Vanderbilt's Legacy

A timeless Masterpiece: Classic Sailing Yacht VIM Vim  was launched  in 1939, designed by the renowned Olin J. Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens, and constructed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. Commissioned by Harold S. Vanderbilt, a key figure in competitive sailing,  Vim   was built  to dominate the 12 Metre class racing, especially the  America’s Cup and other prestigious regattas.

A Competitor in the 1958 America’s Cup During the 1939 racing season,  Vim  showcased her exceptional speed and agility, narrowly losing to  Jenetta  by only two seconds in a race over  the distance of  27nm, or 50km.  Vanderbilt’s  extraordinary skills and the  yacht’s  innovative design played significant roles in her dominance on the racecourse. In 1958,  Vim   further  cemented her place in yachting history by participating in the  America’s  Cup trials. Though she did not win,  her performance was highly respected  and added to the competitive spirit of the event. .

From America’s Cup to Mediterranean Regattas

After  her participation  in the 1958  America’s  Cup trials,  Vim  continued to be actively involved in various regattas and races. She sailed extensively in  both  the United States and Europe, participating in numerous prestigious events. Over the years,  Vim underwent several restorations to maintain her racing condition and preserve her historical integrity. She remained a competitive and admired vessel within the 12-metre class. In recent years, Vim  has been sailing in the Mediterranean, including participating in the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, showcasing her enduring legacy and performance.

Participants now have the opportunity to book their spots aboard  Vim  for classic regattas in the Mediterranean with Noblesse Yachts ® .

Golf und Regatta Day 4

Prime Picks: Seafront Elegance

Our curated studios and apartments near saint-tropez's harbour.

The limited number of hotels near Saint-Tropez’s harbour is due to several factors: strict historic preservation regulations, space constraints in the compact harbour area, high real estate values, environmental regulations protecting the coastline, and inadequate infrastructure to support large hotel developments.

Therefore, we opt for select studios and apartments, with some situated right near the harbour, offering several benefits.

  • Proximity to the Event : Being near the port means you are at the heart of the regatta activities. You can easily walk to the port; this proximity allows you to immerse yourself fully in the event without the hassle of transportation.
  • Flexibility and Freedom : An apartment offers more flexibility than a hotel. You can set your own schedule and have a more personalized space. This is especially beneficial for longer stays or for those with specific dietary or living preferences.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Renting an apartment can be more cost-effective, especially for groups or families. Instead of booking multiple hotel rooms, an apartment can accommodate more people, often at a lower total cost.
  • Authentic Experience: Staying in an apartment allows you to experience Saint-Tropez like a local. You can shop at local markets, enjoy neighbourhood restaurants, and engage with residents, offering a more authentic and enriching experience.
  • Quiet and Privacy: While the regatta is an exciting event, an apartment provides a private retreat away from the crowds, where you can relax and recharge in peace.
  • Scenic Views : Many apartments near the port offer scenic views of the sea and the regattas, providing a spectacular backdrop for your stay. This enhances the overall experience of the event.

We carefully chose based on customer reviews and our own experiences. If you need recommendations for various group sizes, feel free to ask. However, please be aware that availability and prices are subject to change.

Where Luxury Meets Laid-back vibes

Saint-tropez.

On the French Riviera, Saint-Tropez is a prominent coastal town known for its appealing features. Nestled between azure waters and hills, it maintains an air of sophistication and coastal charm. Cafes along the waterfront provide opportunities to enjoy a simple breakfast while taking in views of the Mediterranean. The open-air market at the Place des Lices offers a lively atmosphere with a mix of scents and sounds. Exploring the old town reveals narrow, cobbled streets with simple boutiques and cascading bougainvillea, while the beaches, synonymous with Saint-Tropez’s reputation, attract leisurely sun-seekers. Saint-Tropez’s appeal also extends to its artistic side, having once inspired artists like Picasso and Matisse . Art galleries tucked away showcase the talents of local and international artists, contributing to the town’s vibrant atmosphere. At night, the ambiance becomes sophisticated with beach clubs and waterfront restaurants. Evenings are characterized by conversations, clinking glasses, and the distant sound of waves. In Saint-Tropez, time appears to linger, allowing for the appreciation of each moment. The town seamlessly combines elements of a glamorous lifestyle with the simplicity of coastal living, resulting in a diverse tapestry of experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Beaches & Nature

The beaches of Saint-Tropez offer a sunny retreat, with sandy shores meeting the clear Mediterranean waters. Pampelonne Beach is a well-known stretch, but for those seeking a quieter spot, Plage de l’Escalet is tucked between cliffs, featuring turquoise waters and a serene atmosphere away from the town’s bustle.

