Award Winning ‘Wildsights Cruises’ - Monkey Mia - Shark Bay

Shark Bay is brimming with a huge variety of wildlife. All year round there are dolphins, dugongs and huge loggerhead and green turtles. In the warmer months they’re joined by sea snakes, sharks (our largest a 4.5 metre tiger shark), stingrays, flying fish and the weird long tom, a fish that skips across the sea. Very rare highlights are manta rays & whales

The best way to see this magnificent variety is on a superb cruise with Australia's only purist wildlife sailing specialist, ‘Wildsights Cruises’ aboard Monkey Mia’s nature boat, the internationally famous, awesome, 60’(18m) sailing catamaran, Shotover (yes there’s a toilet on board).

You can laze about and relax, or join in the fun of helping sail one of Australia's ocean racing legends. Lounge on a bean bag under the back deck shade awning. Soak up the sun on the huge trampoline nets. Chat with the crew, they know their stuff, including how to identify the dolphins for you. You'll learn how dolphins know who's around without seeing them, how they hunt with sound and live with sharks.

Your skippers have been here more than 25 years, with our licence to enter the world's most important, dolphin and tiger shark behavioural research site and the first Dugong Interaction Licence in Western Australia with restricted access to the Dugong Management Zone at Monkey Mia, you’ll be taken to the best spots to get great shots.

You'll be on an awesome wildlife cruise in one of the world's most important nature research sites, where scientists come from all over the globe to unravel the mysteries of the underwater world by putting:

  • video cameras on turtles
  • satellite tags on sharks
  • paint on dugong
  • tags on tiger sharks
  • drones to find stingrays
  • caution to sample sea snakes
  • traps to capture, count and release fish
  • digital cameras to catalogue dolphin fins
  • cages to monitor seabed development

Thanks to our association with the scientists you'll discover the relationships between the animals and their environment, the reason for the behaviour you're seeing, the facts behind myths, some wacky secrets.

Since we first commenced operation we’ve had the world’s leading dolphin and dugong behavioural scientists as advisors to ensure interactions are done in the best manner for the animals. This resulted in Shotover ’s cruises being the only cruises in the world scientifically proven to not have an effect on the dolphins.

Take this opportunity to lie back and relax or join in the fun of helping sail the boat. Experience the exhilaration of freedom under silent sail. Head off with the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin, a dash of salt spray, a smile on your face and oceans of wildlife.

You have a choice of fabulous cruises, including the world's first daily, scheduled ‘mermaid' (dugong) watching cruise and Australia’s Last Sunset Cruise. You’ll be awed by this spectacular, deserted piece of paradise, where Nature overwhelms.

We are Australia's first marine wildlife cruises to hold Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation and the first business in the region to become an Accredited Tourism Business.

  • Shotover is primarily wind and solar powered and has virtually eliminated noise, air and water pollution, so your enjoyment isn’t affecting the animals or the planet.
  • Through space-age technology, the fridge is actually cooled by the sun!
  • The chemical-free toilet uses seawater and solar electricity to render toilet-waste bacteria-free.
  • Our safe, Australian-made, cleaning products are made from sustainable, natural ingredients, which are phosphate and nitrate free and not tested on animals.
  • We conserve fossil fuel by using extremely efficient, high-tech propellers coupled with low horsepower engines.
  • Our seldom used, small engines (approx 70hp compared with our competitor’s approx 570hp) average less than 2 litres of fuel per cruise
  • Fossil fuel is further conserved by technologically extending our oil changes to yearly.
  • Storing electricity in gel batteries eliminates the gassing and disposal problems of lead/acid batteries.

Francois Peron National Park Tour

Shark Bay's World Heritage Area is outstanding on a global scale, on par with some of the most famous natural treasures on earth.

