Galion 22 is a 22 ′ 0 ″ / 6.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Ian Haney and built by Deacons Boat Yard Ltd. starting in 1967.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Review of Galion 22

Basic specs.

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 4 berths, a galley and 15.0 liter fresh water capacity. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Galion 22 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

Galion 22 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.99 - 1.09 meter (3.25 - 3.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Vire diesel engine at 6 hp (4 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.1 knots

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 19.0 liters (5 US gallons, 4 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Galion 22 is 1.91, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Galion 22 is about 81 kg/cm, alternatively 455 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 81 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 455 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Ian Hannay was the inspiration for director and creator of the TV series Howards Way Michael Briant. He owned a Galoion 22 called Mignone. I own that boat she is called Jesus Cares now. You can see that boat on my old YouTube Channel David-Paul Newton-Scott or just type in a search Enntering Limehouse Basin yes misspelled with two nn's. Ian Hannay designed and built two boats in GRP under the Galion name at the end of the 19605 and beginning of the 19705 of which this is the smaller and the most successful. The other was the Galion 28. A sharp racer in her day (1968), particularly in the JOG classes, she also managed a reasonable cruising accommodation. The high, Van de Stadt styled coach roof creates 5ft 9inch (1.7) headroom under which are four berths two of which are claimed to be 7ft (2.1 m)long. A good number survive and make reliable and economical small family cruisers. Most are outboard powered but a few had Vire petrol inboards.

LOA 22ft (6.70m) LWL 18ft (5.5m) beam 7ft 3in (2.2m) draught 3ft 3in (1 m) displacement 3,400 Ib (1 ,545kg). Price guide : £3,000 to £5,000. YM Report December 1968.

Refit and Other Sailing Experiences

Decision was made to begin with an inboard engine installation.

So, the first step was to go on-line and find what options we have and how much information I can find on Galion 22. It was (because it doesn’t exist any more) very good website ‘Galion Owners Association’ where I found many useful details about our boat. Also, because there were few on sale I managed to collect fair amount of pictures. But still many things were a guess work, such as boom fittings.

On the engine front, I considered: Yanmar one and two cylinder; Beta Marine; Nanni, Farryman/Bukh; Westerbeke and Vetus. Important factors were: power, weight, size and lastly price. Also, I was looking at electric motors but cost and battery weight were prohibitive. The best candidates were Yanmar 1GM10, Beta Marine 10 and Nanni N2.10 and our winner was Yanmar, as the smallest, lightest and available second-hand. We found one on eBay for £1500 with gearbox. According to the seller it was fully reconditioned, however it turned out not to be after the purchase and very close examination and it became another task on its own. At the seller’s workshop it started fairly easy but was emitting enormous amount of black smoke, which was explained to us as the result of oil on cylinder after reconditioning and it will stop when the oil will fully burn out. Nothing more misleading. For the extra £50 we got new control panel.

After we brought it in to the Greenwich Yacht Club, where the boat is I inspected the engine fully and found that an oil was old in both the engine and a gearbox, breather was clogged, valves were off settings, an anode was ‘eaten’, water pump was leaking, impeller broke soon after, thermostat rusted and stuck, fuel filter dirty and some bolts, brackets and fittings were missing. Lesson learned: be vigilante and careful but unfortunately many things cannot be seen on the spot without lots of unscrewing. The only thing was an oil I forgotten to check. This would show how bad it was.

Anyway, I build a list of parts needed, well not so fast. I spent some time searching for the engine’s manual and parts catalogue. Quite a task on its own but successful, so the list was made and parts ordered. Of course battery and cables were ordered too as we had none. For the convenience I have created a page with links to all documents, manual and catalogue I found on-line.

After couple of hours the engine was ready for its first run and it started immediately with no smoke whatsoever. Happy time 🙂 Because for this first time I connected running water from the tap I didn’t notice a problem with an impeller but only a leaking pump. So, after replacing seals in the pump and letting engine suck water from a bucket the impeller issue came to my attention as its inside metal ring broke from the rubber and no water was coming out of the exhaust. Later I found that this type of issue happened even with new impellers and it was due to faulty manufacturing. However, since than the engine works fine.

