Dream Boats: The vintage appeal of Trumpy yachts

Some boats have stage presence. When they enter a harbor, every head turns. Trumpy motoryachts have that hard-to-define appeal. Like a Frank Lloyd Wright house or a Rolls Royce, they are a product of their time yet possess a timeless appeal.

Built from the 1920s to 1970s, Trumpy yachts are a study in elegance. Their sleek profile, crisp white hulls and polished wood detailing exude luxury and leisure.

Although more than 400 were built, each Trumpy was meticulously handcrafted to the owner’s specifications. While every Trumpy is unique, the boats have a signature look and always the essential Trumpy embellishment: carved wood scrollwork on the bow that, on close inspection, incorporates a capital T. In their heyday, the boats were de rigueur for members of the aristocracy, among them aviation pioneer Howard Hughes, the Chrysler family and the Duponts.

The name comes from Norwegian-born Naval architect John Trumpy Sr., who began building yachts in Camden Yard in Gloucester City, N.J., but in 1947, Trumpy & Sons moved their shipbuilding operation to Annapolis, Md. When Trumpy Sr. died in 1963, his son John Jr. continued the tradition until 1974, when a triple play of rising costs, labor strikes and the popularity of fiberglass put him out of business.

Perhaps the most famous Trumpy was the USS Sequoia , built in 1925 and now a designated National Historic Landmark. It might also be the most famous boat in the United States. The elegant 104-foot vessel served as the U.S. presidential yacht from the Herbert Hoover administration in the 1930s until Jimmy Carter had it auctioned off in 1977 for $286,000.

The Sequoia was the setting for many notable events: FDR and Eisenhower planned D-Day onboard; Truman made the decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima, Kennedy celebrated his last birthday, and Nixon spent his last night as president aboard (accompanied by a bottle of whiskey) before resigning the next day.

Truman reportedly had a fit of rage onboard when he lost a poker game and damaged the table with a cigar cutter. In a calmer moment he had a piano installed in the main salon that he and Nixon enjoyed playing (although in separate decades). Hoover raised some hackles by featuring the Sequoia on the 1932 White House Christmas card at a time when so many Americans were struggling to buy food during the Great Depression.

The yacht fell into disrepair after it was sold by Carter and became the subject of rancorous legal entanglements . More recently the Sequoia got a $5 million makeover and has returned to Washington, D.C., waters. It is now available for charter or special events.

Trumpys are the ultimate Dream Boats. It’s easy to envisage a leisurely, even presidential afternoon aboard, dining in formal elegance or fishing off the back deck. Many of these boats have been lovingly cared for over the years and still show up on the market. Our gallery (at the top) features four beauties currently for sale, from a 1937 model to the third-to-last Trumpy built in 1972.

ANNABELLE Yacht for Sale

Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.

With her elevated aft pilot house and cockpit; varnished mahogany superstructure; long, lean white hull and beautifully finished walnut interior, the 80’ Trumpy “cruiser” Annabelle (Ex.Osceola/Windsong II) is a quintessential classic gentleman’s motor yacht and arguably one of the famed-company’s prettiest. She was designed by John Trumpy Sr. and launched from the Eastport, MD yard in 1955 as Rumak III for William and Ruth McKelvey of Pittsburgh PA.

Like many Trumpy’s, Annabelle was designed for cruising the waters of the east coast between South Florida and New England and has spent most of her 70-year career doing exactly that. With accommodations for 2-3 crew and 6 guests, plenty of carrying capacity and modern systems and amenities throughout, she’s still very well suited to the sort of extensive cruising for which she was designed.

Annabelle was substantially refit at the Hinckley yard in South West Harbor in the early 2000’s during which she was re-planked below the water line, had a comprehensive systems update, and a new composite teak deck fitted. New Cummins diesels were then installed in 2006. She has been well cared for and updated by the same captain and owner since.

The classic motor yacht experience is all about the wheelhouse and aft entertaining cockpit so that’s a good place to start discussing Annabelle. She has an expansive varnished mahogany helm station with modern electronics cleverly hidden but easily at hand. Overlooking the helm is a wide, elevated teak and blue leather settee, and behind it a well-appointed wet bar (with sink, fridge, ice maker and loads of storage, again nicely hidden behind varnished paneling). Aft of the bar is the entertaining cockpit with a large U-shaped settee and table at the aft end. It’s fully enclosable with isinglass panels and has seating for a dozen with excellent visibility all-around.