To be listed for United Nations' World Heritage an area needs to meet only one of four criteria. Of the 166 Natural World Heritage sites on our planet, only 19 meet all of the criteria, among these sites are the Galapagos Islands, the Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park and Shark Bay. Now you can discover the secrets of this unique and awesome wilderness.

shark bay 4wd tour

Enjoy a highly personalised (maximum 6 guests), fair dinkum, off-road experience with a local guide in an air conditioned rugged 4WD vehicle. Travel through an untouched, spectacular, special piece of earth, right where Outback Australia meets the coast. Venture into the outback bush, down wild tracks, over rolling red sand dunes, through dense Acacia shrub-lands, along magnificent bluffs and deserted beaches.

You'll be knocked-out by stunning scenery, wildlife and endless beaches (a photographers delight). You'll be amazed to learn that unimpressive vegetation is often food or medicine. You'll discover the survival secrets of how to navigate by the sun; find water and bush tucker.

It's a hell of a way to discover the cultural history of Shark Bay and it's sensational scenery, fascinating plants and animals as well as learn bush survival skills. On tour some of the stunning trees you'll meet are the life-saving Kurrajong tree, the endangered Sandalwood tree and the Acacia tree in it's many guises.

This was sheep country. Yet it's an area of only seasonal grass. You'll find out how the sheep survived. You'll also learn the ingenious method used to bring the sheep in for shearing.

Year round Shark Bay teems with birds. In September migratory birds return from the Northern Hemisphere boost numbers. Our best count in one tour, is 39 different species.

July, August and September are wildflower months and Shark Bay has the longest wildflower season in the state. In full bloom the place looks as if it has been doused with a tin of rainbow paint.

The warmer months bring out the reptiles – monitors, geckos, skinks, dragons and the fabulous Thorny Devil. See the Francois Peron Peninsula on a fascinating, highly personalised tour (maximum 6 guests), backed by your unconditional, 100% money-back guarantee, "Love it or it's free"

Trip Advisor

We thoroughly enjoyed our morning on the water. Liam was knowledgeable and funny and Charlotte was friendly & helpful. Highly recommended!

Fantastic helpful staff. Skipper has a wicked sense of humor. Saw dugon, dolphins, turtle great trip.

Catamaran was well appointed for a short cruise. Crew were very helpful. Free sunset cruise was a nice added bonus.

The crew are very knowledgeable about the area and provide a fun and educational commentary about the area and the abundance of wildlife. Their passion and dedication is evident in their conservation activities. Funds from the cruise go to high license fees and their contribution to helping maintain the dugong population in this pristine remote area. It’s a must for people of all ages.

We booked two trips. The sunset trip was amazing! A 2.5h Day trip was relaxing, we saw three groups of dolphins and learn a lot about wildlife.

What a wonderful way to spend both a morning and an evening! We had the most incredible time watching the dugongs and dolphins I can’t believe how much I learnt. We were so impressed by our captain Liam and his passion for the environment it is truly inspiring.

Great experience on both the cruises with the sunset one being the highlight of our holiday. The crew on both days were friendly and accommodating. Will definitely recommend to family and friends. Thank you Greg and team!!!

Absolutely magical day, we saw multiple dolphins, dugongs, turtles and shovel-nose rays! The cruise was so informative on the history of the bay, and the animals within it.

Commentary was excellent and we saw plenty of wildlife. Host was knowledgeable and I learnt a lot about dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles and sea birds. Got some wonderful photos.

Ultimate guide to Shark Bay

Travel & Touring  |  WA Destinations

By: Fleur Bainger

Sticking like a two-finger peace sign out the side of WA, is the World Heritage-listed area of Shark Bay.

A delight for nature-lovers, the area is riddled with marine life, from inquisitive dolphins and laid-back dugongs, to fine eating fish and - as the name suggests - 28 shark species. (Fret not though, no fatalities have ever been recorded).

Shark Bay encapsulates the town of Denham, the nearby communities of Monkey Mia and Hamelin Pool, as well as the jaw-droppingly beautiful national parks Francois Peron and Dirk Hartog.

With all that to explore, it’s time to start planning an escape to the westernmost point of Australia – Shark Bay has got it all.

