JPMA & Hoylake Sailing School

JPMA & Hoylake Sailing School

(john percival marine associates), what are the requirements for a master less than 200gt coc.

The MCA have brought out the Master (code vessels <200gt), OOW (Yachts less than <500gt) CoC for those who hold a Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean, and would like to hold an MCA Master CoC.

There are 2 variants of the Master <200gt: ‘Limited to 150 miles from safe haven’ & ‘Unlimited area’.

If you hold the Yachtmaster Offshore CoC, you will get the limited Master <200gt CoC, if you hold the Yachtmaster Ocean CoC, you will get the unlimited Master <200gt CoC.

If your final aim is to achieve the Master <500gt or Master <3000gt CoC, you will need to have the OOW <3000gt CoC before you can move on to the Master CoCs.

In order to gain a Master <200gt CoC, you will need to do some classroom training, some sea service, and finally an oral exam.

Required Service:

You need to have 6 months of sea service on vessels of any size, whilst holding an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or IYT Master of Yachts Limited certificate.

Sea Service Verification Process – please click here to read about new regulations.

The courses you must undertake for Master <200gt are:

STCW Basic Safety Week certificates (PST or RYA Basic Sea Survival/PSSR/Elementary First Aid/Basic Fire Fighting) RYA or IYT Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased & Practical certs (either sail or power). These need to be  Commercially Endorsed NOTE: you don’t need to have a shorebased Yachtmaster certificate if your Yachtmaster CoC was issued before 31st July 2003 GMDSS ROC (if YM Offshore is used) or GMDSS GOC (if YM Ocean is used) certificate ENG1 Medical certificate Human Element Leadership & Management (Operational) certificate

Updating Training for CoC applications – anyone serving on board ship, who holds any of the following certificates must, as of 1st January 2017, have documentary evidence of either completing the training course or updating training within the last 5 years:

  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (CPSC & RB)
  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (PFRB)
  • Basic Fire Fighting
  • Advanced Fire Fighting

Applying for an NoE:

To do the final oral exam for Master <200gt, you will need a Notice of Eligibility. This document is issued once the MCA have assessed your eligibility, and an oral exam cannot be booked until the NoE is issued.

Your service needs to be proved with 2 forms of evidence for each vessel on which you are claiming service time. Usually a Testimonial and a Certificate of Discharge. If you have a discharge book, this can be used with a testimonial for each vessel, or if you are a member of the PYA they will attest your PYA logbook.

You must send a form of ID with your application. You can send a copy of your passport, signed by your Captain and with their CoC number noted, but you can also send any form of National ID – birth certificate or Discharge Book are usually easier to cope without!

Click here to view MSN 1858 (the testimonials and certificate of discharge can be found as annexes of the M Notice on pages 33-37)

Update to Electronic NoE application process & online oral exams

You will need to download the application form . You must complete the form and send all of your original certificates to the MCA. The NoE will be processed in about 28 days. Once the NoE is issued you are deemed eligible to take the oral exam.

JPMA offers oral preparation courses for the Master <200gt oral exam. Click here for details.

MASTER OF YACHTS 200 GT UNLIMITED (POWER / SAIL)

Courses and certifications are approved and issued by IYT Worldwide and recognized by MCA. Recognition by 25 governments has placed IYT MOY 200 GT accreditation at the top as the global standard of certification. The course also delivers a comprehensive understanding of the factors involved in routing and meteorology. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA -Must be at least 18 years of age -The IYT Worldwide MOY Unlimited Programme is restricted to current holders of a valid IYT Worldwide MOY Limited Certificate. Note that they are also accepted: -MCA OOW Certificate -MCA stamped Notice of Eligibility (NOE) -MCA Master (Code Vessel) <200GT -Marshall Islands Master (STCW II/3) <350GT  /  Chief Mate (STCW II/3 <500GT) -AMSA Master less than 35m Near Coastal (Master <35m NC) – previously referred to as Master 4 -A current medical fitness examination and a color blindness eyesight examination, which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht. To satisfy Port State Control requirements you will need to hold evidence onboard your vessel of completing or updating your training within the last 5 years. For further information relating to STCW course certificates, including their validity, please refer to [MSN 1865 amendment 1]https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/msn-1865-m-amendment-1-uk-requirements-for-emergency-occupational-safety-security-medical-care-and-survival-functions).