It’s a few steps down from the wheelhouse into the satin finished, walnut paneled salon. The main settee, two swivel chairs and convertible dining/coffee table, are forward to port, with an entertainment console and writing desk aft. Access to the galley and crew quarters is forward to stb’d and to the owner’s and guest accommodations aft to port.

Moving aft down the companionway from the salon, there is a twin berth guest cabin to stb’d featuring an ensuite head with a sink and toilet. To port is an over under twin berth guest cabin and aft of it the guest/day head with separate shower for the two guest cabins. The two guest cabins are tastefully appointed with ample storage, matte finished walnut berths and cabinetry, and sisal wrapped bulkheads.

All the way aft is the full width, symmetrical, twin single-berth owner’s cabin. It offers plenty of storage in two large hanging lockers and drawers. The spacious ensuite head (with bathtub, a large vanity and heated towel racks and mirrors) is forward to starboard. This cabin also features its own entrance up a few steps into the private aft cockpit.

Down the forward companionway from the salon is the spacious, classically styled but thoroughly modern galley. It has a residential style stove and hood, ample fridge, freezer, counter and storage space. Forward of the galley is the crew space with a private captain’s cabin aft to port, two additional over under crew berths forward to port, the head and dinette (with washer dryer underneath) to stb’d and the shower all the way forward.

Aft of the galley, through a watertight door is the engine room. It is clean and well-lit with good access on all sides of the twin Cummins QSL9s. The ER also houses the new generator, hydraulics for the stabilizers, aircon units, water maker, and lithium-ion house batteries with an inverter for silence at anchor.

With Trumpy styling, modern systems and tastefully appointed interior by Mimi McMakin of Kemble Interiors, Annabelle is the quintessential classic gentleman’s motor yacht. She’s an ideal dayboat but also a well-equipped, self-sufficient coastal cruiser with accommodations for 6. She has been thoroughly refit, maintained to the highest standards and is ready for her next owner.

Classic Elegance With the History-Rich Trumpy Motor Yacht

  • Writer Craig Ritchie

Because no, they really don’t build them like they used to, it is understandable that the luxury yacht world was abuzz when a classic 1947 Trumpy appeared on the market.

During the Second World War, Norwegian-born naval architect John Trumpy became owner of Mathis Yacht Building Company, which he had joined in 1903, renaming it John Trumpy & Sons and moving it from Camden to Gloucester City, New Jersey. Trumpy yachts established a reputation for elegant designs, top-notch fittings, and superlative finishes. The arrival of a Trumpy in the harbour would cause no less of a stir than a royal princess crashing a picnic; conversation stops, jaws drop to the ground, and everyone gawks in silent awe as the beauty glides into view.

Is it any wonder, then, that the timeless profile of a classic Trumpy—with its magnificent flowing lines, signature white hull, exquisite woodwork, and unequalled elegance—has enchanted yacht buyers for so many years? Trumpy buyers once ranked among the wealthiest people on Earth, including members of the Chrysler, DuPont, and Drexel families. was the proud owner of a Trumpy yacht, while a 104-foot Trumpy served as the U.S. presidential yacht from the 1930s through 1977. That vessel, the USS Sequoia , was reportedly where President Roosevelt and General Eisenhower planned elements of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, , where JFK celebrated his last birthday, and where Richard Nixon told his family he would resign.

And recently, an 80-foot Trumpy launched in 1947—now fresh from a $4 million refit—became available on the brokerage market.

Launched as the motor yacht Seaplay , it is believed to be among the last Trumpy yachts built before the company moved to facilities in Annapolis that same year.

Seaplay was built for George Codrington, who at the time was vice-president at General Motors. The vessel featured in the August 1948 issue of The Rudder magazine, which described Seaplay as having “a well-blended combination of seaworthiness, sleek lines, good turn of speed, ease of handling, sturdiness, compactness with comfort, reliability, and the ability to go anywhere her owner desires.”

Hand-crafted from the ultimate maritime trifecta of Honduran mahogany, American walnut and Burmese teak, the yacht, now named BB, features period furnishings including glass sconces, custom wood venetian blinds, and a dhurrie rug that enhance its character and charm. Decidedly modern amenities like a Garmin digital navigation system with touch-screen displays and an autopilot assure safety underway.

