What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Zakynthos
Navigating the Ionian Sea around Zakynthos provides an opportunity to experience the island in a unique way, and at Yachting.Rent, we’re here to ensure you make the right choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran for your adventure.
A sailing boat offers an authentic sailing experience, perfect for those who love the feeling of being at one with the sea. These boats provide a thrill as they navigate the waves and deliver a more intimate connection with the water. They are ideal for experienced sailors seeking the traditional thrills of sailing.
On the other hand, catamarans, with their dual-hull design, are an excellent choice for those seeking stability and space. They offer larger living areas, making them great for families or larger groups. Their design also provides a smoother sailing experience, making them a popular choice for those who may be new to sailing or prefer a more laid-back journey.
Whichever you choose, our team at Yachting.Rent is ready to guide you, ensuring your yachting adventure around Zakynthos is as memorable and enjoyable as possible. Whether it’s feeling the wind in your hair on a sailing boat or enjoying the spacious comfort of a catamaran, we’re here to bring your dream voyage to life.

Greece - Zakynthos
Zakynthos is also one of the two Greek islands (Rhodes is the other one) with the highest, year-round duration of sunshine.
Zakynthos, the third largest island in the Ioanian Sea, is only ever described in superlatives. Its famed beach, Navagio, is consistently rated as one of Europe’s best – including by the respected Condé Nast Traveler – and is one of the most photographed spots in the Mediterranean.
Zakynthos – Top yacht charter destination
One of Zakynthos’s most appealing aspects is that it is easily accessible by yacht. Larger passenger liners are able enter the bay but cannot approach the beach due to weight restrictions.
A luxury yacht will not only solve this problem but ensure a degree of privacy and exclusivity that is tough to beat.
Zakynthos – Things to Do
Some of the Mediterranean’s deepest spots — in some cases 4000m deep — are found in the Ionian Sea, making it a paradise for diving aficionados. The south-east of Zakynthos is home to many of these.
Octopus and Barracuda Reefs, the Arch of Triumph and the Keri caves are just some of the renowned spots. The water is luminous, allowing for a high degree of visibility and a treasure of delights waiting to be discovered.
Another highlight is the Blue Cave, an electric-blue wonderland, especially in the early mornings. Small boats can easily access the cave or you can simply swim in and enjoy some unsurpassed snorkelling.
It can get busy though, so if you prefer your water adventures more tranquil., try Limni or Keri caves. You will be dazzled by marine life in technicolour: trevallies, sea breams, octopi, moray eels, and an array of exotic tropical fish. You might even be lucky enough to spot some turtles, for which the area is known.
Be sure to also sample some of Zakynthos’s famed wine, or take a few bottles home as a souvenir. Currants and strawberries are other natural products for which Zakynthos’s is celebrated. You will find finger-licking desserts containing these delights in many of the stores and local tavernas.
Vasilikos boasts some exquisite beaches, such as Gerakas and Banana, known for their natural beauty and tranquility. Gerakas also draws scores of turtle fans as it is a famous turtle-nesting spot.
Zakynthos – The Gourmet Experience
With one town, Zakynthos itself, and around 44 villages, there is a plethora of traditional food on offer, be it rustic or gourmet.
Zakynthians are proud of their cuisine. Think fresh, organic, home-grown ingredients in typical Mediterranean dishes — all lip-smackingly fresh and authentic.
Head to Kalamaki for some of the best eateries, including Massa Mediterranean Cuisine and Essence Restaurant, to sample some traditional fare.
Insider tip If you are a fan of more structured entertainment offerings, head to Tsilivi in the east of the island. This settlement has a golf course, Splash Fun water park, a ceramic art studio and a branch of Relax Spa & Beauty. Just the thing for a fun-filled family break.

The third largest island in the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos Island (Zante) was known by the Venetians as the 'Flower of the East' thanks to its lush greenery that makes the Ionian island so fertile and beautiful. Today, it is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Greece thanks in part to the international airport that has links right across Europe but mostly due to its sheer beauty.
Though many tourists won't get much further than its beautiful beaches and renowned nightlife in Zakynthos Town, this jewel of an island has so much more to offer. Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), accessed from Porto Vromi beach by water taxi, is a sandy beach only accessible by sea and would be quite beautiful in its own right even without the wrecked cigarette smuggler's ship that lies in the middle.
