • Over half (54%) get annual pay rises, but only 16% are contractual, while 30% are inconsistent and unpredictable.
  • The most common pay rise amount when given is between 2.1 and 5% of their previous salary (43%).
  • Over half of Chief Officers receive a 13th-month bonus while 21% get random and unpredictable bonuses. 14% get no bonus at all.
  • A third have been in the role between 1 and 3 years, followed by 24% who have 5 to 7 years’ experience. Just 12% have more than 7 years’ experience as a Chief Officer.
  • 47% hold a Master Unlimited or Master 3000 ticket at the highest level, while the same amount have achieved Chief Mate 3000 or Chief Mate Unlimited at the highest level.
  • The average age of a Chief Officer is 30 – although the age that people first become a Chief Officer has increased by around 18 months.

chief officer salary 1

Tom Rose, Officer Consultant and Team Leader at Quay Crew, commented:

“As with any salary survey in any industry, there are always exceptions and this is no different in yachting. There are clearly some outliers across all yacht size brackets which can skew the averages somewhat.

“However overall, the average salary of €8,475 is extremely healthy and the fact that almost three-quarters of the Chief Officers surveyed are receiving time for time rotation is also very positive.

“Having said that, these findings are not necessarily indicative of the jobs being recruited for of late, with a shortage of rotational roles becoming available. This is certainly down to Chief Officers committing to those yachts offering such packages and staying onboard long-term.

“When comparing private only and private/charter yachts, Chief Officers are two-thirds more likely to receive a contractual annual pay rise onboard a private yacht compared to those that charter as well.

“Drilling down into yacht size comparisons, the biggest salary uplift is from a 60-69m and 70-79m yacht (10%). Salaries then drop 4% drop when Chief Officers step up to 80-89m but all get 3:1 or time for time rotation whereas one in five roles onboard 70-79m are full time.

“One interesting observation is that the average age crew are taking on their first Chief Officer role is going up. This could be that crew are joining the industry later or that there are limited progression opportunities onboard some yachts to step up.”

chief officer salary 2

Tim Clarke, Director at Quay Crew, commented:

“One statistic that leaps out at us is that over a third (34%) of Chief Officers surveyed have been in the role for more than five years without stepping up to Captain. Anecdotally, getting your first drive position is the most challenging, so while this report highlights some average packages, it’s arguably more important to find a well-run boat that will support your goals.

Longevity is key, as is building a good relationship with the Captain, owner and management company, if applicable. Skipping jobs to earn a couple of hundred Euros more may not benefit your career in the long term.

Generally speaking, Chief Officer jobs are good at the moment, but if you want to know what you need to do to make the transition to Captain as easy as possible, we’d be happy to advise.”

I took a $13,000 pay cut to work as a deckhand on a superyacht. I don't regret it as it gave me a career I can grow in.

  • Nathan Marx was a quality controller in South Africa but decided to switch to becoming a superyacht deckhand.
  • Marx said the job has more growth potential than his previous job and helped him develop more meaningful relationships.
  • Working around the wealthy has shown Marx that success is attainable and wealth doesn't change people's core natures.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nathan Marx, a deckhand for a superyacht. It has been edited for length and clarity.

From 2020 to the end of 2023, I was a quality controller at an engineering company that made mining machinery in South Africa, I managed 132 employees and earned 3,000 euros, around $3,333 a month.

My future was pretty secure at the company, but I lacked that sense of adventure and felt like there was more to life than working away every day and not seeing the world as I would like.

I knew some friends who had entered the yachting industry since leaving school, and it looked very intriguing and adventurous.

My previous job had long hours and was hard work, which made me comfortable stepping into the yachting industry.

When I started working on deckhand certification courses in January this year, I was told about these massive yachting hubs where it'd be easier to find work opportunities because they were saturated with boats.

Related stories

One of those was Antibes, France. I moved there in May this year and traveled the entire coastline of the south of France, dock walking daily, exploring the vessels, and putting myself out there to catch the right opportunity.

I started documenting my job search on TikTok on the day I left for France. I was very nervous that I didn't have a job yet, and I wanted to stand out and get a step ahead in my job search. I love expressing myself through video creation, so the two went hand in hand.

I met this girl who works on this vessel docked in Monaco for the season. She saw my videos, and we got to know each other. I was the first person she contacted when they needed a deckhand. So it's all about getting in front of the right people's eyes.

My role on the yacht is to ensure the boat's exterior is pristine. Everything regarding the exterior, from the hull to the deck, to any furniture outside, is my responsibility to ensure that it is presentable for guests. I also help with basic watchkeeping when the yacht is out at sea.

Now, three months in, I'm at the bottom of the food chain and I'm earning 1,000 euros less every month than I did back in South Africa. But this career has room for growth and will keep me above the ceiling that I reached in South Africa in my management job.

One thing I realized working on yachts is that you live in the same space as your coworkers. If something bothers you about a person and you keep quiet, it builds within you and just sours the relationship on board. You have to foster a relationship with them that is a lot more fruitful than a normal employee would.

I think I also value that because not only am I getting to travel or experience all these crazy things that normal people in a 9-to-5 usually won't, but I'm also meeting people and creating connections with them that'll last a lifetime instead. That real connection with people also gives me satisfaction.

Having a life outside this industry might be challenging because anything can happen at the last minute. You might have time to spare one moment, but you're expecting guests the next, and you're suddenly back to work for a week. So whatever you have planned just needs to fall on the back burner.

But the maritime industry here sets out work-life balance very well, and I think that's also one of the things that drew me to the yachting industry because my previous job did not value my personal life. So, after the hard work, I get a lot of off time, and I have time to go and experience things and step off.

One of my favorite places I visited was a beautiful little town on a hill with an absurd history called Bonifacio, on the island of Corsica, France. We also had the privilege of hiking up into the old city, an amazing experience I don't think I would've had otherwise if I wasn't into the yachting industry.

I once spoke to a person who's been in the industry for around nine years. He told me about chartering Will Smith and all these big A-list star names, which sounded so enticing. I haven't had any of those or any experiences like that, but the individuals we meet on this boat are very high-net-worth because renting the vessel I work on costs about 78,000 euros a week.

We once had a client with 3.2 million Instagram followers on board and had a normal conversation with her. It was humbling to me because you always think these people will be different or special in some way, but at the end of the day, they're just normal people. She never mentioned anything about her success once. It was so normal that I was surprised.

It's very motivating to be surrounded by individuals like that because they make you feel that their success is possible for you, too.

The superyacht industry is unlike other luxury sectors. The places people visit are so unique that not everyone gets to see them. The cost involved is also quite exorbitant, with some yachts going for 500,000 euros a week. So, the client has a level of expectation of luxury they want to receive, and you have to live up to very high standards that no other luxury industry has.

My career can progress from here in many ways, and I'm trying to explore all those avenues. But the yachting industry is a tight-knit community that's made me very happy over the past few months, so I'll stay for as long as possible.

Thomas Legner ist General Manager auf The World.

Also muss alles, was man geplant hat, zurückgestellt werden.