In the interests of guest comfort, BB allows for a few other modern amenities, including an air conditioning system, an updated galley with modern, energy-efficient appliances, and a pop-up 48-inch TV in the full-beam master stateroom—maintaining the character of the classic motor yacht, with a nod to today’s world.

Its large HDTV aside, the sumptuous master suite is otherwise a bit more spartan and less spacious than those on contemporary yachts, but this is a vessel built for enjoying life on deck rather than snoring through it down below. There are further accommodations for six guests in three VIP staterooms, . All accommodations share two full heads, and are accessed by an L-shaped staircase leading below from the salon.

The bow’s lower deck is devoted to crew quarters, a captain’s cabin, and a large galley. , allowing meals to be served in the salon with its large aft dining space for eight or outside in the cockpit under the shade of the overhead sunshade.

The forward end of the main deck features an observation room with large windows overlooking the bow. Side doors allow direct access to the front deck, which includes a wraparound bench seat just below the observation room windows. Wide promenades lead aft along either side of the salon, allowing guests to enjoy a delightful after dinner stroll around the boat, taking with unforgettable views.

Built to explore the world, BB can still do so in fine style with its not quite original but still vintage engines: twin 1961 Detroit diesels replaced the original powertrain long ago. Now fully renovated and rebuilt, the big blocks churn out a combined 468 horsepower, giving BB a top speed of 13 knots. At 10 knots, cruising range is an impressive 700 nautical miles.

Opportunities to acquire a Trumpy yacht in Bristol condition don’t come along too often, and the chance to acquire one from the 1940s straight from a major refit was rare indeed. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to go back in time and hobnob with the Rockefellers, here’s your chance to find out, and get a feel for how life was once enjoyed by society’s elite.

Trumpy: The Pillar of American Yachting

WISHING STAR - 84' Trumpy Classic 1963/1999

In a world saturated with innovative technology and overpriced coffee is rare to find a pillar of American history that truly takes your breath away. Introducing, the Trumpy Motoryacht. Built from the 1920s to the 1970s, Trumpy motor yachts are a timeless example of what American yachting culture is all about.

From the outside, these vessels are an obvious stand-out. The wood scrollwork reveals a meticulously carved “T” on every Trumpy Motor Yacht. A symbolic representation of the high-status passengers that once set sail aboard these yachts, some notable passengers include business mogul Howard Hughes, the Chrysler family, and the Dupont’s, to name a few.

DOVETAIL - 72' Trumpy Houseboat 1972/2019 Salon

A staple design element of the Trumpy Motor Yacht is the polished white hull. Coupled with the classic wood detailing on the side of each Trumpy, these Yachts are easily distinguishable among a crowd. To capture the true essence of the Trumpy Motor Yacht legacy, it is important to understand the history behind the name. The name “Trumpy” originates from Norwegian-born Naval architect John Trumpy Sr., who began building yachts in Camden Yard in Gloucester City, N.J. In 1947, Trumpy & Sons moved their shipbuilding operation to Annapolis, Md. When Trumpy Sr. died in 1963, his son John Jr. continued the tradition until 1974, when rising costs, labor strikes and the popularity of fiberglass put him out of business.

The person responsible for the creation of the Trumpy Motoryacht, John Trumpy, was originally born in Norway. A fourth-generation boat builder, Trumpy immigrated to America in 1908. Working at various boatyards in New York and New Jersey, Trumpy eventually joined Mathis in N.J. as an official partner. Trumpy became their first naval architect. (Mathis had started the company about 10 years earlier.) The most famous Trumpy Yacht was the U.S.S Sequoia. Now a designated historical landmark, the U.S.S Sequoia was built in 1925. This 104’ (31.7m) yacht was most known for being the presidential yacht for Herbert Hoover and his administration. It is rumored that Marilyn Monroe was a guest on the U.S.S Sequoia during former president Kennedy’s term. Everyone from presidents, models, public figures, and entertainers have spent time aboard a Trumpy Yacht. It was not until 1930 that the U.S.S Sequoia was auctioned off in 1977 for $286,000. According to the Trumpy yacht Association, more than 400 yachts were built. Today, however, less than 70 Trumpy Yachts remain.

