Ep 52 - Glenn Ashby and the land speed record

Ep 52 - Glenn Ashby and the land speed record

The number 202.9 might not mean a lot to most but is a figure Glenn Ashby has become obsessed about. The two-time America’s Cup winner is now leading a group from Emirates Team New Zealand trying to break the wind powered land speed record. They need to go faster than 202.9km/h on the salt flats of Lake Gairdner in South Australia to do it.

Glenn joins us for this episode of Broad Reach Radio to talk about why he and Emirates Team New Zealand are chasing this record, what they need to do to break it and just how fast he thinks they can go. He also talks about what it’s like to sail the craft the team have built, what tricks they’ve taken from motor racing and just how much he can see when he’s strapped into the cockpit.

Glenn talks passionately about this quest and provides a fascinating insight into the project from its inception to the point they are now. The team have had plenty of setbacks over the last few weeks, mostly due to the weather, but momentum is building towards an official record attempt and their quest to see how fast they can go.

Ep 51 - Simon Gundry and Ceramco New Zealand

Ep 51 - Simon Gundry and Ceramco New Zealand

New Zealand has a proud tradition in the round the world race and a lot of that started with Ceramco New Zealand in the early 1980s – the first New Zealand-flagged boat to compete in the gruelling event. It was a campaign headed up by Sir Peter Blake and something that captured the imagination of Kiwis everywhere. But disaster struck on the first leg of the race when the boat’s mast came down in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean as the team were vying for the lead. It was a devastating blow for the crew, including Simon Gundry who is today’s guest on Broad Reach Radio.

Simon details what happened that day when the mast came down and how the crew rallied to sail 4000 miles under jury rig to complete the leg but also describes the inescapable feeling on board that they had let the nation down. He talks about their epic battles with the crew on Flyer in subsequent legs, including when they had their rivals in sight for 10 of the 24 days across the Southern Ocean to Cape Horn, and provides an insight into Peter Blake, from his unorthodox approach to crew selection to his recognition of the value of media to build support for Ceramco.

Simon is one of the characters of New Zealand sailing, and talks about the imaginary animals he had on board, his love of reciting poetry, how he managed to pull a team of yachties together to play in a rugby sevens tournament while in port in Argentina and the after-effects of one of their annual Mast Falling Down parties. He’s a terrific story-teller who was able to give a detailed insight into that 1981/82 Whitbread Round the World Race and a campaign that changed Kiwi yachting.

Ep 50 - Karl Budge

Ep 50 - Karl Budge

Karl Budge doesn’t purport to be much of a sailor, but he is one of this country’s leading event organisers having previously turned the ASB Classic into one of the world’s best tennis tournaments. He consistently attracted some of the world’s top tennis players to this country and now he’s looking to sprinkle his magic dust on the New Zealand leg of SailGP.

Karl talks about why he got involved in SailGP and what his vision is for the New Zealand legs that will be held in alternating years between Christchurch and Auckland. He also talks about what the fan experience is like at SailGP events around the world. Talk inevitably turned to tennis and what tricks he used to lure players like Serena and Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova to these shores. He also talks about the time he gave Serena a piece of his mind after a less than inspiring performance. But she still came back the following year.

Karl delves into his background that saw him leave school at 16 only to find himself working at the WTA and Manchester United, but also turn down job opportunities with Formula 1, Manchester City and the NFL. This is a slightly different episode of Broad Reach Radio, but a good way to mark the 50th podcast.

Ep 49 - Mike Sanderson

Ep 49 - Mike Sanderson

Mike Sanderson is one of the most successful sailors of his generation. He’s a former World Sailor of the Year, two-time winner of the round the world race including when he skippered ABN Amro to victory in the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean Race, been involved in multiple America’s Cup campaigns, a record breaker, a successful maxi yacht skipper and now co-owner and CEO of Doyle Sails.

Mike has plenty of stories to tell, and we touch on a few of those in this podcast, from why he left school early and how he earned his ticket alongside many of his heroes on New Zealand Endeavour, to heading up international teams and dealing with the tragedy of losing a friend at sea while still racing. He clearly has a passion for the sport and it doesn’t matter if he’s racing in a high-pressure environment or going for a blast with a son on the Auckland Harbour. He’s also fascinated by trying to work out how to make a boat go fast and clearly been very good at figuring it out.

