Tahiti boat rentals

Tahiti is one of the islands of the French Polynesia  archipelago, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean between  Australia and South America. Tahiti is also the largest island of  another one hundred and more islands included in the archipelago. The  most popular sailing itineraries may include the islands of Bora-Bora,  Raiatea, Tahaa, and Huahine. The region boasts absolutely stunning ocean  views, that is why French Polynesia is still considered to be simply a  sailing paradise and the most desired destinations to set sails in  throughout the year. The three above mentioned islands are known as the  famous Leeward Islands of Tahiti, offering some of the most exclusive  sailing facilities in the world one may only dream of.

Sailing in French Polynesia you will be astonished by the number of  islands with different origin. Some of them are formed by volcanic  eruptions and have extremely diverse nature – rivers, lakes, waterfalls,  lagoons, canyons, lush tropical vegetation that cover valleys and  forests, thickets of trees, coconuts and bananas. The others are formed  with corals and have sandy plains covered with palm trees, surrounded by  the smooth surface of the ocean.

Sailing in the Leeward islands of French Polynesia, you may wish to  enjoy snorkelling among those reefs and exploring the magical underwater  world with its inhabitants, or check out a couple of scuba diving  locations. Find out a great number of fish species, spend some  unforgettable time watching sharks, dolphins and turtles - the nature  itself is calling to show you all it has to offer! If you are not much  about it, then you have an extensive choice of water sport activities,  as well as gastronomy and archaeological tours across the islands, when  taking a yacht charter in Tahiti.

Culture and History of Tahiti

Being a cultural centre of French Polynesia, Tahiti has a rich  and interesting historical view with the traditions going back to the  ancient times, dated as 500 year BC. Sailing in Tahiti is somehow can be  compared with exploring the bright legends and myths about the island’s  life.

The main concept of Polynesian life is called Mana. Mana is something  that is not just a list of rules or traditions to follow, it is more  the way of life, the core of the local identity and existence. Every  single being or thing in the Universe is the part of Mana - the  self-concentrated system that is fundamental, harmonic and undisputed.  The main rule of Mana, better say its idea, is to be kind, wise and  generally ‘pure’ - then it is the right way, and Mana lives in you.

In X-V centuries BC these islands were inhabited by MAOI who left  here ancient heritage of their complex civilization. Sanctuaries,  cairns, traditional paintings, tattoos and dances all this reflects  unique culture, religion, and a clear hierarchy of MAOI society all this  you will be able to explore during your sailing vacations in Tahiti.

English captain Samuel Wallis and  French sailor Louis-Antoine de  Bougainville, Cook first discovered these lands in XVII. Original name  "Polynesia" was given by sailors who simply described with this word  "many islands" in the southern sea. These islands are also famous for a  well-known Captain William Blyth, who came here on "Bounty" frigate to  collect breadfruit tree sprouts - food for the slave Caribbean  plantations, but faced for the most incredible rebellion in the history  of seafaring. Polynesian monarch Pomare V gave these lands to France and  starting from 1984 French Polynesia became one of the French overseas  territories, but still has it’s autonomy – President, the Council of  Ministers and the legislative assembly. France is only responsible for  legal, financial and military issues. All guests in airport are greet  with flower necklace made from gardenia, symbol of Tahiti and see off  with a necklace made of shells.

Fortunately connection with Europe did not influence a lot local way  of life. Renting a boat in French Polynesia you will be amazed by the  life that still goes on in its leisurely pace. Here you will drink   coconut water from the cup made of coconut shell and eat from a plate  made of palm fronds.

Sailing in Tahiti

Water and air temperature +20 28C, hospitable people, nice  service, lapping waves, warm sand and the fresh ocean breeze will  delight sailors throughout the year. Picnic on a deserted island with  national dish - Tahitian salad of raw fish under the coconut milk. Songs  with ukulele and dancing in a sunset, swimming with dolphins you can  feed; diving with sharks and rays, visiting black pearl farm, huge  turtles, fishing from shore using a spear – truly unforgettable sailing  vacation in French Polynesia!

18 Polynesian islands spread over 5 archipelagoes where Society  Archipelago is the most popular among sailors. Tahiti, Moorea, Bora  Bora, Huahine are the islands formed on the top of extinct volcanoes,  with high mountains, lush vegetation and lagoons in the shape of crown.

Tahiti is the main island of the archipelago with urban  infrastructure and is developed more than others. Papeete is the capital  with international airport, skyscrapers and luxurious villas in  tropical gardens located under the palm trees. It is a mountainous  island while city and port are guarded by reef. Two islands the Great  and Small Tahiti are connected by a small isthmus.

Moorea Island has a shape in form of heart surrounded by the bronze  surface of the ocean with chain of coral reefs. Here you will find white  sandy beaches, coral, crystal-clear lagoon, a variety of entertainment,  fruit plantations in the mountains. All these beauties attract artists,  jewelers, writers from different countries. In Polynesian Tiki village  you can dive into the real world of locals.

Bora Bora Island  is a lagoon, surrounded by a mountain range with  three peaks. Otemanu is necklace of black pearls - an archipelago of  small coral islands Motu with scenic beauty, ancient temples and  mountains.

Cuisine of Tahiti

Tahitian culinary traditions and history is a discrete topic to  talk about, due to several reasons. One of them may be already the  fact, that this region is called French Polynesia, probably that is why  local cuisine has very much of its so-called French flavour. Besides,  traditions of Polynesian cooking required special methods, techniques  and approaches, for example, using open fire and wood or coal as a fuel,  ideally avoiding cooking with modern cookers and kitchen facilities  like ovens or grillers. Generally, Tahitian menu may include an  extensive list of vegetable-based foods provided in a variety of healthy  and sophisticated fish and meat courses. Be prepared to taste tropical  fruits in the majority of Tahitian dishes and meals. Vegetable and fruit  leaves are often used for wrapping and serving food in Tahiti.  Absolutely, the food of Tahiti is mouth-watering, and you should give it  a try. Below you may wish to find a shortlist of traditional dishes,  commonly served in Tahiti:

Poisson Cru. In French, ‘poisson cru’ means ‘raw fish’. So, as you  may guess, it is the main ingredient of this Tahitian specialty. Poisson  Cru (though called not like this among the locals) is generally  considered to be the national dish of French Polynesia. Basically, it  can be made not only of tuna, as it is supposed to be made, but using a  variety of any other fish. Though only fresh fish is used, it should be  freezed to prevent any risk of bacteria in it.