At a glance

Distance from Perth 822 kilometres, or 9-10 hours' drive to Denham; 25 kilometres more to Monkey Mia
Why go? To see friendly bottlenose dolphins, body roll down red sand dunes, hook fantastic eating fish, put your 4WD through its paces and walk on a beach made entirely of shells.
When to go : Balmy days, gentle breeze, locals call this the best time to visit; ideal for swimming, boat cruising, camping, stargazing.
: Sunny days in the mid-20s, cold nights hovering around 10 degrees and crisp morning winds; suited to kayaking, paddle boarding and hiking; wildflowers bloom from Aug-Oct; whales visit Aug-Sep.
: High temps, dry, very windy days; perfect for windsurfing and kiteboarding.
How long to stay Spending five days to a week will give you enough time to tick everything off. Consider splitting your stay between Denham and Monkey Mia; Denham for day trips and adventure, Monkey Mia for staying-put, relaxation and play.
Need to know

About 55 kilometres from the Shark Bay turn-off is the Billabong Roadhouse - fill your tank here for some of the cheapest fuel in the state. Otherwise, the petrol station at Denham is fairly priced. Expect your phone signal to waver, even Telstra - beyond residential areas it often cuts out entirely. Denham has two small, independent supermarkets and a bakery doing fresh loaves, early breakfast and lunch; Monkey Mia has a mini mart. Denham beach is pet-friendly but pets are not allowed in any national parks in Shark Bay. Dogs must be on leads at all times when in the Monkey Mia Reserve and are excluded from the dolphin interaction zone. Fees apply for entry into many of Shark Bay’s national parks and reserves.

Fast facts : 946 people in Denham
: Nhanda, Malgana and Yingkarta
Insider tip Seek out art studio café, The Little Shop Well Worth a Visit, at the western end of Denham’s main street, Knight Terrace. There’s no name on the white, set-back house, just a red wheelbarrow and sign saying ‘open’. Café tables are adorned with knitting gear and bubble-blowing containers for those who fancy. Stay for a $5 coffee (it comes with a complimentary chocolate), delivered by octogenarian owner and resident potter, Mehalah.

Top things to see and do

See the red dunes of Big Lagoon with an Aboriginal guide

The inundated gypsum claypan known as Big Lagoon is home to Shark Bay’s most vibrant colours. Terracotta dunes meet white sand and crystalline, turquoise water. Local Yamatji-Malgana man, Darren “Capes” Capewell leads cultural kayaking tours across the lagoon, stopping at a seagull nesting site and kangaroo-dug waterholes, before encouraging body-rolls down the dunes. End the Wula Gura Nyinda eco adventure with local mullet on the barbeque. Big Lagoon also has good camping facilities, including raised tent decks.

Aerial of red cliffs and water

Visit a remote coffee van

Stop in at Little Lagoon and grab a hot drink from the cute Coffee Mia coffee van. Its outdoor setting of patterned rugs, covered milk crate stools and upbeat tunes is delightfully unexpected. They do espresso, teas, chai, hot chocolate and toasties as well as kayak and paddleboard hire until noon most days. Stonefish lurk in Little Lagoon, so if you want to enjoy the water, wear wading shoes and shuffle to avoid a painful sting.

Gaze over endless water at Eagle Bluff

As far as ocean lookouts go, Eagle Bluff is rather impressive. A steel walking platform edges a cliff, delivering views of aquamarine water edging a small island and salmon-pink sandy bluffs, while the seagrass-rich navy ocean extends to the horizon. It’s 20 kilometres from Denham.

Splurge on a scenic flight

Seeing the dramatic colours of Shark Bay from the air is worth raiding your pockets for. Take a scenic flight with Shark Bay Aviation over the reds, whites and blues of Big Lagoon and Francois Peron National Park, or be wowed by the Zuydorp Cliffs and the southern end of Dirk Hartog Island, or go all out on a trip that wraps in all that, plus Steep Point and Cape Inscription.