Cruising through the water on a Trumpy Yacht is a unique experience, to say the least. For those accustomed to yachts with fiberglass or steel hulls, a wooden yacht such as The Trumpy offers a unique experience. Wooden boats allow more give, moving through the water ever so swiftly. While Trumpy Yachts would not win any speed contests, the smooth, leisurely ride is a relaxing experience, to say the least.

DOVETAIL - 72' Trumpy Houseboat 1972/2019 Ariel Overhead

Trumpy Yachts were made for the rich and famous. Their glamourous appeal boasts not only size but functionality. Most Trumpy Yachts feature three staterooms, sleeping up to six guests. Most Trumpy yachts also feature a full galley, crew quarters, and a generous main salon. All Trumpy Yachts feature a similar design. Trumpy Yachts feature a white hull made of wood. The classic white wood contrasts the darker wooden details found on each Trumpy.

Worth Avenue Yachts is proud to have several different Trumpy Motor Yachts listed. Experience Retro-Luxury on a Trumpy Motor Yacht

Mocka Jumbies and Rum...

28 trumpy yachts

Modern boats boast fiberglass hulls, prefabricated components and fast engines. But some boaters would rather turn back the clock a few decades to the classic wooden boats built for relaxed, refined yachting.

From 1909-1974, renowned naval architect John Trumpy designed innovative wooden boats starting with ferries, naval patrol boats and trawlers. Later, he designed runabouts and tenders, working up to his distinctive sailing and motor yachts. His yachts stimulate the senses with crisp lines, distinctive hull and bow shapes, “tumblehome” aft sections, wide varnished accent stripes on a white hull, quiet Detroit Diesel engines and a smooth ride. Owners included the titans of industry and eight U.S. presidents.

As per John Trumpy’s grandson, Johan Trumpy, John grew up in the family shipyard in Norway, obtained a degree in naval architecture in Germany, worked in Norway until the yard was sold, emigrated to America and worked as an architect for New York Ship in Camden NJ before co-founding Mathis Yacht Building Co.,which became John Trumpy & Sons, Inc.

According to the Trumpy Yacht Association (www.trumpyyachts.org), more 400 yachts were built. Today, less than 70 Trumpys remain, including one motorsailer and only two sailboats. Not all of the 70 survivors are pristine, since they require daily upkeep. Most Trumpy motor yacht owners try to use original replacement parts and adhere to period appropriate interiors. The maintenance of a wooden boat includes multiple layers of paint and varnish, and repairing or replacing any wood damaged by worms, rough bottoms, water and salt.

Owning one requires love, devotion and a thick wallet. Not everyone can afford this kind of yacht, but the opportunity to temporarily experience the Trumpy lifestyle is attainable. Many owners make their yachts available for a few hours, a day, evening, weekend or weekly charter. Destinations and itineraries are personal, with a custom price.

Charter base fees include the yacht, crew numbers and insurance. Additional fees include meals, fuel, dock fees, the function requirements (like a band or cocktail party) while docked or en route, dietary restrictions and special requests. Advanced reservations are needed to plan corporate events, parties, dinners, weddings, short charters and longer cruises during different seasons and locations.

1966 Windrush

These yachts are expertly crewed, some by their owners, like Capt. Bill Iler and First Mate/Chef Connie Iler aboard Windrush, a 55-foot, 1966 Trumpy cruiser the Annapolis-based couple purchased in 2005.

“She reflects the less-formal style of that decade compared to the first half of the 20th century,” says Capt. Iler. “We try to be true to the best parts of the 60s and Trumpy style while ignoring others, like some of the greens and other less-spectacular aspects of style from that era. Good style doesn’t go out of style, so we’ve kept the beautiful varnished woodwork and most of the original Trumpy fixtures and furnishings – or near look-alikes.”

The classic furnishings are complemented by modern accessories. The Windrush experience is like being welcomed to the Ilers’ historic home, with all the comforts and individual attention a guest expects. Connie Iler oversees the five-star service onboard, accommodating six guests for day cruises, or four overnight guests.

“It is a three bedroom/three bath home on the water,” says Capt. Iler. “Unlike a cruise ship, you determine your own itinerary, and we serve meals and refreshments tailored to your specific preferences. Chartering one of these vessels is probably one of the best ways to experience what it is like to own one.”

