The Master suite: On the main deck of this fine yacht charter boat you will find the full beam master suite.  Most who saw it would agree, the suite is a piece of art in itself. The most distinguishing feature is the bed-head wall, created by a local Italian designer, which has the wood dug and grooved by hand, then uniquely painted in temperas and acrylic. The cabin also features an office area, walk-in wardrobe and large windows and the waves on the wall provide the sensation of being right next to the sea.  The sumptuous en-suite facilities feature Azul Do Mar marble, a double shower and led lighting- to create the atmosphere you and your partner will appreciate.  Guest accommodation: The modern VIP stateroom is located on the lower deck, together with the remaining 2 x double and 2 x twin cabins. Nevertheless, all cabins are spacious, have the latest en-suite facilities, audio and visual equipment and air condition. The aft main deck dining table is the perfect place for alfresco dining, while the upper deck dining area is fantastic for meals under a cool shade. It is separated from the Kara Sea by the Kara Strait and the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The White Sea and the Pechora Sea are two parts of the Barents Sea. The White Sea is a southern arm of the Barents Sea, which separates the Kola Peninsula from the Russian mainland. The Pechora Sea is situated in the southeastern part of the Barents Sea.

The maximum width of the Barents Sea is 1,050 km and it is about 1,300 km in length. The sea is relatively shallow and has an estimated average depth of 230 m. The sea’s deepest point is 600 m at the Bear Island Trench. The floor of the Barents Sea is mainly covered with sediments and is crisscrossed from east to west by numerous deep trenches, namely the Bear Island Trench and the Northern, Northeastern, and South Cape trenches. The Barents Sea faces a subarctic climate , where the average winter temperature ranges between -25°C and -5°C. The summer temperature ranges between 0°-10°C. The waters of the Barents Sea have a high salinity of 34 parts per 1,000.

The north-flowing ocean currents transport the warm waters of the Atlantic into the Arctic Ocean through the Barents Sea. In addition to the sea ice at its surface, the Barents Sea also receives significant sea-ice from the central Arctic Ocean, blown southward by the wind. During the warm summer months, the ice melts, thereby providing an influx of freshwater to the Barents Sea. The warm Atlantic waters that are brought into the Barents Sea then prevent the formation of the surface sea-ice and are also in turn melting the existing sea ice below. Scientists have discovered ‘hotspots’ where some parts of the Barents Sea have started to closely resemble the Atlantic. This phenomenon has been termed Atlantification. Human-caused global climate change has been accelerating the Atlantification process and this will in turn significantly affect the weather patterns, ocean circulations, and the entire Arctic ecosystem.

The Barents Sea supports the highest seafloor biodiversity, which includes some of the world’s largest deep-water coral reefs and coastal kelp forests. The coral reefs and kelp forests serve as important feeding, breeding and nursing grounds for the rich and diverse marine life. Phytoplankton provides food for the different zooplanktons and other deep-sea invertebrates like sponges, crustaceans, and bivalves living in this sea. About 150 species of fish are found in the sea. Some of the notable fish species include capelin, Norwegian-Arctic cod, salmon, herring, and catfish. The Barents Sea also supports one of the largest colonies of seabirds and about 20 million seabirds belonging to 40 different species are found here during the summer months. The prominent seabird species include the black guillemot, common guillemot, puffin , and razorbill. About 12 species of whales, five species of dolphins, six species of seals, walruses, otters, polar bears, and Arctic foxes are also found in and around the Barents Sea.

The Barents Sea was previously known as "Murmanskoye Morye" to the Russians. This name was about the Norwegians who used to sail in the sea waters and therefore the name widely appeared in the 1595 Arctic maps along with other 16th century maps. The sea’s current name was first published in a chart in 1853, in the honor of the famous Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz. The Barents Sea was one of the more difficult seas for the sailors and ocean rowers to cross and hence they called the sea the “The Devil’s Jaw” or “The Devil’s Dance Floor.” During the Second World War, the historic “Battle of the Barents Sea” was fought here between the Germans and the British.