Proficiency Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) - (Restricted)

Proficiency Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) - (Restricted), previously Non-STCW Advanced Sea Survival, may be accepted in lieu of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats for Yacht CoCs. Your CoC will be endorsed with the following limitation: “Not for use on ships equipped with davit launched lifeboats”

Non-STCW Advanced Sea Survival and Proficiency Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (Other than fast rescue boats) - (Restricted) must be updated every 5 years in line with Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats. The MCA would recommend that all seafarers hold an STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Certificate of Proficiency. This is due to potential problems of Port State Control Officers outside of the UK, not accepting non-STCW Advanced Sea Survival.

Any person operating any radio equipment must be appropriately qualified. The GMDSS course forms part of the education and training required to obtain a UK CoC . To obtain a UK CoC you must hold a valid GMDSS certificate issued by the UK or an administration recognised by the MCA. The certificate must have an STCW endorsement. For further information about the GMDSS and how to obtain an STCW endorsement, please refer to MSN 1864 amendment 1 or search our website www.gov.uk for “GMDSS”.

How do I apply for enrollment?

Candidates may apply to any of the participating IYT Partner Schools worldwide who offer this course.

What happens if I am color blind, hearing impaired or have other medical issue?

The MCA are no longer allowing Deckhands, Officers of the Watch, Mates or Masters who have color blindness to hold MCA certification. In the past, those who were diagnosed with color blindness were issued certificates with the endorsement” no solo watch” or “dual watch only”.   Because the IYT/MCA Master of Yachts certificates are commercial in nature, IYT will be complying with the same MCA requirements and will be unable to issue any commercial certificates to those who have color blindness.    It is imperative that students undertake a color blindness test  BEFORE  they enroll in any IYT/MCA commercial course as we will not be able to certify them.   Also, it is important to note that a ‘lantern test’ for color blindness is no longer accepted.  The test must be an Ishihara or CAD test.    Those who already hold IYT/MCA commercial certificates with a color blindness endorsement “no solo watch” will be able to renew with the same endorsement”.

For candidates who are hearing impaired, hearing loss should not exceed 20 decibels for the frequencies of 500Hz, and 1000Hz and 2000Hz. When hearing level does not meet these standards, hearing aids may be accepted providing the above standards can be reached when using the aid and watch keeping duties at sea can be adequately performed.

Candidates with Type 1 Diabetes may receive the IYT Master of Yachts Coastal/Mate and Limited Certificates of Competency.  However, please know that the MCA may not allow you to progress to the OOW or 500 and > Master Certification.  As the IYT Master of Yachts Unlimited Certificate of Competency allows for ocean crossings, we cannot issue this certificate as medical assistance will be unavailable.

Please note that the MCA will not issue an STCW qualification to candidates who do not pass the “ENG1 Medical Fitness Examination”.  The MCA will not allow you to progress to the OOW or 500 and > Master Certification.

How much time do I have to submit all required paperwork after completing the course?

Master 200 GT: the gateway between the Yachtmaster and the Captain 200

boat map navigation captnboat

Yachtmaster holders can, by using the Master 200 GT oral exam gateway, claim a visa recognition from France giving them the same prerogatives as a Captain 200 (french degree).

The Yachtmaster is a British certificate, issued by the Royal Association Yachting (RYA).

The United Kingdom being a signatory to the STCW Convention, it can issue the title of Yachtmaster STCW Endorsed. In theory, if the Yachtmaster title is “STCW Endorsed”, the skipper will be able to obtain the benefit of the STCW titles recognition between signatory states of the STCW Convention, subject to obtaining a recognition visa or to the establishment of a bilateral recognition agreement between countries.

However, France (signatory of the STCW convention) does not recognize the “STCW Endorsed” Yachtmaster as such and therefore does not issue any visa recognition. Skippers who have it are, therefore, not allowed to sail on a boat waving the French flag. This can be a source of frustration for skippers who are denied employment opportunities.

To allow Yachtmaster holders to operate on French boats, they need to obtain a new certificate: the MCA Master 200 GT; which is recognized by France and can be subject to a visa recognition.

With a Yachtmaster, the Master 200 GT certificate is easily obtainable.

The Master 200 GT is the bridge between the Yachtmaster and the Captain 200 . Without a Master GT MCA, it is impossible to get a visa recognition from France.