Close to the main marina on Zante, Agios Nikolaos Beach is one of the best on the island with its range of water sports available, or just to chill out in the turquoise waters. Elsewhere on Zakynthos you will find protected Caretta Caretta sea turtles and a species of seal that only lives in the Ionian Sea. Diving and snorkelling is an absolute must as there is at least as much to take in under the water as there is above!
Explore Zakynthos By Renting A Yacht
So, on your bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter out of Zakynthos, where else would you like to go? On nearby mainland Greece, the historic town of Preveza has over 60km of beaches around the Ambracian Gulf, and ancient ruins dating back millennia too.
The other major Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Lefkada are worthy of long pauses too. Cephalonia was the setting for the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin thanks to its stunning scenery and beautiful fishing villages. Sandy beaches and a large cave system make this, the largest of the Ionian Islands, a destination you shouldn't miss on a Zakynthos yacht charter.
Between Cephalonia and mainland Greece lies Lefkada. Connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge, this is a fun filled tourist island with excellent facilities, whether you moor at Nydri or the largest marina on the Ionian, Lefkada Town Marina.
As well as the larger islands, the smaller islands of the Ionian are always worth a pause too. Often away from the main tourist track, islands such as Kastos, Meganisi and Arkoudi aren't a long sail from the main island, but will give you an authentic taste of Greek island life. On a longer run north you can hit Paxos and Antipaxos, both only accessible by sea and the latter largely a large olive grove.
A Zakynthos yacht charter will give you the opportunity to explore these islands over a week or two at your own pace, enjoying the placid and great sailing conditions of the Ionian Sea as you do.

From here, south, then north around the top of the island to Vasiliki on Lefkada, and then the next day head north again to Gaios on Paxos. Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Zakynthos
The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Unlike the Aegean, the Ionian Sea is dominated by the Bora - the same wind that affects nearby Croatia. In summer this is far more benign and far more sailing friendly than the often beefy Meltemi. Building to a fun F5-6 in the afternoon from a zephyr in the morning, you can almost time your daily sailing by it.
The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Ionian boat rental.
Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. With the wetter climate than the Aegean this is less of a problem so with the warm seas could be at least as good as the earlier months of the year.
Sailing Weather In Zakynthos
April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes cooler northerly winds, though the southerly Bora kicks in in around early May. There is more rainfall here than on Aegean Greece but you will soon find that a blessed relief from the heat!
Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40 - often hotter than the Aegean. The Bora often adds to the heat with its tropical origins.
September-October: The seas remain warm, as does the air. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s though can touch 30C from time to time.
What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
What are the Marinas on Zakynthos?
The main marina on Zakynthos is at Agios Nikolaos on the NE coast of the island. Taking 255 yachts, this is far bigger than the Port of Zakynthos in Zakynthos Town that only takes 30 vessels.
When are the best times to hire a boat in Zakynthos?
To avoid the summer heat and crowds, if you can get to Lefkas Island after autumn school term begins you will find the seas still warm, the air more comfortable and the marinas less crowded.
Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Zante?
You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
What happens if my Yacht breaks down?
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.
What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Zakynthos?
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

What is the best time to visit Zakynthos?
Zakynthos has a typical Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The most popular time to visit Zakynthos is during the summer, especially in July and August. This coincides with the summer holidays as well as the hottest temperatures. Therefore, if you want to visit at a time with fewer tourists, we recommend you avoid those two months.
Should I charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?
Many yachts in Zakynthos have the option to come with or without a skipper. While it can add an extra cost to your charter, a skipper can bring many benefits to your overall experience. For instance, they will handle all the technical aspects of sailing, including docking and anchoring the yacht. Therefore, you just have to sit back and relax and soak in the Greek sun. Moreover, a skipper will be familiar with the regional area, so they can show you around the best parts of Zakynthos. Ultimately, a skipper will provide you with a more comfortable and enjoyable experience, making for an unforgettable holiday.
The sights in Zakynthos
There is so much to see and discover in Zakynthos that it can be difficult to know where to start. For this reason, we have come up with our recommendations to help inspire your holiday.
