Sarasota hosts 40th annual Powerboat Grand Prix this weekend

SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota celebrated 40 years of hosting the Powerboat Grand Prix this weekend.

Championship races wrapped up on Sunday morning and about a dozen participants were able to go right home after, since they were from the Bay Area.

P1 offshore racing can be quite a bonding experience for a driver and a throttleman.

"You know what it's kinda like being a couple sometimes in that you gotta know what the other person is gonna do, and you know their strengths, you know their weaknesses, you can tell when they're nervous," explained Billy Glueck, throttleman for OC Racing.

Billy Glueck is a well-respected throttleman who has been out of the sport since 2018. But this year, he couldn’t resist getting back in the cockpit of OC Racing's 39-foot phantom with his good friend, fellow Sarasotan and team owner, Joey Olivieri.

"I put my team together and Billy and I have been friends from mutual friends, and I brought him on this past year when my previous throttleman got hurt," said Olivieri.

The dynamic duo makes the list of about a dozen men who represented Sarasota County in this weekend's races. Most of them are well acquainted with being locals with a need for speed on the water.

"Had a pleasure boat, a friend of mine, Richard Davis said, 'Hey, let's go boat racing.' So here we are 20 years later, racing and having a good time," shared Corey Shantry, Driver for SRQ Racing.

With races only lasting 45 minutes in the gulf, racers say the real fun has been in the pit, getting to meet fans and visitors who came out to support.

There will still be some action on the water when P1 Offshore returns to Clearwater at the end of the month, and St. Pete in October.

Op 1 en 2 juli vinden in Blankenberge het WK en BK offshore powerboat racing plaats. De races vinden plaats dicht bij de kustlijn, vanop de vernieuwde Pier heeft het publiek mooi zicht op de boten.

Het belooft een adembenemend schouwspel te worden waarin de beste raceteams strijden voor de felbegeerde titels. Offshore powerboat racing is een sport die snelheid, techniek en teamwork combineert. Naast powerboat races zijn er tussendoor ook wedstrijden jetski en ProCat races. ProCats zijn ultralichte catamaranboten, aangedreven met max. 50 pk, die ongelooflijk snel en wendbaar zijn.

Tijdens de races gaan getalenteerde piloten intense competities aan, terwijl ze met deze kleine maar krachtige vaartuigen over het water manoeuvreren. Het botenpark met meer dan dertig boten uit binnen- en buitenland – onder meer Spanje, Italië, Duitsland, Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Koeweit zijn vertegenwoordigd – ligt ter hoogte van de Konkelberge Kaai.

After a successful event at Ostend BKOffshore and P1 AquaX are now off to Blankenberge where we have our 4th round of the Belgian Offshore Championship for watercraft and Powerboats> This is a new course laid out between the pier and the picket fence. This time private pleasure craft can participate also in their own, separate round. The public can follow the race from the picket fence or the beach. The boats depart from VVW Blankenberge.

Blankenberge is a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders, situated just south of Zeebrugge and north of Ostend.

Famous for its sandy beach, there's a structure unique along the Belgian coast: a 350-m long art-deco pier, the Belgium Pier, constructed in 1933.

2021 sees the first time that P1 AquaX has raced at this location.

    Welcome to OCRDA - The Offshore Circuit Racing Drivers Association : Run by a professional and highly experienced team of dedicated individuals headed up by their intrepid President Bob McCarthy.

Bob took over as chairman of the club in the dark ages and over the last few years the sport has grown massively in popularity with over 31 teams competing in the 2017 season. Joining up with Jetski Racing, Water Ski Racing, Zapcat Racing, Jet Ski Stunt displays, and stunning Flyboarding displays, the series has toured since 2014 as Aqua Adrenaline – combining a number of aspects to provide fantastic on water entertainment for spectators.

As the sport flourishes we are welcoming more teams and more companies in terms of 2024 sponsorship for what promises to be another fantastic season.

Powerboat P1 has today announced its P1 Offshore race calendar for the 2024 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin again and returning to favorite venues in Florida. The Sarasota and St. Petersburg grand prix events on Florida’s Gulf Coast move away from their traditional dates around the Independence Day and Labor Day vacations respectively and will provide an exhilarating climax to the season in September and October.

Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast will again host the season opener in mid-May with a weekend of ‘fast boats and cold drinks.’ Thunder On Cocoa Beach will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of staging this event and its Executive Director, Kerry Bartlett will be unveiling special plans to mark this milestone.