See sharks fed at Ocean Park Aquarium

Far from a theme-park experience, education-focused Ocean Park Aquarium is home to open tanks and glassy displays where local sea life such as turtles, sea snakes, stone fish and stingrays are exhibited and rescue creatures are rehabilitated. The main drawcard is the daily shark feeding, which happens at the end of every guided, hour-long tour, though locals also rave about the coffee (the restaurant’s open kebab, with lamb sourced from a local station, is also pretty good). The park is 10 kilometres out of Denham.

Relax aboard a sunset cruise at Monkey Mia

As the sun paints Shark Bay’s skies crimson, where better to watch it than on a glamorous catamaran? Join a sunset cruise and chances are, you’ll also spot the region’s marine life, be it dolphins, dugongs, turtles, sharks or even sea snakes. Day cruises are also available.

Walk along Shell Beach and eyeball the stromatolites

Let’s be honest: visually, Shell Beach has wow-factor, with its 10-metre deep, button-sized white cockle shells stretching for 60 kilometres. Plus, the water in the bay is so hyper-saline, you float. But learn a little about the nearby Hamelin Pool’s famed stromatolites and you’ll have a whole new appreciation for these cauliflower-like, underwater stumps. The still-living stromatolites in the Marine Nature Reserve are estimated to be 3,000 years old. Their predecessors, some 3.5 billion years back, are believed to be responsible for kick-starting life on Earth: when the micro-organisms they’re made up of released oxygen, it created conditions for more complex life forms to evolve. Seen through informed eyes, the stromatolites are pretty amazing. They’re found along a 200-metre boardwalk beside Hamelin Pool Caravan Park.

Image of stromatolites

Watch the dolphins at Monkey Mia

This is the year-round hook that pulls most visitors to Shark Bay. Since the 60’s, wild dolphins have been visiting the shallows at Monkey Mia’s main beach, originally fed by a fisherman’s wife. Now, park rangers offer fish to the cetaceans while providing an informative, conservation-oriented talk to onlookers. Usually, less than a handful of dolphins come to shore around 7:30am, 8:30am and 9:30am, although they may be seen throughout the day; make sure you look beyond the interaction area as you may spot pods fishing in the deep or a mother and calf playing only 20 metres out. We recommend watching the interaction from the jetty, where elevated views are aided by having the sun at your back; beach viewers tend to endure sun-glare and crowding. A Monkey Mia day permit includes the dolphin experience.

Visit Dirk Hartog Island

Take the Steep Point barge across to Dirk Hartog Island - a raw, rugged isle inhabited by a family of five, who run an eco lodge, ocean villa and homestead campground, as well as tours. Get fully cared for, opt for supported camping or properly rough it at any of the island’s ultra-basic national park campsites. Strap in for a self-led 4WD adventure through empty dunes, to blowholes, past secluded beaches and fishing hotspots to Cape Inscription at the isle’s far tip, where Dutch merchant sailor Dirk Hartog marked his arrival more than 400 years ago.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dirk Hartog Island (@dirkhartogisland) on Aug 22, 2017 at 3:45pm PDT

Red emperor, pink snapper, mackerel, squid and more - Shark Bay is fishing heaven. There are numerous spots to throw in a line for recreational fishers, just be sure to check marine protection zones before baiting up. Back in your boat at Denham or Monkey Mia’s ramps (with more options for smaller boats), or alternately, join a charter boat with locals guiding you to top eating fish.

4WD adventure into Francois Peron National Park

Your first stop in the national park is Peron Homestead Precinct (accessible by 2WD). It’s a 1900’s sheep station turned self-exploratory heritage site that’s best known for its spring-fed outdoor hot tub (currently closed due to Covid-19). Funny aside: the homestead’s shearing shed was relocated there from Denham after too many shearers were distracted by the town pub. If you have a 4WD, let down your tyres at the deflating station, then continue on to Big Lagoon and Cape Peron, with both sites equipped with red sand, picnic tables and bush toilets. Watch for marine life from Skipjack Point Lookout or follow the 1.5-kilometre clifftop Wanamalu Walk Trail from Skipjack to Cape Peron.

