Sailing Yacht ELENA was ‘born to sail’ as her predecessor was, almost one hundred years earlier. This Classic will provide a thrilling experience for any keen sailors wishing to take part in any of the Mediterranean or Caribbean Classic Regattas.

With her expansive decks, luxurious interior and modern facilities, ELENA is also an excellent charter yacht for those just wishing to relax and enjoy her pure elegance. Below deck, ELENA is equipped with the latest navigation and communication equipment, entertainment systems and air conditioning.

With luxurious accommodation for up to ten guests, the layout remains true to the original drawings from Herreshoff. This modern version enjoys the addition of discrete extras to ensure guests can enjoy all the modern comforts. All guest cabins are exquisitely finished with mahogany paneling, while all interior ornamental details follow the original Herreshoff designs.

The en-suite bathrooms have separate showers and toilets and are finished with elegant period fittings. Ample hanging and cupboard space is built in, while each cabin has its own privately controlled air conditioning system as well as an iPod docking station with televisions available on request. Overhead skylights and portholes offer an abundance of natural light while below deck.

After following the designs of the original ELENA so meticulously, there is no doubt that the rebirth of this spectacular yacht nearly one hundred years later can only be as successful as her original namesake. Her unforgettable blend of beauty and sheer speed ensure that she will turn heads wherever she goes. ELENA truly is one of the most remarkable charter yachts available today.

Sailing Yachts - ELENA

About Luxury Sailing Catamaran ELENA: Luxury sailing boat ELENA is a traditional racing yacht schooner designed by what yachting historians would most likely say, the admiral Nathanael Herreshoff. With a degree in mechanical engineering Nat revolutionized the world of yacht design producing a number of America Cup winners between 1893–1920 before he died.  The original schooner Elena achieved her ultimate triumph after his death, back in 1928 when she won the 3,500 mile King's Cup Trans-Atlantic Race from New York to northern Spain.  The current ELENA is only a few years old, yet classifies as a genuine classic yacht, a type of boat often favoured by the traditionalist amongst yacht charterers.  Her timeless and elegant design offers something untouchable, which just does not transpire within a modern yacht.  In people’s minds, there is an instilled assumption that a classic yacht would most likely offer an unsightly, old-fashioned interior.  With ELENA this simply is not the case.  Seducing with unparalleled opulence, this yacht is as modern as it can get and with her super yacht crew of 8, the service on board is also at an exceptionally high level.  Add to this excellent value for money and you are certainly in for a treat.  With the most modern facilities on board, she offers a modern combination of tradition, elegance and security guaranteed by the state-of-the-art technologies found on board.  Charter ELENA now during the most popular periods in the year so as not to avoid the disappointment. Accommodation: Luxury Sailing Yacht ELENA can accommodate 10 guests in a classically designed, yet very modern interior.  Her amazingly stylish woodwork throughout and elegant, age correct fittings are discreetly updated with the most modern technology.  The guests will find a Master, a VIP, a double and two twin cabins on board.  All guest cabins are exquisitely finished and fully loaded with modern facilities such as individually controlled air conditioning, iPod docking station, and en-suite bathrooms.  Exquisite mahogany panelling abounds and the individual interior ornamental details follow the original designer detailing.  Overhead portholes provide lovely natural light ensuring the time spent below deck is as enchanting and exhilarating as the one above. The private yacht ELENA charter rates: ELENA super yacht charter rates start at 80,000 Eur per week in low season, while high season prices are as high as 90,000 Eur per week plus obligatory APA Expenses. In some locations VAT may be charged on top and prices can be higher on special days such as NEW YEAR or during special events such as Voile les St Tropez or during reacing season in the Caribbean.    Special offers, negotiated deals and last minute discounts are available on request. Luxury classic charter yacht ELENA is fully air conditioned throughout. This is a non-smoking vessel. ELENA´s experienced super yacht charter crew of up to 8 including the captain, have a separate head and shower and share companionway with the guests. During racing charters the number of the crew can be as high as 30 men and women. Guests may not be allowed to bring pets on-board.

Elena of London is a stunning replica of a classic racing schooner. Built in 2009 by Factoria Naval Marin, this sailing yacht is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering. The original Elena was designed in 1910 by the legendary naval architect “the wizzard of Bristol,” Nathaniel Herreshoff for a wealthy American businessman named Morton F. Plant. She quickly gained a reputation as one of the fastest racing schooners of her time, winning numerous regattas and breaking several speed records. Elena of London is offering the ultimate classic sailing experience, with a spacious and comfortable interior and all the modern amenities you would expect from a luxury yacht. She can accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 beautifully appointed cabins, each with its own en-suite bathroom. The master suite is particularly impressive, with a double berth, an office-sized desk, seating for two and a particularly spacious bathroom. On deck, Elena of London is a sight to behold, with her towering masts, vast sails, and gleaming varnish.

Overall, Elena of London is a stunning example of a classic racing schooner, with all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable and luxurious sailing experience.

If you are in the market for a truly exceptional yacht, she is definitely worth a closer look.

