For some of the most pristine waterfront views in town, head to Tide House, a second floor dining social with ample outdoor seating. This neighborhood favorite is serving up some of the best local seafood, all purchased directly from Florida fishermen. A great spot for families and groups, the menu features plenty of shareable or family style plates, like Ahi Poke Nachos, Smothered Freedom Fries, flatbreads, and a great selection of large salads for the table. Entrees range from burgers and sandwiches to seafood, steak, and pasta. End your meal on a high note with some Chocolate Chunk Cake or locally made Key Lime Pie.

Stuart Beach

Known for being one of the best beaches in Martin County, this local favorite has plenty to do for the whole family. It is conveniently located across from Elliot Museum and the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center–both worth visiting if you need a break from the sun. At the beach you’ll find everything you need for a great family day, including covered picnic areas, beach volleyball courts, basketball courts, showers, and restrooms. When it’s time to eat, you’re only steps away from the Seaside Cafe for a delicious selection of cold cocktails, bar bites, and full meals during breakfast and lunch hours.

Sailfish Sands Golf Course

This 18-hole championship golf course has a few surprises up its sleeves, including a reversible 9-hole course–the first of its kind in South Florida expertly designed by the famous golf course architect, John Sandford. The full-length grass driving range boasts top of the line technology used in the pros, and lights to keep you playing even after the sun goes down. In 2021, the range was named in the Golf Range Association’s Top 50 Range Awards and received the Environmental Excellence award from the American Society of Golf Course Architects in the same year.

Stuart Boathouse

The Stuart Boathouse is a favorite local spot featuring a nostalgic blend of history, culture, and world-class hospitality. Located an expertly restored early 20th century building that once served as the St. Lucie Hotel in the mid 1920s, the structure was physically moved to its current location, which boasts views in every direction of the stunning St. Lucie River. The restaurant self-identifies as “upscale dining at a great price,” with a menu spanning both land and sea– from soup and salad to sushi, flatbreads, fresh seafood, chicken, and steak.

Elliot Museum

The Elliott Museum is a treasure trove of temporary and permanent exhibits themed around a variety of historical subjects, including vintage cars, baseball, Americana, artwork, and much more. The museum was established in 1961 by Harmon Elliot to pay tribute to his father, Sterling Elliot, who was a prolific inventor, businessman and social activist. The senior Elliot was famously hailed a genius by his contemporary, Thomas Edison. He held more than 125 patents in his lifetime and invented a groundbreaking steering mechanism that would be used in American prototypes of the first automobiles. The museum bearing his name serves as a tribute to his life and work, with the hope of inspiring young minds toward innovation, curiosity, and character.

Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center

This 57 acre marine life nature center was founded in 1964 as a non-profit with the mission to protect Florida’s delicate and crucial coastal ecosystems. Situated between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean on Hutchinson Island, Florida, the center serves as an educational hub of exhibits that answer common questions like, “How does a baby sea turtle make it from shore to sea?” and “Where does trash in the ocean end up?” Exhibit galleries feature Florida’s coastal ecosystem with aquariums, dioramas, interactives, digital displays, and games. Guided tours are available by request.

I'm writing this from aboard my sailboat currently docked at the Harborage Yacht Club and Marina in Stuart, Florida. I arrived here on December 1st and except for trips down to Palm Beach and the Bahamas will remain here until April 1st. The marina is absolutely first rate and the staff is great. Most of the bugs have been worked. The big change is the collapse of Florida real estate. The top of the line water view condos now go for $250K. You can probably get one for a lot less. They’ve also opened the Yacht Club’s restaurant to the public. There is a sign posted across the road that they’re having a closeout sale at 57% off the original price. The killer here is the condo fee. $625 a month for the $250K condo I looked at. The trains are unbelievable (And never mentioned or the railroad tracks shown in any sales brochures). This is the main line of the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad. They run 24 trains a day with a majority of them 10,000 and 9,000 feet long with three or four engines. Their schedule is on their web site. When they go by the ground rumbles and the wheels make loud squealing noises on the tracks. I’m out at the far dock near the fuel pier and I can hear them from here and I’ve got the condos between me and the railroad tracks. The condos are only 100 feet from the tracks. The trains start blowing their whistles about a mile away and continue right through the Harborage Condos. Since I don’t own one of the condos it’s pretty humorous. There is also a public restaurant with an outside bar and bandstand, Wahoo’s, right in the middle of the condos at the beginning of the main pier. I bet the old retired white folks here really love the loud rock and roll and rap music up until 2:00am. The bandstand is about fifty feet from Yacht Club’s restaurant balcony. . . . Marvelous! That said I’ll be back next year. Although the City of Stuart’s new marina with all floating docks opens this summer. It is literally right in Old Town Stuart. I’ll have to check that out.