Beyond the beaches, the Maures Massif , a lush mountain range, surrounds Saint-Tropez, providing a scenic backdrop. Hiking trails wind through pine forests, offering views of the coastline. Nature reserves, like Baie des Canoubiers , cater to birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, while the underwater world attracts snorkelers and divers.

Restaurants & Shopping

Saint-Tropez offers a diverse culinary scene, ranging from casual cafes to Michelin-starred venues. Le Club 55 , an iconic beachfront spot since the 1950s, provides a classic dining experience with fresh seafood by the shore. For Provençal cuisine, La Table du Marché highlights local ingredients in dishes reflecting the region’s essence.

In terms of shopping, Saint-Tropez is renowned for high-end fashion. Boutiques along Rue Gambetta and the Old Town showcase the latest trends. Place des Lices hosts a lively market, offering fresh produce and handmade crafts, providing a contrast to the upscale shopping experience.

Culture & Entertainment

Art enthusiasts can visit the Musée de l’Annonciade , housed in a chapel, displaying works by Pointillist and Nabis artists. The town also features contemporary art galleries, reflecting Saint-Tropez’s evolving artistic scene.

As night falls, Saint-Tropez transforms with a vibrant nightlife. Le Quai , along the harbour, is a hub for stylish bars and nightclubs. In the summer, the town hosts Les Nuits du Château de la Moutte , a festival of classical and jazz music set in a historic castle. Whether exploring art, enjoying nightlife, or immersing in the local market, Saint-Tropez offers a cultural tapestry as diverse as its history.

Les Voiles de St Tropez

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez Regatta

Classic and modern yachts gather for a unique regatta

A famous classic regatta that ends the Mediterranean sailing season, St Tropez’s late-summer regatta brings in 300 yachts, both ancient and modern, for maritime effervescence.

This regatta is a magnificent sight, with yachts up to 100 years old tacking and jibbing across the bay in the first winds of autumn. It’s an action-packed race as yachts bear down on each other with only metres to spare, sails snapping and billowing and crew racing about on deck. The regatta has had terrible accidents in its past but lives on as one of the sailing world’s favourite events. In the evenings, the yachts return to the colourful fishing port of Saint Tropez and the sailors and yacht owners paint the town red. One of the truly great events of the Riviera.

During the first week the event welcomes classic and modern boats (up to a size limit) and the second week there will be large modern sailboats and even some maxi yachts.

There can be up to 300 yachts competing in the first week and nearly 50 modern maxi yachts in the second week, making this an exhilarating event to watch or compete in. A host of racers and sailing enthusiasts come from all corners of the globe to do battle in the bay of Saint-Tropez. The Rolex Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Classic Division (over 16 metres).

Bay of Saint-Tropez

What to see

This event really showcases the most exceptional boats designed by the world's greatest naval architects, and is the largest gathering of maxi yachts in the world. It's a fantastic opportunity to get up close to these high quality, rare boats, as they battle it out on the water in the face of the strong Mistral that blows down the Gulf of Saint Tropez at this time of year.

The festivities on land are mostly free and include a 'salon' area with musical entertainment, exhibition stalls and all things sailing. Most of the events will take place in the streets of the old part of St Tropez, in the narrow cobbled lanes that lead from the Port to the foot of the Citadel. Some of the reception events are invite-only but if you check out the programme in advance you can see there will be several public events as well.

One thing's for sure St Tropez is not short of cafés and restaurants to enjoy whilst you're in town, and make sure you take the time to sit at a port-side table to enjoy an ice cold glass of local rosé wine whilst you ogle the yachts of the rich and famous.