Ep 48 - Sharon Ferris-Choat

Ep 48 - Sharon Ferris-Choat

There’s not a lot Sharon Ferris-Choat hasn’t done in sailing. She’s a two-time Olympian, first woman to be part of a team to win a round the world race, world distance record breaker and the first woman to skipper a GC32 team. And she’s not done yet.

The Northlander talks about how she stumbled into the sport, how she found herself at the Atlanta Olympics only two-and-a-half years after committing to an Olympic campaign, her long association with the legendary Tracy Edwards and what’s still left on her bucket list. There have been plenty of highlights along the way, like breaking the 24-hour distance world record and winning the Oryx Quest, but also major disappointments, not least of all when Royal & Sun Alliance dismasted deep in the Southern Ocean when on track to claim the Jules Verne Trophy. Sharon was on the helm when the maxi catamaran lost its rig and details what happened and why she still has regrets about that day nearly 25 years later.

Sharon is an extraordinary sailor who is largely unheralded in this country. She’s deeply passionate about the sport and the need to provide greater opportunities for women and is always searching for what might be around the corner.

Ep 47 - Jo Aleh

Ep 47 - Jo Aleh

Jo Aleh always maintained she hadn’t retired when she stepped away from top-level sailing after the 2016 Rio Olympics but it was still a surprise in some circles when she announced earlier this year she was targeting a third Olympic medal in Paris. Rather than do it in the 470, the boat in which she and Polly Powrie excelled for so long, Jo has taken up a fresh challenge and jumped in a 49erFX with fellow Rio medallist Molly Meech.

Jo talks in this podcast about what drew her back to the top level of the sport, what it has been like trying to master a new boat and form a new partnership, what it will take for the pair of them to win a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and how she will deal with expectations. She also delves into how she coped with the last five years, when she combined office work with coaching, and talks about what she’s trying to achieve in her role as chair of World Sailing’s athletes’ commission. One of the more important conversations we had was around the struggles Jo had with her health during her Rio campaign and how she approaches that part of her life now, which could be valuable for any young sailor, parent or coach, and we kicked things off by talking about her involvement in Live Ocean Racing, which was announced earlier this week.

Ep 46 - Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (49er sailing)

Ep 46 - Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (49er sailing)

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are never far from the action, whether it’s the America’s Cup, SailGP or in their environmental work, but the spotlight for this episode of Broad Reach Radio is on their Olympic sailing in the 49er.

We take a look back on where it all began for one of the world’s most successful partnerships, some of the challenges they faced in the early days when some wondered if they could actually realise their potential and how they went on to become so dominant. They delve into that golden period between the London and Rio Olympics, when they were virtually unbeatable, what brought them back for a crack at another Olympic medal in Tokyo and how they dealt with the impact of Covid-19 and the postponement of the Olympic Games. Pete and Blair also give an insight into two of the most dramatic races they’ve been involved in, the medal race at the 2019 world championships on home waters and last year’s medal race at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ep 45 - Steve Ashley and the 1979 Fastnet Race

Ep 45 - Steve Ashley and the 1979 Fastnet Race

Steve Ashley was an 18-year-old sailmaker living in England when he was asked to crew on a 34-foot yacht for the 1979 Fastnet Race. Little did he know, like the rest of those scattered on the 303 boats who took part that year, he was about to be involved in one of the most notorious races of all time and one that led to the largest combined rescue operation since the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.

Steve talks about the leadup to that race, the fact they received no warning about the ferocity of the storm they were sailing into, what happened when hurricane-strength winds hit in the middle of the night and how he and the rest of the crew on board went about ensuring their survival when others perished.