The next step was the engine installation . But to be fully honest, I’m a bit chaotic and I move from one task to another and not necessarily in any particular order. So, while working more conceptually on the engine bedding I was looking at all necessary systems such as fuel, cooling or exhaust I buying elements and fitting them such as seacock . But regardless of anything, the goal was to have all systems in places before the engine being seated on the bedding. More details are on Engine Bedding pages.

There were many other things to do. The deck and cockpit had to be painted, new running rigging fitted, the bow roller was damaged and there was no anchor. The safety lines on the stanchions had to be replaced and I wanted netting fitted too. The mast and the boom had to be sorted, I mean nav lights, antenna, windex should go on the mast and boom needed change from roller-reefing to slab-reefing, fit lazy jacks, boom lift and main sheets bracket. The radio and chart plotter had to be fitted too as well as compass and some other navigational instruments. I also wanted to build a map table , very useful item on the boat. So, I did it before the 2014 season. We needed some safety items such horseshoe buoy, first aid kid, MOB throw line, secondary anchor, search light and other equipment such as fenders, hand bilge pump, mooring lines, bosun hook or ladder, not saying anything about tools, fittings and fixings as well as sailing and rigging related items. The list of needed items crossed 500 and tasks big and small passed well over 100.

I will do my best to tell you most about how and what we did but I would like to hear from you too, about your own experiences and things you have done on your boats. I will share your views in the form of guest posts. Any suggestions are very much welcome. This is to benefit of all Galion 22 current and future owners.

Got a mate who I took out for a day sailing this year who is now hypnotised. Unfortunately he has fiscal rectitude imposed on him, and needs to convince an unsure SWMBO that this is A GOOD IDEA. We have established that he needs a boat for the East Coast which has a nice airy interior, and look modernish. Performance is not a main want. We have spotted a Galion 22 which may fit. Any forumites out there who know the type, please post comments. We would also like to hear from those other alternative tzpes of boat to look at, or maybe you know of one somewhere on the East Coast for sale. PM me if you dont want to go public. Heres the rub. 3 Grand is the max price to pay (as opposed to what the advert says). Some work to do OK, but no derelict sheds please. Thank you. Please do not delete this post. Jim, Can't let this go without putting in a word for the Hurley 22, available as long fin or bilge keel. Excellent, safe, sea-kindly first boat. Loads built (about 1500) and still popular so easy to buy and (perhaps more important) to sell again. Loads of information on the type here and a well-used newsgroup here on Yahoo although you need to register. Or PM me for a chat. £3k to £4k depending on condition or higher for a newish one with loads of kit. Dave

For that kind of money and size, they should also look at; Anderson 22 Achilles 24 Leisure 22  

An old pal of mine has owned a Galion22 for many years and he loves it dearly. I have sailed with him and it is easy to handle, good speed for its size and points well. Iwas rather hoping he might sell it to me a year or two ago, circa £3500-4000 but sadly not. It will see him out and he has good few years to go yet I hope.  

Leisure 22/23 maybe which is unloved? Not the best sail boats but big and sturdy with lots of room. A lot about in a sad (not disasterous) condition. Simply get a jet washer and a pump and remove all the cushions...hey presto a nice clean boat. Had three Leisures but never the 22/23. I have seen them at this time of year at that price but you will have to look hard. Good Luck Paul

The very first boat I purchased (after building a mirror dinghy in the garage) was a Galion 22. Absolutely superb little boat. Sea worthy and well constructed and will maintain it's price... 3 weeks after I got it I sailed it to Cherbourg - had so much fun with it. It is still around some 35 years later and was no where near new when I had her. Mignon my son tells me, is on swinging moorings near Gosport and still looks excellent!

This boat is a very good example of these solid, pocket cruisers. When I visited the boat, I was struck by its seakeeping design and potential and the reassuring benefit of a relatively new, inboard diesel engine. The Galion 22 has a well known pedigree and this example has been well maintained, with sufficient instruments and ability for enjoyable coastal cruising, in an easy to handle boat.