Originating from a chance meeting in 1981, when an 'off the cuff' challenge of a 'regatta' between the skippers of two boats - Pride, a Swan 44, and Ikra, a 12 metre JI - was run in the Golf of St Tropez. Starting in front of the Portalet tower, the boats ran around the buoy on the shoal of the Nioulargue to finish in front of Club 55, a restaurant in Pampelonne, for lunch paid for by the loser. The owner of the restaurant named the event the Club 55 Cup. The following year the losing skipper insisted on a rerun to exact his revenge, and other boats wanted to get in on the action, and so began 'The Nioularge' - the new Saint Tropez regatta. The following year maxis were invited to join, and after some shmoozing and boozing it was registered on the official maxi class calendar.

From 1984 they introduced categories such as "sea explorers", "tropéziens-travail", and "tropéziens-marconi" to constitute classes, and at the entrance to the port there were parades, costumes, dancing girls (the famous 'girelles'), boules and water games. The Nioulargue gained international recognition, and gradually became an unmissable end-of-season event on the Mediterranean regatta circuit.

The 1995 regatta sadly ended in a collision during the race, when one boat sank and a team member died. The event was suspended until the completion of the trial, where the two owner-skippers were eventually held liable and fined for not having respected certain basic rules of navigation.

The regattas began again in 1999 under a new name: Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Gone were the parades, dancing girls and water games, as the times and regulations had moved on.

The 'Club 55 Cup' became a part of the regatta again from 2003, and is now a race where two sailboats compete on the historic course.

There is no need to buy tickets for the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, most of the action will take place on the water so all you need is a good spot to watch from and a pair of binoculars.

More inspiration...

If you can tear yourself away from the sailing at then there are plenty of other things to see and do in Saint-Tropez . Don't forget to check out our events calendar to see what else is on in Saint-Tropez during your visit.

st tropez classic yacht regatta

10 classic sailing yachts competing at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez marks the last event on the Mediterranean racing calendar and is heralded as one of the most prestigious regattas in the world. In its 24th year, the regatta will take place across two weeks from September 24 to October 8, with the first welcoming all classic yachts and modern boats up to 18 metres in length, before the Maxis take to the water in week two. As the competition gets underway, we a look at the line-up of classic schooners and wooden yawls getting ready to race...

Shenandoah of Sark

Length : 55m Builder : Townsend & Downey

Shenandoah of Sark has welcomed high-profile aristocrats, Hollywood heavyweights and even royalty on board since her launch in 1902, which makes her one of the oldest superyachts still sailing today. She was built as a triple-masted wooden schooner with a 13 metre bowsprit and she flies 2,646 square metres of sail. While she is a born racer, Shenandoah of Sark has enjoyed more leisurely cruising over the years, and has circumnavigated as far as Norway, Madagascar and the remote shores of South Georgia. A crew of 12 operates her day-to-day, but in race mode she can be manned by as many as 30 crew.

Length : 55m Builder : FNM

Elena is a replica of a 1910 sailing yacht by the same name and her design pays tribute to the golden age of sail. The original Elena was designed by Nat Herreshoff to win the 1928 Transatlantic Race where she sailed from New York to Santander in record time. She has been built with racing bones and her crew has collected plenty of silverware since her launch - Elena has won Antigua Classic Week, Les Voiles de St Tropez and Monaco Classic Week. Elena is currently for sale .

Length : 41.15m Builder : Fife

Cambria was commissioned by newspaper magnate Sir William Berry and delivered in 1928. After enjoying fifty years on the racing circuit she eventually fell off the radar. She was assumed to have been destroyed, like many sailing yachts of her time, in the Second World War but was rediscovered in Australia in the 1990's and restored to her former glory. After her rebuild, there was no doubt now that Cambria once again fulfils Fife’s basic requirement of a yacht – that she be both “fast and bonnie”.

Length :  39m Builder : GraafShip

Built in 2013, Naema is a beautiful example of a modern classic designed by Olivier F. van Meer and based upon by an Alfred Mylne schooner named Panda that sank in 1983 after a fire ravaged her to her waterline. Naema was built at Graafship in Turkey and underwent a significant refit in 2014 which saw her plumbing, engines and technical equipment removed and replaced. She is a regatta regular having competed at The Superyacht Cup, The Candy Store Cup and the Inaugural Capri Classica.