Ma’a Tahiti. Sailing in French Polynesia, do not miss the chance to  try this authentic local food specialty - ma’a dishes. This is a type of  food (actually, can include whatever: pig, fish, crab or chicken)  cooked with the help of traditional Polynesian oven, often placed right  in the sand among the hot stones, that form a stove.

Considering a yacht charter in Tahiti, please pay attention to the  fact, that the island attracts many travellers all the year round and  remains one of the desired sailing and holiday destinations. If you wish  the true Tahitian culture and celebrations, plan to come in May or  July: at this time you have great chances to try sophisticated local  cuisine and take part in traditional events, which tourists are always  very welcome to.

Weather And Climate In Tahiti

The Island of Tahiti enjoys commonly pleasant and warm climate  with a lot of sunshine. In winter, which is considered to be dry season,  the temperatures are slightly lower, showing the averages around 25°C -  29°C (78°F - 85°F), with more frequent winds. The best time to sail in  Tahiti amy be the period lasting from May to September, when the  easterly winds begin to blow, providing desired cruising conditions.  Mentioning the summer season, it is usually very hot and humid, starting  in November and lasting until the end of March.

Sailing Conditions And Places To Visit in Tahiti

The Leeward Islands of French Polynesia offer a unique yacht  charter destination, that you will most likely never forget. Sail around  the magnificent groups of islands and drop an anchor in the azure  waters of a lagoon. Enjoy inshore navigation and let yourself relax  nearby the beautiful reefs when hopping among the islands

Featuring on all these islands are the well-marked deep turquoise  lagoons that provide smooth inshore sailing, and safe, sheltered havens.  Gaps in the encircling reefs give easy access to blue water and your  next island. The passages are short, but still exciting. Sailing in  Tahiti, you may wish to navigate your itinerary to the islands of  Huahine, Tahaa and, of course, Bora-Bora.

One of the largest islands in breathtaking  French Polynesia  cruising grounds, Tahiti is as rich in culture, landscapes and welcoming locals as it is in pristine beaches and underwater life, making renting a yacht here simply bliss.

Comprising five spectacular archipelagos, French Polynesia covers more than two million square miles of the  South Pacific  Ocean and includes islands such as Bora Bora, Mo'orea, Huahine, Taha'a, Raiatea, Manihi, Tikehau, Rangiroa and Fakarava. Tahiti makes up one of the Society Islands and is not only considered the main island in French Polynesia but is also the most cosmopolitan, with rich cultural links to its French motherland. It is the perfectly hedonistic retreat in which to relax and enjoy the local cuisine, natural lagoons, coral reefs and the bustling city of Pampeete.

Popular Destinations for Yacht Rentals in Tahiti

A girl in a bikini looks out over the lush mountain peak of Tahiti with turquoise waters

Guests on a Tahiti yacht charter vacation are spoiled for choice, whether you’re keen on exploration, want to scuba dive among colorful marine fauna or prefer something a little more tranquil and laid back, this breathtaking tropical isle has you covered, complete with a French kiss.

One of the island’s most popular activities is swimming with the humpback whales that congregate in Tahiti’s warm calm waters to give birth every year and giving you a bold mark on that bucket list for a truly memorable experience. The island also plays host to a number of kaleidoscopic reefs brimming with marine life, perfect for snorkelers of all ages or scuba diving off the back of the boat.

To experience Tahiti in all its majesty, head inland, home to beautiful cascading waterfalls, striking mountain peaks and lush tropical jungle. Access can be tricky and some of the hikes may not be suitable for everyone in your yacht charter party, so 4 x 4 jeeps are a great alternative, enabling everyone to experience Tahiti’s verdant interior from the comfort of a vehicle.

For those looking for something more tranquil, the island boasts vast stretches of tropical beaches; pockets of paradise that have graced the pages of glossy travel magazines for decades. Some of the most Instagram-worthy beaches include Toaroto Beach – an elongated curve of white sands with protected waters for snorkeling and swimming, Venus Point beach – one of the best beaches for capturing the sunset in all its multicolored glory and Maui Beach – surrounded by lush rainforest, this picture-perfect enclave is the stuff of dreams.

Neighboring Regions for Tahiti Yacht Charters

Lush mountain peaks on Moorea Island

A perennial favorite for honeymooners, the slow-paced Bora Bora to the north of Tahiti offers up a paradisiacal tableau like nowhere else on earth. Encircled by beautiful tropical reefs, Bora Bora's pellucid waters are a haven for myriad colorful fish and other marine fauna. The island itself is steeped in verdurous emerald forest and soaring peaks, akin to Tahiti, with a raft of resorts capitalizing on the island's rich abundance of natural beauty and sun-drenched beaches.

A little closer to home, the neighboring island of Mo'orea offers another fine example of French Polynesia's unparalleled beauty. Only 20 kilometers away from Tahiti, this island gem is the perfect retreat for total relaxation and pure bliss on a luxury yacht charter. From its tropical gardens to its coral-built protestant temple, the island urges you to stop and smell the lotus flower. Mo'orea is also renowned for its world-class diving, where you'll experience inquisitive dolphins who enjoy approaching divers for a friendly nuzzle, schools of rays and other tropical species.

If you are a keen diver, the vast array of coral-ringed atolls of the Tuamotus are the perfect choice. Spanning an immense stretch of indigo-blue ocean, this archipelago yields an unusual bounty of blue lagoons, pristine reefs and World War II wrecks teeming with life.