1. What is the MCA Master 200 GT?

The Master 200 GT is an English STCW certificate recognized by France through the issuance of a visa recognition.

The MCA Master 200 GT is very similar to the Yachtmaster Offshore. Therefore, it can be used by skippers on vessels up to 200 GT or by watchkeeping officers on vessels up to 500 GT.

The Master 200 GT can be “Limited”, allowing use up to 150 Nm offshore, or “Unlimited” for use without distance limits.

Skippers must complete their diploma with a GMDSS certificate . This can be either a GMDSS ROC (Restricted Operator Certificate) which limits the activity in GMDSS Zone A1, or a GMDSS GOC (General Operator Certificate) which allows an unlimited use.

A number of prerequisites are required from the seaman who wishes to obtain this gateway, as follows.

2. Obtaining the complementary MCA Master 200 GT exam

A. prerequisites to obtain this gateway.

First of all, to be able to use this bridge between the Yachtmaster and the Master 200 GT, some prerequisites are necessary:

  • Be over 18 years old
  • To have completed 6 months of sea service with a RYA Yachtmaster, or IYT Master of Yacht limited
  • To hold an offshore RYA Yachtmaster or a commercially endorsed IYT Master of Yacht limited
  • Have a valid ENG1 medical certificate
  • Individual Survival Techniques (IST)
  • Basic firefighting training
  • Basic first aid (EM 1)
  • Life safety and social responsibilities
  • Operator certification: GMDSS ROC or GOC
  • Have the HELM (Human Element, Leadership & Management) operational certificate
  • Finally, pass the oral exam (see below for the content of the oral exam) of the MCA Master 200 GT. There is no MCA or RYA preparation course for the Master 200 oral exam. The program for the oral is: navigation, IRPCS, meteorology, cartography, business and MarPol law, Bridge procedures, etc.

In addition, candidates must complete a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) and send it to MCA. It is recommended that you allow at least 28 days before your file is processed. Oral examinations are held at the MCA offices.

3. Ask for a visa recognition to work in France

Once the Master 200 GT is obtained, the holder can apply for a visa recognition from the competent authority.

The visa recognition attests to the seaman’s competences to perform functions equivalent to his or her certificate in foreign countries.

A. How to apply for a visa recognition?

To obtain a visa recognition, you must put together a file with the following documents:

  • The CERFA for visa application , duly completed and signed,
  • A copy of your valid seaman’s certificates, approved by the administration of the country of issue (here the Master 200 GT), with the STCW reference of the title,
  • A medical check-up, issued within the last 2 years by a doctor authorized by the country of issue of the certificate or by a French seamen’s doctor,
  • An identity photo.

B. To whom should the application for a visa recognition be addressed?

The request for a visa recognition must be made by the seaman or the owner of the ship under the French flag on which the sailor, holder of the certificate concerned, is embarked.

This request should be sent to the “employment – maritime training” department of the DIRM (Direction InterRégionale de la Mer) of a DDTM (Direction Départementale des Territoires de la Mer) of the maritime coastline on which the vessel is operating (DIRM-Mediterranean, for example, if the vessel on which the sailor is embarked is operated in one of the departments of the Mediterranean coastline).

To know more about how you can obtain a recognition visa, see our dedicated blog post here.

C. Working in France with a visa recognition

Once the application has been validated and the visa recognition obtained, the French authorities certify that the foreign title held by the seaman corresponds to an equivalent level of function in French regulations.

By issuing this visa, France authorizes the holder to work under the French flag for a limited period of 5 years. If the recognized title expires earlier, the visa recognition will also expire.

The renewal of the visa recognition must be explicitly requested.

Note 1: Obtaining a visa recognition does not entitle the holder to the issuance of the equivalent French title and the related rights under French law. (e.g.: obligation to hold a French title for access to higher education).

Note 2: Obtaining a visa recognition is not sufficient for a foreign sailor to be able to command a French vessel. For this specific function, the foreign sailor must also be evaluated by a national jury. This national jury, presided over by the DIRM in its “commercial” formation, will examine the officer’s knowledge of the French language and national maritime regulations.

