Tryst – A New 10-Foot Dinghy Trimaran Design
by Small Tri Guy | Jun 27, 2014 | Self-built Small Trimarans , Small Tri Info - All | 0 comments
Multihull designer Richard Woods sent me the following info a couple weeks ago about Tryst – a new 10-foot trimaran design. This new 10-foot dinghy tri is based on his original plans for a 10ft two sheet plywood dinghy called Duo . In other words, Tryst is a further development of Duo , and both versions of this small boat look pretty neat.
Richard tells all about it in the below, most of which has been copied from the Tryst information page at his website . With his permission, I’ve included a few of his photos at his website. There are also links to his webpage for the Duo dinghy.

New 10-Foot Dinghy Trimaran Design Named Tryst by Richard Woods
As you know, I don’t just design small trimarans, I have a large range of catamarans, power and sail as well. What you may not know is that I also have a few sailing/rowing dinghies.
the latest one is a 10ft two sheet plywood dinghy called Duo, which you can see by clicking here .
Recently, and in part due to demand, I have drawn a modified Duo, adding longer beams and small outriggers. I call the resulting trimaran the Tryst . The first set of plans has been sold to a builder in Australia, while I should be sailing my own Tryst soon – as you can see in the webpage linked to above, I am already sailing a Duo.
The 10ft Tryst trimaran is a variation of the Duo dinghy .
Originally I was going to call it “Trist”, but the Norwegian speakers amongst you will know that’s not a good idea. Tryst is an appropriate name I feel, as the etymology of “Tryst” is a variation of “to make safe, secure.”
When sailing my Strike 15 trimaran I have found that I can almost keep both outriggers out of the water all the time, providing I am not overpowered, which happens frequently on the Strike 15!
In comparison, with it’s much smaller rig, the Duo is under-canvassed most of the time, so there should have no problem sailing with both outriggers clear of the water. What I find nice about the Strike 15 is not so much the stability gained from the lee outrigger, but the fact that the boat cannot capsize to windward if I am hiking hard and the wind drops.
The same thing will apply to the Tryst and I expect that most of the time skilled sailors will sail it in monohull dinghy mode. Less experienced/agile sailors however, will welcome the extra security of the buoyancy “out there doing it”
Having said that, the Tryst outriggers are long, narrow and deep. That is because they are not “training wheels” but hulls in their own right. If they were too short and fat they would generate a lot of drag, even if they had the same buoyancy as the longer ones.
The crossbeams fit onto the Duo wings and short outriggers bolt to the beams. This adds stability for little extra weight, especially as all the panels for the outriggers can be made from one sheet of 3 or 4mm ply With a bigger, stayed, rig the Tryst will be competitive in the Italian 10ft class.

Tryst 36 foot trimaran
By dick newick, a caribbean treasure, the trimaran tryst to celebrate 50th birthday at 2019 caribbean multihull challenge by herb mccormick, dec 27, 2018.
"Her main hull and amas (outriggers) were built in Orlando, Maine of cold-molded mahogany at the Thurston Company boatyard. Designed by Dick Newick, the preeminent creator of trimarans at the time, the parts were then shipped to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, along with the identical hulls and amas for another set of boats, all of which were members of Newicks Trice class. There, in St. Croix in 1969, Tryst was assembled and began life as a day charter boat, taking tourists out for short sails and snorkeling trips."
Caribbean Multihull Challenge Day 1: Finn and Tryst the big winners by Herb McCormick, 15 February 2020
"And in CSA Multihull 2, the longtime Caribbean campaigner Tryst, a Newick Trice II design, also has a comfortable lead after recording two bullets in the roiled waters off St. Maarten. [...] Returning after a fine showing in last year's CMC, Bernard "Appie" Stoutenbeck's and Arthur Banting's Tryst put on a fine display of sailing, particularly with a sweet mark rounding in the second race despite a massive header on their final approach."

12' Tri Thanks, Ricardo-that's a neat little boat. The fact that it is a production boat is very cool.

Thank you Doug for posting the link to my Tryst trimaran. You know, but others may not, that it is a nesting trimaran. Two years ago we took it on a long road trip (8,000 miles) through 21 US states and on to Mexico's Baja with it all in the back of our pick up truck, which has a 6ft long bed. Of course we had all our personal stuff for 4 months with us as well. More here but you need to scroll down for photos of Tryst http://woodsdesigns.blogspot.ca/2014/11/7850-miles-round-usa.html?view=magazine In haste, off to sail on my 14ft Zeta trimaran now Richard Woods of Woods Designs www.sailingcatamarans.com

In TRIMARANER 17/ Fall 1973 I`ve found a little photo. The description: Kenneth Currie shows off what must be the world´s smallest trimaran. LOA is 8'. The Sailor seems to enjoy sailing his comfortable small boat.
Little Tri Thanks, Manfred! I like that he's sitting sideways. Thats what I would want and as much down in the boat as possible-except I need to be able to stretch out! I want to sail with the tiller in my aft hand and sheet in my forward hand while sitting comfortably in a seat with back support....
Thank you for your kind acceptance. Here is another small trimaran from France - not well known as his bigger sisters called MINIMARAN created 1994 from HYDRA CONCEPT and lauched 1995: http://www.minimaran.fr/page4.html . Better known are the following generations: http://smalltrimarans.com/blog/quick-look-at-the-mind-15-trimaran-in-france/ http://www.minimaran.fr/page2.html