Time for two: the most romantic destinations for a yacht charter

Highlights of an Tahiti Yacht Charter

A Tahiti luxury yacht charter vacation offers a mesmerizing selection of things to see and do. Here is our top picks of some of the most outstanding:

  • Pointe Venus  – the northern peninsula of Tahiti offers prime seats to some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. Anchor here for sundowners and witness the sky become a breathtaking riot of orange, pink and purple hues.
  • Papeete Town  – for something a little more cosmopolitan, head to the island’s capital and immerse yourself in its rich French cultural heritage, peppered with local markets, glorious cafes, boutiques and fine dining.
  • Faarumai Waterfall  – a trek into lush tropical jungle on the island’s north eastern flank will bring you out into a dappled clearing, home to a beautiful cascading waterfall culminating in a tranquil lagoon at its base.
  • Teahupoʻo – located on Tahiti’s southwest coast, this bay is renowned for its world-beating surf breaks, and the site of the annual Billabong Pro Tahiti surf competition, part of the World Championship Tour. With waves reaching heights of up to 7 meters, this is the perfect hangout for thrill-seekers.
  • 'Ārahurahu Marae  – set at the foot of a cliff surrounded by jungle, this sacred three-story marae structure of black stone was built as an ancient temple or meeting place for rituals, which has since been restored and is still in use today.
  • Mount Aorai  – volcanic peak covered in lush green forest with sublime views across the South pacific.
  • Tahiti Lagoon Paradise  – beautiful turquoise lagoon where you’ll encounter whales, turtles, tropical fish and World War underwater relics.

Who Goes on a Tahiti Yacht Charter?

Tahiti has long attracted the SuperyachtSet on their quest for a private paradise to explore. Thanks to its pristine beaches, luxury resorts and magical landscapes there is plenty the entire charter party will enjoy.

Tahiti and the surrounding Society Islands are also ideal for diving enthusiasts, with impossibly clear and calm waters, as well as a unique abundance of wildlife, you will be wowed by the array of spectacular underwater creatures you are likely to see here.

Standing out thanks to its idyllic charm, it is no surprise Tahiti is also a top destination when it comes to weddings and honeymoons. Likened to a paradise on earth, Tahiti provides the perfect backdrop to any romantic event.

History and Culture

Tahiti has a hugely rich historical background and its vibrant culture can be seen and felt as soon as you step foot on this wondrous island. The first people to witness Tahiti migrated from Southeast Asia roughly 4,000 years ago. Today, the islands of Tahiti have enthralling cultural stories to tell through marae tours, museums, craft markets and dance performances, among others.

The art of dance is hugely important to Tahitians. Traditional dances were developed to attract a lover, challenge an enemy, welcome friends or worship a god. Every dance has an important purpose and meaning.

As well as remarkable anchorages and beautiful swathes of beaches, Tahiti is also renowned for its artistry which includes weaving, woodcarving and tattooing. Each sacred tradition tells a colorful story about Tahitian life, love and their enduring relationship with nature.

Types of Yacht Charters in Tahiti

Unsure about what type of vessel is best for you and your charter party? Let's take a look at some options which may help you make up your mind.

Motor Yacht Charters in Tahiti

Motor yacht charters are the perfect way to explore everything Tahiti has to offer. Enjoy your vacation in private luxury and savor the thrill of being able to cruise towards tranquil secluded spots that are only accessible by boat. A crewed motor yacht offers the best of both worlds, providing you with opulent amenities, five-star service and unparalleled freedom.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Tahiti

woman spreads her arms in joy on a luxury sailing yacht in Tahiti

Whether you are a seasoned yachtsman or a first-time charterer, a luxury sailing yacht can offer an unforgettable vacation with family and friends. This option is ideal for those who enjoy an adrenalin-fuelled sailing adventure coupled with top-class luxury and pristine service.

Catamarans are also a prime choice in Tahiti, offering excellent stability, huge amounts of space and they are perfect for navigating the shallow waters and providing easy access to the beautiful lagoons that are found here.

Understandably, Tahiti is a desirable option for luxury yacht charters, however, it's important to highlight the limited availability for crewed yachts around this remote region. Ideally, you should speak to a yacht charter broker well in advance of your trip, who will be able to advise you of any charter yachts venturing to Tahiti and French polynesia in the up-coming months prior to your intended dates.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Tahiti?

Although there is generally not a wide selection of yachts readily available to charter in Tahiti, for convenience we have listed the estimated average costs for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters around this tropical region;

For motor yacht rentals in Tahiti, prices can go from $45,000 to $826,483 per week, plus expenses

To hire a luxury sailing yacht in Tahiti, prices range between $56,000 to $254,136 weekly, plus expenses

Taxes and service fees are set at 5% of the gross charter rate, to be collected before each charter.

When is the best time for Tahiti Yacht Charters?

yachts anchored in French Polynesian island, Tahiti

A destination that boasts a balmy year-round climate, Tahiti averages temperatures of around 28-31 degrees. Although the most popular times to embark on a private superyacht vacation are usually during the peak summer months, there are many different elements to take into consideration before you go.

Tahiti has two distinct seasons; a wet and a dry season. The months between May and September offer the most favorable conditions for yacht charters as they are generally drier and the winds tend to be more predictable – this period is also known as the Austral winter in the southern hemisphere.

The months ranging from November through April mark the wet season, with an average high temperature of 35 degrees and average low of 29 degrees.

Where should I begin my Yacht Charter in Tahiti?

woman looking out into the blue waters of Tahiti

Most yacht charters begin in Papeete , a port city on Tahiti where guests can embark on their superyacht at one of the island's main Pacific hubs,  Marina Taina or Papeete Port . This is a great starting point for those wanting to explore the island in greater detail.

One of the largest urban centers in the South Pacific, Papatee itself is a gracious and elegant tropical city with tall palm trees and an abundance of flowers hugging the city. Bustling with life, this is a truly remarkable place to start your venture around the French Polynesian hotspot and what's more, you will find that you are within walking distance of excellent dining and shopping facilities.