The Barents Sea serves as an important site for the exploration of petroleum and natural gas and is therefore of great economic importance due to the oil fields that are located in the region. The most important oil and natural gas fields that are located in the Barents Sea include Norway’s Goliat field and Russia’s Shtokman field. The Barents Sea is also a highly productive fishing area. Due to the warm currents of the North Atlantic Drift, the Russian port of Murmansk and the Norwegian port of Vardø, which are located in the southern part of the Barents Sea, remain ice-free throughout the year.

Italy issues 60-day detention order for MSF rescue ship

Italy’s order further reduces an already insufficient search and rescue capacity, making the dangerous sea crossing even more deadly.

The Geo Barents recue vessel shines a light on a small boat at night in the central Mediterranean.

ROME, August 27, 2024 — Italian authorities have issued a 60-day detention order for the Geo Barents , a search and rescue ship operated by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), for alleged violations of maritime safety regulations.

The detention order, issued on August 26, followed several rescue operations that took place in the early hours of August 23 in the Central Mediterranean. The order alleges that the Geo Barents failed to provide timely information to the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and endangered people's lives. MSF refutes these allegations, which are based on information provided by the Libyan Coast Guard.

We have been sanctioned for simply fulfilling our legal duty to save lives. Juan Matias Gil, MSF search and rescue representative

“The EU-supported Libyan Coast Guard , whom the Italian authorities consider a reliable actor, has been documented and accused by the United Nations of complicity in serious human rights violations in Libya, amounting to crimes against humanity, collusion with smugglers and traffickers, and of being responsible for violent pushbacks at sea,” said Juan Matias Gil, MSF search and rescue representative. “We have been sanctioned for simply fulfilling our legal duty to save lives.”

People aboard a fiberglass boat wear lifejackets in the Mediterranean Sea.

On the day of the detention order, MSF teams on Geo Barents conducted five rescue operations. MSF has been accused of not providing timely information about the third rescue that occurred on that date. During that third rescue, MSF witnessed a significant number of people going overboard within the vicinity of the ship.

Our teams had no choice but to go, stabilize people, and retrieve them out of water as quickly as possible. There was an imminent danger of people drowning or getting lost in the darkness of the night. Riccardo Gatti, MSF search and rescue team leader

“It was in the middle of the night. We saw people jumping off a fiberglass boat, falling or being pushed into the water,” said Riccardo Gatti, MSF search and rescue team leader. “Our teams had no choice but to go, stabilize people, and retrieve them out of water as quickly as possible. There was an imminent danger of people drowning or getting lost in the darkness of the night.”

This is the third time the Geo Barents has been detained and this is the longest in its history. It marks the twenty-third occasion in which a humanitarian rescue ship has been detained since the Piantedosi Decree was passed in early 2023 . As well as violating international and European laws, the Piantedosi Decree has exacerbated the already insufficient search and rescue capacity at sea, making the central Mediterranean—one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes—even more deadly.

Saving lives is not a crime

“This is yet another example of how much the Piantedosi Decree not only contravenes international and European laws but is also contradictory to the obligations to act in the face of a state of necessity when human lives are at risk,” said Gil. "The authorities are forcing us to prioritize either saving people at sea or the freedom of the rescue ship. The preservation of human life is at the core of our MSF's social mission, and we will therefore be contesting this unlawful detention through the appropriate legal channels."

The Geo Barents is currently unable to conduct rescues in the Mediterranean due to the aforementioned detention. MSF urges the Italian authorities to release the Geo Barents from this detention to fulfill its duty of rescuing lives and cease immediately obstructing humanitarian lifesaving assistance at sea. We also call on the EU and its member states to suspend all material and financial support to the Libyan Coast Guard and authorities with a track record of human rights violations.

MSF search and rescue in the Mediterranean Sea

MSF has been active in search and rescue activities since 2015, working on eight different rescue vessels (alone or in partnership with other NGOs) and rescuing more than 91,000 people. Since launching search and rescue operations on the Geo Barents in May 2021, MSF teams have rescued more than 12,300 people, recovered the bodies of 24, arranged for medical evacuation of four, and assisted in the delivery of one baby.