The Elena is named for Queen Helena of Italy. She is 135ft long overall and 96ft on the waterline, with a beam of 27ft 6in and 17ft draft.”

10 classic sailing yachts competing at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez marks the last event on the Mediterranean racing calendar and is heralded as one of the most prestigious regattas in the world. In its 24th year, the regatta will take place across two weeks from September 24 to October 8, with the first welcoming all classic yachts and modern boats up to 18 metres in length, before the Maxis take to the water in week two. As the competition gets underway, we a look at the line-up of classic schooners and wooden yawls getting ready to race...

Shenandoah of Sark

Length : 55m Builder : Townsend & Downey

Shenandoah of Sark has welcomed high-profile aristocrats, Hollywood heavyweights and even royalty on board since her launch in 1902, which makes her one of the oldest superyachts still sailing today. She was built as a triple-masted wooden schooner with a 13 metre bowsprit and she flies 2,646 square metres of sail. While she is a born racer, Shenandoah of Sark has enjoyed more leisurely cruising over the years, and has circumnavigated as far as Norway, Madagascar and the remote shores of South Georgia. A crew of 12 operates her day-to-day, but in race mode she can be manned by as many as 30 crew.

Length : 55m Builder : FNM

Elena is a replica of a 1910 sailing yacht by the same name and her design pays tribute to the golden age of sail. The original Elena was designed by Nat Herreshoff to win the 1928 Transatlantic Race where she sailed from New York to Santander in record time. She has been built with racing bones and her crew has collected plenty of silverware since her launch - Elena has won Antigua Classic Week, Les Voiles de St Tropez and Monaco Classic Week. Elena is currently for sale .

Length : 41.15m Builder : Fife

Cambria was commissioned by newspaper magnate Sir William Berry and delivered in 1928. After enjoying fifty years on the racing circuit she eventually fell off the radar. She was assumed to have been destroyed, like many sailing yachts of her time, in the Second World War but was rediscovered in Australia in the 1990's and restored to her former glory. After her rebuild, there was no doubt now that Cambria once again fulfils Fife’s basic requirement of a yacht – that she be both “fast and bonnie”.

Length :  39m Builder : GraafShip

Built in 2013, Naema is a beautiful example of a modern classic designed by Olivier F. van Meer and based upon by an Alfred Mylne schooner named Panda that sank in 1983 after a fire ravaged her to her waterline. Naema was built at Graafship in Turkey and underwent a significant refit in 2014 which saw her plumbing, engines and technical equipment removed and replaced. She is a regatta regular having competed at The Superyacht Cup, The Candy Store Cup and the Inaugural Capri Classica.

Length : 33.52m Builder : Feadship

Iduna is a rare example of a classic Feadship sailing yacht. She was delivered in 1939 and remained the largest yacht to leave the Dutch shipyard until 1960. She has been refitted several times throughout her life including one that saw her rig changed from a gaff ketch to a Bermudan ketch. Most notably, she underwent a full restoration in 1999 led by Dutchman Johan van den Bruele. He was determined to preserve as much of the original vessel as possible, including the main mast, skylights, deck saloon, compass, anchor winch and steering wheel. Any new parts that were required were built using traditional boatbuilding methods to stay true to her original build. Iduna is currently for sale .

Length :  38.4m Builder : Elco

Puritan is one of the most notable schooners ever built and her history is well-documented. Since her construction in 1930, she has served active duty in the US Navy during World War Two, sailed between Nova Scotia and Cape Horn and even acted as a research vessel for the American Museum of Natural History on which a new mollusc was discovered and named Puritanina harribaueri in tribute. Puritan is a gaff-rigged schooner designed by legendary American designer John Alden. She has had a number of owners throughout her life and has been refitted several times (and even saved from the scrap heap on one occasion). She went on to become a regatta regular on the Mediterranean circuit.

Length : 28.65m Builder : Fife

Sumurun was commissioned in 1914 by a baroness as a gift to her husband and is one of the oldest competing yachts in this year's Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. She was built using teak and oak by Scottish shipyard Fife and hailed as one of the swiftest and most beautiful yachts afloat. Sumurun ’s story is filled with vivid personalities, a multitude of racing victories including the overall win at Antigua Classics Week in 2013, and an elegance that has transcended the vagaries of over a century on the water.

Hallowe'en

Length :  24.69 Builder : Fife

Hallowe'en was launched in 1926 as a Bermudan cutter, which was uncommon in the days when gaff-rigged racers dominated the various regattas. Her owners continued to experiment with her rig and eventually, she was transformed to a yawl. Hallowe'en spent many years racing the Mediterranean and the Atlantic before falling off the radar. She was later discovered by Walter Wheeler and renamed Cotton Blosson IV before continuing her history of ocean racing and eventually being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in Rhode Island where she awaited a much-needed refit. After five years of work in Newport, funds dried up and Hallowe’en was facing the scrap heap when Elizabeth Meyer, the woman behind the restoration of  J Class Endeavour helped find a buyer to restore her to her former glory.