Popular Marinas and Anchorages in Tahiti

Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

Tahiti is French Polynesia's main yachting hub and boasts three well-equipped marinas:

Marina Taina  – located on Tahiti's north-western coast, this is an attractive full-service marina that offers limited stern to dockage to superyachts with controlling depths of 4-15 meters.

Marina de Papeete  – a highly recommended marina located in the heart of the city that can home yachts of less than 20 meters LOA

Port de Papeete – a beautiful port that boasts excellent security and is recommended for larger superyachts with multiple crew members.

Anchorage in Tahiti with crystalline blue waters

For nights not spent in a marina, there are a few idyllic anchorages to be found in secluded coves and sheltered bays around this spectacular island. Technically there are two main anchorages in Tahiti;

  • Airport Anchorage :  A scenic and calm anchorage boasting blue inviting waters and picture-perfect scenery that invites you into a sense of peaceful serenity
  • Marina Taina Anchorage : A beautiful anchorage that offers remarkable views of the island of Moorea in the far distance. Waters are crystalline and provide a pretty and quiet place to anchor down.

Local insight

woman looking out towards the sea and mountains whilst holding a bike in Tahiti

Avoid daytrippers around popular hotspots by arriving either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when they all head back to their resorts.

French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France, and French is the official language. However, Tahitian is widely spoken, particularly in the outer islands, as well as in other dialects. Not many people speak English outside of tourist establishments.

Tipping is not expected or standard practice in the country.  That said, you can certainly tip for good service and in those situations, 10% is the unspoken benchmark.

ATMs are easy to find on Tahiti but if you were to explore any other islands around this region it does become more difficult so we do advise you to plan your cash well.

From June to August, the south-easterly mara’amu winds blow across the islands. This varies in strength and duration depending on which island group you are visiting and occasionally it can be quite strong, lasting for a few days.

How to book your Yacht Charter in Tahiti

yacht charter broker advising best places to travel pointing her pen at infomation

If you are keen to explore Tahiti on a private yacht charter, we strongly advise booking with your yacht charter broker at least three to six months in advance. By doing so, you will increase the likelihood of securing your preferred dates and you will have a greater selection of yachts on offer to choose from. This also ensures your broker has enough time to craft a personalized itinerary and secure a berth at a popular marina.

If left too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced. It is also useful to book early in order to secure a date when everyone in your charter party is available as the longer you leave it, the more challenging this will be.

Sail Tahiti's Society Islands

  • Location Guide

Where Tales of the South Pacific Come True

The very word 'Tahiti' invokes visions of an island paradise. Explore the western Society Islands by charter yacht - monohull or catamaran, sailboat or motor boat. For over 30 years Sail Connections has been organising yacht charters around Raiatea, Taha'a, Bora Bora and Huahine. Specifically grouped as the Leeward Society Islands, this amazing part of French Polynesia is consistently one of our most popular bareboat sailing destinations.

The magical Society Islands, a sailing region that's better in real life than it is in the brochures. Majestic volcanic landscapes covered in lush tropical vegetation, each island rising steeply from its lagoon. The encircling and protective outer coral reefs are in turn dotted by small uninhabited motu (islets), fringed by white sandy beaches behind which lush green coconut palms grow. Truly an island paradise!

The Leeward Society Islands are a short flight or overnight passage from the main island of Tahiti, which is part of the Windward group. Adjacent to Tahiti is Moorea, the quintessential South Pacific landscape of stage and screen. On an extended charter it is possible to take in these islands as well as the more popular Leeward group. That is, if willing and able to do that overnight downwind passage*. Any Windward Society Islands visit must include a stopover at Cook's Bay (Paopao Bay), where Captain James Cook's crew enjoyed the local hospitaity in 1769.

All these beautiful places are in our Pacific backyard, and we know their waters best! Let us share our local sailing knowledge and first-hand personal experiences of French Polynesia sailboat charters in this perfect sailing holiday destination. We will secure the boat that's right for your vacation and assist with all aspects of your charter, including personalised itineraries and provisioning advice to ensure just the very best holiday in one of the best destinations on Earth.

The best time to take a French Polynesian sailing vacation is from May to October. The trade winds provide sensational sailing conditions at that time of year, while the weather is beautifully warm.

Talk to us about a customised Society Islands boat charter. The options will surprise you! Or for more on sail and motor boat charters in the wider French Polynesia, read about sailing holidays in the Tuamotu Islands  and  Marquesas Islands.

The scuba diving and snorkelling was amazing. Being able to pull up the boat wherever you want on these amazing sites was also fantastic. The boat sailed like a dream and we made great time on all our inter-island passages (it helped that the wind was on our side too!) Dean, Australia, January 2020

* It is possible to do a 'one-way' charter from Tahiti island via Moorea to the Leeward islands, finishing at Raiatea and flying back to Papeete.

Quintessentially the South Pacific: the Glorious Society Islands

The Society Islands are that part of French Polynesia that has become so familiar to Westerners by way of media and tourism promotion. Split into the Windward and Leeward groups, these south sea island jewels are today sophisticated tourist destinations where you can be as connected or as remote as you wish to be.

The Leeward Society Islands are by far the more popular sailing holiday destination, normally accessed on a 40-minute flight from Papeete. The capital city itself is on the iwland of Tahiti, part of the Windward group that also includes Moorea. While of less interest to sailing vacationers, these islands have features to explore and charms to enjoy in their own ways.

The Leeward Islands: Bora Bora, Raiatea and their accompanying coral island gems

Featuring on all the Leeward islands are well-marked deep turquoise lagoons that provide smooth inshore sailing, within which are safe, sheltered havens for staying over. Gaps in the encircling reefs give easy access to blue water and your next island.

After a pleasant day of sailing or relaxation in a picture-perfect lagoon, pick up a mooring and dine ashore at a local restaurant. Eat as the locals do, or make it five star if you wish. Or simply drop anchor in a secluded spot and BBQ aboard under a blanket of stars, savouring the peace, the serenity, the sweet ambience of the unique tropical paradise that is the Society islands.