Firstly, a luxury yacht charter in Zakynthos is incomplete without visiting the beautiful beaches on the island. For instance, the most famous beach is Navagio Beach. What makes this beach so special is that there is a historic shipwreck. The contrast between the cerulean blue waters and the old ship is guaranteed to leave you stunned. You can also visit Laganas Bay, known for its sea turtles. Apart from its various attractions, the beach is also a protected area for loggerhead turtles. If you are really interested, you can even visit the Zakynthos National Marine Park for more information on the fascinating creatures!
When you want to disembark from your private yacht charter, make sure to walk around and admire the natural scenery of Zakynthos. In fact, the Venetians used to call the island the “Flower of the East” because of the island’s abundance of flowers. With over 7,000 species of flowers in 405 square kilometres squared of land, you will be enveloped with an enchanting floral scent as you explore the island. If you want to get to know more about Greek history and culture, be sure to visit the Museum of Dionysios Solomos and the Byzantine Museum. Otherwise, you can simply wander around Saint Markos Square and discover the local shops, picturesque architecture and delicious gastronomy. Be sure to try their famous nougat and Tlilikourda.
Nearby destinations to explore
Not only is Zakynthos a great place to visit on its own, but its proximity to other beautiful islands makes a yacht charter even more worthwhile! If you have time for day trips or longer voyages, we recommend exploring other Ionian islands such as Corfu or Lefkada. Alternatively, you can see other Greek islands such as the Cyclades, the Dodecanese or the Sporades. If you want to discover more than Greece, venture to neighbouring countries such as Italy or Albania! Set sail on the sparkling waters and see all there is to see.

Zakynthos is an Ionian Island in Greece with wild landscapes, unspoilt coastlines and wonderful cosmopolitan towns. Enjoy the idyllic beauty of Greece both on board your superyacht and when you go ashore on a Zakynthos private yacht charter holiday. With its long sandy beaches, gorgeous countryside, the famous Shipwreck Beach along with stunning architecture, Zakynthos has everything and more you could possibly wish for. Go here for the full Greece yacht charter guide .
If your yacht charter party is torn between an itinerary filled with cultural sites and exhibitions or a beach-side holiday having fun using all the water toys, Zakynthos is the perfect location to satisfy everyone's desires: Turtles swim in turquoise waters and nest on the beaches, and snorkellers and scuba divers can get up close to eagle rays, octopus, scorpionfish, reef sharks and lobster. Zakynthos has arguably the most famous beached wreck in all of the Mediterranean at Navagio Beach, and once the tourists have vanished for the evening you can have this setting all to yourself.
In town, the Giatras Museum-Dionysios Art Gallery is a gem of a find, providing the local history in a three-hundred year old building that still has the old olive press. The gold-gilded Virgin Mary Faneromeni Church is a breath-taking labour of love, while picturesque Anafonitria Monastery has a garden just as beautiful as its interior where guests can rest.
As mentioned, the island is a great place for snorkelling, diving, shopping, dining and awesome nightlife. It’s known as Zante, Zacinto or Zakinthos and is the southernmost island in this zone. The north-western part of the island has barren mountain peaks while the centre of the island is verdant with blossoms that gave it the name Flower of the East or “Fioro di Levante”. When the Venetians ruled Zakynthos, they created the charming architecture of the Byzantine buildings, museums and traditional piazzas like the one in Solomos Square.
In the south of the island there’s a Mediterranean party atmosphere, luxury resorts and beautiful beaches of white sand. From Easter until the end of October this hot spot is a favourite with visitors as well as superyachts. You can still find a quiet spot on the beach or in a secluded cove. The Vasilikos peninsula has some gorgeous countryside, seaside towns and beaches while the city of Yerakas, only accessible by water, is also very popular luxury yacht charter spot.
While in Zakynthos do visit the Shipwreck Cove or Navagio Beach. The ice-white sand on this beach is surrounded by limestone cliffs and azure blue waters. It’s a good idea to anchor your crwed luxury yacht here in the morning or late in the afternoon as it does get rather busy with other visitors.
The protected area of Laganas Bay on the island is a breeding site for the endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtles. You might see a hatchling taking its first steps into the sea however, stand at a good distance just in case you frighten them.

The Ionian Island of Zakynthos represents undoubtedly the most beautiful and exotic yacht charter destination of the Greek Islands. Embodying the unspoilt coastline and wild nature as well as the modern indulgence of its lively cosmopolitan towns, Zakynthos offers you a perfect blend for your luxury charter vacation. You can experience the idyllic beauty of the Ionian Sea with emerald turquoise crystalline waters and lush green nature ashore, from the worldwide known Shipwreck Cove “Navagio” Beach to secluded coves and bays ideal for snorkelling and exploration on your private yacht charter voyage.