Length : 33.52m Builder : Feadship

Iduna is a rare example of a classic Feadship sailing yacht. She was delivered in 1939 and remained the largest yacht to leave the Dutch shipyard until 1960. She has been refitted several times throughout her life including one that saw her rig changed from a gaff ketch to a Bermudan ketch. Most notably, she underwent a full restoration in 1999 led by Dutchman Johan van den Bruele. He was determined to preserve as much of the original vessel as possible, including the main mast, skylights, deck saloon, compass, anchor winch and steering wheel. Any new parts that were required were built using traditional boatbuilding methods to stay true to her original build. Iduna is currently for sale .

Length :  38.4m Builder : Elco

Puritan is one of the most notable schooners ever built and her history is well-documented. Since her construction in 1930, she has served active duty in the US Navy during World War Two, sailed between Nova Scotia and Cape Horn and even acted as a research vessel for the American Museum of Natural History on which a new mollusc was discovered and named Puritanina harribaueri in tribute. Puritan is a gaff-rigged schooner designed by legendary American designer John Alden. She has had a number of owners throughout her life and has been refitted several times (and even saved from the scrap heap on one occasion). She went on to become a regatta regular on the Mediterranean circuit.

Length : 28.65m Builder : Fife

Sumurun was commissioned in 1914 by a baroness as a gift to her husband and is one of the oldest competing yachts in this year's Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. She was built using teak and oak by Scottish shipyard Fife and hailed as one of the swiftest and most beautiful yachts afloat. Sumurun ’s story is filled with vivid personalities, a multitude of racing victories including the overall win at Antigua Classics Week in 2013, and an elegance that has transcended the vagaries of over a century on the water.

Hallowe'en

Length :  24.69 Builder : Fife

Hallowe'en was launched in 1926 as a Bermudan cutter, which was uncommon in the days when gaff-rigged racers dominated the various regattas. Her owners continued to experiment with her rig and eventually, she was transformed to a yawl. Hallowe'en spent many years racing the Mediterranean and the Atlantic before falling off the radar. She was later discovered by Walter Wheeler and renamed Cotton Blosson IV before continuing her history of ocean racing and eventually being donated to the Classic Boat Museum in Rhode Island where she awaited a much-needed refit. After five years of work in Newport, funds dried up and Hallowe’en was facing the scrap heap when Elizabeth Meyer, the woman behind the restoration of  J Class Endeavour helped find a buyer to restore her to her former glory.

Aschanti IV

Length : 34.8m Builder : Burmester

Aschanti IV is a staysail schooner built in 1954 as Aschanti of Saba. She is a veteran of the world's classic yacht regattas and has won on many occasions including an overall win in the 2022 Antigua Classics Regatta. A thorough refit by Lürssen in 1994 saw the installation of up-to-date technology including hydraulic winches and two 36.5 metre spruce masts. What started as an upgrade swiftly became a full rebuild as every attempt was made to reconstruct the boat using traditional boat-building techniques. This included riveting her original steel plates back in place.

Length : 24.08m Builder : Fife

Mariella was built at the Fife shipyard in 1938 to a design by Alfred Mylne and delivered as a Bermudan yawl. Her mainmast stands 28 metres tall and she flies 279 square metres of sail. She has been owned for many years by Carlo Falcone, proprietor of the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, and has raced in many classic regattas on both sides of the Atlantic over the last 75 years. She is a regular competitor at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and this year, at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, she is joined by her fellow Fife builds Hallowe'en, Cambria and Sumurun.

st tropez classic yacht regatta

Les Voiles de St Tropez is founded on simple principles of fun on and off the water. This magnificent regatta, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, sees around 300 Maxi, Modern and Classic yachts and sailors from all over the globe come together to do battle in the bay of Saint-Tropez. First run over 35 years ago, as La Nioulargue, the regatta history stems back to autumn 1981 and an impromptu race between two small yachts. The two participants planned a route and rushed to the finish line, which was opposite Club 55. After the race, both teams celebrated in the restaurant. From that moment, the history of the regatta began! To this day the regatta perfectly pairs competitive racing with lively onshore festivities. Based in the Old Port of St Tropez this vibrant, and beautiful setting is the backdrop for the days of racing and the location for the activities which take place every evening around the harbour. 2023 saw a new, highly successful 10-day format, in which the Maxis were the first to hit the racetrack, followed by daily races for the Modern and Classic yachts off Le Portalet. Off the water a new race village also debuted on the Jean Reveille Jetty. 2024, with its 25th anniversary celebrations, is set to be even bigger and better!