Their most popular cruise packages are a 3 day/2 night excursion costing from $2,500- $3,500, for 2-4 people, or the “Vacation Week” for 8 days/7 nights ranging from $7,000-$11,000, for 2-4 people. Cruises run in the Florida Keys, through the Intracoastal Waterway, to the Chesapeake Bay, depending on the season. Visit www.americanclassicyachting.com for details.

1939 Washingtonian

If you would prefer to experience the glamorous, “old money,” Trumpy lifestyle, then a cruise on the Washingtonian is an option. Built in 1939 for financier AG Drexel Paul, she is one of 20 pre-WWII Trumpys still in service.

Capt. James Twaddle, with over 30 years of experience in managing and operating these yachts, has the helm. Mr. Berger also has his Captain’s license and 100 ton Master and helps out when he’s not working as an architect.

Onboard, expect 20th century elegance with 21st century amenities. Sticking true to the original design of the yacht, the exposed curved beams in the saloon and pilothouse and trims are highlighted.  Much of the crew quarters, all the lighting and the engines are original. The formal saloon has two navy linen sofas, a 1939-drop leaf Trumpy Captain’s desk and an original Trumpy coffee table that converts to a dining table for six people.

Appropriately, there is a portrait of George Washington below deck. “This was on the boat and we thought it was fun, so we left it,” says Tracy Berger.

The Bergers are the eighth owners of the Washingtonian. The vessel has passed USCG inspections to accommodate up to 29 passengers and two crew for dinners, parties, weddings, business meetings, or a sunset cruise. On weekend cruises, she can accommodate six overnight passengers.

The Washingtonian caters events through partner hotels in destinations along the East Coast. An average sunset cruise for 25 people runs about $4,000, including crew, catering, food/beverage servers and of course, the sunset, says Paul Berger.

May-October, the Washingtonian will be in St. Michaels, Maryland. October-November, she’s in Charleston, S.C., area, and mid-November-April, she docks at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. Visit www.thewashingtonianyacht.com for more information.

A Trumpy Captain’s Life

Strolling along the marinas in places like Annapolis, Md., Beaufort, N.C. or Palm Beach, Fla., one expects to see impressive sailboats, yachts and mega yachts. But if you’re fortunate to see a Trumpy yacht docked in the marina, you will probably whistle, look a little starry-eyed and say, “Wow!”

“When we’re in port, with all the new, huge yachts nearby, people want to look at the Trumpys, not the other ones,” says Capt. Ted Schmidt of the Trumpy motor yacht America.

Capt. Schmidt, 70, has been on boats for five decades and became a captain 20 years ago. In college he studied philosophy and math, which has given him the right perspectives on life. He has a romantic vibe with eyes that twinkle while he speaks of being at sea.

“I have a familiarity and love of boats, wooden boats and sailing boats,” says Schmidt. “I know how a wooden boat should be treated; I watch the repairs and know when things are done right.”

The Michigan native and avid scuba diver now resides in Florida, close to the marina where he can attend to the America each day. “I’m away from home and it’s hard on relationships,” he says. While on a charter, 18-hour days are the norm.

On the positive side, he adds there is “no institutional stress, and usually I know more than the boss, who knows little about the workings of the boat. They know how much is spent.”

Generally America is in Florida December to May and then up to Long Island for the summer. “The boat is part of my life and my home; it’s a nice environment in nice marinas with other nice boats to be around,” he says.

The two newcomers, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival this week, both feature advanced electric propulsion systems by Norwegian e-motor manufacturer EVOY. The duo is also equipped with the robust deep-V hulls synonymous with Axopar.

The 22-foot AX/E 22 is powered by a 63 kW battery and an Evoy Outboard Breeze motor that can produce over 120 hp for a top speed of 36 knots and a range of more than 50 nautical miles at slow speeds. The larger, 25-foot AX/E 25 packs a 126 kWh battery and a more powerful Evoy Outboard Storm motor capable of churning out over 300 horses for a max speed of over 50 knots and a range of up to 60 nautical miles at slow speeds. Axopar adds that each boat also offers “unparalleled torque, whisper-quiet operation, and zero emissions.” Fast charging tech ensures minimal downtime between adventures, too.

