NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Gateway YDWG-02

Regular price $249.00

The NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Gateway allows you to see data from a NMEA 2000 marine digital network on a PC or smartphone. With it, you get marine network data including vessel course, speed, position, wind speed and direction, water depth, AIS messages from vessels and aircrafts and other navigation data in popular software applications.

yacht devices nmea2000 wifi gateway ydwg 02n

The Device creates its own Wi-Fi network (with about 30 meters range in open spaces) or it can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network. In the second case, the coverage depends on coverage of the base network; laptops and PCs can be connected to Wi-Fi routers (and the Gateway) by Ethernet; and you can configure remote access to Gateway over the Internet.

Configuring the gateway is easy with any Wi-Fi enabled device (laptop or smartphone) with any web browser. The Device's settings can be reset to the factory values using the hidden reset button.

The Gateway supports TCP and UDP network protocols (both can be enabled at the same time). For UDP protocol, the number of clients (physical devices or software applications) is unlimited.

 The Device has a bi-directional converter between NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 protocol. NMEA 0183 protocol is widely supported in marine applications dating back to the last millennium. So the Device is compatible with virtually all marine mobile applications (except applications designed for use only with specific hardware) and with most popular PC applications.

  • NMEA 0183 log
  • Data page with circular course and wind gauges
  • Twin engine RPM, temperature and fuel rate (day palette)
  • Depth graph and text data bars
  • Customization of a data page layout

Moreover, you do not need to install applications to view real-time vessel data. We added colorful, web-based gauges to built-in administrative web site, and now you can view wind,   engine (and fuel rate!) , course, speed,   depth and other data   right from a browser. You can   customize any page's layout   and its sets of data bars. You can even watch NMEA logs! Save on apps, save on additional instrument displays and monitor your boat from your sofa with a smartphone! No internet connection is required and it is free. See   this guide to learn more   about built-in web gauges.

  • Allows control of Raymarine SeaTalk NG autopilots via NMEA 0183
  • NMEA Data Servers (TCP or UDP network protocols; NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 or Debug data)
  • Individual filters for each server, 14 filter lists in total
  • Diagnostics data available in browser
  • Works as an Access Point or can be connected to existing Wi-Fi networks

The Gateway also supports RAW protocol which allows transferring of any NMEA 2000 messages (including proprietary messages) to applications and back. You can record messages to a .CAN file and/or monitor in real time with free   CAN Log Viewer   software (Mac OS X, Windows, Linux). It can be useful for NMEA 2000 or J1939 networks   setup and troubleshooting .

The recorded .CAN file can be converted to a .DAT format and processed with   YDVR Converter   software to convert NMEA 2000 data to GPX tracks, spreadsheets and other formats. Of course, it is not as convenient as recording data with the   Voyage Recorder , but it is suitable for tests and trials, etc.

The RAW protocol is open and is supported also in our   USB Gateway . We hope that it will become popular among software developers, because it is very simple and free.

The Gateway:

  • can duplicate or replace broken instruments or complement obsolete instruments;
  • has   built-in web gauges , only a browser is required to view real-time vessel data;
  • can act as a   NMEA 2000 wireless extender   and allows joining of two or more physical networks;
  • can pass any message (including proprietary) between NMEA 2000 and a PC application by RAW protocol;
  • with NMEA 0183 protocol, provides compatibility with virtually all marine applications, including   Navionics ;
  • allows to control   Raymarine SeaTalk NG autopilots   from NMEA 0183;
  • is compatible with NMEA 2000, J1939 and Volvo Penta EVC networks;
  • supports TCP and UDP protocols, works as a Wi-Fi Access Point or can be connected to an existing Wi-Fi network;
  • supports firmware updates over Wi-Fi and diagnostic data logging;
  • free diagnostic software   for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux is supplied;
  • contains an internal web server for diagnostics and configuration.

The Gateway is designed for operation in an NMEA 2000 network and is compatible with a wide range of equipment supporting this protocol. Raymarine SeaTalk NG, Simrad SimNet, and Furuno CAN networks are branded versions of NMEA 2000 and differ only by connector type. Garmin uses the NMEA 2000 Micro connector in its devices, which is compatible with the DeviceNet Micro connector.

Gateway is supplied with different types of connectors (see the   User Guide ), making it possible to connect it to networks of different manufacturers without any adapters.

The Wi-Fi antenna is located inside under the LED. For additional technical details, please see the   User Guide   and   FAQ .

as the gateway.
Using OCPN "Connections" add a new; "Network".
Now you've to find how the gateway transmit the NMEA0183 messages.
If UDP you need the port number. In O select UDP and enter the port.
If TCP you need the address and the port. In O select TCP and enter the address and port.
-> Apply. Check that the new connection is enabled.

but all is good on UDP. Haven't used it underway yet but it positioned our at our slip and a heading.

I am now trying to find the Canadian for Lake Ontario/Great Lakes. I could not see them in the O directory. If you have any info it would be appreciated.

I am very impressed with this and will be making a donation today.

Thank much

Putin on the Ritz…?

I realize that Moscow is on the Volga River, which connects to the Caspian Sea, but I’m wondering how foreign vessels can reach it? Or do foreign travel companies just buy a yacht that’s already "in the system"?

June 17, 2012 at 5:19 pm

From the Caspian Sea, Gary, yachts come up the Volga then on to the Oka River and enter a tributary call the Moskva ("Moscow" in Russian) River. Alternate route is Volga to man-made Moscow Canal (which connects Volga to Moskva River). The big superyachts can’t get into the city limits because the river is only 3 inches deep. Just outside of the city, however, the water is 6 meters deep, perfect for large yachts. Yacht passengers easily travel into the city by limousine. (I imagine thoughts of hovercrafts, etc are a consideration for someday…) James Bond, anyone?