Les Voiles de St. Tropez 2024

About event

Start : 83990 Saint-Tropez, France

Finish : 83990 Saint-Tropez, France

Les Voiles de St Tropez is the most extravagant Mediterranean regatta with evening events and parties!

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez is one of the most significant events in the world of yachting and certainly the most beautiful Mediterranean regatta. Both ultramodern yachts and rare wooden yachts participate in it. Yachtsmen from all over the world get together in the beautiful bay of Saint-Tropez to find out who is better. Yachtsmen of different levels of training, including beginners, take part in the regatta. On our platform, you can choose a team that will be perfect for you.

Sports competition at sea is well combined with an entertainment program on the shore. And it couldn’t be different in the world-famous luxury resort of Saint-Tropez.

The founder of the regatta is the director of Club 55 Beach Club — Patrice de Colmont. The history of the regatta began 30 years ago, in autumn 1981 with an impromptu race between two small yachts. How it all began? The two participants planned a route and rushed to the finish line, which was opposite Club 55. After the race, both teams celebrated and had fun in the club restaurant. During the dinner, a reporter from a local magazine came up to them and later he wrote an article about the regatta in Saint-Tropez. From that moment, the history of this regatta with a unique adventure spirit, which it has preserved so far, began!

Offers and pricing

This is my first time, is this ok.

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

The regatta starts in the Old Port of Saint-Tropez. The Old Port is a traditional very beautiful place for such regattas. After daily competitions in the bay of Saint-Tropez, there will be an exciting evening program. If you want to walk around Saint-Tropez, then there are many cafes, restaurants and boutiques on this beautiful resort.

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

Les Voiles De Saint-Tropez

Les Voiles De Saint-Tropez

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez is a legendary sailing event: it is the only regatta in the world that welcomes both Classic and Modern Sailing Yachts, including Maxi Sailing Yachts. Heirs of the Nioulargue, the Voiles de Saint-Tropez express an exceptional alchemy, an alliance of the pleasure of sailing and an innate sense of celebration. Patrice de Colmont, director of Club 55 and founder of the event, and André Beaufils, Past-president of SNST, testify. It is both a celebration of the Mediterranean sailing season and a festival of sailing. The regatta is organized by the Société Nautique de Saint Tropez (SNST). BMW, Rolex and Wally are partners of the event since many years. Wally provides a courtesy tender for partners, guests and media.

Nioulargue Nostalgia!

– Two Club 55 Cups no less! – Spartan wins the Centenarian Trophy – Galateia victorious in elapsed time, Cannonball in corrected time for the Maxis

No two days are ever the same at Les Voiles. Enjoying a thundering start to the week, with each of the three large groups of Maxi, Modern and Classic yachts validating races every day, the wonderful week of competition in Saint Tropez is catching its breath in the happy nostalgia of its past. Indeed, Challenge Day offers sailors the opportunity to relive what proved to be the catalyst for Les Voiles, the Club 55 Cup, with the challenge between the Swan  Pride  and the 12 m  Ikra . The 23 centenarians sailboats competing here this year also made the most of the occasion to have their own original regatta, in the wake of not one but two versions of the Club 55 Cup. Indeed, the 12 m  France  challenged the Bermudan yawl  Hermitage , swiftly followed by a dozen or so individual challenges with two or three boats of different construction and type. Meantime, the large Maxis continued their championship along the eastern fringes of the gulf, validating another fiercely contested race.

Club 55 Cup There were two Club 55 Cups on today’s menu. First up were the two legendary yachts which in 1981 took on a challenge that would go on to become the Nioulargue, the Swan  Pride , with Pierre Roinson, President of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez aboard, and the 12 m  Ikra , in a replay of a match that has coloured the history of Les Voiles. This mighty duel marked the symbolic return of the US boat, which had not been seen racing in Saint Tropez since the September 11 attacks of 2001. At the same time, within this same context, the 12 m France challenged the Bermudan yawl  Hermitage . Victory went to  Ikra  and  France , the 12mRs triumphing in a face-off punctuated by wonderful friendships and memories of times gone by.