Find out why Zakynthos is worldwide beloved due to its glorified beauty! As the southernmost island of the idyllic Ionian Sea complex, Zakynthos is characterised by its lush green wild landscape, beautiful hilltop countryside and turquoise water fine sandy beaches. The Island landscape is divided into three unique parts. Its northwestern area is overwhelmed in barren mountain peaks whereas its heart is covered in verdant green nature, blossoming flora. As the Venetians named it, it is the “Fioro di Levante”, the Flower of the East. Throughout the island we can notice the impact of the historical Venetian occupation, mostly evident in Zakynthos distinctive architecture. The coastal capital is renowned for its Byzantine buildings, museums and traditional Squares as the Solomos Piazza. The Islands name derives from Italian as well, known as Zante.
Moving to the southern area we can observe the Mediterranean atmosphere of the island, embellished with luxury resorts and extensive white sandy beaches, surrounded by the Emerald Blue Ionian Sea. Some of the most famous seaside towns such as the picturesque city of Yerakas are only accessible by water, making it a perfect yacht retreat. You can cruise further to the Vasilikos peninsula, hosting beautiful countryside, secluded coves and beaches.
The impressive nature and marine life makes Zakynthos the ultimate spot for snorkelling and diving activities and ideal for charter yachts with many hidden bays to explore. One of the most popular beaches of the island is the scenic “Navagio” beach, the Shipwreck cove. It belongs to the trademark of the island with the ice-white sand, impossibly turquoise waters secluded by towering limestone cliff edges. The beach acquired its name from the Shipwreck that is stranded ashore and adds up to the top photographed places worldwide.
Some of Zakynthos’ beaches such as the protected area of Laganas Bay, host the endangered Caretta-caretta sea turtles through their egg laying every spring and summer period. In case you are lucky enough to experience hatchlings taking their first tentative swim into the sea, you should by no means disturb them!
Conclusively, Zakynthos offers you an eclectic experience of combining beautiful nature and cosmopolitan indulgence, the island undoubtedly invites you to the perfect setting for a private luxury yacht charter adventure.

- 10 DAY FLOTILLA
Zakynthos (Greek: Ζάκυνθος), the third largest of the Ionian Islands, covers an area of 410 km2 (158 sqmi) and its coastline has roughly 123 km length (76 mi). The island is named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin.
Zakynthos with its thriving tourism industry, can offer amazing sailing moments, and in order to capture them you will need the best yachts that can take you there… ours.
Sailing Holidays in Zakynthos
Zakynthos (Italian: Zante), besides Kythira, the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands, lies off the west coast of the Peloponnese. The western half of the island is occupied by a karstic plateau rising to 758 m, and the eastern half is occupied by a fertile and intensively cultivated alluvial plain with a luxuriant growth of vegetation. With its beautiful scenery and excellent bathing beaches making it the perfect setting for sailing, Zakynthos is very popular among yacht charterers and tourists in general. The big harbor of Zakynthos has a marina on the side of the jetty, where you can find any supply you might need for yourselves or your yacht. Sailing around the island, you will find many beaches to inspect, including the world-famous Navagio beach (Shipwreck Bay), a good anchorage with sandy bottom. The equally renowned Blue Caves are only accessible by boat, and in order to visit them, you should anchor in Agios Nikolaos bay and go there with your tender, tying to a small quay. In this area there are chilly underwater springs, ideal to dive in and explore the seabed. As you sail, watch out for the rare loggerhead turtles, “ Caretta caretta” , heading mainly towards the southern beaches of Zakynthos, Laganas in particular, to lay their eggs.
History of Zakynthos
Since the time of Homer, the island has been known by the name it still bears, said to derived from the wild hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis L.). Achaeans and Arcadians settled there since then, and soon developed the island into a center of trade and seafaring, whose influence extended as far as the Iberian Peninsula, when they founded the colony of Zakantha, later known as Saguntum.
Zakynthos was occupied by the Turks in 1479, but recovered two years later by the Venetians, who held it until 1797. The island has preserved an Italian and Venetian stamp, yet its eventful history and the major earthquakes of 1515 and 1953 destroyed most old buildings. Adding to these earthquakes, in 2018 there was a cliff collapse in the beach of Navagio (Shipwreck beach).