Italian authorities detain MSF rescue ship for 60 days

MSF teams from the Geo Barents pull people from the water during a nighttime rescue. Central Mediterranean Sea, 23 August 2024.

  • MSF’s search and rescue ship, the Geo Barents, is being prevented from carrying out lifesaving activities.
  • Italian authorities have issued a 60-day detention order on the Geo Barents, based off information from the Libyan Coast Guard.
  • We strongly refute these allegations and call on the Italian authorities to immediately release the Geo Barents.

Rome – On 26 August, the Italian authorities issued a 60-day detention order on the Geo Barents , a search and rescue ship operated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), for alleged violations of maritime safety regulations.

The detention order was issued following several rescue operations that took place very early in the morning of 23 August in the Central Mediterranean Sea , where the Geo Barents is alleged to have failed to provide timely information to the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and to have endangered people's lives. MSF refutes these allegations, which are based on information provided by the Libyan Coast Guard.

“The EU-supported Libyan Coast Guard, who the Italian authorities consider as a reliable organisation, has been documented and accused by the United Nations of complicity in serious human rights violations in Libya, amounting to crimes against humanity, collusion with smugglers and traffickers, and of being responsible for violent pushbacks at sea,” says Juan Matias Gil, MSF search and rescue representative. “We have been sanctioned for simply fulfilling our legal duty to save lives.”

The authorities are forcing us to prioritise either saving people at sea or the freedom of the rescue ship. -Juan Matias Gil, MSF search and rescue representative

On 23 August, our teams onboard the Geo Barents conducted five rescue operations. The third operation, in which MSF is accused of failing to provide timely information about, occurred after our team witnessed a significant number of people going overboard in the vicinity of the ship.

“It was in the middle of the night; we saw people jumping off a fibreglass boat, falling or being pushed into the water,” says Riccardo Gatti, MSF Search and Rescue Team Leader. “Our teams had no choice than to go, stabilise people and retrieve them out of water as quickly as possible. There was an imminent danger of people drowning or getting lost in the darkness of the night.”

This latest detention order is significant, not only because it is the third time the Geo Barents has been detained, but also because it’s for the longest period. So far, humanitarian rescue ships have been detained on 23 occasions since the enforcement of Italian decree-law in early 2023, known as the ‘Piantedosi Decree’. The decree-law is specifically designed to impede the vital search and rescue activities of NGOs at sea.

“This is yet another example of how much the Piantedosi Decree not only contravenes international and European laws, but is also contradictory to the obligations to act in the face of a state of necessity when human lives are at risk,” states Matias Gil. “The authorities are forcing us to prioritise either saving people at sea or the freedom of the rescue ship.”

“The preservation of human life is at the core of our social mission,” says Matias Gil. “We will therefore be contesting this unlawful detention through the appropriate legal channels.”

The Geo Barents is currently unable to conduct rescues in the Mediterranean Sea due to the detention. This will further exacerbate the already insufficient search and rescue capacity at sea, making the Central Mediterranean – one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes – even more deadly.

We urge the Italian authorities to release the Geo Barents from detention, to enable us to fulfil our duty of rescuing lives. MSF asks Italian authorities to cease immediately obstructing humanitarian lifesaving assistance at sea. We also call on the EU and its member states to suspend all material and financial support to the Libyan Coast Guard and authorities with a track record of human rights violations.

Background Information

On 23 August 2024, MSF teams conducted five different rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean Sea. In total, 191 people were rescued, including women and children. Afterwards, the Italian MRCC first assigned Napoli as the place of safety (POS) to disembark people, and this was later changed to the port of Civitavecchia, and then, to Salerno.

MSF has been active in search and rescue activities since 2015, working on eight different rescue vessels (alone or in partnership with other NGOs) and having rescued more than 91,000 people. Since launching search and rescue operations on board Geo Barents in May 2021, MSF teams have rescued more than 12,300 people, recovered the bodies of 24 people, arranged for medical evacuation of 4 people, and assisted in the delivery of one baby.