What to pack

In summer, you can get away with shorts, t-shirts and plenty of sunscreen; autumn and spring are much the same, but pack a jumper for nights. In winter, sunshine gives way to chilly evenings, so if you’re camping, bring plenty of warm bedding and wear layers beneath a heavy jacket and beanie. The wind keeps most mozzies away but bring spray for sandflies.

Getting around

You’ll need a car to get around Shark Bay - 2WD is fine but a 4WD is necessary to explore Dirk Hartog Island and Francois Peron National Park (although you can reach Peron Homestead Precinct in a 2WD). If you’re basing yourself in Denham or Monkey Mia, everything along the waterfront is walkable. If you fly from Perth, there’s car (and boat) hire available at the airport.

Travelling safely

Emus are a constant threat on Shark Bay’s roads, and at low light, kangaroos also emerge, so travel slowly - or not at all - during sundown and dawn. Adhere to local advice on 4WD tracks and make use of the tyre deflating and re-inflating equipment just outside Peron Homestead before you venture into Francois Peron National Park. Sail among sharks and dugongs

{ 0 Comments }

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shark Bay has the largest and richest area of seagrass meadows in the world. This makes it home to the world’s largest population of dugongs, as well as a thriving population of sharks, turtles, whales, rays and dolphins. From your base in Denham, visit natural attractions like Shell Beach and the stomatolites in Hamelin Pool, and pop over to Monkey Mia to see dolphins swim off the beach. Don’t miss the last sunset on the continent as you sail the turquoise waters on a catamaran.

Length of Trip : 2-4 days, depending on what you plan to get up to.

Cost : Click here for the latest Monkey Mia sailing cruise prices with Wildsights

Best time to go : June to October

Wheelchair friendly : Contact operator to make arrangements

Family friendly : Yes

Where to eat : We enjoyed a couple great meals at the iconic Old Pub in Denham , attached to the Shark Bay Hotel.

Official Site : Visit Shark Bay Wildsights Wildlife Sailing Cruises

Where to Stay : We had a blast at The Shark Bay Hotel , a friendly local institution steps away from the beach, groceries and the best pub in Denham.

Getting There : Shark Bay is about a 9 and half hour drive from Perth. There is a local airport located 8km from Denham, and around 16km from Monkey Mia on the Monkey Mia Road, with several flights a week from Perth and also Exmouth.

Note from Robin : Although the road north is long, flat and hardly busy, watch out for some overzealous cops (we got the only speeding fine on our whole trip outside of Binnu, and we weren't even speeding). Shell Beach is remarkable, well worth the stop. The stars in this part of the world are fantastic. We found the dolphin encounter in Monkey Mia disappointing, which has everything to do with expectations and nothing to do with the dolphins. Definitely worth stopping at the Ocean Park Aquarium, especially if you're with kids. The living is fine on a morning or sunset sailing cruise in Shark Bay, and so are the dugongs!

Reviews from Google

September 2023

My husband and I went on the snorkeling trip to Egmont yesterday. We had a great time. The snorkeling spot they picked was great. Really was an enjoyable day and I would recommend the trip to friends. Professional, safe, fun...

This is our 2nd trip with this crew. Our family is from Iowa and this team never disappoints. So much to see and do. Highly recommended. Thanks for the great experience.

This was a great first time experience snorkeling! The captain extended our tour until we were able to see the dolphins. He is very knowledgeable and would even help people getting shells😁

Great time! The captain was fun, engaging, and had so much knowledge about the island and Florida! Definitely recommend!

Overall best snorkeling trip I have been on, great for anyone, beginners and couples especially. Boat trip was enjoyable and the island/snork. spot was much less busy than expected. John was awesome and on point, as well as being very knowledgeable and nice.

My wife and I took a trip with Captain John this past Saturday and had a wonderful time. The ruins of the gun batteries were so cool to scuba dive around, the fish were out in force, and the water temperature was perfect. Captain John was not only entertaining but also very knowledgeable about the surrounding shores and their histories.

We had a great time and getting to see the tortoises and dolphins were some of the highlights of our trip. We would highly recommend you check them out if you are thinking about snorkeling in this area!