In summary, to work in France or under the French flag, the holder of a Yachtmaster STCW Endorsed must:

✅ Obtain the Master 200 GT by validating the Master 200 GT oral exam ✅ Once the Master 200 GT is obtained, apply for a visa recognition from the competent authority. ✅ When the visa recognition is issued to the seaman, he can then practice for 5 years in France.

  • IYT is a private training organization that operates through various local franchises.
  • the MCA is a government body, namely the “Maritime and Coastguard Agency” of the United Kingdom.
  • The MCA has delegated authority to IYT, and the RYA, to conduct examinations and issue certificates of competence. Both the IYT Master of Yachts and the RYA Yachtmaster (commercially endorsed) certificates are thus bona fide professional mariner qualifications issued on behalf of, although not by, the MCA.

IYT MOY 200 Limited Course

Read the Article on the Benefits of the Master of Yachts 200 Limited (MOY)

This course includes: Exam, Charts, Publications, Rule Book, Flip Cards, Navigational Tools, & more.

Qualifying experience for iyt master of yachts 200 tons limited – what you need, candidates must have logged mileage on power yachts:.

50 days on board at sea as an active crew member. For the purpose of this requirement a day is defined as a period of 24 consecutive hours. Parts of a day may be included in this total but a day is not invalidated by a candidate leaving the yacht for a few hours during a cruise. The term “at sea” is defined as being on a vessel outside of any harbor, natural or artificial, in which a cruising yacht could secure or anchor for a prolonged period of time.

3,000 nautical miles while cruising at sea. This mileage must be logged on genuine cruises or passages and not short day trips. At least 2 000 miles must have been completed on coastal voyages and not ocean crossings. It is important that the candidate has spent time in a position of responsibility, at least as watch leader, and has considerable experience of actual boat handling.

It is assumed that during this qualifying mileage the candidate will have gained a working knowledge of the Collision Regulation and the basics of paper chart work for coastal navigation.

30 hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew. For at least six hours of this night time experience the candidate must have been acting as the vessel’s captain/watch-leader. “Night” in this context is defined as the time between sunset and sunrise.

Verification of this experience should be original and signed by the skipper of the vessel. Candidates claiming sea time during which they were acting as skipper may sign their own entries but independent confirmation is required in the form of Statutory Declarations obtained from a Justice of the Peace.

Students with an Australian Master Class 5 can convert it to a Master of Yachts 200gt Limited, please contact us for more information.

The course is in two stand-alone parts which should ideally, but not necessarily, be taken consecutively.

  • 12 Students (max)

Seamanship Theory

  • An intensive seven-day course covering the following subjects:
  • Navigation including pilotage and passage planning
  • Tides including tidal calculations and tidal streams
  • Collision Regulations including buoyage
  • Meteorology
  • Maritime Law

Candidates are expected to have had at least some exposure to these topics during their qualifying passages and it is neither possible nor desirable to teach from scratch at this level. The instruction on each subject is followed by a written exam and a considerable amount of private study is required in addition to the formal instruction provided.

Practical Seamanship Training

Practical training is offered on a power vessel. A five-day course of instruction conducted onboard a yacht covering seamanship skills such as:

  • Nautical terminology
  • Tides & currents
  • Anchors & anchoring
  • Boat handling including docking
  • Yacht presentation, general boating skills, customs and etiquette
  • Coastal navigation and passage planning

The IYT Master Of Yachts 200 Tons Limited Certificate of Competency is Not for Beginners

While intensive instruction will be given, it must again be stressed that this course is not for beginners. Candidates should feel that they are ready for command and have the necessary qualities such as situational awareness, sense of responsibility, leadership ability and basic boat handling skills. The practical instruction can only be expected to formalize and give structure to candidates’ ability to command, not to teach from scratch. A person who has never maneuvered a powerboat in close-quarters cannot reasonably expect to pass.

The final day of the practical course is given over to a practical examination by an IYT Examiner who will assess candidates’ practical ability, their underpinning knowledge and their command ability by means of an extensive oral and practical test on a yacht. Candidates can expect to be examined on any subject covered by the syllabus of the theory or practical courses and to be questioned on any aspect of their yachting experience to date.

Completion of the IYT Master Of Yachts 200 Tons Limited course is by no means a guarantee of passing the practical examination and candidates who feel that they are not yet ready may defer the assessment to a later date.