Steve has found himself in dicey situations many times, and also talks about a notorious passage he had from Bermuda to New York, as well as his role in the early days of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Yachting NZ: Briefings - Dec 15 - Big P class fleets; Keelboats back in action; Erica Dawson podcast

yachting nz podcast

New Zealand is blessed with some of the most amazing coastlines and waterways but we don't always look after them as well as we should. That's part of the reason why Yachting New Zealand have launched the Clean Club programme, a three-star rating system for clubs to become environmentally focused. We've partnered with the New Zealand SailGP Team in this important initiative, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the world, and it's also been endorsed by Sailors for the Sea.

We lead this final edition of Briefings for the year on the Clean Club programme and also bring you regular features like Regional Roundup and Dave's Desk as well as a look at why the P Class is enjoying a resurgence in this country.

It's been our pleasure to keep you updated throughout the year, even though it has been particularly challenging for many of us, and look forward to reconnecting again in mid-January. We hope you enjoy some time with family and friends over the Christmas break - and plenty of time out on the water. As always, let us know if you've got any news or suggestions by emailing . Merry Christmas.

The four Yachting New Zealand regional development managers take a look at what has been happening in their areas and also remind you of how important it is to recognise volunteers.

We've seen a few changes to the way yachting and boating clubs operate recently so have provided more clarity around what is an event and a gathering.

Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie looks back on the year and talks about why he's feeling optimistic ahead of 2022.

Auckland has been awash with sails in recent times after more than 100 days of lockdown, especially with the return of keelboat racing.

Covid-19 been both a blessing and a curse for the P Class as the traditional Kiwi class gears up for next month's Tanner and Tauranga Cups.

It's not hard to look good both on and off the water, and Yachting NZ have made it even easier with some outrageous discounts on NZL Sailing Team supporter gear.

Olympian and New Zealand SailGP member Erica Dawson talked about her year of ups and downs on the Yachting New Zealand podcast.

Imagery is vital to make ocean conservation messaging resonate. Project Kahurangi will be a powerful resource, giving conservation groups across Aotearoa access to compelling photos and videos.

Race Officials make a huge contribution to yacht clubs around New Zealand and a number recently qualified or had their qualifications revalidated.

Get close to the action on and off the water by offering to help out at February's Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta at the Wakatere Boating Club.

Being a race coach is immensely rewarding and Yachting New Zealand have now made it easier for more people to get involved.

SailGP will bring the high-octane foiling catamarans to New Zealand for at least four years, starting in 2023 .

The first weekend of the new Covid Protection Framework was ushered in with some great racing and hospitality at Queen Charlotte earlier this month.

YNZ are holding a national match racing umpire seminar in February in conjunction with the Youth International Match Racing Champs.

A smaller than normal but perfectly-formed fleet made it out for a fantastic day's racing in the twice-postponed Young 88 Owners Champs recently.

Anything from a Starling and Sunburst to Feva and Farr 3.7 will line up for Sunday's third attempt at the inaugural Bridge to Bean race.

Robbie McCutcheon and his GCH Racing crew added another match racing title to their collection by taking out the Auckland Match Racing Champs.

They jumped to rescue American Magic after their dramatic capsize and now they have been awarded a prize to help rescue the world's coral reefs.

There are going to be two important changes to the prohibited list published by WADA for 2022 which athletes and support people need to be aware of.

With races for anything from tugboats to mullet boats, it's no wonder the Ports of Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta is one of the world's biggest one-day regattas.

America’s Cup: Team NZ beat Alinghi Red Bull Racing in choppy sea state as task becomes clear for challengers

Christopher Reive

When the final day of the Louis Vuitton Cup round-robins gets underway tomorrow, there will be two key storylines to follow.

For America’s Cup defender Team New Zealand, it will be their last day of racing before they compete in the Cup match in October. For two of the teams hoping to challenge the defender in that match, tomorrow morning’s racing will be their last chance to survive the first elimination of the regatta.

This morning, the Kiwi crew sailed a mostly clean match to beat Alinghi Red Bull Racing by 38 seconds in their lone race of the day.

“We’d happily keep racing,” Team NZ port helmsman Nathan Outteridge said on the broadcast of tomorrow being their last race for a month.

“We’ve got to gear up for tomorrow. It’s going to be a big one against American Magic. It’ll be a bit sad to be in the last race for a little while, but it’s great to see the conditions turning it on and getting some good racing in today.”