Magnet: A 48m floating New York loft with the capability of an extreme explorer

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Panama to Australia on one tank of fuel? Yes you can. Built for adventure, 48 metre catamaran Magnet has economy, power and space for all kinds of fun. BOAT takes a look inside...

Michael Vogelsang, the captain of Magnet , has seen a thing or two in his career and is not easily impressed. But when he got a first glimpse of his new charge at the Metal Shark yard in Franklin, Louisiana, at the end of a crisp and sunny winter day, he was blown away. “We flew into Lafayette, took a nice car ride and got in at dusk into Franklin; [ Magnet ] was silhouetted by the sun, and I just kind of went, Wow!” he recalls. It’s easy to see why. During a rare stint at a dock in Miami Beach, as the crew prepare for a trip to the Bahamas, I go to look at the catamaran I have chased for a couple of years after hearing various rumours of its construction. A catamaran of this magnitude, coming out of a shipyard in rural Louisiana known for its speedy, reliable navy craft – this I had to see. And Magnet does not disappoint.

The spaces on board are unrivalled for a sub-50-metre yacht, with its beam of 11.8 metres, 3.6 metres clearance over the water thanks to a deep tunnel between two narrow hulls with near-vertical entry, a hydraulic platform to haul the 5.4 metres Novurania RIB tender, three decks with high ceilings, large windows and an open layout, plus a sundeck. It can – and has – welcomed up to 120 guests for a dockside party.

Magnet , Metal Shark’s first M48, results from the vision of the boat’s owner, George Wallner, an experienced and hands-on yachtsman who does not like to spend time in marinas if he can avoid it. What he had in mind was a modern New York loft with the capability of an extreme explorer – one that could go slow and steady over long distances and outrun bad weather.

On that latter count, it did not take long for the boat to be put to the test. In the dog days of summer 2020, as two storms built over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and threatened the Louisiana coast, he made up his mind that the time was up.

“I called the yard and I said, ‘Finished or not, we need to take the boat,’” he says. “We got everything ready and just took off and went to Corpus Christi [in Texas]. It was not a delivery, it was more like an escape,” he says with his dry sense of humour. From Texas, it was a straight shot across the gulf to Key West, with a stop in the Tortugas for a dive, and up to Miami, a 1,000-plus-nautical-mile shakedown cruise, with sprints at 20 knots.

It was only Magnet’ s first brush with tropical weather during an active hurricane season. Three months later, Magnet had to outrun a storm that tracked dangerously close to Miami’s shores. “We went to Cape Canaveral, 120 miles up the coast; it got rough, that gave us our first taste of how a catamaran handles rough seas,” Volgelsang says.

“You see these stools?” asks the owner, pointing to a row of six black seats with backrests perched on stainless-steel feet in the boat’s huge open salon. “We were out in the Bahamas for a month and prior to that when we went to Cape Canaveral, these things never got tied down, they never fell over. We had seas that were bending the stanchions.”

The motion he observes is quite different from his other boat, a 28.6 metre Lyman Morse . “A catamaran does not roll like a monohull, it’s about half as much of a roll but the movement is more abrupt; it has a different kind of motion, and it takes some getting used to,” the owner says. To compensate for the motion in different directions, the boat has a stabilising system by Naiad. “We have Active Ride Control, it’s these big trim tabs that oppose the pitching and, to some extent, the rolling. The other thing is there is not much flare in these bows. The idea with this boat is that you go through the wave, you don’t try to climb on it because if you climb on it you are going to fall off it, especially at speed – and this is a fast boat. We cruise at 20 knots day in and day out, and I am talking in two and a half metre waves.”

Although he built Magnet with a Pacific cruise in mind, it works out well in the Bahamas too, where he likes to dive right off the big boat. “We like to hang out. Many of the good dive spots are rolly anchorages in a monohull, but [now] where we dive we can stay out for the night; we don’t have to move to a bay and hide. And we travel on bad-weather days. When the wind is blowing is when we travel, so we don’t waste a good-weather day for travelling. That’s a game changer,” he says. So is the boat’s speed.