I wonder if anybody can help? I'm looking to gain this qualification later this year. I have all the relevant qualifications and just need the MCA oral exam. Can somone tell me if there are any eligibility issues ie...do i need 'x' ammount of seatime etc? Why would you need to apply for eligibility? There must be something they look at if you need to apply? I just want to be equipped before i apply. Many thanks

Hi, What are the relavant qualifications you have to undertake the oral examination?
Hi K1W1, This is driving me nuts..... here's the thing... I currently have Yachtmaster offshore commercially endorsed for power and sail. I also have STCW basic training + GMDSS ROC as well as Eng1 and various other yachting certs (non relevant.) I'm currently running a 22.5m motor yacht but the owner may be looking at something larger in the future so i need to get my skates on and gain relevant qualifications. When i posted this thread i thought master of yachts (200) could take you over 24m but i now think this is incorrect. I've tried the MCA site which is a spiders web of misinformation and has you tearing your hair out trying to fathom where the relevant info is. Basically, what is my next step up the ladder so to speak. I need a qualification that will let me captain a yacht over 24m though less than 200gt for the owners private use. I'm now beginning to wonder if the yachtmaster isn't enough by itself if not for charter?? Either that or i need to complete my officer of the watch training and move on to master of yachts for over 24metre boats. I would so appreciate any help or ideas from anyone with some insight on the regs. Thanks in advance.

Your Yachtmaster will cover you on any sized vessel up to 200gt. The Master of Yachts (200gt) will cover you up to 24 metres and up to 200gt. The Master of Yachts (200gt) certificate does not "out-rank" the Yachtmasters certificate. The only advantage of having the Master of Yachts (200gt) is that it's STCW certified. You only will need this if the flag country of the yacht doesn't acknowledge the yachtmaster certificate as valid. More info can be found at: http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-g...ns-dqs-stc-master,_yachts_less_than_200gt.htm I hope some of this helps...

Denzil, I can relate to your predicament, I am sitting in exactly the same position, with the same qualifications as you. I am currently sitting without a job, and obviously would like to go for a Skipper's position, but if that is not forthcoming, Mate or Second Officer would also do. Now comes the problem...every agency or boat owner wants his Mate or Second Officer to hold an OOW Certificate. This is absolute rubbish, a holder of a Yachtmaster Offsore COC may Skipper any lenght of vessel, as long as it falls within the 200gt restriction, as well as the 150nm range limitation imposed on this certificate. If also allows you to be an OOW and a Mate on any lenght of vessel, irrespective of tonnage or distance from the coast. This fact is highlighted in a posting "STCW?" by K1W1. Your qualifications should be enough if the vessels you command falls within the tonnage, and remains within the range limitation(150nm). And trust me, a 200gt yacht in not small. Should the vessel be bigger, I would suggest you get some experience on it, and at the same time start working towards your 3000gt certificates. Another irritating issue is Owners looking for deckhands that hold Yachtmaster's Certificates...either they dont know how the licencing system works, or they are very clever in getting crew with exellent qualifications and experience, but paying them Deckhand salaries...they are sharks. A Yachtmaster Certificate is exactly what it says..and is a licence to take command of a vessel within the limitations of the certificate. Needless to say experience will play a huge role here.
Hi, DENZIL- From what I understand if the yachts is privately registered and privately used and as long as the Insurance Company accept you then the exact ticket needed is not set in stone.

For what it's worth, if I were captain of a larger yacht I would want my deckhands to hold a yachtmaster certificate. These would be my personnel that would be operating tenders, and it would give me greater peace of mind knowing they were qualified to do so. This may be a wrong perception on my part as I do not work on larger yachts, but this is how I see it from where I sit.

That's good to know... like I said I do not work on larger yachts, so it is interesting to learn more about them and how things work there.

"When i did all my courses in Cape Town i met several guys who did a delivery to the Caribbean and had enough seatime to do the offshore course. The problem is they still dont know how to drive a boat." That's what an experienced captain will pick up on in about 20 seconds. A ticket only gets you in the door, but experience gets you up the ladder. I'm running boats for 50 years, 20 professionally and am astounded by how little I know. Then I get together with some other "captains", listen to them spout off and realize they should be selling shoes. When hiring employers follow 2 schools. The first hires no experience (and thus no bad habits) so he can train them the way he likes things to be done. The second hires the most experience he can afford so there is not that much training to be done. Best not to spout off until you know which you're dealing with.