The island of Raiatea is our Leeward Islands yacht charter hub. The township of Uturoa is the administrative centre of the group and provides your best opportunity to provision your charter yacht. We will assist you with advice on what to buy and where to get it.

According to legend, Raiatea is the sacred home of the gods, and the ancestral heart of French Polynesia. Visit the sacred sites and explore the river where the great canoes were built for their migratory voyages to Hawaii and Aotearoa/New Zealand. It remains a mystery to us why the inhabitants would chose to leave this magical island paradise. Admire the mountainous peaks of the island's south, where magnificent waterfalls cascade to the sea. Spend your first few days relaxing and acclimatising here, exploring the sheltered lagoon shared by the twin islands of Raiatea and Tahaa.

Raiatea lies within easy sight-sailing distance of the Leeward Group's other magical islands. From base it's 24 miles eastward and upwind to Huahine, and 22 miles northwest and downwind to Bora Bora.

Long walks along narrow coastal roads, big swims in crystal clear waters - some of the highlights.

Taha'a is the only island in the group that you can easily circumnavigate on your charter. The sweet tropical aromas of vanilla and frangipani permeate the air of this lush and tranquil isle. It's Taha'a 'au naturel', unfazed by the commercial world, and accessible only by boat. Ashore, wander along the coral road that winds around the waterfront and meet the friendly locals.

Take a safari tour into the hinterland to visit the vanilla plantations. It's a botanical extravaganza! Visit a pearl farm and learn all about the art of cultivation. Dinghy to the shallows of the reef and explore the sandy palm-clad islets that ring the turquoise lagoon.

We had a great time at Ficus on Taha'a where we saw a very entertaining show and ate authentic Polynesian food which we enjoyed.

Lure a deep-sea tuna on your windward passage to the legendary island of Huahine. Anchor your charter yacht off the village of Fare where you can top-up your supplies. Discover some of the unique qualities of a small island village, go horse riding, or take a land tour to learn about the sacred archaeological sites that mark a civilisation dating back over 1000 years. Anchor in the south of Huahine, take a beachfront stroll, and snorkel the underwater delights.

A favourite with our charter clients is the unique 'round the island tour' of Huahine Iti. You'll get to special places places you can't even go by boat!

Totally awesome place. My wife and I enjoyed the remoteness we found in Avea Bay on Huahine. We had the place to ourselves.

The fabled island where they make movies. spend some time in secluded anchorages and hop ashore to places accessible only by yacht. Sail to the eastern side, visit the Lagoonarium, then lose yourself in the blues, greens and turquoises of the beautiful lagoon itself. After you have plucked up the courage to swim with the turtles, sharks and rays here, you will announce this a highlight of your yacht charter holiday! Dine at the famous Bora Bora Yacht Club, spend a day ashore and take a bicycle, scooter or car around the island road.

On an extended charter of longer than seven days, sail westward to the less-visited yet equally stunning Maupiti, accessed though the Onoiau pass and best crossed in daylight. Maupiti is resplendant in pre-historic sites easily explored on foot or by bicycle.  From Maupiti it's a long sail the wind forward of abeam to Raiatea where most charters end, so a high level of sailing proficiency is required if you haven't hired a skipper.

Getting to the Leeward Society Islands

Internationally, Tahiti is served through Faa'ā International Airport in Papeete. Air Tahiti has scheduled flights to Raiatea and some multi-island services.  Flight schedules make both return and one-way charter itineraries easy to plan. Charters out of the main island of Tahiti are also possible, but require some blue-water sailing experience and are usually only undertaken with paid skipper on an overnight passage.

One way charters from Papeete to the Leeward island are possible. As stated above these are always recommended with hired skipper or full crew, sailing west then flyng back for Raiatea to conclude your vacation.

The Windward Islands of Tahiti and Moorea: Tall peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls and tropical forests

The main island of Tahiti and nearby Moorea are normally visited on an extended (10 day or longer) charter that sets out westward from Papeete. We always recommended  such charters are done with hired skipper due to the distance to be covered crossing to the Leeward Islands. But if sailing miles are not what you're looking for, rather a relaxing time aboard staying close to the main centre, there is plenty to offer around these striking islands.

It's just two hours from your Papeete base to Cook's Bay. Take a 4WD tour for an appreciation of the lanscape, or just chilll out and enjoy the change in climate after your international flight. Then it's around to Moorea's other famous bay Oponohu, where there is an emphasis on nature and the opportunity to further explore the island by scooter and even horseback. The Ancestor's Walk will connect you to early Polynesian settlement fo these islands.

The waters of Moorea are rich in sea life, so it's a great place to snorkel and enjoy the marine environment. Particularly at Haapiti lagoon, where you anchor on a large sandbank.

After looping around Moorea, sail back the short distance to the main island of Tahiti and see some of its south-western coastline. This is largely uninhabited with limited road access. It's where you'll find Teahupoto, a famous surfing spot with a safe anchorage. Another attraction where you can anchor is the Botanical Gardens, resplendent in examples of the islands' native flora in all its colourful varieties. You will return to Papeete via the sheltered west coast.

Opportunities to enjoy the main island by charter boat are limited, so you may like to spend a full 7 day charter at Moorea. It's just one of the many choices you have when planning you French Polynesian sailing holiday.

To summarise, take advantage of our in-depth sailing knowledge of the Society Islands. Ask us about the location of our favourite anchorages, our recommended itinerary options, and all the ways to get the very best out of your sailing holiday in.French Polynesia.