“I have a lot of friends who are not adventurous with their boats because they have to spend a day sailing [to their destination] or need an airport,” he says. No such worry with Magnet . She is fast, with a top speed of 27 to 28 knots, and is a model of efficiency at lower speeds. At 9.5 knots, the engines and generators go through 12 gallons of fuel, about 14 gallons at 10 knots and about 17 at 11 knots, meaning with the capacity to carry 29,000 gallons and twin MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls, she’s got a lot of range. “We can go from Panama to Australia, no problem,” Wallner says.

A lot of that, of course, is down to the naval architecture and construction. Built in welded aluminium, Magnet is strong but relatively light, at least compared to a displacement yacht in steel and aluminum.

The shipyard has a competent in-house engineering team but works with outside companies as well and tapped a naval architecture firm with a proven track record in fast catamarans. “We hired well-known catamaran designer Incat Crowther to handle the naval architecture. While the hull was new for the project, it drew from other similar Incat-designed craft,” says Chris Allard, co-owner and CEO of Metal Shark, which delivered Magnet , its first private vessel of this magnitude, in August 2020.

Established in 1986 as Gravois Aluminum Boats, the yard switched to the more evocative Metal Shark name in 2004. It has since built multiple recreational fishing boats and “a fair amount of yacht tenders.” Its core business is delivering boats to the US Coast Guard, the US Navy and other military clients around the world – and, Allard says, “everything from foil-assist catamaran fishing boats to high-speed catamaran passenger ferries, including 22-passenger vessels for the NYC Ferry system.”

This is precisely what attracted the owner, who knew Allard – a naval architect by training – well, and has enjoyed chatting with him about boats over the years. “I wanted a very strong hull and Metal Shark builds for the military and they really know how to weld,” he says.

He had a very good idea of what his goals were. Because he intends to spend a lot of time on board, he wanted what usually goes with this type of ambition – space and good views.

Wallner, who has owned boats for many years, starting with a 13 metre Buddy Davis, has built two with the American yard Lyman Morse. He still owns his 28.6 metre Electra . “Great boat,” he says, “but if you want to spend time on board, a cabin still is a cabin, and I wanted a bedroom. And instead of a saloon, I wanted a living room. And I wanted this,” he says, extending his arm toward the large panes of glass surrounding the space on all sides. “You can see where you are going. And the doors open fully and all the windows open. Instead of hiding in an air-conditioned space, you are in an open environment.”

How much glass is on board? “Literally tons. Many tons,” Allard says. “The front windows are more than 1.5in thick and weigh nearly 1,000 pounds each – we only broke one.” Diamond Sea Glaze of Vancouver, Canada, provided the tempered safety glass. Also from Canada is young designer Ryan Wynott, who has worked closely with Metal Shark for several years and helped translate sketches made on paper napkins into reality. “It’s pretty mind-blowing as an object, even before it moves,” he says.

“The owner had a vision and significantly formed ideas but gave the designers and the yard latitude to take that vision and build on it,” Allard says. “We spent almost two years, working collaboratively, in design before going forward with the build. It was truly an amazing experience.”

“The superstructure boasts strong similarities to other Metal Shark products, with chiseled and angular lines that are part of our signature rugged appearance,” he continues. The boat is faired and painted (a grey Awlgrip) with a nice finish on the superstructure. The hull sides are purposefully left a bit rougher. Teakdecking Systems installed synthetic decks, so you can step on board with shoes on and no one will faint. The owner wants the boat to be handled by few crew (currently it’s the captain plus three) and that’s part of the rationale for all choices made on board.

Inside, the owner did not want anything overtly luxurious. That fresh air flowing through the open doors and windows does not play nice with delicate fabrics and finishes.