GrahamF, I fully agree with you and NYCAP123, but sadly certificates are issued to inexperienced people all over the world by all different organizations. There def is no substitute for experience..no amount of book knowledge can replace that. I had a 20yrs sea going stint in the SA Navy before I decided to venture into the yachting world. It irritated the living daylights out of me converting all my naval qualifications to the current stcw format, but it had to be done. I commented earlier to NYCAP123 that even with my experience, I am humble enough to admit that I still have plenty to learn, but also have plenty to offer lin the line of knowledge. I think the RYA is very thorough in their examinatios, and are very sticky about their minimum requirements and so the USCG I presume. But I also understand that these institutions have to cater for prospective buyers that would like to drive their own boats. At the end of the day, a commercially endorsed Skipper will have to prove that he has got the experience and is competent enough to be put in charge of a million$ yacht.

GrahamF said: Hi Starrider. The owners of these large yachts don’t get involved in the recruitment of crew. It is the Captain who decides what he wants on the vessel. Crew agencies play a big role in this as well as they try and filter the serious from the not so serious crew. Generally the captain tells the agencies the requirements. I now several big yachts that employ green deckhands all they have to have is STCW. There are still jobs out there for your qualifications. The best thing to do is to walk the docks and even if you get on n boat as a deckhand it is the first step to where you want to go. Today to get a yachtmaster offshore is easy. When i did all my courses in Cape Town i met several guys who did a delivery to the Caribbean and had enough seatime to do the offshore course. Aigua Charter & Sea School Hello together, i wonder if somebody have experience with the Aigua Charter & Sea School in Palma de Mallocra? I can´t find any references online. Because of different circumstances i have to find a School to do my Yachtmaster in Palma in November! And it seems, that this one is the only one who offers this course at that time. Thank you. Markus PS: Graham......i just meet our friend "The dirty Greek" !? I’ll be in Palma the whole winter. So catch up!
Hi Markus I have heard of them but i dont know anybody that has done courses with them. For a safer bet use Mallorca Sea School. http://www.mallorcaseaschool.com Will see you this winter. I take it the boat will be in STP
top tip when you pass your yachtmaster exam send off photo copys of your STCW A-V1/1-1 -1-4 (your basic training) and it will come back STCW endorsed with the words "the certificate holder complies with STCW 95 regulations v1/1 sections v1/1-4. this certificate is valid for use as master of yachts up to 200gt on commercially and privately registered yachts until (date of expiry) a lot of schools do not tell you about this. and Meets Prerequisite for MCA STCW CoC A-II/2

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

What we know about the Bayesian superyacht that sank

The Bayesian, which capsized in the early hours of Monday, was an award-winning yacht with the second-tallest mast in the world.

The Bayesian, an award-winning superyacht, sank during bad weather off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed divers had found the bodies of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and one of Mr Lynch's lawyers Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda.

Recaldo Thomas, the on-board chef, was the first to be confirmed dead earlier this week.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued along with 14 others - including Charlotte Golunski, a mother who told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old baby above the waves to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is missing, but believed to be the seventh body recovered from the wreckage on Friday.

But what do we know about the ship?

The British-flagged 56-metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.

The French design house Remi Tessier fitted out the Japanese-style interior decor, with touches of light and dark beige and dark wood furnishings, as well as a teak deck.

It won the best exterior styling at The World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards 2008.

It had six guest bedrooms - one master, three doubles, and two twins - holding 12 people, and could carry another 10 crew members.

Pictures show air conditioning units in several of the bedrooms, which could counter expert claims open windows may have caused water to rush in and tip the boat over faster.

Shipspotting.com says it was owned by a firm called Revtom Limited. Mike Lynch's wife, Ms Bacares, is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.

The yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune involved a statistical method known as Bayesian inference, based on an 18th-century theory, which helps forecasters predict outcomes more reliably.

Breaking news, canadian freight trains to roll again as government forces arbitration of labor dispute.

TORONTO — The Canadian government has forced Canada’s two major freight railroads to enter contract arbitration with its labor union, the labor minister confirmed Thursday.

Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the decision at a news conference moments after The Associated Press broke the news publicly, citing a government official familiar with the situation.

The railroads have said that once the dispute enters arbitration the trains will be able to get moving again.