.carousel-cell { width: 50%; /* full width */ } .sc-carousel, section .sc-carousel { margin-top: 0; } Rating: 5 / 5 The Saba 50 was an excellent choice. Extremely comfortable and spacious, equipped with everything we needed. Our skipper Hugo and his lovely wife, added considerably to our enjoyment of the charter. The only discomfort for me was the foam cushions. Everything else was great. We loved the snorkeling, fishing. Swam with reef sharks, rays and fish everywhere. Highlight was the coral garden in Raiatea and of course Bora Bora with its magnificent waters. Your service and the advice given by Sue and Robert was excellent as that given by Tahiti Yacht Charters and our great crew. Sydney, Australia, Jun 27th, 2023
Rating: 5 / 5 The Lucia was great. we had a lot of fun and she did not let us down. There is one big complaint though and it is how hard the tender is to pull up on the Davits. I was able to do it but it was extremely heavy and if there was older or less fit people on board they would have had a terrible time. Bora Bora and Huahine were amazing. On second thoughts everywhere was amazing. Daniel, Australia, Jan 24th, 2023
Rating: 5 / 5 The boat was amazing. We did have an issue with the water maker which couldn't be fixed on the run, but DYC happily reimbursed us for water that we had to buy and in addition compensated us more than fairly for the inconvenience. The scuba diving and snorkelling was amazing. Being able to pull up the boat wherever you want on these amazing sites was also fantastic. The boat sailed like a dream and we made great time on all our inter-island passages (it helped that the wind was on our side too!) Your service was in line with the rest of the holiday. Trouble free, professional and a pleasure to deal with. Dean, Australia, Jan 21st, 2020
I just wanted to say a big thank you to you for your services since we booked our Tahiti charter. In particular Robert I really appreciated the time you took to talk with me on the phone to offer advice just before we left. Also your swift assistance with our torn UV sail strip was greatly appreciated. The charter went very well aside from the minor technical issues we encountered. The water was incredible and the weather was fantastic. Anon, New Zealand, Nov 7th, 2019
.carousel-cell { width: 50%; /* full width */ } .sc-carousel, section .sc-carousel { margin-top: 0; } Rating: 5 / 5 We sailed for two weeks in the Leeward Islands of French Polynesia in late May, 2019. The Dream Yacht Charter team was fantastic. Our boat, the 52' sloop ARZ, was a delight, very much up to the job of carrying our crew of 8 from island to island. Every minute of the trip was life-changingly dynamic, charged with beauty in land, sea, and people. We experienced the deepest peace combined with the greatest excitement, including a passage from Bora Bora in the midst of a suddenly appearing, un-forecast gale with 2-3 meter breaking wind waves slamming against directly opposing 2 meter swells. The boat performed beautifully in these challenging conditions. Really, we couldn't imagine a more wonderful trip and greatly appreciate Sail Connections as our agent, who smoothed our way and was instrumental in our choice of charterer and vessel, and Dream Yacht Charter, who made it happen. Had taken an earlier cruise in Tahiti and had experienced some problems with the charter service. Robert talked to me in detail about those issues and reassured me that Dream Yacht Charters was excellent, and that he and the Sail Connections team would back us up and do all they could to smooth over any difficulties. Without this, I doubt if we would have taken the cruise. Both teams, Sail Connections and Dream Yacht Charters, were meticulous in making serious promises and keeping them. Ten out of ten. Paul, New Zealand, Jul 19th, 2019
Rating: 4 / 5 The boat was well maintained with everything in good working order. Sail systems are easy to use, especially with the electric winch and the Catana sailed beautifully. Personally I do not like the steering stations at the stern of each hull as visibility to the opposite side is poor. But I knew that before we booked. The GPS is located inside the saloon which makes navigating more difficult compared to having a map alongside the steering. Overall a very comfortable sailing boat for 2 families. Vanilla tour of Tahaa was amazing with Noah. Bora Bora is beautiful, though of course very touristy. Managed to swin with many reef sharks, eagle rays and a manta. Taputapuatea is worth the effort to visit being the centre of Polynesian migrations. Your service was great. Quick responses to most questions and patience during the many changes. Craig, New Zealand, Jul 17th, 2019
Rating: 5 / 5 "The water in Bora Bora was amazing. We found the Bali 4.5 to be an excellent boat for cruising the lagoons around Bora Bora, Taha'a and Raiatea." Glenn, Australia, Nov 4th, 2018
Rating: 5 / 5 Practically new boat, so was in great shape. We liked the design, equipage, etc. Everything was as advertised and cannot think of anything serious to complain about. Quite comfortable. We would go back to the Leeward Islands of Tahiti in a speedy minute. Spectacular scenery, not at all crowded, felt private in all our anchorages. Nice, friendly people. Robert, USA, Jul 31st, 2018
First rate service in all respects. At the end of the charter we were practically ready to adopt our skipper and hostess. We truly enjoyed their company as well as high level of competence and knowledge. Checking in and out was a snap. We had such a great experience with Sail Connections, our boat and itinerary. Robert & Pat, USA, Jul 19th, 2018
"What a truly magical trip it was! The islands were stunning, the crew was amazing. We had an amazing trip and truly kicked back. We snorkelled so much in such amazing underwater coral gardens and reefs - outstanding! The local Champion in Raiatea is as good as any grocer here in Toronto. Good supplies in Bora as well, and pizza too! The base crew in Raiatea were great, most knowledgeable and helpful It was a most amazing time. Thank you for all of your help in making this all come together." Patti, Canada, Nov 30th, 2017
Totally awesome place and a trip of a lifetime! My wife and I enjoyed the remoteness we found in Avea Bay on Huahine. We had the place to ourselves. We enjoyed learning about the culture and had a great time at Ficus on Tahaa where we saw a very entertaining show and ate authentic Polynesian food which we enjoyed. We met some great people on our trip. The sailing provided a mix of adventure and relaxation. The natural offerings were spectacular and we enjoyed snorkeling where we saw many beautiful fish and several Manta Rays. Awesome. Robert, USA, Feb 28th, 2016

How to charter a boat in Tahiti

SAIL Tahiti offers catamaran charter in Tahiti. Our catamarans are privately owned by individuals who have decided to offer their boats for charter.   Simply inform us for your group size, your dates and give us some ideas of what you’d like to do during your catamaran charter and we’ll take care of the rest!

How does a yacht charter work in Tahiti?