Aschanti IV

Length : 34.8m Builder : Burmester

Aschanti IV is a staysail schooner built in 1954 as Aschanti of Saba. She is a veteran of the world's classic yacht regattas and has won on many occasions including an overall win in the 2022 Antigua Classics Regatta. A thorough refit by Lürssen in 1994 saw the installation of up-to-date technology including hydraulic winches and two 36.5 metre spruce masts. What started as an upgrade swiftly became a full rebuild as every attempt was made to reconstruct the boat using traditional boat-building techniques. This included riveting her original steel plates back in place.

Length : 24.08m Builder : Fife

Mariella was built at the Fife shipyard in 1938 to a design by Alfred Mylne and delivered as a Bermudan yawl. Her mainmast stands 28 metres tall and she flies 279 square metres of sail. She has been owned for many years by Carlo Falcone, proprietor of the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, and has raced in many classic regattas on both sides of the Atlantic over the last 75 years. She is a regular competitor at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and this year, at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, she is joined by her fellow Fife builds Hallowe'en, Cambria and Sumurun.

Built at Fairlie by Fife

classic sailing yacht elena

The 30 metre, gaff cutter  Moonbeam of Fife III  epitomises beautiful classic yachts at their finest. Launched in 1903,  Moonbeam of Fife  is still going strong on the classic yacht regatta circuit despite being more than a hundred years old. The William Fife-designed yacht is constructed in wood with an oak hull and superstructure, while her interior joinery is well-kept mahogany. The historical yacht  Moonbeam of Fife III  is currently for sale.

Tuiga, 1909

classic sailing yacht elena

Built by the renowned William Fife shipyard in Fairlie on the Clyde estuary in Scotland,  Tuiga  was commissioned by the Duke of Medinaceli, a close friend of the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, and has had 10 owners in 106 years. HSH Prince Albert II decided to buy her in 1995.  Tuiga  has been participating in classic yacht regattas ever since and is now the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, crewed by YCM members.

Mariette, 1915

Built by Herreshoff

classic sailing yacht elena

The classic 42 metre twin-masted schooner _Mariette of 1915 _was built by Herreshoff in the United States 100 years ago. Age has not withered her, but  Mariette of 1915  has undergone a few refits in the Pendennis yard at Falmouth in recent years: in 2010 and again in 2012 in preparation for the Pendennis Cup, in which she took first prize in the St Petroc Traditional Class as well as being crowned overall winner. In 2014 she returned to Falmouth once more for minor works.

Creole, 1927

Built by Camper & Nicholson

classic sailing yacht elena

Now owned by the Gucci family, this beautiful wooden schooner has had a colourful history. Commissioned by wealthy American Alan Cochran and launched in 1927,   Creole  has had a number of different owners and also been called  Vira.  When she was known as  Magic Circle , she was transformed into a minesweeper during the Second World War, having previously competed in a number of regattas and attended previous America’s Cup events. In the 1970s she was used by the Danish government for sailing training in the rehabilitation of drug addicts before being bought by the Gucci family in 1983.

Endeavour, 1934

classic sailing yacht elena

Arguably the world’s most famous J Class,   Endeavour  was the British challenger in the 1934 America’s Cup, but was beaten by the Harold Vanderbilt-owned  Rainbow .  Endeavour  was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, who was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to  Endeavour ’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen around the world, winning many races in her first season. Though she did not win the America’s Cup she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Since 1934, she has often led a perilous existence, even being sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In 1984, American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought  Endeavour  and she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman.  Endeavour  sailed again on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years. J Class yacht   Endeavour  is now for sale.

Elena, 1910

Built by Herreshof

classic sailing yacht elena

In 1910, Morton Plant commissioned 55 metre   Elena  to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the so-called “Wizard of Bristol”, who made his name designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant’s brief was to the point: he wanted a schooner “that can win”.

Herreshoff gave  Elena  a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability.  Elena  won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet and in 1928 came her crowning glory, victory in the Transatlantic Race. In 2009, she was rebuilt using the original plans for the first  Elena.

Black Swan, 1899

classic sailing yacht elena

Originally designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England,  Black Swan  started life as  Brynhild  with a yawl rig. She won a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King’s Cup. Over the years, she has undergone several changes and different rig configurations, and at one stage she was renamed  Changrilla . She was rechristened  Black Swan  in the 1960s and, today, after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy, she is now carrying a gaff-rig, designed by the Faggioni Yacht Design Studio and built by Harry Spencer.

Mariquita, 1911

Built by Fairlie

classic sailing yacht elena

Another beautiful classic yacht from Fife,  Mariquita  was launched in 1911. The 38.16 metre sailing yacht was designed and built for the industrialist Arthur Stothert. As part of the 19 metre Big Class racing that re-emerged in 1911, this gaff-rigged cutter is said to have inspired the J Class yachts that came after her.

She raced competitively against her brethren from 1911-1913, but by the 1950s,  Mariquita  was the last in the 19 metre class remaining. She was restored in 1991 and received a further refit in 2004. A star on the classic yacht racing scene,  Mariquita  is now for sale.