The AX/E fleet isn’t bad to look at, either. The first two models showcase premium eco-friendly materials, powder-painted profiles, stylish upholstery, and neutral palettes, resulting in a refined, timeless aesthetic that is sure to appeal to discerning yachters. Each boat also has modular features that enable personalized configurations. Both can accommodate six passengers, but the 25 also has a front cabin that can sleep two guests. Want to check them out in person? The AX/E 22 and AX/E 25 will be displayed at Cannes from September 10 to 15. The 25 has a recommended retail price of €234,000 (about $259,000), while the 22 has a recommended retail price of €133,500 (roughly $147,000).

Bodies recovered in boat capsize near Akiak

a river

The bodies of both men missing after a boat capsized on the Kuskokwim River near Akiak in late July have been recovered and identified, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Another passenger who was on the boat survived the July 27 incident, and was found clinging to the riverbank in a shortcut slough just below Akiak the same evening.

Troopers say the first body found, that of 28-year-old Tuluksak resident David Alexie Jr., was recovered on Aug. 8 by a passing boater just below Akiak.

Troopers received a report from Bethel Search and Rescue of a body found in the river somewhere below Akiachak on Aug. 28. The body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office and later positively identified as 31-year-old Robert Lott of Akiak.

Search and rescue crews from Akiak, Akiachak, Bethel, Kwethluk, and Tuluksak spent weeks combing the area following the capsize.

Troopers said that next of kin for Alexie and Lott have been notified.

Stenson dog walking field approved close to canal boat homes

The new dog walking field would be set up on vacant land close to Stenson Lock

Councillors have approved plans for a dog walking field yards from a residential canal boat community. At a South Derbyshire District Council meeting this week (September 10) plans from Sarah Stephens for a dog walking field on vacant land between Stenson Lock , the Trent and Mersey Canal and a railway line, were approved for two years.

More than 30 objection letters have been filed by residents opposing the scheme, largely from people living in canal boats at Stenson Lock, 50 yards from the proposed site. Councillors shared concerns raised by residents about the impact of noise from barking dogs and lighting from the facility and road safety issues relating to a bridge close to the site access.

The private dog walking facility would be available by reservation only, with one owner allowed to use the plot at a time – though with no detailed limit on the number of dogs per session. David Wheeler, speaking on behalf of the canal boat residents in Stenson Lock, said the main issues were road safety and noise nuisance.

He said: “The applicant is perfectly entitled to use this land for commercial reasons. We do not feel the access and egress has been improved enough. Stenson is a very busy arterial road into and out of Derby. There is a blind summit on the road bridge and cars travelling down there would be immediately on top of the access for this site.

“We feel that we have been overlooked. There is a residential community of 80 boats and 50 people who live there, 50 yards from the field. If kennels or other canine facilities opened ordinarily it would be in a rural setting. It is felt that if there was a residential housing estate there it would be determined that it was not appropriate.”

Ms Stephens, the applicant, said: “This was initially supposed to be a small thing but it has been made out to be this huge thing. We just want to make use of the land. Since the article was shared in the media and on social media we have got a lot of support.

“We had a car park here before and that did not have any issues and that had more cars than this would. It would have two cars at most. We are not setting up kennels. It is a small dog walking field with one owner at a time and there would be minimal noise.

“There is already a pub, a gun club down the road and there are kennels locally that you can hear from the site. I struggle to see how this would be worse than what is already there and it would not be at an unsociable hour because it would close at 8pm.”

Cllr Amy Wheelton said: “When I visited the site I was shocked at how blind the site access was. 8am until 8pm opening hours may be a lot for residential amenity, it is a lot. I quite like the idea of a two-year permission because the highway situation is dangerous.

“These facilities around the area do look like astroturfs and are lit up like they are being used for hockey.”

Cllr Kerry Haines said she sympathised with residents over the road safety concerns and that she was “surprised” that Derbyshire County Council ’s highways department had not “picked up on that”, with no opposition lodged.

Cllr Robert Pearson said: “I see the concerns but there is a busy train line nearby and there are many dogs being walked on the towpath. The site does not have a limit on dogs and says commercial dog walkers could use it so we could have a whole pack of dogs there. There has to be some balance.”

Steffan Saunders, the council’s head of planning, said the council could place extra restrictions on the need for extra planting along the boundary for the purpose of blocking light from headlights. He said a two-year temporary approval could be attached in order for the site’s use to be tested and reassessed for potential permanent approval.