Ports and Local Amenities
The port of Zakynthos provides good shelter from the prevailing north-west winds, though, with a strong southerly, it is better to anchor in the south-west.
You should be careful in order to avoid the little reef (marked by a red buoy) just east of the entrance of the harbour. You should also note that there are few unlit mooring buoys towards the south-east of the harbour. The proposed marina is still not finished.
The Vromi bay is a deep inlet and the only anchorage on the west side of the island. In north-west or west winds, it provides good shelter, but you should still be aware of katabatic gusts.
Above the town, there are the remains of a Venetian Castle, which is believed to have collapsed in the 1515 earthquake.
The most beautiful beach of Zakynthos, one of the five or six most photographed beaches of all Greece, is called Navagio (Shipwreck beach), and is accessible only by sea, giving you the idea of hugeness and perfection. However you should be careful while getting closer, or attempting to anchor there, since there was a cliff colapse in September of 2018.
You can use your own boat and sail towards the Blue Caves. They consist of particular geologic formations giving life to a succession of caves along the North-West coast of the island, starting soon after Agios Nikolaos to end near Skinari Cape.

The Venetian Tower is a remnant of the Venetian rule over the island in 1484, who also called Zakynthos the Flower of the East . During this time they tried to repopulate Zakynthos as many inhabitants had fled the island. Later, even Italians escaping the civil wars, that were occuring in Italy at the time, settled here.
Beautiful monasteries like Anafonitria monastery or Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa show the deep rooted Christian history on the island.
Explore mystical Zakynthos
According to Homer, the island of Zakynthos received its name from its founder with the same name. He was the son of the king of Troy and came to the island with his fleet, where he founded his very own Acropolis. As Greeks take their mythology very seriously, there are plenty of coins and other artifacts showing the founder of the island. It is even said that Zakynthos was the one who freed the island from snakes.
Sailing conditions in Zakynthos
Despite the obvious beauty that you can find in Zakynthos, it is the perfect sailing destination for anyone who wants to go out and explore. The winds and waves are generally not as strong as in other parts of the Greek islands. This also makes it a perfect destination for novice sailors. Some bays might be deeper than you expect, so bringing a longer anchor line is advisable. You can even explore different kinds of landscapes on the island. The west coast is karstic and therefore many caves and other kinds of fascinating rocky landscapes can be found here. On the contrary, the eastern part of the island is fertile and green.
The summers are very hot and dry with the months of July and August being the most popular months to visit the island. The winters will get colder and windier. Strong South-South-East winds are dominating here in winter and early spring.
Keep an eye out for the National Marine Park of Zakynthos , where wildlife is protected.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Zakynthos?
Zakynthos has many beautiful beaches to choose from, but not every boat type is a good choice to explore them with. You would charter a different type of boat for an activity like that than the one you would go for if you want to go island hopping around the Ionian islands.
Rent a catamaran in Zakynthos
Pros of renting a catamaran in Zakynthos
Charter a catamaran in Zakynthos if you’re ready for a super relaxing beach holiday. Sail from beach to beach without a care in the world. Catamarans are perfect for this type of holiday as they have a shallow draft and no keel. This makes them your ideal partner for sailing in shallow waters and super close to all the fabulous beaches you would like to explore on your sailing vacation in Zakynthos .
A catamaran rental in Zakynthos gives you all the flexibility you would hope for. Equipped with a sail as well as an engine catamarans are the real stars amongst the many different types of boats. You can set your sail and sail with the winds if they allow to do so or use the engine if they don’t. Either way, you will never get stuck in the middle of the sea, because you have no way of moving forward should the wind suddenly stop blowing.
Rent a catamaran in Zakynthos if you are more of a comfortable type. Catamarans are generally more spacious and more comfortable than other types of boats. Standing on two hulls gives them more room to expand the bedrooms as well as other cabins on board the boat. You will feel like sleeping in a hotel room rather than a boat. Additionally, the two hulls give catamarans more stability than other types of boats. Even if the wind picks up, a catamaran will stay strong and you won’t feel the wind rocking the boat as much. You might hear the water hitting underneath the boat where the two hulls are connected, but it is a minor annoyance considering the benefits you gain from sailing on a catamaran in Zakynthos .