Team New Zealand continue to show they know how to best sail their boat in various conditions, with a choppy sea state and steady winds providing a slightly different look for the sailors than has been seen in the regatta so far.

With the crews battling to get the best position to control owning the righthand side of the course today, Alinghi Red Bull Racing got the better of the start and were well-positioned to cover when Team New Zealand tacked early in the leg.

But by the time the two crossed for the first time, it was the Kiwi crew who were in front.

While a sticky moment when rounding the second gate saw them touchdown and lose a lot of speed, Team NZ recovered quickly and continued to forge ahead.

The second half saw the Kiwis extend their lead in the race, which was ultimately won by a fairly comfortable margin.

“We just were a little late on our final trigger pull off the start so gave up a bit of space to windward to Alinghi, so we’ll have to review that one and work out how we can do that a bit better,” Outteridge said.

“It was really good to get the pass on the upwind [leg], and with these waves out here today it’s pretty hard to control the leeway at times when you’re going around the bottom mark. A little skid keeps it interesting.”

Alinghi go into the final day of racing as one of the two teams trying to ward off elimination, but in the box seat to do so.

The Swiss go into the final day of the round-robins with two points, one ahead of French syndicate Orient Express Racing Team. Each team will have just one race tomorrow, and with Orient Express against Ineos Britannia in the first race of the day, Alinghi will know what they have to do before their race begins.

Should the French beat the British, Alinghi will need to beat Italian team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. Should both teams finish on two points, they will have a one-off tiebreaker race which will send the loser home. Luna Rossa, Ineos Britannia and American Magic have all secured a place in the semifinals.

The Italians dropped their first race against a fellow challenger in the last match of the day this morning, beaten by the steadily improving Ineos Britannia crew.

In the day’s other races, the Italians beat American Magic, Ineos Britannia beat Alinghi, and American Magic beat Orient Express.

Day seven results

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (Italy) beat American Magic (USA) by 22sec

Ineos Britannia (UK) beat Alinghi Red Bull Racing (Switzerland) by 53sec

American Magic beat Orient Express Racing Team (France) by 15sec

Emirates Team New Zealand (NZ) beat Alinghi Red Bull Racing by 38sec

Ineos Britannia beat Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli by 25sec

Louis Vuitton Cup standings

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli 6-1 (qualified for semifinals)

Ineos Britannia 5-2 (qualified for semifinals)

American Magic 4-3 (qualified for semifinals)

Alinghi Red Bull Racing 2-5

Orient Express Racing Team 1-6

Races featuring Emirates Team NZ (7-2) do not count towards the Louis Vuitton Cup standings and have not been factored in above.

Christopher Reive joined the Herald sports team in 2017, bringing the same versatility to his coverage as he does to his sports viewing habits.

A billionaire NFL owner's superyacht is now available for charter. It'll cost you.

NFL owner Shahid Khan's superyacht Kismet is available for charter at $3 million a week.

Kismet, which will debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, features luxury amenities and can host 12 guests.

Added costs for provisions, gratuities, and taxes can raise the weekly charter cost to $5.4 million.

Want to vacation like a billionaire? You can — for $3 million a week.

The superyacht belonging to Shahid Khan, the owner of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars who is worth $13.3 billion, according to Forbes, is officially available for charter.

Kismet, Khan's new yacht, will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month.

The 122-meter yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests — and a crew of 36 available to serve them — and, like any superyacht worth its weight, has some special amenities .

A "Balinese-inspired" spa features a hammam, sauna, and cryotherapy chamber, as well as a massage table and chromotherapy bathtub offering some sort of color-related treatment. For more active wellness, there's a gym, basketball court, and pickleball court.

There are three pools — two are jacuzzis — spread over six decks, four outdoor showers, four bars, four fireplaces, two fire pits, and one helipad. For your viewing pleasure, there is an outdoor cinema, and for your listening pleasure, a DJ booth and grand piano.

And because billionaires love to play, there is a suite of water toys aboard, including Jet Skis, SeaBobs, e-foils, and WaveRunners.