A Canadian National locomotive sits idle at the CN Stuart Yard west of the West Harbour GO station in Hamilton, Ont., Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024.

Canadian National and CPKC railroads both locked out their employees after a 12:01 a.m. EDT deadline to resolve a dispute with Teamsters Canada Rail Conference passed.

Talks resumed later in the day — as workers picketed outside and business groups urged the government to force the arbitration.

The official who spoke to the AP did so on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the announcement.

All of Canada’s freight handled by rail — worth more than $1 billion Canadian (US$730 million) a day and adding up to more than 375 million tons of freight last year — stopped, as did rail shipments crossing the US border.

About 30,000 commuters in Canada were also affected because their trains use CPKC’s lines. CPKC and CN’s trains continue operating in the US and Mexico.

Many companies in both countries and across all industries rely on railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products, so without regular rail service they may have to cut back or even close.

Billions of dollars of goods move between Canada and the US via rail each month, according to the US Department of Transportation.

“They are now holding the Canadian economy hostage to try and pressure the Liberal government to impose final binding arbitration and take your rights away to free collective bargaining,” Paul Boucher, president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents about 10,000 engineers, conductors and dispatchers, said  on social media platform X  prior to the government’s announcement.

Locked-out rail workers marched back and forth across the road from CPKC’s head office in Calgary, Alberta, on Thursday. A few passing cars honked their horns in support. One man in a white truck yelled out his window, “Get back to work!”

Both railroads said they would end the lockout if the union agrees to binding arbitration.

Trudeau declined to immediately force the parties into binding arbitration for fear of offending unions and the leftist NDP party that his Liberal government relies on for support to remain in power.

In anticipation of the work stoppage, the White House convened a multi-agency Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to assess the potential impact on US consumers, businesses and workers, according to a Biden administration official.

Administration officials have been in touch with their Canadian counterparts and are encouraging all parties to remain at the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith, according to the official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Most businesses will probably have enough supplies on hand and room to store finished products to withstand a brief disruption.

But ports and other railroads will quickly become clogged with stranded shipments that Canadian National and CPKC won’t pick up.

Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau said many companies made supply chain changes after the COVID-19 pandemic that can help them withstand a short disruption. The real trouble starts if it drags on.

Most previous Canadian rail stoppages have only lasted a day or two and usually involved only one of the big railroads, but some have stretched as long as eight or nine days.

Pressure for government intervention will increase if the lockout continues, with the impact magnified because both railroads are stopped.

“They are so integrated and tied into the economy,” Windau said. “Just the breadth of products that they haul. … Ultimately, I think we need the rails to continue to be running. And so at some point the government will start to get involved more.”

Chemical businesses and food distributors will be among the first to be affected. The railroads stopped accepting new shipments of hazardous materials and perishable goods as they began gradually shutting down last week, but most chemical plants have said they will be OK for about a week.

The auto industry also may have seen problems quickly because it relies on just-in-time shipments, with significant cross-border deliveries of engines, parts and finished vehicles.

Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, posted on X that about four of every five cars made in Canada are exported to the US almost exclusively by rail.

He said a prolonged lockout could cause temporary work stoppages similar to the impact of the five-day 2022 Ambassador Bridge blockade.

Union Pacific, one of the US railroads that regularly hands off shipments to and from the Canadians, said the stoppage “means thousands of cars per day will not move across the border.”

“Everything from grain and fertilizer during the critical summer season, and lumber for building homes could be impacted,” Union Pacific said in a statement Thursday.

More than 30,000 commuters in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal were the first to feel the pain of the lockouts.

They had to scramble Thursday morning to find a new way to work because their commuter trains aren’t able to operate while CPKC is shut down.

CN had been negotiating with the Teamsters for nine months while CPKC had been trying to reach an agreement for a year, the union said.

The Canadian negotiations are stuck on issues related to the way rail workers are scheduled and concerns about rules designed to prevent fatigue and provide adequate rest to train crews.

Both railroads had proposed shifting away from the existing system, which pays workers based on the miles in a trip, to an hourly system that they said would make it easier to provide predictable time off.

The union said it doesn’t want to lose hard-fought fatigue protections.

The railroads said their contract offers have included raises consistent with recent deals in the industry.

Engineers already make about $150,000 a year on Canadian National while conductors earn $120,000, and CPKC says its wages are comparable.