In August, racing will return to Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a second year. Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported that last season’s inaugural Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge delivered an economic impact of $4.7 million with more than 40,000 attending the three-day festival, and this year’s event in August will be open to all offshore classes. Mayor Ryan Sorenson said: “I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our City’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.” City Administrator Casey Bradley added: “This event not only brings a surge of energy to our City but also underscores our commitment to hosting world class events. We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

Another event milestone will be celebrated in September with the 40th anniversary of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, making it the second longest-running powerboat festival in the United States. For decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious event that brings significant value to the county. Local media reports that it generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and P1’s national and international television deals showcase the city’s many attractions to an audience of more than 200 million homes. Pete Harvey, Director of Sports at Visit Sarasota County commented: “The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

The season finale will see the race teams head along the Gulf Coast to St. Petersburg for the Monster Energy St. Pete Grand Prix. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly become a favorite venue will the racers and it will see the APBA national champions crowned in October. “We’re excited to see one of America’s best waterfront locations selected to host the Powerboat P1 grand prix event,” commented Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/CEO Brian Lowack. “We love the opportunity to show off the spectacular downtown St. Pete waterfront and award-winning St. Pete Pier as spectators come from near and far to our beautiful destination or tune in on TV around the globe to see some of the most exciting action on water.”

Seven teams are expected to compete in this season’s UIM Class 1 World Championship and races will be staged at the P1 Offshore events. Powerboat P1’s aim is to attract more teams and build the worldwide television audience to return Class 1 to the summit of the sport. “Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.”

It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.

The UIM Pleasure Navigation Commission have announced a new format for their 2022 World Championship. It will see three rounds held this year with each round having two races giving the competitors six opportunities to secure maximum points in this highly competitive series.

‘We hope this format will encourage new teams from as many countries as possible to take part’ said the Commission’s Chairman Denis Dillion.

He went on to say that 2022 will not be without its challenges as Covid is still with us, plus the classes will see the start of the changeover to using only EPA compliant engines by the start of the 2023 season.

Last season saw the three classes – P150, B300, and S450 – compete for the world titles at two different venues. The first took the teams to the Italian town of Rodi Garganico located on the South-Eastern Adriatic coastline.

In the P150 class the Spanish crew of Plazuelo Garcia and Herrera Pardo put their Envirude powered CBS hull to good use winning the first heat and then securing third place in the second to finish the weekend in the top spot.

Overall honours for the B300 class was a closely fought battle between two Bernico entries. In the end it was the Belgian crew of Buby Bertels and Nico de Stoop who just managed to hold off the Dutch pairing of Jan Cees Korteland and Paul Korteland in the second heat to secure maximum points.

In the S450 category it was a strong performance by the Italian crew of Rosario Longo and Enrico Marani in their Power Marine hull that secured victory in both heats each time finishing a lap ahead of the Belgian crew of Nico Bertels and Francis Notschaele.

After a break of four months the race teams then headed to Spain’s Atlantic coast for Round Two. The tourist town of Baiona with its medieval historical centre situated by the outlet of the Vigo Bay played host to the concluding rounds of both UIM Pleasure Navigation World and European Championships.

The race circuit, laid out in the beautiful Baiona Cove just in front of the Ladeira Beach front, would see the teams race a total of thirty-eight (short race) and forty-five (long race) nautical miles in each heat.

Continuing where they left off in the P150 class were Garcia and Pardo. A second and third place finish would give the Spanish team enough points to secure the 2021 world title.

In the B300 class Buby Bertels and Nico de Stoop faced a new challenge for the title in the shape of Ahmad  Abul and Mustafa Al Dashti. The Kuwaiti team drove a strong race securing a second place in Saturday’s heat and won the long race on Sunday. This result would see Abdul and Al Dashti collect a UIM Bronze medal. Taking the Silver would be the Belgian crew of Benjamin Van Riet alongside Robbe Van Riet, who, following their third place in Italy would once again finish third in Spain. It would be their fellow countryman of Bertels and de Stoop finishing the season with three heat wins out of a possible four who would collect the Gold medal.

When Longo and Marani suffered a head gasket failure during the first heat any hopes that the Italians had of repeating their Round One victories literally went up in smoke. When they were unable to fix the issue before Sundays heat the S450 title was duly collected by Nico Bertels and Francis Notschaele who won both heats in Spain. The Italians had gained enough points to finish second overall which meant that Christian Cesati and Matteo Berardi would collect the Bronze.