Moscow subway WiBOX antenna with Cisco MIMO 4x4 Access Points installation

One of our Customers faced the problem of increasing the real throughput in the communication in the Moscow subway. They needed connection between a moving train and stationary points in a tunnel, with NLOS conditions and roaming between APs in the tunnel. The system is based on the Cisco 5 GHz Access Points of Cisco Aironet 3600 Series AP units and WiBOX PA D4M5-20HVX MIMO 4x4 directional antennas. The installation has been done at the standard of 802.11n on MIMO 4x4 technology (exactly with 3SS + one stream for a beamforming).

One side of the link was located in the train (Pic. 1), the other point was placed in a stationary point in the subway tunnel (Pic. 2 and Pic. 3).

The goal was to get the maximum throughput between a moving point in the train and stationary points in the metro. In the tunnel there was a necessity to use the most directional antennas as it’s possible. The choice was WiBOX PA D4M5-20HVX MIMO 4x4 directional antenna.

It’s antenna based on the PTFE microstrip substrate, so it allows to minimize the antenna dimensions (4x4 antenna is housed in 29 x 48 [cm] enclosure),and gives stable parameters in a wide frequency range. As writen above Cisco Aironet 3600 offers 3 spatial streams + one connector for beamforming. In this case there is possibility to achieve theoretical max. throughput of 450Mbps. Single polarity applications cannot be used in this location because of many reflections from the tunel walls, here was necessary a good solution which Cisco brings to their customers. Cisco Engineers decides to use 40 MHz channels for this application, the MCS possible to use in given conditions was max 23 (max for 3SS). The distance for the test (between moving train and a point inside the subway) was max. 360m, the speed of moving train was 75 km/h (~47mph), what was additional disadvantage for the link and have influence for the final result. In that installation there were set up 3 Access Points on the train way, the distances between APs was 260m and 360m. The standard of 802.11n was designed for stationary points only, the test is some of an experimental 802.11n application, finally with unexpectable good result.

The maximum stable TCP transfer achieved was over 100Mbps, without a big changes (Pic.4).

As it’s seen from the Pic. 4 the TCP transfer is stable and the average level is over 100Mbps, what is very good result taking into consideration conditions where the test had a place. The train was moving with the speed of 75km/h (~ 47mph). Maximum theoretical throughput (for two stationary points) is 450 Mbps on the MCS23, see the article . MIMO 4x4 is the best solution (of 802.11n standard) for the places where is a lot of reflection obstacles. It carries 4 different spatial streams, so it requires antenna 4x4 to maximalize the streams separation. Strong multipath effect needs a good radio to take advantages of this fact (in SISO applications it would decrease signal). The main point is the separation between connectors in the antenna and in a result the highest possible level of separation between spatial streams to avoid big interferences. The antenna of WiBOX PA D4M5- 20HVX offers 32 dBi of port-to-port isolation. The antenna is predicted to work with MIMO 4x4 or with „lower” versions of MIMO technology. In CISCO Aironet 3600 we face with the MIMO 3x3 technology + one connector for the beamforming, what is the technology for improving the signal quality, not improoving the throughput. For this application there are also needed antennas 4x4.

Another interesting thing is the way to get the continuity and stability in the throughput in roam from one base station to the next one. It’s possible due to CCKM (Cisco Centralized Key Management) which allows for fast roaming. In described installation three WiBOXes PA D4M5-20HVX with Cisco Aironet 3600 were located in the tunel one next to another. As the train was moving, the conditions were changing, there was also situations when there was NLOS conditions, which shows the advantages of MIMO technology.

All the test results as well as the photos have been provided by Cisco Engineers from Moscow, we thank a lot for the common work.

NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Router YDNR-02

The Router connects all marine and mobile devices easily. It supports all popular marine protocols, is compatible with virtually all marine software, and even allows management of your vessel from a web browser without internet connection or installed software.

The Router is equipped with NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk ports, two NMEA 0183 ports, has three TCP/UDP data servers and a built-in web server, where you can easily configure it or update the firmware. It creates its own Wi-Fi network (Access Point) or can be connected to a boat's existing Wi-Fi.

NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Router YDNR-02

The Web Gauges page of the built-in web site allows managing of a digital switching equipment and real time viewing of vessel data using a web browser on PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone; no internet connection or app installation is required. If you have access to your boat Wi-Fi network over the internet, Web Gauges are a ready solution to monitor and manage your vessel. And even control the autopilot!

Data page with circular course and wind gauges

The Router has the best bi-directional converters between NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183 and SeaTalk, with the widest range of supported messages on the market. Routing of data flows can be easily managed from a web interface (see Picture 8), and individual message filters on each port and data server allows limiting the traffic for low speed ports or block specific devices, NMEA 2000 messages, SeaTalk datagrams or NMEA 0183 sentences.

NMEA data servers (TCP or UDP network protocols; NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 (RAW) or Debug data protocols)

One of the data servers can be configured for Debug protocol, to inspect data flows routed to this port right from a web browser . The free PC software supplied allows viewing the CAN bus (NMEA 2000, J1939) data, manage NMEA 2000 devices and record messages to a file.

The Router automatically records your track with weather, depth and other data to the internal memory (up to 12000 points). These data can be saved from the internal web site to GPX (for Garmin MapSource, Google Earth or other cartographic applications) or CSV (spreadsheet) files.