Boat rental in Tahiti begins with defining your requirements. You need to know how long you want your charter to last, how many people you’d like to take part in the adventure, what the dates of your stay are, and so on. With this information, you’ll be able to choose the catamaran that best suits your needs. For each catamaran, you’ll find a description of the boat to learn more about its equipment. In particular, you can find out how many berths are available.

You’ll also find plenty of photos of the catamaran, so you can see what it looks like inside and out. If you have any further questions about a particular catamaran, please don’t hesitate to contact our teams. We’ll be delighted to tell you more about our boats, and how boat rental in Tahiti works with our services.

What’s more, if you’ve fallen in love with a boat and would like to proceed with a yacht charter in Tahiti, you can book your stay by getting in touch with our teams. We’ll accompany you step by step to ensure that the catamaran you’ve chosen meets your requirements, and we’ll make sure you get a tailor-made offer. We can then take care of the administrative side of the booking, so all you have to do is enjoy your cruise afterwards.

What types of boats are available for charter in Tahiti?

In Tahiti, there are many different boats to choose from, depending on your budget. You could even consider cruising on a luxury yacht, but these vessels can be difficult to access and represent quite a budget.

A catamaran is an excellent choice to enjoy an adventure without sacrificing comfort,. With its roomy interior and large cockpit, you can accommodate bigger groups as needed.. There are even catamarans equipped to take advantage of certain activities to make your adventure all the more fun, live diving, surfing, paddleboarding, and wing foiling.

How many cabins are there on our catamarans?

The number of cabins on a catamaran varies from model to model. What’s more, it’s important to distinguish between the number of cabins and the number of berths. A cabin can contain several berths. So, when it comes to chartering a boat in Tahiti, we recommend that you consider the number of guests that can be accommodated on each boat. This way, you can be sure that everyone will have a berth throughout the cruise. Then you can consider the number of cabins for logistical and privacy reasons, as well as the number of bathrooms on the boat.

Even if a catamaran has only small but cozy spaces for resting, it’s quite possible to enjoy a very comfortable stay. Take a look at the photos of our boats to see for yourself. Sleeping accommodations are comfortable and you can enjoy real privacy at night, despite the small size of the rooms, which is more than made up for by the outdoor relaxation areas.

How much does a yacht charter in Tahiti cost?

The price of a catamaran charter in Tahiti varies according to several factors, such as the type of boat chosen, the rental period and, of course, the duration. We offer preferential prices for early bookings and longer periods.

Boat size and model

The price of a yacht charter in Tahiti depends above all on the model chosen. Indeed, some boats are larger, more fully equipped or more luxurious than others, which inevitably means an additional cost for their reservation. We therefore advise you to choose a boat that suits your budget. Bear in mind that this is a holiday that you’ll be sharing with several people, so you may well want to consider splitting the cost of your Tahiti boat rental so that it’s less of a burden for you.

Charter period

The rental period also plays an important role in boat rental in Tahiti. In fact, there are certain periods that are more popular than others. This is particularly true of the so-called dry season, which runs from April to October. Hiring a boat during this period is generally more expensive than at other times of the year. That said, you’ll enjoy a mild, pleasant climate all year round, so you can make the most of your yacht charter in Tahiti.

Onboard activities

Some catamarans allow you to enjoy a wide range of water sports with dedicated equipment. Your yacht charter in Tahiti could be the perfect opportunity to try your hand at kiteboarding, foiling, surfing, diving, wakeboarding, paddleboarding or kayaking, for example. So don’t hesitate to opt for a boat rental in Tahiti that offers these services, and make the most of your stay to discover a multitude of activities in the most beautiful settings.

In fact, it’s entirely possible to benefit from the presence of a water sports coach on request. You’ll benefit from the expertise of a coach to help you learn how to use the different equipment and even progress during your stay. If you’re looking for a dynamic, sporty vacation, don’t hesitate to ask for a water sports coach and opt for a boat rental in Tahiti with a range of equipment.

Which are Polynesia’s most beautiful islands?

French Polynesia is a vast expanse of islands in the Pacific Ocean: 118 islands and atolls spread over a territory the size of Western Europe. The itinerary of your catamaran charter in Polynesia will therefore depend on the time you wish to devote to your cruise. Longer charters will take you to the Marquesas Islands, a wildly beautiful archipelago. You’ll discover the magnificent anchorages of Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa, Tahuata and the famous Baie des Vierges at Fatu Hiva.

The Society Archipelago, made up of the Windward Islands and Leeward Islands, is Polynesia’s most densely populated archipelago. It’s the easiest in terms of navigation, with relatively short distances. The landscapes are varied, combining high volcanic islands and enchanting lagoons.

Don’t miss the famous volcanic island of Tahiti, home to the capital Papeete. Nearby, the neighboring island of Moorea is a veritable playground for fans of water sports and marine animal watching. You can then continue your cruise to the Leeward Islands, where you’ll find the wildest Huahine, vanilla island Tahaa, sacred Raiatea and the dreamy lagoon of Bora Bora.

The Tuamotu Islands, Polynesia’s largest archipelago, is ideal for disconnecting from the world on its heavenly atolls and indulging in water sports. The atolls are veritable oases of underwater life in the middle of the vastness of the Pacific. The passes are among the world’s most famous diving spots. Here you’ll rub shoulders with tuna, bonito, king mackerel, trevally and various species of shark, from the harmless blacktip to the impressive and enigmatic great hammerhead.

When is the best time to sail in Polynesia?

The best time to charter a catamaran in Polynesia is during the dry season, from April to October, but you can sail in Polynesia all year round. Temperatures are warm, and the steady trade winds allow you to sail in peace in the magnificent lagoons of the Polynesian archipelagos.

The Marquesas, located closer to the equator, are an ideal archipelago for sailing from December to March, as the warm season here is less rainy than elsewhere in Polynesia.