The shipyard worked with American outfitter Westhoff Interiors to deliver a modern, easy-to-maintain interior that’s ready for anything – no marble, no carpets (except for a few small rugs), no parquet flooring nor wood veneer, few frills. With a glass-enclosed staircase leading to the bridge deck and the two VIP suites and low-profile furniture, the eye wanders freely through a large open space and settles on the scenery. The dining table on the main deck says a lot about Magnet . Its glass top reveals working gears that allow it to expand or retract according to need. It’s a perfect choice for a boat filled with glass and built for a man who will not only take the wheel of the yacht but knows how to replace faulty electrical parts.

Wallner, an electrical engineer and inventor, has well-informed opinions about software and the accessibility of components. His company Atlantitech built a lot of the boat’s electrical parts, and he has designed the control system that manages the boat. Fully equipped (including a sonar, FLIR cameras and bow thruster), Magnet is self-sufficient and able to tackle long passages, just like her owner wanted. Long-term plans include exploration in the Pacific. As for Metal Shark, the shipyard has enjoyed this project well enough that it has developed a whole line based on the M48 concept, knowing that out there in the world, more people are looking for a platform for adventure.

This is the only shark tour in the USA and to our knowledge the only tour where guests do not get in the water to view the sharks. Delight in close-up views of sharks and a variety of other marine life. In this eco-friendly catamaran, travel through shallow waters to a location a few miles from shore, observing dolphins, stingrays, barracudas and native birds along the way. Bait is used to attract lemon, nurse and other types of sharks to the side of the boat. Learn all about Key West wildlife and enjoy complimentary soda, juice and chips throughout this family-friendly tour.

Description

Pass By: Key West Extreme Adventures Shark Tours, 245 Front St, Pier B, behind the Opal Key Resort, Florida 33040

After check-in, the Tiger Cat will cruise through Key West harbor on the way to the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. Here guests will see numerous sharks and a variety of wildlife including dolphin.

Stop At: Key West, Key West, Florida

Travel through shallow water close to mangrove islands as you make your way about 4 miles (6.4 km) away from shore to the shark viewing site. Along the way, keep your eyes open for dolphin, sea turtles, stingrays, barracudas, tarpon and an array of native birds. Listen to your experienced pilot discuss the delicate ecosystem of this area and its abundance of wildlife. Enjoy complimentary water, soda, juice — as well as the use of polarized sunglasses — during your trip.

When you arrive at the shark destination, get ready for an unforgettable experience! Your pilot will use bait to draw a host of sharks that swim right up to the boat so you and your family can observe them in safety and comfort. See numerous lemon and nurse sharks, and watch out for bull, black tip and hammerhead sharks during nearly one hour of shark viewing. Capture dramatic photos you can't wait to share with family and friends.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Video: Kayakers have close encounter with 14-foot shark near Half Moon Bay

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: August 12, 2024 / 6:01 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

A couple of Bay Area kayakers had an unnerving close encounter with a large shark while fishing in Half Moon Bay last week that was captured on video.

Ian Walters works as a teacher at Oakland's Head-Royce School. He was filming his friend as they were out kayaking and fishing off Pillar Point Harbor north of Half Moon Bay and by famed big-wave surf spot Mavericks Beach last Tuesday when a shark started following his friend.

"You all right?" Walters is heard asking as he sees the sharks dorsal fin cutting through the water about 15 feet behind is friend's kayak.

"Yeah, I'm just gonna start moving in," his friend says in the video.

"I'm gonna follow you, ok?" Walters replies.

Pillar Point shark encounter

Speaking in an interview, Walters said realizes how lucky they were the shark didn't attack, but felt the experience was more surreal than scary.

"It followed my buddy for a couple minutes. We moved closer together and then we watched it circle back around and start following me," remembered Walters. "And we kind of led it off towards some seals and looked over our shoulders for another hour or two and everything was fine."

Walters shared his video with shark enthusiasts on the Internet. Commenters said the shark was likely a great white based on its size, which was about 14 feet long.

"I never thought in a million years I would get to experience one close up, you know?" said Walters. "I feel lucky to have done that and done that with a friend who could keep me calm and I could keep him calm. We tried to not bug it."

He says it may be a while before they go out kayaking again, but he definitely has a tale to share with his sixth-grade students.