The battle of the Centenarians 23 centenarian yachts accepted today’s invitation from the Gstaad Yacht Club to all race together, regardless of size, with a specially created measurement enabling the fleet to set sail with staggered starts. The Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and its Principal Race Officer Georges Korhel offered them a pretty windward-leeward across the gulf from Le Portalet and back via a mark outside the gulf. Spanning 9 miles in all, the fleet was a veritable feast for the eyes, the magic of seemingly eternal yachting utterly transporting. Ultimately it was  Jap , the 1897 Fife design which led the way, 6 minutes ahead of her first pursuer,  Dainty , with the light and hence rapid 15mR  The Lady Anne  (Fife 1912) bringing up the rear, 33 minutes after  Jap . The first boat back to Le Portalet would be declared the winner. The 3 nearly identical P Classes  Corinthian ,  Chips  and  Olympian , set sail neck and neck. Close hauled in 6 to 7 knots of breeze, the venerable centenarians quickly got up and running as they latched onto a building SSE’ly breeze flanking the gulf. Holding off the Herreshoff designed New York 50,  Spartan,  for a short while, the latter gained an edge after the Verhuge mark to snatch victory after just over 90 minutes of racing.  Olympian , the P Class (Gardner 1913), narrowly missed out on four wins in a row, but finished ahead of her virtual sisterships  Chips  and  Corinthian . Note the astounding performance by Monaco’s 15mR  Tuiga , which managed to squeeze herself in between the two P Classes.

Charlie Ryan, owner of  Spartan  (Herreshoff 1913): “The idea of getting the Centenarians racing together is fantastic. I adored it! It’s not often that you get to compete against the 15mRs. It was fabulous to see Barbara (Nicholson 1923) join the fray and sail with us for the first time too.”

Over to the Maxis!

Whilst the Modern and Classic yachts chose to either get some rest, sail for fun, or take on a challenge within the context of Challenge Day, the Maxis got back down to action off Pampelonne. On offer was a course stretching eastwards to Fréjus of around 23 miles and, just for a change, there was a passage off Les Issambres and a spectacular finish off Le Portalet. Keen to make the most of the lovely S’ly breeze of around 7-8 knots at midday, set to increase later, the Race Committee released the 4 groups, B, C, D and E towards the windward mark just off the beach. From there, the Wally Cento  Galateia  was the fastest to head offshore and on to Fréjus, sheets slightly eased with a mild chop. Winner in elapsed time,  Galateia  had to yield her crown in corrected time to the Botin 80  Deep Blue , which is now chasing down outright victory after closing on Peter Harrison’s  Cannonball  and Peter Dubens’ Maxi 72  North Star , respectively first and second after 4 validated races.

Of note was a slight misstep by the Wally  Lyra , third today after a blissful reign in the first three Maxi B races. The Wally  Rose  now has her sights on outright victory after scoring a bullet ahead of  Aragon .

Benoit de Froidmont’s  Wallyno  ticked off her fourth win of four, relegating  Lady First 3  to 4 points behind in the overall Maxi C ranking. Finally, in Maxi D,  Stella Maris  and  Saida  are continuing their pas de deux,  Saida  taking the win today to move up to within two points of the Starkel 64 in the provisional ranking.

Today’s partner: Highfield – Suzuki Pascal Eric Montazel, Highfield France: “Highfield France has decided to partner Les Voiles this year. Our range of boats fulfils the needs of Mediterranean seaside leisure activities to perfection. Les Voiles is a fantastic platform for our brand in the Mediterranean. We’re very well represented in the Atlantic thanks notably to the Vendée Globe and the Route du Rhum. As such, we’re here in the Mediterranean showcasing our very special deep aluminium V hulls (26 degrees)! 15 boats from the Mediterranean sports range are available for use by the SNST.”

Suzuki Marine – Pierre Palé “Suzuki Marine has partnered Les Voiles since 2016. To ensure the event runs smoothly, we are providing the engines for the safety boats, press boats and Race Committee boats… The 15 Highfield RIBs are powered by Suzuki. We’re here in the Village showcasing our technology and our sterling efforts to preserve the marine world with the Clean Ocean project. Suzuki is doing a massive amount of work to develop increasingly economical and less polluting engines.”

Programme 2023  (all results and race information online on Les Voiles website) Friday 6 October : regattas for the whole fleet, Prize-giving for the Maxis Saturday 7 October : regattas for the Modern and Classic yachts, Sunday 8 October : Prize-giving for the Modern and Classic yachts