Located in the middle of the Pacific, at 18 degrees south latitude, Polynesia’s Société archipelago, with its pleasant tropical climate, calm lagoons and magnificent seabed, is an ideal destination for a catamaran cruise. Sailing from island to island and through the lagoons is relatively easy.

Ask our team your questions!

Do you still have doubts about the destination you’d like to choose for your adventure, about the type of boat best suited to your stay, or simply about how to organize your week on board? The cockpit looks out to sea to welcome a starboard recreation area with a dining table, and seating at the rear beam.

Large aft transoms with a spacious swim platform, allowing simple access to the tender and safe, easy boarding. The ergonomic helm station is accessible from the cockpit or deck, ensuring continuous communication between the skipper and his crew. Inside, a particular attention given to volume layout, smooth flow of circulation and luminosity makes this new interior a truly pleasant living area.

Large hull window glazing with integrated portholes in the cabin provide exceptional natural light and an outstanding view.

LUICA 40 CATAMARAN

Comfortable and efficient, this catamaran is the first 40 feet to have 4 toilet/showers.

Actually, the Lucia 40 has been made to offer a 40 feet’s unprecedented living space. Outside, the foredeck has a sun lounger in addition to the trampolines, the rear deck offers an L bench seat and the cockpit a better protection against the sun with a rigid bimini.

MAHE 36 CATAMARAN

Outside, a completely rigid bimini, made of RTM, accommodates a spacious double helm station, with the main sail traveler now mounted on top.

Its spacious cockpit is well-protected from rain and sun. Free of obstacle, the cockpit and deck are also much safer and benefit from the addition of two new aft rails.

Inside, the living-room features exceptional room for a boat of this size. On the port side, the chart table, with its host of state-of-the-art electronics, is easily accessible and ergonomically designed.

The cabins offer queen-size aft cabin beds and large port-holes that provide beautiful natural light. The bathroom, at the front, is particularly spacious with 2 meters length, and modern decoration. The Mahe 36 is available in version 3 cabins and 1 toilet/shower or in version 2 cabins and 2 toilet/showers.

LAGOON 42 CATAMARAN

The powerful and dynamic nature of the Lagoon 42 is marked by its elegant silhouette, flowing curves which, by virtue of a noticeable acceleration of the lines in the bows and in the new coachroof design.

The space provided between the single-level saloon, the aft crossbeam and the various sunbathing areas is unprecedented on this size of boat. With aft platforms and steps suspended and widened, the transom skirts create a new space for leisure and relaxation. Very appreciable at bathing time.

The large glazed door that occupies the entire width of the coachroof provides access to the unparalleled internal volumes.

At the coachroof bulkhead, the ergonomic helming station is designed to facilitate maneuvering with reduced crew, improve traffic and open direct access to the deck and the cockpit.

Are you currently planning a Vacation or Honeymoon to Bora Bora and Tahiti? Or, do you just have questions about the destination? Either way, we can help.

When you commission your private voyage through Venture Tahiti and Tahiti Yacht Charter, your culinary preferences are not forgotten.  In addition to your English-speaking Skipper, you will be accompanied on your private charter by a hostess who will also prepare all of your meals.  Prior to your trip, your Venture Tahiti Concierge will contact you and ask you to share your preferences for food and drink.  Your hostess will accommodate any food allergies or special diets as well.

All of your meals (continental breakfast, lunch and dinner) are included during your cruise, with the exception of lunch on your first and last days.  Your included dining will commence with dinner on the day you embark and end with a continental breakfast on your final day.  Juice and hot drinks are included with your continental breakfast.  However, drinking water and other drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cruise) are not included in your package pricing.  You will have the opportunity to have the galley stocked with your favorite cocktails, liquor, beer, wine, water, and soft beverages as well.  A price list which is generally about 10% higher than local supermarket pricing will be presented to you when you are asked for your cuisine preferences.

Your private yacht experience through Venture Tahiti is a never ending “excursion”.  However, there are many opportunities for additional land and water-based activities along the way.  On your voyage, you will have the opportunity to swim in magnificent lagoons (with sharks and rays, should you choose to).  You can also take advantage of the included sea kayak or stand-up paddle boarding equipment, floating hammocks, snorkeling gear, and maybe even a sunset cruise (weather allowing).  These non-motorized experiences are included in the price of your charter.

For an additional charge, there will be local options depending on your choice of itinerary, including shopping on Huahine, touring a vanilla plantation on Taha’a, or visiting the Bora Bora’s Lagoonarium to see additional aquatic life.  If you choose an itinerary featuring Bora Bora, you may even desire to schedule a massage at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort’s famous Thalasso Spa.

All our boats have 4 double cabins and 2 or 4 bathrooms, depending on the model. They can take up to 10 guests. The “Classic” types are much appreciated by families and groups of friends and represent an excellent value-for-money. Our “Grande Croisière” models, equipped with generator, air conditioning and water maker, are ideal for sailing in the Tuamotu, where there are water shortages. The standard of comfort is that of a home. We organize private cruises, with or without crew, for couples or more. The only other persons on board will be your crew and they know how to make themselves unobtrusive whenever it is appropriate.

The Deck Plan shown is for the Lagoon 40.

Raiatea is the second largest island. Or simply unwind on deck, enjoying paradise with a Mai Tai in hand.   Our 148-guest Wind Spirit features wide teak decks and billowing white sails that are tailor-made for cruising Tahiti’s islands, while our newly transformed 312-guest Star Breeze features all ocean view spacious 277 square feet suites, all new bathrooms in all suites, two new restaurants, the new World Spa by Windstar, a new infinity pool, new engines and so much more. Both yachts are as at-home among Tahiti’s deserted motus and shallow lagoons as a tiare flower, and just as beautiful. Bliss knows no bounds. The sand massages your feet, warm water welcomes you like an old friend; ambition falls away as you watch the sun etch palm fronds on the beach. This is a place that is easy to love, difficult to leave, as so many before you have discovered. Come. Experience Bora Bora with our complimentary Destination Discovery Event, Moorea, Fakarava, and other exotic Tahiti destinations you only dream about.  -->