Cons of renting a catamaran in Zakynthos
Of course it is great to have all this extra space available on board a catamaran, but it might also come with disadvantages in the long run as it might be harder to find a spot for mooring in the marinas - and if you do, you probably have to pay extra for all the extra space you’re hogging. If that’s the case, you might be better off finding a nice and quiet bay for anchoring for the night. Isn’t it more beautiful to wake up watching the sunrise in nature anyway?
Charter a catamaran in Zakynthos town
Rent a sailboat in Zakynthos
Pros of renting a sailboat in Zakynthos
Rent a sailboat in Zakynthos if you care about the environment and want to experience a sustainable boat holiday in Greece. As sailboats run on wind, you don’t need to worry about getting your tank filled up every time you leave the marina and you can rest assured that you won’t create any extra emissions. As the wind conditions on the Ionian islands are great for sailing, you will enjoy your holiday on a sailboat very much.
Charter a sailboat in Zakynthos if you want to save a bit of money. Sailboats are generally one of the cheapest boats you can charter on a boat holiday in Greece, but the fact that they are only running on wind and technically don’t need any fuel, makes them even more affordable.
Another advantage of a sailboat charter in Zakynthos is the fact that sailboats don’t need to stop by any marinas to refuel. This makes them perfect for sailing longer distances. You can certainly discover islands that are further away without worrying about fuel or simply stay away from the touristy spots while anchoring in secluded bays for the night instead.
For the romantics amongst us, renting a sailboat in Zakynthos means that no engine noises are going to ruin the peace and serenity you get to experience on a sailboat. Simply take in the views, feel the wind on your skin and forget your everyday worries for a week.
Cons of renting a sailboat in Zakynthos
One of the downsides of a sailboat rental in Zakynthos can be the fact that sailboats solely run on wind. Sure, there might be a smaller engine which is generally used for mooring when the wind conditions aren’t right or for emergency situations at sea, but they are not made for longer distances. This means that you might get stuck in the middle of the sea, should the wind suddenly stop blowing. If you only have a week to discover the Ionian islands by sailboat, it might cause some frustration.
Another disadvantage of a sailboat hire in Zakynthos might be the lack of space on deck. As all the necessary equipment needs to be stored somewhere on deck, it might become quite cluttered and less comfortable. Sailboats are definitely not the type of boats you rent if you just want to experience a relaxing boat vacation in Zakynthos, sunbathing by the beach and swimming in the turquoise water.

The very best places to charter in Greece
Published 19 September 2024
Quaint white washed villages, windswept islands, clear blue waters, protected harbours and pristine beaches — Greece is a yachting playground for good reason. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there.
The Cyclades Islands
From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.
With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.
Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.
The Saronic Islands
Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that it ’ s no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of Septses , where you ’ ll find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries. The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .
Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is totally devoid of cars and exudes an old world charm — not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.
About an hour from Athens, Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with neoclassical architecture, upscale cafes and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands, Sphairia and Kalaureia , which are connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon — dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.
A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over Poros town. Poros offers a winning blend of natural beauty, historical significance and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.
The Dodecanese Islands
Further away from mainland Greece are the Dodecanese Islands, which are actually closer to the coast of Turkey than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos, Patmos and Rhodes, to name a few. There ’ s also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along Turkey ’ s stunning coastline.
Rhodes, Lindos
With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.
There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.
Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.
Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene beaches and a bustling harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is winning of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the Tunnel of Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.
Nature lovers will want to hike up to the Potami waterfalls or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lemonakia beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will want to make to visit the Samos Wine Museum in Malagari to learn about — and sample — the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.
The Ionian Islands
Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands comprise seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way. The islands here are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.
Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.
Kefalonia, Assos
On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.
The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.
This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.
On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.
The Peloponnese Peninsula
The Peloponnese Peninsula, located in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural beauty and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are renown for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.
A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.
The Sporades Islands
Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos, Skopelos , Alonissos and Skyros. The island of Skopelos is somewhat famous as being one of the main filming locations for the film Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep. Skopelos is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of natural beauty was showcased in the movie .
The nearby island of Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including numerous underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts more than 60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters. The island of Skyros is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian ponies.
Don't forget Mainland Greece
While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.
Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.
Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect harbour and long stretches of beach.