Khan is a committed superyacht owner. His previous superyacht, also named Kismet, was purchased by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt last year. While its final sales price was not disclosed, it was listed for about $160 million. Renamed Whisper, the yacht was built by the same German shipyard as the new Kismet, Lürssen, and measured 95 meters.

"The yacht has exceeded all expectations of the client for whom we have built his third yacht in total," Peter Lürssen, a managing partner at Lürssen, said in a statement about the newest Kismet.

Kismet is the largest yacht on display at the Monaco Yacht Show, which will feature 120 superyachts . Renaissance, the second largest at 112 meters, charters for the same weekly price of $3 million.

While the nine-figure sales prices of these yachts make their seven-figure charter rates seem like a bargain, renting out a superyacht is not for the faint of wallet. In addition to the charter fee, there are costs associated with provisions which can come to as much as 40% of the fee; gratuities, as much as 20% of the fee; and taxes, also as much as 20%. That means a week aboard the Kismet can actually cost as much as $5.4 million.

  • Air NZ, Mitre 10 get lowest climate scores in Otago University rankings

Researchers at the University of Otago have rated 21 big companies on their climate targets , with Air New Zealand and Mitre 10 among the worst and Fonterra among the best.

The ratings were based on whether the companies' plans were transparent and in keeping with putting the brakes on global heating before the planet hits 2C hotter.

Companies were rated on whether they had set goals to cut carbon, how clear and detailed their steps were to reach those goals, and whether the goals were compatible with the international push to keep heating at manageable levels.

Climate Action Tracker Aotearoa assessed the major banks, electricity companies, some retailers and major oil companies.

Companies scored better if they included emissions from their supply chains in their targets. For example, a supermarket would score better if it tried to shrink the greenhouse gases from farmers growing the food it sells, rather than just from lighting and cooling its own stores.

Air New Zealand (which recently abandoned its climate target for 2030 ), Mitre 10 and meat producer Alliance each scored 1.5 out of 10, making them the poorest-rated of the 21 companies.

In the middle, hovering at 5 or 6, were Z Energy, The Warehouse, Silver Fern Farms, oil and gas producer Todd Corporation, fertiliser maker Ravensdown, Kiwibank, ExxonMobil and Westpac, Genesis Energy, ASB and BNZ.

Meridian Energy and Fonterra were the best rated on 8, followed by Woolworths, Contact Energy, OMV, ANZ bank and BP.

Project leader Professor Sara Walton said the scoring method allowed big oil companies to do fairly well, because it did not count the sheer size of planet-heating emissions a company had created.

Some fossil fuel companies had hundreds of pages of climate plans, she said.

"If you can set your targets clearly and you have got some plans and you're reporting, you're actually going okay in that scoring.

"Some of the oil companies are international, and they have international reporting as well, particularly our BPs and Exxon Mobils.

"That's where we want to be reporting on more than we're doing."

The researchers had started collecting historical emissions data whenever there was public information available, and hoped to publish that this year.

"We will be adding that in, and looking at what companies are actually emitting and whether that increases or decreases over the years. That will start to show us the impact we are missing at the moment."

Supermarket giant Foodstuffs and other big retailers could not be rated for lack of time, Walton said.

The work received no outside funding and other companies' ratings were in danger of becoming out of date, so the authors decided to publish what they had and add more soon, she said.

"We wanted to try and get our big emitters and then get a few others in that sector. Foodstuffs is an obvious one that's missing ... and that's probably the next one to do.

"This is just one moment in time."

Banking was a particular focus of the report, since the banks were grappling with the climate impact of their loan books and new climate reporting laws.

"Each time we want to try and add a different sector, so we're thinking of adding the building sector as a big emitter across the motu."

Walton said she wanted to use public information to help people demystify the confusing world of corporate climate reporting.

"It's hard to know if they are working in a way that is needed to keep global temperatures at a manageable level, and to also figure out if they are greenwashing or actually making an impact that will meet their targets."

The university said the Climate Action Tracker was a collaboration between Otago, the Eastern Institute of Technology, and John Lang, of the UK's Net Zero Tracker.
