Murdoch's superyacht 'Sarissa' arrives
Dutch carbon-fibre performance sloop with cockpit swimming pool.
Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch’s stunning new carbon-fibre superyacht Sarissa has arrived in Sydney in time for summer. Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Dutch yard Vitters, the cutting-edge yacht was two years in the making and is the largest carbon-fibre sloop built to date in the Netherlands.
Vitters Shipyard's website describes Sarissa as a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter and performance sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan, and foils.
Hydraulic sailing and deck systems are said to provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance this modern and technical yacht was designed for.
Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back stays and running stays to operate both her cruising and racing sail configurations. The yacht has a lifting keel.
The mainsheet has been placed on an arch spanning the cockpit to keep the deck clear, while the aft cockpit can be transformed into a swimming pool for the kids.
Sarissa's design was guided by close client input and involvement, says Vitters, adding that the yacht will be used to sail all over the world with the family in tow and will take part in the established superyacht regattas.
The layout and deck plan emphasise a clean and modern look, while the family friendly layout below decks boasts a full-beam after stateroom, three guests cabins and three crew cabins.
The stunning interior is by Rhoades Young Design Ltd using a combination of limed oak, dark Italian walnut, Indian rosewood, carbon, dark leather and brushed stainless steel.
Finished in swordfish blue Alexseal paint, with a Ribling 555 tender in the 'garage', the 163 tonne Sarissa has a 56m carbon mast and will be hard to miss moored at Wooloomooloo in Sydney’s CBD.
Meantime, father Rupert reportedly listed his 184ft yacht Rosehearty , built by Perini Navi in Italy in 2006, for sale in September this year for $29.7 million. This followed his divorce from wife Wendi Deng.

Sarissa represents the next chapter in the owners’ love of sailing and passion for family adventures and exploration. Their first 43m / 140ft Sarissa opened their eyes to what else was possible. In 2012 the owners started dreaming about today’s Sarissa (Royal Huisman, 2023), which has become 17 metre / 55 feet longer. The challenge was to envision a yacht that was a step up from one they already loved. The owners spent many years developing her, and it is not by accident that the shipyard and designers achieved spectacular results.

Malcolm McKeon is one of the world’s leading naval architects. Through many great conversations and design meetings, the owners bonded over their vision for Sarissa to be fast and fun to sail. Despite the fact they were designing a world cruising yacht of just below 500GT, they didn’t want to lose any of the special sailing spirit and response they enjoyed so much on their previous yachts.
Sarissa’s owners wanted the boat to be able to compete with the very best on the racecourse and at the same time, have the lowest noise and vibration levels of any large sailing yacht. She also had to be comfortable in big seas, safely handling ocean passages. The steering had to be manual – the owners wanted to feel the power through their fingertips. Although Sarissa had to blend performance and luxury, the owners had a clear vision of where to draw the line between the two.
From conception, they sought environmentally friendly solutions that also enhance the yacht’s performance, improve the onboard experience and minimise impact on the natural world. With that in mind and to reduce demand on fossil fuels, the owners and their team sought the most efficient means of generating, storing and using energy.
While sailing as well as at anchor, they regularly delight in explaining to guests their yacht is running purely on battery stored energy without exhaust fumes. Improved water connection was also very important to them. This was achieved with the large-scale opening transom, its carbon-fibre door creating a truly impressive platform.
They were fortunate to find Guillaume Rolland of Liaigre, a brilliant interior designer who shares their love of sailing. The brief was for a light, airy interior with big windows and portlights with a relaxed feel. Sarissa was to be comfortable and inviting.
The design had to be intelligent, forward thinking, and balance beautiful design with functional operation and maximum space for guests, but with smart and efficient storage solutions both for guests and for the crew’s operation.
Quality was very important – the new Sarissa had to be beautifully built by the world’s very best yacht builder and artisans: Royal Huisman. Sarissa is the owners’ ultimate world performance cruising sloop, perfectly combining all the sailing attributes they feel passionate about and enjoy so much when they are on the water.
Seven prestigious awards Sarissa was selected as “Sailing Yacht of the Year” and “Best Sailing Yacht of 40m and above” at the World Superyacht Awards 2024. Earlier she was also rewarded with five major awards at Boat International’s Design & Innovation Awards. link to more including video.

The multi-award winning 59.7m/195'10" motor/sailer yacht 'Sarissa' was built by Royal Huisman in the Netherlands at their Vollenhove shipyard. Her interior is styled by French designer design house Studio Liaigre and she was delivered to her owner in May 2023. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Malcolm Mckeon Yacht Design.

Vitters Shipyard is a well established and respected custom yacht builder situated in Zwartsluis, The Netherlands. The facility opened in 1990 and has delivered an impressive list of yachts, working with top designers, up to 75 meter in length.
Sarissa measures 42.60 feet in length, with a max draft of 6.20 feet and a beam of 8.60 feet.

In the early years, luxury yacht builder Huisman produced smaller wooden motor and sailing yachts. The shipyard began building in steel in 1954, and also pioneered aluminium yacht construction. In 1959, Jan Huisman’s son Wolter Huisman took over as the head of luxury yacht builder Huisman, steering the shipyard into successful racing sailing yacht production and eventually entering the custom superyacht market. In 1975, Huisman launched sailing yacht mast and rigging division, Rondal. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave luxury yacht builder Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed Royal Huisman. In 2004, Wolter Huisman retired and his daughter, Alice, became managing director of superyacht builder Royal Huisman. Notable Royal Huisman YachtsAmong the many celebrated superyachts launched by luxury yacht builder Royal Huisman are the reconstructed J-Class Sailing Yacht Endeavour , delivered in 1989 to former owner Elizabeth Meyer. The 47.42-metre Sailing Yacht Hyperion , delivered in 1996 to American entrepreneur Jim Clark, founder of Netscape, featured a record-setting 59-metre carbon-fibre mast and advanced computer system. In the early 2000s Clark returned to superyacht builder Royal Huisman to commission the 90-meter schooner Athena . The 58.04-metre Sailing Yacht Ethereal , launched by Royal Huisman in 2009, set the standard for environmentally conscious superyacht construction.
